When you receive this issue we will have enjoyed one of the annual events of the British community, the celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday organized by the British Society and held at the British Centre. Full coverage and photos will be included in our next edition. This time last year, we waited not knowing whether Britain was in, or out of the European Community, and this year we had another surprise, with the recent elections in the UK. It would appear this is a time of year where the politic pundits get their maths wrong. We have also been saddened by the tragic and insane acts in Manchester and London, and the awful fire in Kensington. Our local politics, whether municipal or Federal, leave a lot to be desired, and we continue every day with a new personage in our newspapers having committed some aditional misdemeanour. The amounts involved are mind blowing. Spotlight continues to depend on the welcome contributions of articles from the

Highlights of the last two months WEDDING OF IAN COOK AND VANESSA INOVE On Sunday April 30th, the Pipe Band was invited to play at Ian Cook’s wedding out in BOTOCATU – We played during the wedding ceremony and did a special show for Ian and his charming wife, Vanessa Inoue at the reception party. Ian Cook is the President of the St. Andrew Society in São Paulo. SHAMROCK CUP in MONTEVIDEO.- INDIVIDUAL PIPING COMPETITION Four of the us in the band went to Montevideo to support our Pipe Major, Thiago Scavazin,who was competing in the Shamrock Cup , Individual Piping Competition – This competition is sponsored by the Riverside Pipe Band of Montevideo and the Shannon Irish Pub, Montevideo Uruguay. – The competition is quite long as all pipers have to play a pebroch. a series of variations on a basic theme, which is very difficult then a MSR – march , strathspey and reel, and finally a 6/8 march with a hornpipe and jig.

• Future events for the Band are Festival Internacional MUSEU do IMMIGRANTE – SP on 4th.June, and the WINTER CEILIDH at SPAC TOWN CLUB on FRIDAY 4th.AUGUST – Hope to see you there.

There were six competitors from Argentine , Brazil and Uruguay One of the judges came from Chile which will be the host country of the next GATHERING of PIPE BANDS in SOUTH AMERICA. Thiago representing SASPD and Brazil obtained third Place – a great result here for us. BSSP participated in St. Pauls School International Day, PTA´s main Charity fund raising event on May 27th. This year, FBB had its own stall and we communicated who we are, the services we offer to the elderly and we made it in such a way that it was interactive. We created a virtual backdrop and offered the question “What kind of elderly will you be when you grow old “. They then dressed up as an elder, chose a backdrop and took a picture which was printed on the spot and had a magnet so they could take it home and stick it in their fridge - with the FBB logo and our slogan : “Assisting the elderly since 1947”. Just by making people ( young or adult) stop to imagine, we are sensatizing people in realizing that the cause of caring for the elderly is everyone´s cause because we will all grow old.

CULTURAL SYNOPSIS

Fatality rates for drivers begin to climb after age 65. From ages 75 to 84, the rate is equal to the death rate of teenage drivers. For drivers 85 and older, the fatality rate rockets to nearly four times higher than that for teens. In Japan fatality rates in traffic are near to zero except for the elderly drivers. This is a problem that Japan is seriously considering and old drivers have to take a yearly driving course, be evaluated by a doctor and interviewed carefully about their driving during that year. Shouldn’t we consider this issue more seriously, too, and avoid getting to the stage of the example of an elderly driver who got so nervous in traffic that he abandoned his car in the middle of the road and walked away? Jader Guadalupe Ávila , the ‘Pyjama Uncle’ – (O tio do pijama da Vila Madalena). At work, as a civil servant, he was told once that he should dress better and not come in washed out clothes, and that’s when he decided he’d only wear pyjamas from then on. He says his style dates back to his early childhood when mothers bought a rolls of fabric and made everything in the house with it: curtains, tablecloth, sheets and clothes for the children, normally large and loose so that they could grow into them. His debut was during a carnival season when he announced that he would walk down Rua Augusta wearing pyjamas and he had 30 more pyjamas wearers following him. He has about 200 pyjamas. He would design some, he was given some others. He was told to patent his idea but he refuses. He does not wish to make money out of his whim. He also carries female handbags as more fits into them, he says and he tries to match handbag, sandals and umbrella. He was married once and has one daughter who accepts his style. His former wife, never would and he does not intend to marry a second time. Someone who worked with him said: Pyjama Uncle is a good soul, did his work properly, never bothered you and never asked you for money! When you next happen to be in Vila Madalena, you may just come across him in one of the streets.

