The British Society has a dedicated team of welfare professionals who focus on assisting community members in their own homes as well as supporting members who reside in residential homes. An important change relating to the care of our elderly members took place during March, when the residents who lived at the Lar Elite moved to a new home, Cora Residential in Campo Belo. Details of this change are covered in the article by Alison Steel on page 4. During 2017, many readers requested that we continue with the hard copy of Spotlight. One of the difficulties with this request was the cost of production and delivery. In order to cover these costs , and to liberate these funds which could be used for

welfare , we decided to make an appeal to all who receive the magazine to contribute R100,00 for a year´s supply of Spotlight. This amount would fully cover the costs. To date, the response has been very disappointing , and well below our expectations. We recognize that the first quarter of the year is difficult, with people travelling , holidays and the recent problems with delivery of Spotlight, where many did not receive our magazine at all. It seems that the situation has improved and we hope that this edition reaches you all on time. In our previous Spotlights, we made the appeal for this contribution of R$100,00 , mentioned above, and included an individual payment slip identifying each reader with a centavo addition. We are repeating the request in this issue. and hope you will contribute to help us help others. Please ignore this if you have made a contribution.. The Fundação Britânica de Beneficência is awarded the Silver Salver by the City Council of São Paulo On the evening of February 19, 2018 the Fundação Britânica de Beneficência was awarded the Silver Salver at a Formal Sitting of the São Paulo City Council. This honour was awarded by the initiative of City Councillor Atílio Francisco, whose legislative endeavours are highlighted by sharing with us his concern for the cause of the elderly and in recognition of our 70 years working in this field to the benefit of the city. The Silver Salver is the highest honour awarded by the São Paulo City Council to organisations that render relevant work for the city. For this to occur, a proposal must be made by one or more city councillors to pay this homage via a draft legislative decree and that this project be approved by the majority of the “paulistano” parliamentarians. In our case, the proposal was made by City Councillor Atílio Francisco and approved by his peers on December 2017, in accordance with Legislative Decree nº 55/2017. For City Councillor Atílio Francisco, the recognition given to the Fundação that cares for the welfare of so many elderly people is more than deserved. “This organisation has been present in São Paulo since 1947 rendering social services. It carries out several very important programs for elderly people. When we became aware of this work and the manner in which the Foundation invests in the elderly, we decided to present this award. I am certain that, as of today, the Fundação will grow even more with this recognition conferred by the City Council.” At the same City Council Formal Sitting, Gertrude Vigar, a British citizen aged 106, assisted

by us, who has lived in São Paulo since she was 45, received the title of Paulistana Citizen, also at the initiative of City Councillor Atílio. Damaris Vigar, her daughter, who represented her at the Session, thanked the Council for this honour and committed herself to transmitting this affection demonstrated by all to her mother who is an example and inspiration for all of us at Fundação Britânica. Rachel Govier, our Vice President, took the opportunity to speak a little about our relationship with her. “Gertie lives in a long-term care home. We are giving her full support. We give her the loving care necessary to live her life, and affording her the necessary dignity. There she can enjoy her afternoon tea as a good English lady (laughter). She has her tea, carries on a conversation and likes to receive people to chat. And she still gets up, walks around, and has a good social life.” If you want to see the full speeches, visit our blog: https://fundacaobritanica.org.br/blog/

This castle, built by Zé dos Montes (85) is located in the town of Sítio Novo, 100km from Natal, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The castle is administered by his son, Joseildo who explains that the whole construction was inspired by European and Arabic influence. This unfinished building sits on top of a rock, with many stone altars inside, and a curious outdoor earth and mud labyrinth which represents the Via Crucis . The whole project started off with José Antonio Barreto, who, in 1941, as a child, had a vision of a lady asking him to build seven churches. This apparition repeated itself 12 more times. Eventually,as an adult,he found the exact place where he then had his castle built.

