Model Behavior How To Behave Professionally While Still Having Fun With What You Love! By LaTanya Ward Showers, LWDesires

There are several industry standards and requirements to be met but at the top you will always find professionalism. A professional model is expected to be prepared with a portfolio displaying a variety of poses and looks. Your portfolio will most likely be your best selling product so it is definitely in your best interest to work with professionals if you can. A professional model is also expected to be in shape and to take pride in her outer appearance. It doesn’t matter if you are a size two or twelve; eating healthy, exercising, and keeping up your appearance applies to all models. If you are a healthy, glowing, and fit model in your pictures the client will expect to see that when you show up for castings and work.

In the modeling business it is not just about looking fabulous it’s also about being polite and courteous. Not only should you treat the people you work for professionally but also treat the other models you are working with professionally. Besides, some models wear dual hats and you never know who is observing. Don’t let your dream of a professional plus model career pass you by because you haven’t taken the time to research. In doing your research you will find that being courteous and professional is almost always mentioned. Take advantage of the resources that will help you on your path. Learn the rules, be prepared financially, take the business seriously, and have fun. It’s ok to have fun on the job just make sure you get the work done. I am certain some of the most successful models have fun at what they are doing.

Just like with any other highly competitive business learning how to behave professionally and get along with others will increase your chances of being chosen for more jobs. Because competition is high there are always new and fresh faces hoping to make it to the top so if you are being inconsiderate and obnoxious word will get around soon and nobody will want to work with you. It’s about long-term success so put your best foot and good attitude forward. One of the most rewarding things about being a model is to make it to the top and have a career spanned over many years. However, a beautiful face alone will not get you there. Reputation, professionalism, and a pleasing attitude are attributes of the greatest models of all time

Feeling Good About You

A lot of women struggle in this area of life because they have not been taught how to respect, love and protect other women. If you know someone, (if not yourself) that finds it hard to get along with women, it’s probably because they were not raised in healthy female to female relationships. Sister to sister rivalry, abandonment or neglect by your mother, or the “famous” she put a man before me, has been the downfall with female relationships. It starts at home! Proverbs 22:6, states, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” If women were taught how to love, and respect women at a young age, this may not be a major issue as it is today. Mother/daughter, sister/sister, or neice/aunt relationships are the first female relationships we experience. If you have not been taught how to respect your mother, sister, aunt or any woman, how do you know how to treat women?

Model: SaritaSackie PhotosByKai Hair &Make Up: IeshaNichole

The women on TV are getting paid to act and expose themselves. At the end of the day they all probably sit back laugh and have drinks. Even down to the men, women compete and will date a married man or committed man because they have no respect for themselves or the other woman. A man and his friend can date the same woman and they are cool. They will laugh and talk about it. Women will hold a grudge, roll their eyes, and stomp their feet. However, situations do occur that may bother you mentally, but it should not affect your heart. We must pray for each other and keep it moving. Here are some things to consider:

Dysfunctional female relationships within families affect how we interact with other women. Unhealthy female relationships are strongholds that are keeping women in bondage, chains, and shackles. They are strongholds that only God can tear down. We must pray and ask God to strengthen us where we are weak. In your childhood life, if all you saw or heard was cursing, animosity, judging other women, or comparing big sister to little sister, the older we get, we will do the same thing with women. Therefore, when you witness another female “making it or doing well”, we respond by hating instead of congratulating. As a child growing up that’s what some women witnessed in their families. Even if we see a female that is a little less fortunate than we are, we are quick to judge or talk about them, because 9 times out 10, women in our family responded that way. It’s cultural conditioning! , that has to be broken. Social media and Reality TV play a major role. All the quarrels, comparison, and competition is robbing women of their true identity.

1. It starts with you! Be confident and accept who you are. Accept the woman of our past and embrace the woman of the future. You must first love yourself before you can love a sister friend. It’s usually a deeper issue that has nothing to do with another woman. The best female relationship you can have is the one with yourself. 2. Break the Cycle! Just because we saw it, doesn’t mean it was right or we have to continue it. It’s time to break the generational curse. 3. Embrace her! We never know what women go through. We are more alike than different. There is life and death in the tongue. You can build her up or tear her down. Speak positive to other women! 4. Communicate! If we don’t communicate, how will we know another woman’s pain or hurt? Communication is the bridge to healthy relationships. *A profound Biblical story is the relationship between Ruth and Naomi. Read the book of Ruth!* Natasha L. Brown www.treatingtresses.net

The Heart of the Matter How many of us think about our purpose on a daily basis, you know the reason why you were created? Or the reason why you were given certain talents and characteristics? Even better how you can take your trials and tribulations and turn that into your purpose. I believe that my purpose is to help people to understand health and fitness, as a passion of mine I hardly consider it work. I am an advocate of health and am proud. February was national heart month so I want to address this topic that is an epidemic in our community. I have a personal vendetta against heart disease it was one of several diseases that took my mothers life at the age of 47. Heart disease, which can also be called cardiovascular or coronary heart disease, is a simple term used to describe several problems related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke. With a fear of it being hereditary I went through a 80 lb weight loss myself and have made it my mission to spread knowledge and awareness about health related issues that are the cause of poor eating habits and lack of exercise.