‘On Golden Pond’ . do you remember this film with Henry and Jane Fonda back in 1980, based on the play by Ernest Thompson written and produced in 1979? A film to remember without much effort; and the play was just produced here in São Paulo starring Ary Fontoura and Ana Lucia Torre and three more very fine actors. ‘Num Lago Dourado’ is on at Teatro Renaissance (near Augusta/Paulista) and goes till July 7th but may have the season extended as it has full house every night. You will remember grumpy, old Norman and his sweet wife Ethel. The daughter who does not know how to make it up with her father and arrives with the new boyfriend and his teenage boy who helps old Norman to enjoy life again. Some of us will recognize ourselves in the characters and have a good laugh. Christina Thornton

BRITISH CLASSIC CAR SHOW

The British Classic Car Show will be a British Society fundraising event for the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência with the assistance of the Federação Brasileira de Veículos Antigos (FBVA) and Box 54, which will take place in August 12th at Box 54 (https://www.box54. com.br). It will be the first British Classic Car Show ever in Brazil and we will have a classic British car exhibition, along with food trucks, car rides and more attractions. Congratulations to the São Paulo Garden Club on winning two important National Garden Clubs awards for their 2016 Annual Flower Show – Climate Change. The Sun Burst Rosette awarded to flower shows merited with judging points of 95+ out of a 100 and the Silver Tray for the best flower show schedule from an International Affiliate. This year our Annual Flower Show will be on the 30th September and 1st October at the Brazilian British Centre by kind permission of the Cultura Inglesa. May Churrasco We had our normal fun Churrasco on the 6th of May this year. It was a great success with more than 124 guests which is an excellent turnout. We were worried about the rain that we had on the days prior to the churrasco but on the day the weather collaborated and it stayed dry for us. We received many favourable comments on the day and the feedback that we received after the event was very positive. The raffle was very successful and was greatly assisted by the Cubs selling the tickets. Âˇ The raffle prizes such

as the Hotel and basket prizes were considered outstanding. We had one special event that took place at the Churrasco and that was the presentation to our previous President Derek Barnes of his British Empire Medal by Jo Crellin the Consul General here in Sao Paulo. FROM MINDFULNESS TO WELLBEING In my last column I stressed that mindfulness is simple, but not easy. For those of you who were/are thinking of adding mindfulness to your daily routine, congratulations! I hope you will soon reap the benefits, and please let me know if/how mindfulness helps improve your general wellbeing.

Which leads me to my final point: Now that the bulk of “Spotlight” is online, I have stopped receiving feedback, which I regularly received in “the good old days”. Perhaps this means that most readers have stopped reading the articles, or are ready for a change. Since Rosemary Dow moved to Spain, I have missed her Book Reviews, and would consider writing reviews myself if Wellbeing, as described by Martin Seligman in “Flour- that is what readers would prefer. In many respects, wellbeing also boils down to gratitude and kindness, which are two sides of the same coin. Various research articles have proved that “doing a kindness produces the single most reliable increase in well-being” (Seligman). The many kind volunteers who work for the British Society and its related charities are examples of people who deserve our gratitude. So much goes on behind the scenes that we never hear about, even in this newsletter.

HEALTH AND FITNESS

CLOGGED PIPES Recently, it has become fashionable to argue that high blood cholesterol is not the main factor involved in coronary heart disease. There is even a video circulating in the social networks by a local “celebrity physician” advancing this cause. To make matters further complicated, a recent editorial in a medical periodical (British Journal of Sports Medicine) states that coronary artery disease is a chronic inflammatory condition, best reduced by simple lifestyle choices, rather than focusing on LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. They go as far as stating that the conceptual model of coronary arteries as kitchen pipes clogged with dietary saturated fat is “just plain wrong”. The authors highlight several studies to support their position, including one from 2014 in which a Mediterranean-style diet high in fat from sources such as extra virgin oil and nuts reduced the risk of coronary heart disease by 30% in high-risk patients compared to those following a low-fat diet. Another study from 2015 that found no association between saturated fat consumption and all-cause mortality, coronary heart disease mortality, ischemic stroke or type 2 diabetes in healthy adults. Finally, they mention a 2016 systematic review concluding that LDL cholesterol is not associated with cardiovascular disease and is inversely associated with all-cause mortality in the elderly.

200 studies with more than 2 million participants and over 200 million person-years of follow-up, shows that there is a remarkably consistent dose-dependent association between the absolute magnitude of exposure of the vasculature to LDL cholesterol and the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Another objection is that the authors of the first editorial seem to conflate dietary fat with LDL cholesterol levels in the blood.

DOCTOR ALBERT SCHWEITZER Training personnel and Community support for the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship William Moffitt Harris – Part 8 Over the years the Lambarènè Hospital opened its doors to apprenticeships, probationers and internships. These periods of permanence at the Hospital aimed not only at giving these students an opportunity to learn more about practical community tropical medicine but also indoctrination on the principles of The Philosophy for Life. These future fellows are at first submitted to a screening set of interviews in their own countries or universities whereby whether vocational and psychological attributes of the candidates suffice or not for their future missionary work in similar centers around the world. Great importance has been assigned to the personality of these candidates even while working at the hospital. Team work and profound respect for the patients and their families have always been considered extremely essential. A written compromise warranting exclusive dedication for at least ten years of their lives, on a full time basis, to the cause has been considered as very essential when sent to other countries or even different places in their own countries. Patience, respect, love and dedication has been a motto heard all the time. Poor communities with considerable lack of basic medical and dental care, with no hygienic principles as to sanitation and eating procedures have been the primarily urgent focus of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. More than eighty percent of the students adhere completely to the program and many stay on for the remainder of their lives ascending into the teaching and monitoring spheres of the institution’s staff. The Fellowship movement has grown considerably and thousands of papers and reports have been published and conferences been organized everywhere. People who got to know Dr. Schweitzer personally have donated entire cash collected from theatre boxes and concert halls entirely to his cause, as for example the