Calçada do Lorena is located in the Parque Estadual Serra do Mar and was the first road built in 1792, connecting the capital of São Paulo to the seaside. In September 1822, Prince Dom Pedro I rode along it on horseback on his visit to São Paulo to declare the independence of Brazil from Portugal. It is 50 km long, paved with rocks, chiseled manually, which are still usable after almost one century. ROUND TABLE ROUND TABLE NO1 AND CLUB 41 BRAZIL Following on from my last article about the Round Table I would like to update you about our recent activity and one future event.

9

We held our traditional social event which is the Curry Night on the 24th March. The Curry Night was organised by the Round Table and it was a great team effort that enabled us to make this event a success. On the day, along with myself we had 2 great chefs in the kitchen – David Gilman and Michael Lofthouse who really helped to make the curry night special. We managed to produce 3 different curries (Beef Rogan Ghosht, Thai green curry with chicken and a lentil Dahl) along with some starters (barbecued chicken Satay and prawn crackers),indian style pilau rice, fresh naan bread, a Raita, 2 types of chutney and a lime pickle.

Some photographs taken on the night.

We had an excellent turnout on the night and we managed to recruit a couple of new members for the Round Table. The curry night as usual was very much enjoyed by all and it was suggested that we consider organizing a couple of curry nights a year! Here in Sao Paulo for more than 60 yearsthe ROUND

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING i ADVERTS

WHY COUNSELLING? I am often asked to explain why people come to counselling. Is it for advice? No. Is it to solve an existential problem? Is it a kind of confession? No, no and no!! The aim of counseling is to help clients discuss their own feelings, values and ideas so as to make their own decisions in a safe, unbiased and neutral environment. Unless anger can be expressed, disappointments felt, anxieties unpicked and problems addressed without judgment, we tend to get stuck on the treadmill of other people’s expectations. There should never be a stigma attached to seeking help (although, alas, there often is) because we all face difficult life-changes or decisions at different stages of our lives. Coaching (my other “hat”) is mostly for people who want help with English, but this usually overlaps with counselling as I don’t “do homework” for students, but instead try to help them think for themselves. Some adult students also want to discuss personal issues in English (“combinando o útil com o agradável”). Others need English for professional or academic reasons, but also want to re-think their career choices. The bonus, for me, is that every individual is unique, so I never get bored. However, some people in the British Society are facing financial difficulties, which is why I am prepared to work on a pro-bono basis with those in genuine need (but still within the boundaries of time, space and confidentiality). Yet counselling doesn’t work unless the client is prepared to give something in return. My suggestion, therefore, is that they give a donation within their means directly to the British Society. THE REAL STORY OF KING ARTHUR

Now I will describe what happened in detail, with more dates. Caerleon was the largest, most powerful and richest of the 4 major cities in Roman Britain. It had a permanently stationed legion (Legio II Augusta) that was based there for more than 300 years from 75 A.D. until 382 A.D., when Caerleon’s governor, who was a Spaniard named Magnus Maximus, proclaimed himself as Western Roman Emperor and then withdrew the bulk of the legion in order to defeat the incumbent Gratianus in Gaul (present-day France). The other 3 major Roman cities in Britain were York, Chester and London (London did not have its own dedicated legion but a powerful navy instead). The next governor in Caerleon quickly brought the skeleton force that remained there up to full strength with retired officers and local recruits. The new legion proved itself to be a powerful army exactly 100 years later (see below). Caerleon was also the main centre of pilgrimage in Roman Britain from 313 A.D. onwards until 700 A.D. Constantine had decreed with his Edict of Milan in 313 A.D. that the Christian religion could be practised freely throughout the empire; thereby ending the persecution of Christians which Diocletian had begun in 304 A.D.(Diocletian committed suicide in 308 A.D. but the persecution continued unabated nevertheless). It was during the first year of this persecution that two inhabitants of Caerleon, namely Saint Aaron (a Welshman and honorary Roman citizen who had been baptized with this biblical name when an adult) and Saint Julius (a Roman by birth with this typically Latin name) were beheaded in Caerleon’s amphitheatre in 304 A.D. Incidentally, a Roman soldier called Saint Alban was beheaded in the same year and for the same reason in another amphitheatre north of London; after which the small local town was renamed in his memory. The Christian citizens of Roman Caerleon immediately

