EDITORIAL Welcome to our first issue of Spotlight for 2019!
spotlight news bulletin edition
Needless to say, our January issue is traditionally late getting to our readers due to the holidays and the heavy load of Christmas at the printers. Every New Year bring hopes for a better world and it is, with optimism, that I am hoping 2019 will bring us a bit more security, economic growth and an improvement in social welfare. Spotlight continues, but continues under pressure to pay its way. We were disappointed

that less than half our readers supported our appeal last year, but the half that did, kept us alive. In this issue I am not requesting any subscription until I know what the official view of the British Society is on the continuation of the magazine in its present form. I would ask however that those who do NOT wish to receive the hard copy let the office know. Obviously, as Editor, I think Spotlight is important. For any organization to survive you have to communicate with your clients. If you are offering welfare and performing other

Looking back at our last twenty years, we have a full history of all the activities which have taken place. I understand the position, the cost to produce Spotlight, and today social media exists. True. I would argue, however, that the differential between advertising expense. Social media is here to stay but does not stay on the dinner table. THE HISTORY OF DR ALBERT SCHWEITZER The History of Doctor Albert Schweitzer William Moffitt Harris
Part 13 The Albert Schweitzer Hospital Compound during the Nigeria-Biafra War The Nigerian-Biafra War lasted from May 1967 to January 1970, during which coexisted the Republic of Biafra unilaterally declared by a military coup of an ethnic religious nature (not recognized by Nigeria as being so) headed by Lieutenant Colonel Chukumeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. One of the biggest manhunts known after the Second World War was proclaimed and Lt Colonel Ojukwu, the Igbo leader who had declared secession from Nigeria, managed to escape on Jan 5th 1970 to neighboring Ivory Coast where Christian missionaries granted him asylum. A week later, Biafra Chief Army Staff Major General Phillip Effiony surrendered to the Nigerian Government. Colonel Yabuku Gowon accepted Biafra’s unconditional surrender and promised a Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Program envisaging neither victors or vanquished in the hopes of reuniting the three distinct ethnic belligerent groups, the Christian Igbos who predominated in the East and Central Nigeria, the Muslim Hausas from the underdeveloped North and Yorubas from the West, but the then tribal ethnic misunderstanding still kept going on, as nowadays. Gowon himself was of a Christian upbringing and preferred not to interfere with the mass killings. International press agents and social workers sent out many controversial reports as to how many Igbos and their Animist allies died (two to five million) during the seven months siege. During this War Rhena Schweitzer led a relief effort for Biafran Igbo refugee children, having taken almost two
hundred of them into one of the remaining buildings of the hospital premises during the 1963 savagery. There were so many children that she had to remove twenty beds into her own home 300 meters away on the other side of the hill, lodging two of them to each bed. She supervised the elder adolescent children in the care of the babies and smaller kids. Many donations came in from local families in the way of nappies, mattresses and foodstuffs besides villagers coming in to help with the cooking, washing and general cleaning up. Official United States Government Department of State records, mention up to two million Igbos and Animists were eliminated, there remaining less than a quarter million during a siege blockading entrance of food supplies, causing famine and water borne diseases as cholera and typhoid fever. The whole world was shocked by the images shown on television. Biafra government reported that Nigeria was using genocide and hunger to win the war. Many movements led by Catholic and Protestant churches sent foodstuffs by ship, zeppelins and by plane. The plight of the starving Biafrans became a famous issue in foreign countries enabling significant rise in the funding by nongovernmental organizations. Several governments and institutes were forced by public opinion to collaborate in the International help. A Canadian pilot showed the six volunteer pilots taking foods into Biafra and how packages tied together in another bigger sack filled with gas could be dropped from a short height without damaging the cans and packets contained inside. Risking their lives, because Nigerian gunners were savagely devoid of warring ethics, the volunteer pilots saved thousands of lives specially those of children kept in schools, convents and monasteries in towns far from the coast .