famous harpsichordist Mme. Alice Ehlers who had met the Schweitzer couple in Africa and Edouard NiesBerger (1904 – 2002), the well known organist and conductor, who knew the doctor when a little boy at their home town. After studying conducting with Bruno Walter in Salzburg, Austria, Nies-Berger was named organist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Organ Department as well as chairman of the Peabody Conservatory of Baltimore. He sponsored several organist presentations in the States having himself played in many of them and often disclosing some of Schweitzer’s compositions. Nies-Berger was a native of Strasbourg, Alsace, and grew up playing the organ at his father’s church where Schweitzer preached. In 1922 he migrated to America and played the organ in many parts of the States in houses of worship. In 1949 he reunited with the doctor and for six years collaborated in the completion of Schweitzer’s organ music by Bach. In the 1970’s Mr. Nies-Berger gave recitals in Europe and wrote several books including a memoir of his friendship with Schweitzer. In 1991 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Art Institute of Alsace and a couple of years later he was honored as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. The Fellowship gives all the technical and financial assistance and support to the Medical Research Unit of the Hospital, focusing mainly on Malaria, it being at present considered one of Africa’s most respected and advanced research centers in the continent which has a death rate of over a million cases of Malaria per year, mostly children. The Fellowship also furnishes all the material, personnel and financial help necessary to cope with family care, health education and vaccination of poor communities.

OBITUARIES

Henrietta Mair Denson (Rita) 26/Dec/1920 - 25/ Apr/2017 Rita was born in Glasgow on the 26thDecember 1920 . During her early childhood the family moved south to Bothwell, in Lanarkshire. She was the eldest of seven children.

After 32 years of living in Brazil, Rita retired to Lytham St. Annes , later moving to Christchurch, Dorset. She enjoyed spending time with her family and visiting her 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren both in the UK and in Brazil. Her last visit to Brazil was in Febuary 2017. She will be dearly missed by all her family. Robin Dods 1940 - 2017

In wartime Britain she volunteered for the WAAFs –She was stationed in Epping where she had the job of guiding planes back to Britain, where she met her husband Frank, they married in 1945. After the war Frank returned to his old job working for a shipping company in Liverpool. One day he came home and told Rita that they would need to move if he wanted to gain promotion. The next day he came home and surprised her with the news that the promotion was to a posting in Brazil. They moved in October 1946. Rita had 4 children , all born in Brazil. Her eldest daughter stayed ,but the others decided to make their homes in England. Rita loved to travel and visited many countries including Central and North America, Canada, Hawaii, Japan, South Africa and quite a few in Europe! Rita played golf for over 60 years and her trophy cabinet was proof of her success. She began playing as a child with her father at St. Andrew´s and her passion for the sport continued throughout her life , becoming Ladies Captain at San Fernando Golf Course in 1971 and 1972. Rita was active for many years knitting, sewing and baking for the church bazaar, and in earlier years making Athol brose for St. Andrew events, as well as teaching Scottish dancing at SPAC downtown.

After a long illness, Robin passed away peacefully on 11 May.Robin was born in Uruguay, brought up in Cuba, then Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. He joined his brother, Murray, at Gordonstoun school in Scotland where he excelled at sports of all kinds. Joining Coats in Glasgow, he met his wife, Jean and they had 3 children. Robin worked in Italy, Peru and Chile returning to Glasgow in 1990. Son of Toby Dods, a stalwart figure of St Andrew Society, Robin was a people person par excellence. He carved out a niche for himself in the whisky industry. He had an unquenchable zest for life and friendship. As a close friend said,” Robin, you were a larger than life character and a real friend to all of us. There are friends in three continents who will mourn your passing but who will have great memories of the time spent in your company.” John Crawford Is it with sadness that we announce the passing of former Saint Andrew Society President John Crawford, on 24th May. John was one of the longest living Society members and for many years was also a Cultura Inglesa board member. A memorial service was held on 31st May at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral. May he rest in peace.

THE DAY OF PENTECOST

In many ways we would describe the above scene as something from a science fiction movie, except for the fact that science fiction movies were something totally unknown when the Bible was written. The scene above describes what happened to the remaining disciples of Jesus on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon them and transformed them from frightened men into courageous Christians. It was on

this day that the Church was born and Peter boldly preached the first Christian sermon to the people in Jerusalem. It is because of the appropriateness of this day, that Bp. Roger went to Botucatu to ordain Luiz Eduardo Gomes, as a new deacon in the Movimento Anglicano no Brasil. Michael Moran