reorganized themselves following Constantine’s decree and they built the Cathedral of Saint Aaron with a monastery attached to it, as well as the Basilica Madre (‘mother church’) of Saint Julius with its associated convent as soon as possible, in order to house the shrines containing the mortal remains of Saint Aaron and Saint Julius respectively. I estimate as an architect that it took them between 5 and 10 years to build these two churches in brickwork or stone masonry, i.e., they had both been consecrated by roughly 325 A.D. Caerleonwas already a very prosperous capital city due to its exports of tin products and other merchandise before its wealth increased considerably. This was due to generous donations from the constant streams of pilgrims ,to such an extent that one Welsh text referred to the roofs of these two holy buildings as being gilded! Let’s jump forward in time by two entire centuries to 526 A.D. Saint Gildas, who was a prominent priest in Caerleon, delivered a superbly eloquent Latin sermon that he entitled ‘De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae’ meaning the ‘Ruin(ation) and Conquest of Britain’ in Saint Aaron’s Cathedral, in which he criticized the deteriorating social situation - including some corrupt clergy and bickering petty kings, among others - and he especially targeted Caerleon’s vicious and inept governor of his time, namely Aurelius, by calling him “the lion’s whelp”, which was a sarcastic jibe and a comparative reference to his grandfather Ambrosius Aurelianus, whom Gildas also described admiringly as “the Last of the Romans”. Ambrosius was the great governor who had led the reconstituted legion from Caerleon to Mons Badonicus (Cadbury Hill, which is 2 miles from the present village of Sparkford in central Somerset) to fight a Saxon army which was besieging that strategic fortress and the town within its walls. Ambrosius won the battle and his cavalry contributed greatly to routing the Saxons: they did not return for another 55 years! That momentous event happened in 482 A.D., which was the same year as when Saint Gildas was born, as he actually

THE REAL STORY OF KING ARTHUR mentions in his sermon. He also says meticulously that “I am composing this sermon in the 44th year of my life with one month now expired”. Well then, Saint Gildas’ sermon incensed Aurelius so much that this evil governor decided to execute him for treason. Gildas was saved by the Archnbishop of Caerleon and Wales, namely Saint Dubricius, who immediately sent him on a spurious mission to Ireland, where the Christian faith was apparently flagging following Saint Patrick’s evangelization of the Irish. Incidentally, the record about Saint Patrick needs to be set straight at this juncture. He was a Welshman not an Irishman and he spent most of his life converting the Irish to Christianity from the age of about 30 until he died there in 493 A.D. when he was 92.The so-called Irish Annals state that “the relics of Saint Patrick were placed sixty years after his death in a shrine by Colum Cille” in 553 A.D. (Cille was an Irish abbot from County Derry, who is reputed to have evangelized the Scots). Unfortunately, the location of that shrine, which was probably built within a church, is unknown nowadays. Although Saint Patrick died in his own church, which was a former barn that his first important convert, King Dichu , gave to him as his religious base, he was buried “where the oxen pulling the cart carrying his body shall stop” on the top of Dun Lethglaise, which was a Celtic fort on the presently called Hill of Down, near a town that was then named after him as Dun Padraig (‘Patrick’s stronghold’) in the Irish language and it is now known as Downpatrick. “Patrick”, as the world knows him, was a Romano-Briton who was born with the name of Maewen Suchat in 401 A.D. (his parents had married in the previous year). He was the eldest son of a prominent civil and military leader called Calpurnius, who was the head of the family (paterfamilias in Latin) at his villa called Banna Venta

