Gofukumachi still retains much of its old charm, including the renovated 120-year-old house that Barba Bianca calls home. Longtime chef and sommelier Kazuya Okubo uses seafood sourced fresh from the market every morning, pesticide-free vegetables and locally grown meat to create his courses of pastas and other dishes. He is now using saw-edged perch, a seasonal delicacy, which he seasons with fresh herbs and tops with tomato sauce. A reasonable lunch course featuring two appetizers, a pasta, an entree, and dessert is available by reservation at least one day in advance.

HANAGEN HONZENAN On the 10th floor of Kitte Hakata is a laid-back soba restaurant called Hanagen Honzenan. The noodles are carefully crafted every morning from soba flour milled in-house and delivered fresh daily. The aroma is just right and the noodles go down smoothly. But the flavorful broth is the shop’s trademark. Made daily from natural ingredients, including dried mackerel and bonito, it’s also used in the tamagoyaki (rolled eggs) and rice bowls as well as the soba dishes. Even the popular pork cutlet features an egg topping flavored with soba broth. This cutlet teams up with the soba for the ever-popular roast cutlet with mushroom and egg set—a delicious flavor and filling meal featuring crispy fried Miyazaki pork. This festival is dedicated to the Yanagawa-born tanka poet and children’s songwriter, Hakushu Kitahara (1885-1942). Around 60 boats decorated with lanterns float down the canals of Yanagawa at night, with performances played out on riverside stages. For the event’s finale, fireworks light up the night sky. 白秋祭水上遊行
緬懷詩人・北原白秋 (1885-1942) 在故鄉柳川的夜晚舉行的祭典。 約 60 艘佈滿冓火與紙燈籠的小船，從城堀水門往下游出發 ( 遊船 )。 沿岸舞台上有管樂隊、古琴以及無形文化財產「飛龍神轎」的演出， 最後以充滿著歡迎及緬懷之情的煙火迎來終幕。
白秋祭水上パレード
하쿠슈 축제 수상 퍼레이드
19 42년 11월 2일에 세상을 떠난 시인 키타하라 하쿠슈를 그리며 고향인 야나가와가 실시하는 축제. 화톳불과 등불로 장식된 약 60척의 배가 줄지어 강 위를 유람한다. 코스 근처에 마련된 무대에서는 각종 퍼포먼스가 펼쳐지며 불꽃놀이가 행사의 피날레를 장식한다.

Held since the 1500s, and recently designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. 11/4 (Sun.) KYUSHU RAINBOW PRIDE 2018
This event is a celebration of life and Japanese LGBT culture in a free society and was attended by 7,000 people last year. The parade leaves Reisen Park at 2 pm and marches to Tenjin and back over the course of an hour. Held six times a year around Japan, the final tournament of the year is in Fukuoka this month. For two weeks in November the streets of Fukuoka are made more exciting by the odd glimpse of the rikishi (wrestlers), their hulking mass, elegantly fanned top-knot, full kimono and aroma of talcum powder making them an easy spot amongst the locals.

Historic temples, shrines and gardens in the Hakata area will be beautifully illuminated in the colors traditionally used in HakataOri Textile. It’s also an opportunity to enter locations not usually open to the public. Some of the sites become busy, so arrive early to avoid queues. 116TH HAKATA-ORI EXHIBITION
Hakata-Ori Textile is a local folk craft with 777 years of tradition. It has been popular for centuries for use in kimono and obi as a silk textile thanks to its tensility and thickness of the fabric. At the event, examples of Hakata-ori will be displayed inside Jotenji Temple, the birthplace of Hakata-ori. The location itself is a good reason to attend as it is usually closed to the public. Peruse the pieces on display and vote for your favorite. Enjoy the autumn foliage and optional outdoor tea ceremony (fee req.) in the Japanese karesansui (rock) garden. Yasuhiro Suzuki applies his playful and unique presentation to everyday objects and concepts, turning them into objects of art. His 18-meter long “Aerial Being” can be seen reclining and facing the sky at Reisen Park from Nov. 1 ~ Nov. 3. Location might change in case of high winds or strong rain.
U.m.a. (2004), by Hitoshi Ushijima
After meeting famous dancer Min Tanaka, Kurume-based artist Hitoshi Ushijima developed an interest in performance art. Located on the first floor of an old apartment building, Chai Tea Heron specializes in the spiced milk tea called chai. Owner Kunihiro Takei, who also runs a curry shop, opened the cafe last December to offer a place where people can leisurely enjoy chai. Heron's chai latte features Ukiha (Fukuoka) organic black and 10 spices including the standard cinnamon, cardamom, cloves as well as rose hips and moringa. Original offerings include a caffeine-free turmeric latte and a spicy chocolate chai. Shop manager Saori Yoshimura makes every chai to order, grinding and adjusting the spices to the customer's liking.

HISTORICAL KABASHIMA RESIDENCE PUBLIC VIEWING
This two-story wooden building constructed in approximately 1897 served as the primary residence for the Mitsuiki family. The structures, including the main residence, warehouses, gates, and fences, from late Meiji to early Taisho era have been well maintained. In every corner of the property, fine workmanship of joinery craftsmen, plaster craftsmen, and painters of the time can be seen, not to mention glass with engraved family crests, columns of bamboo and plum, and much more. Tucked back in a corner of Itoshima Picnic Village, immediately across from Keya no Oto sits Miwa Nakamura’s old American camping trailer. Inside are displays of her dried fruits and vegetables, drink and ice cream menu. Nakamura is a native of Keya who stumbled upon making dried fruits, but soon realized it was a way to help nearby growers. She uses only Itoshima grown produce. Amaou strawberries are her best seller, followed by shiranui (a citrus similar to dekopon). Small bags are ¥250~, and larger ones are ¥500 and ¥600. It’s very fitting indeed for this second generation framer’s shop to be located in such a picturesque location. The sight of this twostory building with its spacious green yard and private sandy beach is a worthy visit on its own. On the ground floor, Tomoyuki Ishikawa makes custom frames for paintings, photographs, and whatever customers want, while on the second floor his wife cuts hair. Ishikawa’s good sense doesn’t end with his frames. He’s also the curator of the shop filled with an eclectic and an unique collection of furnishings, art, and accessories.

Recently, more and more non-Japanese are discovering what a wonderful place Itoshima is to live and visit. But thanks to Studio Kura and their popular artist in residence program, at least 300 artists from 30 different countries have enjoyed one to three month stays here since 2007. KURUME KASURI DISCOVERY TOUR NOV. 2018 Join us for a special tour behind the scenes at Kurume kasuri artisan workshops. We’ll witness traditional natural dyeing and textile weaving, and we’ll make our own natural indigo dyed bandanna! After a steamed eel lunch (a local delicacy) we’ll go to an orchard to pick persimmon, and finally, visit a Kurume kasuri exhibition to shop! Book now - seats are limited!

Enjoy free time to join the Chikugo Village Kasuri Open House event to see the natural indigo dyeing and weaving processes. Everyone will design and dye their own bandanna. It’s yours to keep!