2018 Quaich, Mackenzie Trophy and Sassenach Medal The St Andrews Society Golf Team held its annual combined Quaich, Mackenzie Trophy and Sassenach Medal at the São Fernando Golf Club on Tuesday, 20 November 2018. The Quaich has been a traditional match between Scotsmen of “unquestionable” lineage and played uninterrupted since 1934; the Mackenzie Trophy, open to eligible lady golfers is sponsored by Adrian and Debbie Mackenzie; the Sassenach Medal, (a humorous term coined by former captain Brian Fulford), is open to all eligible gentlemen golfers of impeccable pedigree (i.e. “non”- Scots) who have been excluded from disputing the Mackenzie Trophy solely on the basis of gender! Since these three matches are played simultaneously and the outcome known only at the very end of contention, it makes for a very enjoyable if not suspenseful day of fun and golf. After heated competition the 84th Quaich was finally wrested from the hands of the former five time champions Mr. Graham Wallis and Mr. Stuart Duncan by Mr. John McNaughton, a two time former winner and captain of the St Andrews Team with 32 pts. The engraved trophy presented by Mr Stuart Duncan, last year´s winner and a superb golfer in his own right, was filled to the brim with the contents of a bottle of Scotland´s
finest Malt and then passed round from player to player until drained to the last drop. Lady players and the less hearty were offered the option of drinking from crystal tumblers straight or with a dash of water! (See photos). The Mackenzie Trophy, a handsome engraved silver salver, was won by Ms. Elena Sung with a remarkable 39 points! The Sassenach Medal (a mini Quaich) was awarded to South African chiropractor, Dr. Chris Ananiadis, with an impressive 35 pts., longest drive and nearest to the pin to the honorable Stuart Duncan. After the prizes were awarded and dinner served, a special mention was made to the Captain of the Royal British Legion Team, Mr. Crispin Rowe, present, for allowing his members to participate unimpeded and despite applicable gender and tribal barriers! Toasts were made to St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, Robert Burns, Poet Laureate of Scotland (by the Scots), John Keats Poet Laureate of England (by the Sassenachs) and Mary Stuart, the first female golf martyr (by the Lassies). The dates for next year´s 85th Quaich, Mackenzie Trophy and Sassenach Medal will be announced shortly and all are encouraged to take part in these memorable golfing events. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! John F. McNaughton - Captain, St Andrews Team 2018 Photos by Eileen Wallis

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
TIME FOR FITNESS, FRIENDS AND FUN Nothing is more valuable than time. Money can be lost and made again, but time spent (or wasted) can never be reclaimed. Therefore, don’t give your time away too easily. Instead, focus on what is important and/or pleasurable, and ignore the rest. One technique (perhaps the only one I have mastered myself!) is to learn to delegate as much as possible. Instead of asking: “How can I do this task?” try asking: “How can this task get done?” and accept that good enough is good enough. Forget perfectionism!
but the project never got started. Perhaps we could try again in 2019. My suggestion is to meet at “Bread and Co.” in Vila Nova Conceição on Wednesday mornings at 8am and, weather permitting, walk in Ibirapuera Park for about an hour. I need to be home by 9:30, but others can come and go at their own convenience. The idea would be to provide free English conversation for friends (and friends of friends) wanting to improve their language skills whilst also improving the general fitness of us all, native speakers included.
Try to touch paperwork only once. If a task takes less than five or ten minutes—whatever it is—deal with it right then and there. This reduces stress, since it won’t be in the back of your mind, and it is also more efficient, since you won’t have to re-read or re-evaluate the same task(s) again in the future. Also, avoid the “Tyranny of the Urgent” by dealing with important matters before they become urgent. Forget procrastination!
Finally, psychological research has found that starting the day outdoors can result in the rest of the day being happier and more productive. Therefore, a mid-week “Walkie-Talkie” session would be time well spent. Please join me by contacting PenelopeFreeland@gmail.com
This last year has made me aware that I need more time with friends, more exercise and more fresh air. A couple of years ago I offered to host a “Walkie-Talkie” group,