There are quite a few symptoms for heart disease but what some people don't know is that they are slightly different in women. Women can experience a heart attack without the pressure on their chest unlike men. Nieca Goldberg, M.D., medical director for the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women's Health at NYU’s Langone Medical Center and an American Heart Association volunteer says that woman may experience shortness of breath, pressure or pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen, dizziness, fainting, upper back pressure or extreme fatigue. Even though heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, women often chalk up the symptoms to less life-threatening conditions like acid reflux, the flu or normal aging. A heart attack strikes someone about every 34 seconds. It occurs when the blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off completely. This happens because the arteries that supply the heart with blood can slowly narrow from a buildup of fat. Ladies please don't disregard any symptoms that you have that are out of the ordinary. Listen to your body it will tell you when something is wrong. This disease and what happened to my mother is my purpose of creating Curvy Chick Fitness, I want women to be vibrant, happy, and healthy and it starts with health and fitness. There needs to be awareness in women's health our issues and symptoms are different than a man even though the remedy and prevention methods are very similar. Good health affects your life in so many ways you feel better, look better, and more alert to what is going on in your life mentally, physically, and emotionally. If you can't do it alone then hire someone. People take better care of their cars and homes with all these up upgrades and remodeling but then treat their body like crap it doesn't measure up. Invest in a nutritionist and a trainer if you feel that you have the will power to do it on your own then fine do that. Do your research and find what works best for you. It's your life take control and discover your purpose.

* Stretching the arms and legs before and after exercising helps prepare the muscles for activity and helps prevent injury and muscle strain. Regular stretching also increases your range of motion and flexibility. * Cardiovascular or aerobic activity strengthens the heart and lungs and improves the body's ability to use oxygen. Aerobic exercise has the most benefits for your heart. Over time, aerobic exercise can help decrease your heart rate and blood pressure at rest and improve your breathing. * Aerobic exercises include: walking, jogging, jumping rope, bicycling (stationary or outdoor), cross-country skiing, skating, rowing, and low-impact aerobics or water aerobics. I hope this article finds you in good health if not then I hope it helps get you there. Sincerely, Charity Lynette of Curvy Chick Fitness @charitylynette & @curvychickfit

X-TWO IS SET TO X-PLODE in the U.S MARKET by FBM Contributing Editor - Catherine Schuller I recently encountered a brand new collection set to launch on the shores of America in a few months. Imagine my surprise as I pass scouring the aisles of the Javits Center at the MODA expo this past February looking to see what new additions to the plus size lines were available, when lo and behold I ran into Judy Collier, the Director of Sales at Burr Fashion based in the Netherlands and Canada. She introduced me to her showroom rep, Eddie Penn of Penn Centrall located in West 38th Street in the garment center in my home base of NYC. Eddie told me the Winter Collection was due to arrive the next week and he sent me an email inviting me to stop by. What can I say? I love this line! It made me realize that I didn't need to feel upset because Eloquii announced its exit from the plus size market. I had high hopes for the Large Limited division, but when I saw their website, although consistent and cleanly presented, I remember thinking that Eloquii was just a mish mash of a lot of items that coordinated well with other items in a wardrobe, but the wearer had to know how to incorporate them into her closet. The price point was a bit high for the repertoire of reliables that were not that special, as the look was similarly available on many other plus size websites already out there. Not so with X-Two... There is a whole carefully coordinated look with at least eight pieces for each story (collection segment)....the trend colors are all there, the trend silhouettes are all there, and they all work back beautifully with each other. The details are incredibly interesting and the fabrics are all calculated mix of textures that left me applauding... It was so look well thought out and designed! The line has an almost Elena Miro feel to it, but more contemporary and stylishly sporty. There were at least seven collections, with coats that I was drooling over! Here's a sneak peek, more to come as I figure out how to assist them and “Get the word out!"

