Communication is a two-way path. In order to involve our members, the British Society needs to communicate, and what better way than the bi monthly Spotlight? You have been asked to reply if you wish to receive the electronic version. Not all of you are happy about the electronic version. On the other hand, the costs of the printed version have to be considered. Let us know your opinion. This is the last edition of the 2017Spotlight. Another year of world confusion, dramatic weather, and the awful and tragic deaths caused by mindless people whether terrorists or not. On the home front, we continue to be amazed at the scale of corruption, and wonder who is next to appear on our front pages. During the year, the British community in São Paulo celebrated various community events, especially the Queen’s Birthday, and the very special, and very British churrascos organized by the volunteers of the Royal British Legion .Let us not forget the various cocktail parties, dances, bazaars and other charitable events put on by so many volunteers with dedicate long hours to make these events so special. I should like to take this opportunity to thank all of our very loyal contributors for their regular and continued support. We would not have a Spotlight without you. One last wish: Please check the deadline date for future issues and do not forget the Community Calendar. Wishing all our readers a very happy Christmas and a healthy and successful 2018. Derrick Marcus

BRITISH SOCIETY

British Society helps more than 30 elderly peolple from the community to go to the doctor Did you know that the British Society takes elderly and vulnerable members from our community to medical appointments and tests, for both preventative and ongoing health requirements? Since February 2017, we have increased from 30 to over 100 individual appointments, assisting them and their family members with this task that is very simple but can, as we all know, upset everybody’s routines. This service is part of our Care Program (Programa Cuidar), our most comprehensive Program. It involves mobilising a team of qualified professionals whose role is to aid such individuals by arranging transport and dealing with minor difficulties inherent to visits to doctors and to medical tests. These professionals can also give us a complete report on everything the doctor said, if the patient is not able to memorize this information by himself. Over the last months, we were able to see that the Care Program has had major positive impact on our community members’ life quality, and addresses many contemporary challenges faced by everyone, including

the day-to-day circumstances of each person’s family members. If you or any of your elderly family members need our assistance with this service, contact Fernanda, our Social Services Coordinator, and she will be happy to help: fernanda@britishsociety.org.br. Should you have any doubts or suggestions about new things we could be doing and/or be doing differently, please feel free to e-mail me at ricardo@britishsociety. org.br. It will be a pleasure to share some ideas regarding our work at the British Society. Last but not least, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, on behalf of the British Society’s board members and staff. We look forward to bringing more good news in 2018! Ricardo Rosado Institutional Development Coordinator ricardo@britishsociety.org.br

The first British Classic Car Show, Saturday 12th August, was a huge success! With 10 sponsors, over 70 classic cars and almost 700 people attending, we managed to create the greatest exhibition of old British vehicles in Brazil. Besides the cars from automakers such as Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini, Austin Healey, Sunbeam, MG, Triumph, Rover and HRG, there was also a great concert by the Beatles Abbey Road, the best Brazilian Beatles cover; delicious food provided by food trucks; Drive4fun offering fun rides on classic and sports car; the Challenging your dreams expo, which inspired many people;

and access Box54’s Collection of Classic Cars, one of the greatest classic car collections in Brazil. Additionally, we were able to show the good work we do for the elderly, through the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência, and gather more funds for its Programs. It was a delightful day, and we can’t wait to start planning more events like this for 2018!

