RENOVATION MUSEUM REIZENSOU Built in 1958, Reizensou is a former apartment building located next to the Kawabata Shopping Arcade. In 2002, it was converted into a facility where young creatives can learn about and practice the art of renovation, and through the years, its rooms have housed galleries, eateries, bars, cafes and various other spaces where people can congregate and communicate. The rooms are renovated by their respective tenants, giving the entire building the feel of a do-it-yourself renovation gallery. Reizensou holds an open house twice a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) and various other events, such as workshops, film viewings and photo exhibits, on a rolling basis.

MINEMATSU HONKE Of course, we all know Fukuoka is a ramen paradise, but have you ever heard of donmen? Donmen is the brainchild of Mineya, a kamaboko (fish sausage) merchant in business since 1910. Inspired by champon, it is udon served in a Japanese broth made from bonito and sardines and topped with pork, handmade kamaboko, and a hearty helping of vegetables. The udon noodles are super firm and thick—they won’t go soft!—and the whole shebang is served in a whopping 32-cm diameter bowl. The kamaboko and other ingredients add a rich flavor to the subtle Japanese broth, making donmen a healthy and nutritious treat that is sure to fill you up. Can’t handle a whole bowl? Try the mini donmen, with 30% fewer veggies and half the noodles. Located in the basement of the Fukuoka Building in downtown Tenjin, Minematsu Honke gets crowded during the weekday lunch rush, but there are also spacious private rooms if you’re dining in a group.

meyama Teppei Shokudo opened near Tenjin with the aim of providing delicious, locally sourced meals. The menu changes daily since 20 different kinds of fresh fish are procured every morning. Mainstays include mirin-boshi (dried fish seasoned with sweet cooking sake), goma saba (mackerel sashimi with sesame dressing; a Hakata favorite), and fresh fish served as sashimi, boiled, grilled, fried or with a tangy ankake (starchbased sauce). If you’re having trouble deciding, you can’t go wrong with the fish of the day (boiled or salt-grilled). The menu sometimes features rare fish, so make sure to ask the staff for a recommendation. Sets come with Kyushu-grown rice and miso soup (refills are free!), plus a small side dish. Be sure to try the original furikake rice seasoning made from pickled plums, pickled mustard leaf and kelp. Need a break from meat? Try the veggie-loaded salad set. Hungover? The clam soup set will set you straight. Here, there is a meal for every occasion.

언 제 든지 안 심 하 고 식 사 할 수 있 는 곳 을 만 들고 싶었다 는 오너의 이름 을 따 서일본 최대의 상 업지역 텐진에서 그리 멀지 않은 와타나베도오리 골목에 세운 우메야마 텟페이 식당. 하카타의 풍부한 해산물을 중심으로 한 정식을 먹기 위해 남녀노소가 끊임없이 찾아온다. 매일 20종 정도의 신선한 생선을 들여오며 메뉴는 생선에 따라 그날그날 다르다. 고등어 소금구이, 은대구나 고등어 등 먹기 좋은 두툼한 살을 미림에 절여 말린 '미린보시' 외에도 고마사바(고등어 회를 간장 양념과 깨로 버무린 하카타 향토요리)와 신선한 계절 생선회, 조림, 소금구이, 튀김 등 생선의 종류와 상태에 맞는 조리방법으로 요리한 40~50종의 메뉴가 즐비. 메뉴 고르기가 힘들 다 면 오늘의 생선(조림∙소 금 구 이) 을 추천한다. 평소 식탁에서 만나기 힘든 고급 생선이나 희귀한 생선을 사용한 메뉴가 있기도 하니 추천 메뉴를 직원에게 물어보는 것도 좋다. 정식에는 큐슈산 쌀로 지은 무료 추가제공 가능한 밥과 된장국, 반찬이 포함된다. 밥에는 우메야마 텟페이 특제 후리카케를 뿌려도 좋다. 최근 육류를 많이 먹었다 싶을 때는 샐러드 정식, 과음한 다음 날 점심에는 조갯국 정식 등은 어떨까. A Message from Mayor Takashima
In the Startup Cafe, opened last October, people are making new connections, and several new businesses have been started. The private sector has stepped up efforts as well, with the establishment of new shared office spaces and venture capital funds, and for the second year in row, Fukuoka’s business startup rate ranked first among Japan’s designated cities. I believe these activities can rejuvenate the local economy, and I aim to turn Fukuoka into a global city by making use of relaxed regulations while encouraging interaction among new and existing companies.

Startup Visa for Foreigner Entrepreneurs
The Startup Visa that Fukuoka City proposed to the national government has been approved. The Eastern Fukuoka Animal Welfare & Management Center (5-10-1 Kamata, Higashi-ku; 092-691-0131; Weekdays: 8:30~17:00) has dogs and cats available for adoption. Interested persons can apply on weekdays or on Sunday, December 13. (Reservations are required.) To make sure the dogs and cats in the shelter can find a happy home, we check to see how prospective owners get along with the animals and have them attend a lecture at the time of adoption.