Burniae, which means “meeting place of the Burniae (a Welsh sub-tribe) near the bluff” in the north of present-day Glamorgan. (The Latin word ‘villa’ referred a mansion with its own agricultural estate and a dependent village in the vicinity). The town that developed from the village over the centuries is called Banwen nowadays and the feast day of Saint Padraig (he was renamed when converting to Christianity as an adult at the age of about 22) is still celebrated there every year. Sadly, the remains of his family home have never been found, which could be due to the fact that the land around Banwen was churned up during the industrial revolution when it became a centre of the Welsh iron and coal industry. However, I believe that the villa was located quite a long way from the present town: that is to say, very “near the bluff”. That theory remains to be proved of course. Only two of Patrick’s numerous letters have survived and both of them were written in Latin. Therefore, Patrick always referred to himself as Patricius in them. These letters are theauto-biographical ‘Declaration’ (Confessio in Latin)- which is enthralling to read - and the ‘Letter to the soldiers of Coroticus’ (Epistola in Latin), which is a devastating tirade against Coroticus.Patrick wrote thissecond letter around 450 A.D. after he had already spent many years in Ireland on his Christian mission. Coroticusis the name that Patrick used in Latin for a heathen Irish warlord and cruel landowner who regarded Patrick and his evangelizing activities as undermining his own power.Patrick’s letter chastized him and his soldiers(we would simply call them thugs!) for murdering or enslaving many of the Irish whom Patrick had already converted to Christianity and he demanded their liberty. Whether Coroticus heeded Patrick’s advice is unknown but highly unlikely!By the way, Patrick’s command of the Latin language was far inferior to that of Saint Gildas. To be continued

SPOTLIGHT HUMOUR

Cricket Incredible said the other alien, what happens next? Two aliens were visiting Earth to research local customs. They split up so that they could learn more in the time allowed, and one came across a game of cricket, but mistook it for a strange religious ceremony. Afterwards he met up with his fellow alien and described what he had seen. I went to a large green field shaped like a meteorite crate. Around the edges several hundred worshippers gathered. Two priests walk to the centre of the field to a rectangular area and hammer six spears into the ground, three at each end. Then eleven more priests walk out clad in white robes. Then two high priests wielding clubs walk to the centre and one of the priests starts throwing a red orb at the ones with the clubs

Golf Two friends were recounting their most recent dreams.I dreamed i was on holiday said one, and I was playing golf in this beautiful setting. The sun was shining and the birds singing and the waves were lapping on the nearby beach. It was idyllic. What a golf course, What a dream. I had a great dream too recalled the other. I dreamed I was on a date with two gorgeous women and having the time of my life. Hey cried his friend, you dreamed you were with two gorgeous women and you did not call me. I did , but your wife said you had gone off to play golf.

CARAJAS SCOUTS THE CARAJÁS FIELD DAY Carajás held their first Group Activity on Sunday the 4th March in the beautiful setting of Piracaia, São Paulo. It was an excellent day with over 150 people present, including Cubs, Scouts, Scoutas, Rovers, Leaders, Old Carajás and Family Members. An amazing energy was complemented by the superb weather, raising the scout spirit even more. The day was full of activities for all members, including the parents, with our traditional Going-Up ceremony, when the older Scouts/Scoutas move on to the Rovers and the older Cubs pass on to the Scouts/Scoutas for new and more adventurous ex-

periences within Scouting. On this occasion, we also held our AGM which was very well attended, as well as a very special guest: Hugo Vidal from Operation Pineapple – a trip to Alaska in a Jeep in 1955 to participate in the World Jamboree in Canada. Obviously, I cannot fail to mention the enthusiastic involvement of the CaraPais (parents) and their organization of all the food – simply delicious! 2018 has already started at full speed and promises to be another incredible year! Professor Guy Claxton opened the conference by sharing his “Learning Power Approach”, sharing useful strategies for nurturing confident, independent learners. Coaching and positive psychologist Professor Christian van Nieuwerburgh meanwhile reflected on the important role that teachers play as coaches, inspiring pupils to be the best they can be. Cambridge lecturer Dr Nick Baylis reflected on the “science of wellbeing”, and how teachers can help pupils to leverage emotions, both positive and negative, to achieve extraordinary things. Paralympian and diversity champion Claire Harvey MBE rounded off the conference to a standing ovation in an emotional and inspirational keynote on the importance of inclusion in schools.
