veryone’s eaten ramen, the ubiquitous thin noodle that has sustained the global student population for the last 20 years. But what about udon, ramen’s fatter cousin? In Japan, udon is at least as popular as ramen and perhaps even more diverse in taste, but it is yet to make the leap to the international stage that ramen has. This has not, however, stopped the international coming to udon. This month’s edition of In Fukuoka catches up with Rob Kolinofsky, originally from New Jersey, USA but now based in Fukuoka’s “Kanbei Udon” making udon noodles. Widely considered the most important step of any good udon dish, Rob has spent seven and a half years perfecting his art, and is a rarity in Japan as one of the few foreigners who have mastered a skill considered to be difficult even for the Japanese. As well as making noodles, Rob also helped to create Kanbe Udon’s now infamous black udon in celebration of Barack Obama’s 2008 election and the Kuroda Bikiri - black surprise - udon in reference to Kuroda Kanbei, the “founding father” of Fukuoka.

014 was a tight season for the Hawks as they narrowly managed to secure the top standing in the Pacific League after a year long fight with the Orix Buffaloes. After dispatching the Nippon Ham Fighters in the Climax Series, the Hawks needed just five games against the Hanshin Tigers to win the Japan Series. It was an amazing finish to an exciting season, but 2015 could be even better for baseball fans in Fukuoka. As a team, the Hawks have made some smart moves in recent years. Batting power has been down around the league so the Hawks didn’t try to chase power. They ranked second to last in home runs last season in the PCL, but they led the league by a large margin in batting average. In fact they led the PCL in many offensive categories like hits, RBIs, and most importantly runs scored. They were an offensive machine with six of their starters batting

over .300. Yuki Yanagita, 25 years-young, led the team last year with a .317 batting average along with fifteen home runs and 33 stolen bases. He’s coming into the prime of his career for power and his left handed swing has a lot of natural loft, so look for his power numbers to rise for the next few years with true 30HR/30SB potential and MVP caliber upside. The Hawks seem to have stellar pitching every season. The Hawks’ 3.25 team ERA was only behind the Orix Buffaloes for best in the Pacific League (PCL). In fact the Hawks were near the top of the league in several important pitching categories, strikeouts, hits allowed, runs allowed. All of this despite only three of their starters managing over 14 starts. Jason Standridge shouldered a heavy part of that workload last year leading the team in innings pitched and strikeouts, both career highs for him. The bullpen was once again

immaculate, both deep and talented. Dennis Sarfate anchored the 9th inning with a matching ERA and WHIP of 1.05 and lethal strikeout rate of nearly 13K/9IP. The Hawks will play this year under the command of rookie manager Kimiyasu Kudo. A living legend in his own right, Kudo may be a first year manager, but he spent 29 years pitching for the Lions, Hawks, and Giants before retiring at age 48 in 2011. With the walls moved in power should rise in Yahuoku! Dome in 2015, but the game plan should remain the same. Put the bat on the ball, score lots of runs and use the slew of bullpen arms to preserve leads. The veteran players have skills that should age well, the core players have settled into their roles, and Yanagita and Nakamura, the youngsters, are primed for breakouts. The cards are in place for the Hawks to be a much improved team which is exciting considering last season they won it all.

he 2011 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the eastern shoreline of northern Honshu is no longer fresh in our minds. But relief work there still continues. Dennis Sarfate and Jason Standridge are donating a portion of their salaries this season to the Great East Japan Earthquake Recovery Initiatives Foundation. At the end of the season starting pitcher Standridge will donate ¥200,000 for each of his wins and closer Sarfate will contribute ¥100,000 for each save. Last season Jason won 11 games and Dennis collected 37 saves!

DENNIS SARFATE（サファテ投手） Sarfate pitched for the Brewers, Astros, and Orioles as both a starter and a relief pitcher. In 2011 he signed with the Hiroshima Carp. Sarfate has pitched for the Carp, Lions, and since 2014 the Hawks. Since coming to Japan, Sarfate has averaged nearly 60IP per year and over the last three years has seen his strikeouts, strikeout rate, and playing time increase. At the same time his ERA and K:W ratio has been decreasing. With his two-seam fastball and slider combination Sarfate is a true shutdown closer.

JASON STANDRIDGE (スタンリッジ投手） The Tampa Bay Devil Rays drafted Standridge with their first round pick in 1997. He had a projectable frame out of high school at 191cm and 110kg and the Rays fast tracked him through their minor league system. In mid 2007 the Hawks signed him and he appeared in 20 games before injury cut short his 2008 season. He pitched with the Hanshin Tigers from 2010-2013, but returned to the Hawks in 2014. This year the Hawks will once again look to Standridge to pitch deep into games and help keep the bullpen arms fresh for the fall.

◊ 9th Fukuoka Theater Festival ◊ Taking Fukuoka to the Next Level The City's budget for the 2015 fiscal year was approved. At ¥782 billion (+¥5.6 billion y-o-y), the general account budget is the highest on record. Fukuoka aims to be "a leading city in Asia, balancing people, urban functions and the environment" and has defined the creation of a positive feedback loop between urban growth and improved living standards as its basic strategy for city management. Taking advantage of relaxed regulations within the National Strategic Special Zone, the City aims to use the urban growth generated to raise the standard of living. The 9th Fukuoka Theater Festival will be held at Nishitetsu Hall, IMS Hall and Pom Plaza Hall from May 6~31. The event was launched in 2006 as a way to build connections between performers and the local community. Theater companies from Fukuoka and around Japan will be performing at the festival. ◊ Fukuoka House Completed ◊ Fukuoka Marathon 2015 Fukuoka Marathon 2015 returns this year on Nov. 8 (Sun). The number of slots for residents of Fukuoka and Itoshima cities will be doubled from 1,000 to 2,000 to make the event more appealing to locals. Also, the first 100 people who donate ¥100,000 or more to the newly established Fukuoka

The construction of Fukuoka House, a lodging facility for the family members of patients at the Fukuoka Children’s Hospital (5 Kashii-teriha, Higashi-ku), is now complete. Located on the hospital grounds, the facility was funded in part by donations. It will open on May 1 (Rate: ¥1,000 per person per night) and will be managed by Ronald McDonald House Charities Japan.