SÃO PAULO YACHT CLUB

SPYC & SAILAWAY Sailing School & Classes Although the São Paulo Yacht Club or “SPYC” (the first and most traditional Sailing Club in São Paulo) is celebrating 100 years this 2017, it was the young ones who really celebrated the recent winter vacations at this charming and most pleasant Sailing Club by the Guarapiranga Lake. Every winter and summer holidays the club holds its sailing classes with one sleep-over especially designed for youngsters. The idea is to teach the art of sailing in a fun way, whilst at the same time practising other sports and games and learning about the history, fauna & flora of this “little oasis” in the chaos of a big city like São Paulo. They had the pleasure of sailing a classic sailboat, one of the first super champion sailboats of the Guarapiranga lake and overall champion in 1935 and another 8 years (as you can learn from reading SPYC’s 100 year Centenary book). Available for sale at SPYC | secretaria@spyc.com. br | (011) 5686-5560 The sailing school does not only work on vacations and is not just for kids. Every weekend we have regular sailing courses for all ages and levels. You can learn how to sail, rent a sailboat, windsurf, Stand up paddle, etc. Come and visit the club and the sailing school, and get to know this little piece of paradise at just a 30 minute drive from the centre of São Paulo.

CULTURAL SYNOPSIS

1. Maybe you have been to Guararema, a town 75km along the Ayrton Senna/Carvalho Pinto stretch, well signposted and easy to get to but you may not know of the events in town, mainly the Nossa Senhora da Escada (patron saint) celebrations in November when you can try the delicious “Afogado” ( a good chunk of meat, fried with garlic, salt and bay leaves, then cooked with onions in one litre of hot water and served with chopped parsley, chives and red peppers, rice and ‘farofa’) . This dish is also served at other occasions, of course. How about eating your way through all these pots of ‘Afogado’ in the picture in the ‘Rancho do Zé Maria’. The celebration includes a Float down the river Paraíba do Sul and a ‘Cavalhada’ (horse riding parade). But, Guararema offers much more. There are about 6 fisheries in the area and the spectacular fish-restaurant Mirante do Paraíba in the Freguesia da Escada district. It consists of indoor and outdoor areas on the river Paraíba and in a small wood with hammocks to enjoy your sest after lunch. Choose a sunny day to get there. Check the menu on their site besides other information. (T. 11-46936055). In December the town gets all Christmassy and attracts many tourists, too. 2. Banco de São Paulo on Praça Antonio Prado is now open for visitation. The art deco building was designed by the architect Arruda Botelho; the clock on the front shows a calendar; a German company which used to produce military tanks made the door to the safe. On

7

each floor there is a trap door which was used as a letter box and a postman collected the correspondence on the ground floor. 3. The Museu do Bixiga, on Rua dos Ingleses, 118, which opens and closes for various reasons, is now open again. Inaugurated in 1981 by Armandinho Puglisi, one of the district characters, quite a promoter, it contains, nowadays, 8 thousand photos and 1.5 thousand objects and the memory of the composer and singer, Adoniran Barbosa. The house dates back to the early XX century... And it is Christmas, again. “One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. PET SHOW 2017 Yes, it rained the week before the PET SHOW - so much so that the Cathedral lawn was soggy. So, on to Plan B! Everything into the Church Hall - great excitement, but steady work done by all the faithful team, and all was ready by midday on Saturday, Aug. 19. Everyone swung into action, doing what had to be done, and what has been done so many times before. Many, many thanks to all the team. Would people come, considering the weather? Would they bring their four-legged friends and family members? The answer was a resounding YES! And we had one of the best Pet SHOWs ever! The hall was crowded with happy faces, people seeing friends they had not seen since the Pet Show last year... The Scouts and Scoutas set up a “passarela” for the Pet Parade in the middle of the hall, and there were four

generations to watch the activity: Grandparents, parentes, children and pets. Photos were taken and are available. Bishop Roger Bird´s blessing was exactly right, as usual, with all listening respectfully, even the dogs. The captive audience was generous and the financial result was one of the best ever! Considering the weather and the rather tight economic situation for all, we were extremely fortunate to have such a success. Many, many thanks to all the kind raffle donors, to all the workers who did a magnificent job, to all the people who attended, and to all who brought their Special Friends... The Associação is most grateful to one and all. Lula May Reed

