sumons is a wine and sweets specialty shop in Takasago. The owner, Yuki Katsuki, is also a pastry chef and a sommelier. She opened Tsumons this March after working at a soufflé and cheesecake shop for 15 years. Located on a very common backstreet, the one-story building with an exquisite facade is easily recognizable. Stop by to get some wine and sweets to go, or stay and relax in one of the softly-lit counter seats. For a mid-afternoon glass of bubbly, a light meal or a little dessert and wine after you eat, Tsumons, which opens at 3pm, offers something for any occasion. You can choose your own drinks and sweets, but we recommend you start with Tsumons' trademark soufflé and a carefully matched wine. I
n a well documented move, Australian rugby superstar Nick Cummins finds himself in Fukuoka on a contract playing for the top-league team Coca Cola Red Sparks. Formerly with the Western Force and tagged to represent the Wallabies in the Rugby World Cup 2015, Nick opted to play in Japan for a new experience and personal reasons. But the “Honey Badger” as he’s known back home, comes to Fukuoka with a great attitude and a good dose of his trademark cheeky Aussie charm. A busy training and game schedule with the Red Sparks is punctuated by fishing and cycling around town to look for good places to “strap the feed bag on.” Although less physical than in the Southern Hemisphere, Nick finds Japanese rugby to be faster - in fact he’s already lost a few kilos keeping up with his new teammates. “But the blokes don’t lack any heart. They’re very courageous." Ready to give it his all, Nick brings a few of his personal mottos to Fukuoka including “When in doubt, flat out”, and “Up the guts and into ‘em”. A WALK INTO JAPAN’S PAST BY BECK WHEELER
Y
akushima is a small island to the south of Kagoshima, nicknamed the Alps of the Ocean. Yakushima has 45 mountain peaks, ancient cedar forests, numerous waterfalls, ocean-side onsens and a thriving community of craftspeople who carve homewares out of cedar and create shiny pottery pieces glazed with coral and shell. There are two main groups of tourists who make the journey to Yakushima. The first group are the Japanese hikers who come from around Japan to experience the ancient cedar forests. The main attraction for this group is a 7,000 year old tree named Jomon-sugi (a giant cedar tree that is said to have started its life in the Jomon Era). The second group is a more international mix of animation enthusiasts who come to Yakushima in search
of the landscapes which influenced Hayao Miyazaki's (Studio Ghibli) film Princess Mononoke. The main attraction for this group is a hiking trail called Shiratani Unsuikyo, which takes you through moss covered rainforests filled with monkeys and deer. The mountains of Yakushima are both welcoming and foreboding. There are many tales about the gods that live in the Okudake Mountains (Yakushima’s central mountain region) and the islanders have climbed these mountains since ancient times to take part in a traditional ritual known as 'Takemairi'. The largest mountain in Yakushima is Mt Miyanoura-dake – Kyushu’s highest mountain, sitting 1,935m above sea level. Yakushima's ancient cedar forests were listed as a World Heritage Site in 1993.

Danish floral artist Nicolai Bergmann developed his unique style of floral design since arriving in Japan in 1998. He mixes Northern European and Japanese elements to create works of contemporary design. This exhibition features fifty works inspired by Dazaifu Tenmangu’s 1,100 year history.
Chefs from across Asia serve up local dishes at food stalls at this three-day outdoor festival. Nearby, souvenirs from participating regions are on sale. Don’t miss the traditional musical performances on stage including groups from Mongolia, Korea, Nepal, and China.

◊ Hakata Port Tower Turns 50 Hakata Port Tower, the 100m red tower located on Hakata Wharf, turns 50 in October. One of the six towers designed by architect Tachu Naito—others include Tokyo Tower and the second Tsutenkaku in Osaka—it opened in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics. The observation deck located at 70m affords beautiful panoramic views of Hakata Bay and the city. It is open 10:00~22:00 (last entrance 21:40), and admission is free.
◊ Innovation Studio Fukuoka Innovation Studio Fukuoka, one of the City's Special Zone initiatives, is set to begin. The project aims to support new ideas
City Hall has undertaken many efforts to encourage people to use public transportation. It has promoted the adoption of low-floor buses and has teamed up with Aeon Malls in Ito, Kashiihama, Karatsu, Chikushino and Fukutsu as well as Konoha Mall Hashimoto to offer park-and-ride service. ◊ Private Companies Help Maintain Street Lamps Fukuoka City has joined forces with local companies to maintain street lamps, the first such initiative in Kyushu. The City is responsible for around 36,000 street lamps, which cost ¥600 million a year to operate and maintain. Under this new scheme, partner companies pay ¥20,000 a year per lamp in exchange for permission to post their names and contact information on the poles. They are responsible for visual inspections and must contact

Subway Festa 2014 To celebrate Railroad Day (Oct. 14) and the 10th anniversary of the Nanakuma Line, Subway Festa 2014 will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5, 10:00~16:30 (last admission: 16:00), at the Hashimoto Rail Yard. Visitors can tour the rail yard, watch a 3000 series subway car lifting demonstration and shop at the lost-and-found bazaar.