When Love Isn’t Enough…

Finding My Way Back to Me By Kymberly Nichole

What a beautiful winter day, the sun is shining, birds are chirping, feels like spring is coming soon. I feel a renewed sense of energy and happiness and I sit up in bed and think back…9 years ago this time I was in such a dark place within my mind. It had been a tough few days during the winter of 2003, I was sick, diagnosed with bronchitis and walking pneumonia. I was at home laying on my sofa trying to rest and he walked in, dressed in his work uniform. He sits down on the sofa across from me and I ask “what’s going on, why are you home so early?” He took a sip of the vodka he had poured before sitting down. I asked again “what are you doing home so early and why are you drinking so early in the morning?” He looked at me, and as calm as the eye of a hurricane said “she is pregnant”. I sat up, confused, light headed with a feeling of anger coming over me and I didn’t know why. I asked “who is pregnant?” He told me her name, and that he had been having an affair with her for a little over a year. I felt like I had left my body and I was watching the rest of this scene unfold right in front of me. I watched myself stand up, crying, screaming, I was inconsolable. He tried to calm me down, he grabbed me and pulled me close and I snatched my body away from his. This was like a made for TV movie, my husband of 2 years had just told me he cheated on me and there was a baby on the way. I asked him “why?” He said “because I wasn’t ready to be a father and a husband”. I lost all composure and I remember grabbing a chair from our dining room and smashing it over his back and just punching him while he continued to try and calm me down and in that moment I felt breath return to my body, I had come back. I calmed down; he sat on the sofa crying, begging for forgiveness, saying we could work it out. I sat on the steps in our house and called my parents, and my sister. They immediately left their jobs and came to see about me, but before they arrived I demanded to know where “she” was. He told me they worked together and that she was at the office.

I like to think of myself as a rationale person, at that moment I became irrational and borderline insane. I grabbed my keys and left our home, I drove to where she was working to settle the score as I saw it at that time. Little did I know he called her and told her I was on my way there. She barricaded herself in the office, as she should, I was uncontrollable. My father called me on my cell phone and in his calm voice said to me, “Nikki, you don’t want to do anything you will be sorry for, think of your 2 year old baby girl, she needs her mama”. And at that moment I felt like I snapped out of my rage, I got in my car and went back home, to find my family there waiting for me. It was a tough couple of weeks after that day. I had prayed, and talked to my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, in an effort to figure out what I should do with my life and my marriage. I decided that for the sake of our daughter and because my marriage vows meant so much to me that I would try and make it work and hold on to my family. We sought counseling with our Pastor who married us; he said some things that were hard for him to hear, but in order to keep our family intact he took his advice. He had to change jobs, as it was too much of a distraction to have this scandal looming at his place of business. We moved, and a couple of months later found out that I was pregnant with our 2nd child. I tried to put all that had happened out of my mind and focus on our growing family; after all I loved this man. I dedicated my life to him and our family. It was hard and after 8 months our youngest daughter was born and 6 months after her birth I realized that I was kidding myself. He was still lying, and I felt he was not committed to me or our family. At that moment I decided to pack myself and my girls and leave for good. I moved in with my mom for a few months while I got myself together and back on my feet. I finally got an apartment for me and my girls and we were well on our way to a new life. At least that’s what I thought; while our surroundings had changed I still had not found that inner peace. I was in turmoil within my own mind for 4 years after that faithful day. I had days when I felt that I was ugly, and incapable of being loved, days when I didn’t want to get out of bed. I was thankful for my family, they helped me with my girls, they listened when I needed to cry and they held me up when I was down. But I realized I needed to hold myself up or I would never get better. I decided I needed to talk to someone; I went to a few sessions with a therapist, which helped me to see my life in an objective manner. I didn’t share with anyone that I was seeing my therapist, I didn’t want to be perceived as weak. Later I realized that, that was my own issue and that after all I had been through, it was totally understandable.

When Love Isn’t Enough…

Finding My Way Back to Me (Cont’d)

By Kymberly Nichole

Well it’s the summer of 2007, and by God’s grace I’m starting to feel good about myself again, my girls are growing and thriving and I decided it was time for me to get back out there and start dating again. I was finally at the point where I knew he wasn’t the right man for me and that was thru no fault of my own, so if it is meant to be, I will find that right man for me! It’s now 2013 and I am a better person than I was before I got married. I am stronger, wiser, and my mind knows the love that my heart desires. No, I’m not remarried, but I’m still dating and have met some great people along the way. I have a flourishing career as a Plus Size Model, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist and most importantly “I love me”. I wake up every day and look in the mirror and am happy with the woman looking back at me. My girls are 11 & 8 years old, and they are amazing young ladies. They know some of what happened and why their parents aren’t together. They have had some questions and I’m sure there will be more as they get older. My main goal is to make sure no matter what has happened or will happen that they know they are loved and are #1 in my life and that their father loves them as well. As for me, my heart is open, I hold no grudges, and most importantly I have allowed myself to forgive. THE QUEST FOR LOVE... ARE YOU READY?