CARAJÁS SCOUTS

Carajas participation in the Rover Moot in Iceland During the month of July, Carajas Scouts took part in yet another international event, the 15th World Scout Moot in Iceland, an event for Rovers between the ages of 18 and 26. Carajas were represented by Stephan Gallbach (better known as Alemão) and Kim Govier. They both took the opportunity to do some touring before the event visiting some incredible sites in the land of fire and ice. Kim covered the country by car in the 17 days before the event. Starting in the south, she snorkelled in a gap between two continental plaques, visited numerous waterfalls and did some wonderful walks. Went past volcanoes and ice packs ,drove by the fjords, and saw beautiful puffins nesting on steep cliff edges. She relaxed in thermal waters, camped in a canyon and saw whales and focas,. finally joining up with two Rovers from Rio Grande do Sul to finish up on the peninsular of Snaefellenes. Alemão had a shorter tour concentrating on the southern part of Iceland. Together with a group of other scouts he visited the enormous waterfalls and the famous Geyer of the Golden circle, one of the tourist routes most known in the country The two groups met up in Laugardaisholl Reykjavik for the opening ceremony. The Brazilian group was the fourth largest with more than 300 Rovers. The opening ceremony was short and they were soon off to the first part of the Moot the Expedition Centre. The Moot was divided into two parts. In the first four days the participants were allocated different expedition centres located around the island. And on the last five days everyone came together for an enormous camping. There were eleven Expedition centres, each one with up to 700 Rovers. Everyone was in a patrol of 10 people, all from different countries. One tribe consisted of four patrols that did all the activities together and cooked in the same tent. This mix was the

main difference between the Moot and a Jamboree where you tended to be from the same country in your patrol. A great opportunity for the Brazilian Rovers to integrate with other nationalities, Alemão went on the Holaskjol Expedition. The first day involved a hike of 24kms to the top of inactive volcano. He took part in community service spreading straw on a horse path to protect the grass, and also learnt how to bake. There were 5 tribes of about 18 nationalities and Alemão made lots of new friends, learning new games to bring back to Brazil. One of the problems of the camp was there were no showers and few were willing to adventure in to the water of 3oC. The campsite was beautiful with vegetation composed of moss and a little grass. They did manage to find a hot spring when they visited Landmannalaugar. Kim went on the Vestmannaeyjar Expedition on an island in the south of Iceland The first day the wind was so strong it was difficult to set up the tents and several broke, but in the end everyone had a place to sleep and in the following days the wind dropped. They visited the most uninhabited part of the island which was beautiful , later visiting a small town and on one of the mornings did community service, putting fertilizer on a very steep hill to help the grass grow. In the afternoon we went to the local port where they had activities involving life saving at sea. In the evening, nine tribes came together for an enormous campfire, singing songs from each of the countries On the last day, we climbed to the top of a volcano where you could feel the hot air coming from a hole in the earth. On the last night there was a pool party in a public swimming pool. On the 29th all the participants got together in Ulflotsvatn for the second half of the Moot which was a great integration with nonstop activities and parties. The various villages offered activities on technology and the environment, art and other manual works. Giant Village was, in the opinion of the majority, the greatest fun with inflatable castles, and lots of activities.

Sร O PAULO GARDEN CLUB On the last day, after taking down the tents there was the closing ceremony. No one wanted to leave and bid adieu to our new international friends. An unforgettable experience in a beautiful and mysterious land. Carajรกs was present once again and ready for the next Moot in Ireland in 2021. GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING

