feel more Japanese than American now!” Michele laughs. Michele has lived in Japan nearly 20 years, and now runs Bliss Clinic with her husband and college sweetheart, Dr. Toyokazu Tajiri (a plastic surgeon with over 10 years of experience). Michele spent her teenage years on the US military base on Okinawa, and after a brief flirtation with college in the US, found she couldn’t stay away. She soon returned to learn Japanese, and in two years achieved the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. This allowed her to pursue her dream of studying nursing. This is obviously hard enough in one’s native tongue, but Michele achieved one of Japan’s most respected nursing accreditations, the Public Health Nursing License – one of the very few foreigners to do so. FUKUOKA ROCKS! A GUIDE TO INDOOR CLIMBING By Oscar Boyd
M
ay has come and gone, and the beautiful weather that allowed you to fully enjoy Japan’s outdoors is soon to be replaced by sticky humidity and the dreaded rainy season. You still want to stay fit and healthy, but going outside has lost some of its appeal, so what do you do? This month’s feature article focuses on the sport of indoor rock climbing, which has taken Japan by storm, with new climbing walls and shops popping up all over the place. Fukuoka Prefecture currently has more than 15 walls, with half of these within the limits of city and some as central as Daimyo. We've listed all of these walls on our website, with details on facilities, lessons, equipment rental and much more.
Bouldering vs Lead Climbing The vast majority of indoor climbing walls in Fukuoka focus around bouldering. Bouldering does not require any knowledge of ropes and allows you to focus on free climbing. Because of a lack of ropes, bouldering walls tend to be lower, usually topping at around 4-5m with hefty mats below them to break your fall. Even with the mats, you should always attempt to climb down from the top of these walls rather than jumping, for both endurance training and safety. However, if you have your sights set higher, two walls in Fukuoka feature lead climbing walls (10m) alongside their bouldering walls. Lead climbing involves ropes and harnesses (you can borrow/rent these at the walls) and requires at least two people: the climber and the anchor. The anchor’s job is to feed rope

as needed to the climber who will secure themselves by clipping it through carabiners. In the case of a fall, the anchor prevents the rope from running through the carabiner and counterbalances the weight of the climber. This is much more technical than bouldering and you should have lessons before attempting lead climbing without an instructor.
Equipment: As with any high adrenaline sport, rock climbing comes with its own set of highly specialised equipment that can soon add up to become eye wateringly expensive. Luckily, because with indoor climbing, equipment requirements are relatively low. For a start, most things can be rented at shops (check
our list online for availability) which means you can try out the sport before making any significant investment. However, if you do want to start your own collection of gear, we recommend you start with the following:
Chalk most often comes in powder form, but this can be a problem indoors when there is limited ventilation. Chalk balls are one solution, as the chalk is not in loose powder form. Check with your regular climbing place before you buy.

3. Harness
Whilst a pair of indoor trainers might suffice for your first few visits, climbing shoes exist for a reason. Climbing shoes are shaped to give the maximum possible grip on any surface, and are pointed and edged to allow you to find even the smallest footholds. Most shops will rent shoes, but buying your own pair is the best way to ensure maximum comfort (or minimum discomfort - climbing shoes are notoriously uncomfortable). Note, climbers tend not to wear socks under their shoes.
Only necessary if you’re thinking of learning lead climbing or planning on moving to the great outdoors, a harness is one of the most personal pieces of kit as it may one day save your life. Harnesses come in all sorts of varieties depending on what type of climbing/mountaineering your are planning on doing. Research carefully and talk to more experienced people before buying your first harness.

In June, Fukutsu City hosts a firefly festival in Motogigawa Nature Park. Enjoy live music and food in the afternoon before the main event. As night falls, fireflies appear in the river’s headwaters. Parking is limited but a free bus runs from Fukuma Station to the park.
This 420-year-old event is a tug-of-war between teams of Yobuko citizens using a 400m long rope and is started by a gong and flaming arrows. A land team win means a good harvest, while a win for the beach team means a good catch. Everyone is welcome to participate in this event!

大自然の中でウォーキングや森林 浴を楽しむことができる福津市の 「ほたるの里」では、5月下旬か ら6月上旬にホタルが見られ、園 内を流れる本木川上流では、雨上 がりの夜など、多い時には200匹 あまりが飛び交う。ほたるまつり では、屋台やコンサートが開かれ 毎年多くの人でにぎわい、福間駅 から会場までの無料シャトルバス が30分おきに運行される。
約420年前に豊富秀吉が名護屋城に 陣を構えた時、将兵の士気を高める ため加藤清正と福島正則の両陣営を 東西に分けて綱引きをさせたのが始 まりと言われ、毎年6月の第一土日 に行われている。直径15cm、長さ 400mもある大綱を使って、岡組と 浜組に分かれて3回勝負を行い、浜 組が勝てば豊漁、岡組が勝ては豊作 になると言われている。飛び入り参 加も可能だ。

◊ New Hydrogen Station Opens City Hall's Hydrogen Leader City Project aims to make hydrogen a viable source of energy. In April, the world’s first hydrogen station where hydrogen is sourced from biogas emitted from fermented sludge opened inside the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant. ◊ Seaside Bike Project The City is currently pilot testing a community cycling program called Seaside Bike. Users can pick up and drop off rental bicycles from six bike stations in the city, including Cross Country Bicycle Shops (Hawks Town, Keyaki-dori and Nakasu) and the Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk Hotel. No registration required. Payment is by credit card only (¥200 for the first hour; ¥100 for each additional hour; ¥1,000 daily max).
No applications necessary. Anyone is welcome to join, so dress comfortably, bring some work gloves and meet at one of 190 meeting spots around the city. Signup starts at 9:00 (10:45 at the Jigyohama Beach main venue). The event will proceed as planned in the case of a light drizzle but will be cancelled if there are heavier rains. ◊ Fukuoka City Museum Turns 25 The Fukuoka City Museum, which opened on October 18, 1990, will turn 25 later this year. The museum houses displays on local history, the city’s ties with Asia, and more. From Jun. 6 to Jul. 26, the museum will exhibit 120 coal mine paintings from the Sakubei Yamamoto collection, Japan's first entry in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. In July and August, the museum will be open until 19:00 every day except Sundays and holidays.

Fukuoka Airport is the busiest single-runway airport in Japan. To alleviate congestion and
