The cozy restaurant, with nine counter and 26 table seats, puts you in close contact with Chef Hoashi. You can ask him to select hors
d'oeuvres to accompany your first drink as well as drinks to go with whichever main dish you crave. Custom orders welcomed. Aside from steaks, which are slow-cooked over charcoal, there are plenty of other options for the consummate foodie, including dishes flavored with wine and champagne-based sauces and hearty veggie-filled fare. F
rom a simple cooking blog to semi-regular TV appearances, Bobby Judo has risen to become a local star. Initially attracted to Japan through his interest in Zen Buddhism, Bobby began life in Japan on the JET Program, and was based in Saga for six years. After several years teaching, he created his own cooking blog, a YouTube channel and began to push for TV roles on local networks. The rest, as they say, is history. Bobby is now a well established TV personality appearing regularly on a cooking show in Saga since 2010. His success on YouTube with over a million views is no surprise either – charmingly presented with effortless Japanese, he explores intercultural topics, such as the use of hand-gestures and why foreigners shouldn’t be praised too much for their Japanese. While Bobby acknowledges that his foreignness got his foot in the door, he hopes that soon foreigners can just be themselves on TV and not forced to be stereotyped caricatures. Check out their famous mentaiko (spicy cod roe) section, and the surprising tasty ¥100 Freshly deep-fried Mentaiko bakery. ◊ Firefighters’ New Year’s Parade The popular annual Firefighters’ New Year’s Parade will be held at Marine Messe Fukuoka (7-1 Okihamamachi, Hakata-ku) on Jan. 10 (Sat) from 10:00 to 16:00. After the brigades march in, the firefighters will perform traditional ladders stunts and dances. Fukuoka City Zoo New Year's Lucky Draw The City Zoo will hold its annual New Year's Lucky Draw on Jan 2 (Fri). First prize winners will earn the right to shake hands with an Asian small-clawed otter. Other prizes include the right to name certain zoo animals and the ever-popular deer antlers and peacock feathers. Lucky draw tickets will be distributed at the main gate. (Limit one per person. Tickets may run out before the Zoo opens at 9:00.) The lucky draw is free to enter, but the regular admission fee is required.
◊ Get a New Year's gift and try some seven-herb porridge The City Botanical Garden will give away flower pots to the first 200 visitors who pass through the main gate on Jan. 2 (Fri). Doors open at 9:00. There will also be a display of the seven herbs used in nanakusa-gayu (seven-herb porridge) from Jan. 2 (Fri) ~ Jan. 12 (Coming of Age Day). Meanwhile, the first 200 visitors to sign up at 11:00 on Jan. 6 (Tue) can