A PURPOSEFUL LIFE OUR PRIME PURPOSE IN LIFE IS TO HELP OTHERS (THE DALAI LAMA) The ability to be kind in the day-to-day tasks of living and working goes a long way towards making our lives more meaningful, and, as a result, making us into happier individuals. Each of us has a circle of people-in our families, in our communities and at work-whose lives can be improved by some simple gestures of helpfulness or kindness. Having a helpful and purposeful identity requires self-reflection and self-knowledge, both of which make us more aware of the impact we might have on others. Each one of us has different strengths, talents, insights and experiences that shape who we are. Kindness involves using our best qualities for the benefit of others without the need for martyrdom or self-sacrifice. In fact, it is kinder to help individuals build up their own identities, rather than eroding their sense of autonomy or dignity by assuming we know what’s best for them. We don’t. People living a purposeful life have a solid grasp of their identities and know their own core values and life goals, and respect the different identities of others. They also

know how their families, groups and communities have shaped these identities. And yet identity isn’t static. At every stage of life we must actively re-visit these questions in order to align our maturing values and skills with our ever-changing environment. Therefore, as we come to the end of yet another year, this is a good time for us to re-visit our priorities (as many American families do around the Thanksgiving table), and hope that 2018 will be a purposeful year for all of us. Living with purpose is also the secret to authentic happiness. On that note, let me wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! WORK OUT! As we get into the warm season, the time is ripe to renew our message on the benefits of exercise. A Canadian study, just published online in The Lancet on September 21, shows that higher rates of physical activity, whether recreational or nonrecreational are associated with a lower risk of death and cardiovascular events in individuals from all regions of the world. The study involved 130,843 individuals without cardiovascular disease from 17 countries, with a follow-up of almost 7 years. Most of the studies about the role of physical activity in preventing death from cardiovascular disease come from high-income countries, involving recreational or leisure time physical activity. In low-income, and middle-income countries, however, physical activity is predominantly from nonrecreational activities, such as transportation, occupation, and housework. The results of the study show that meeting physical activity guidelines, or the equivalent of 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 days a week, has a substantial benefit in lowering mortality, and higher physical activity is associated with even lower risks. Whereas other cardiovascular disease interventions, such as generic drugs, and fruit and vegetable consumption may be beyond the reach of many people in low and middle-income countries, physical activity is a low-cost approach to prevent cardiovascular disease. There is also the additional bene-

fit of lowering the risk of diabetes and cancer in physically active individuals. In another study from Indiana University, 97,230 women were followed up for 20 years. Physical activity was assessed biennially through questionnaires to study associations between coronary heart disease risk and frequency, type , and volume of activity. Women reporting moderate physical activity (such as brisk walking) had a 33% lower risk of coronary heart disease compared with women reporting no physical activity. Finally, in another study from Australia, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that physical inactivity ranks higher than smoking, obesity, or high blood pressure among the causes of heart disease in Australian women over 30. The evidence, therefore, points to several benefits from regular physical activity. A cautionary note, however, for outdoor activities in the summer months. Remember to use protection against sunlight exposure, and to drink plenty of water. Individuals affected by heart, lung, bone or joint conditions are advised to seek professional advice before beginning a physical activity routine. ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL

Mozart’s Requiem - St. Paul’s School Choral Society & Orchestra The school’s Choral Society performed Mozart’s wonderful Requiem at the beautiful Mosteiro de São Bento in the city centre. It was the first time that the choir had performed outside the school, and we were absolutely delighted to perform to a huge and highly appreciative audience who rewarded us with a standing ovation at the end. Mozart’s Requiem had been a significant but highly enjoyable challenge for the choir and we were delighted to perform with the excellent support of a number of fine musicians, including friends from the Theatro Municipal orchestra and soloists from USP, both institutions with which our Director of Music has enjoyed a close association. Our own Miss Lima was one of the excellent soloists and we were joined by several other members of staff, parents, pupils and friends of the school in the choir. The St. Paul’s School Choral Society is an amateur choir which comprises pupils, staff, parents, former pupils, parents of former pupils and friends of the school. It meets each Friday from 3.45 - 5 pm at the school with the aim of having fun and making music together. New members are always welcome and we will start preparing for our Christmas Carol service this Friday in time for the performance on 12th December at 7 pm. Do please contact Mr Ward if you would like to join the choir (lw@stpauls.br). Mr Lee Ward Director of Music