What is love?

Is it what makes the world go round? or is it a hollow promise? I may sound a bit harsh but I don’t believe that love conquerors all or that it is enough. Am I old and bitter? Not at all - I still believe in love, I open the front door every morning hoping to find my knight in shinning amour ready and waiting to sweep me of my feet ... but I have also been around the block a few times, kissed a few frogs, even danced with some handsome princes (a story for another time!) and let me tell you that love is an investment firstly in yourself and then in the person who is worthy of your love. Love alone cannot stand the test of time, it has to be forged on strong foundations and only you can lay those foundations. So, if we are to follow the knight in shining amour scenario there must be a quest. Consider me your fairy god mother and here I gift to you 3 challenges that you must present to your potential suitors ...

I am a Goddess Prove thyself to me! Oh yes we are all goddesses and keepers of the mystical charms, but we are not going to give them away. You do not have to kiss every frog you come across in the search for your prince. Even a prince trapped inside a frog will act as a prince. If it looks like a frog, acts like a frog and hops like a frog ... it is a frog and therefore not worthy of your charms! If you don’t respect yourself, why should anyone else?

Self Respect Respect for ourselves is a state of mind and always the most alluring part of ourselves. Anyone not seeing the allure should be cast aside like last seasons’ handbag. Self respect is about being the best that we can be. Take pride in who you are and what you do.

I am more than comfortable in the skin that I am in!!! I know that I am not perfect; I constantly striving to do better. However, I can honestly say I don't have one insecure bone in my body, although that wasn’t always the case. When I step out, I know that I am just as amazing and desirable as the next woman. I am bold and bad enough to stand beside any woman and not feel any form of jealousy or insecurity. It is sad that society has placed all these stereotypes on us based on physical features and other irrelevant things. All attractive people are not dumb and/or arrogant. All fat people don't suffer from low self esteem. Every person with a nice body is not a sex object. Every rich person is not snobby. We have to learn that we are not required to conform to any of the tags that society places on us. Our differences are what separate us and make us unique. Everyone doesn’t look the same, everyone doesn’t act the same and people are attracted to different things.

Variety really is the spice of life, so don’t count yourself out because you are different from others. It is mandatory that you learn to embrace the particulars of your existence no matter what they are. That doesn’t mean that you can’t strive for something better, it just means you know exactly who you are and you love yourself. Once you are in tune with yourself, no one can use it against you. A lot of times people are hurt by others perception of them, simply because they have failed to come to terms with whom they are. I am a plus size woman, I have been for years, and it doesn't make me feel any less of a woman. I am confident in who I am and what I am capable of. I know that my physical attributes are but a small piece of who I am. I have been teased and talked about but my feelings have never been hurt by anything that was true. I have been called fat. I have been called a bitch. My reply to both is,” yeah…. AND!!!” I know that I am over weight; I am the person that purchases those size 22 clothes. I know that I can be a little bitchy at times, deal with it or keep it moving! I had to learn through life experiences that you can’t please everyone. I also learned that if you don’t love yourself, giving and receiving love is nearly impossible.

Many women feel that they have to be a certain size in order to be considered sexy, but the truth is, “confidence is sexy in any size!” Just as we all are different physically; we have different desires and attractions. What appeals to one person may not spark the interest of another at all. There are individuals who love women with curves and there are those who don’t. There are those who could honestly care less about the shape of your body but find it sexy to be intelligent and ambitious. Sexiness is not wrapped in what you wear, you don’t have to be nude to be sexy; you can be fully clothes and be considered just as sexy as a person who is totally nude. It is not what you wear but how you wear it. Truth is, you never know what floats the next person’s boat. However, what you can be sure of is, if you don’t think your sexy… no one else will. And honestly, why should they?

Who cares what others feel about you!!! If you know that you are great‌ Then to hell with your dress size, your height, your cocked eyes or your big nose! The details of your existence will not change and if they do, that still doesn’t guarantee acceptance. If you change to gain the approval of naysayers, they may begin to embrace you. However, there will be an entirely new group of individuals that find flaws in the new you. Remember that being sexy begins and ends with you, not your hair, not your clothes, not even your figure. Your sexiness is about your ability to love yourself and display confidence in every area of your life. So unless you plan to constantly reinvent yourself to accommodate others, get comfortable in the skin that you are in!!!!