MOVING 2019 There is no doubt about the fact that physical activity is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.
tivity that includes balance training, as well as aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities.
The Department of Health and Human Services in the US has just published an update on guidelines for physical activity for Americans. These guidelines were presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2018.
Benefits of increased physical activity include lower risk of mortality, lower risk of cardiovascular events and associated risk factors (hypertension and diabetes), and lower risk of many cancers, including bladder, breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, lung, and stomach.
For the first time they include recommendations for the youngest group, 3 to 5 years of age, also reviewing the evidence supporting a variety of newly established benefits of physical activity across a variety of populations. On the previous guidelines, aerobic physical activity for adults had to be accumulated in sessions lasting at least 10 minutes. Current evidence shows that the total volume of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity is related to many health benefits; bouts of a prescribed duration are not essential. Sufficient physical activity is defined as at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity and 2 days per week of muscle-strengthening activity for adults, and at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity and 3 days per week of musclestrengthening activity for youths. Preschool-aged children (ages 3-5 years) should be physically active throughout the day to enhance growth and development. Older adults should do physical ac-
Additional improvements are seen in cognition, lower risk for dementia, anxiety and depression, improved bone health, lower risk of falls, and associated injuries. Moving more and sitting less will benefit nearly everyone. Individuals performing the least physical activity benefit most by even modest increases in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The benefits of physical activity on overall health and wellness cannot be overstated. Some physical activity is better than none, and more physical activity is even better. Physical activity has been described as the best buy in public health. Clinicians cannot afford to allow patients to miss out on this inexpensive path to healthier lives. THE BRITISH CEMETERY AT CONGO SOCO I ADVERT
Portugal exercised a complete monopoly over trade with its Colony, Brazil- requiring that all purcheses from, and exports to, be made via Portugal. One very important export item which Potugal obtained from Brazil was gold - at “puchased price”, which greatly enhanced the finances of the country and the monarchy. For at least three hundred years, men in Brazil - conveniently “supported” by slaves - had scraped at surface deposits, panned river gravels and worked shallow excaviations, in the search for gold. The know-how and equipment to pursue gold in depth was not there, and with the gradual exhaustion of readily won suface deposits, the gold mining activity - specially in the Ouro Preto region - virtually ceased towards the end of the 18th Century. Following the decree issued in 1880 by the Portuguese Regent, Dom João, allowing for the opening of Brazilian harbours to commerce of all friendly countries, early in 1824, a Constitutional Decree was issued, introducing the notion of mining concessions. Taking advantage of the above mentioned decree, a British Company was set up in 1824 - known as The
Imperial Brazilian Gold Mining Association, wich subsequently bought from the Barão de Catas Altas, his gold mines- entitled Congo Soco. The Congo Soco mine was operated under the supervision of British engineers and workers from 1826 to 1856, when it was abandoned. Over the abovementioned period, it produced 12,827 kilogrammes of gold. The buildings of the mine, as well as the villages which it encompassed, spread over 1.6 kilometres. At the time, the mine was of such importance that Dom Pedro I visited it in 1831, his presence being honoured by the building of a triumphal arch in the area, wich then marked the entrance to the Estrada Real, joining Sabará to Ouro Preto, passing through Morro Grande, Brumal, Catas Altas do Mato Dentro and Mariana, thus completing the “Círculo de Ouro das Minas Gerais”. A stone walled British cemetery was established in the area time. British labourers were buried there, but alas, ten headstones are the only remnants of the British presence in the area... Unfortunately, the entire area now lies in ruins and sadly, has been negleted. Charles R. Dow
ASSOCIAÇÃO DE AMPARO AOS ANIMAIS Amongst all the series of Books for Dummies, I found Dog Training for Dummies, 3rd. edition, published by Wiley Publishing, Inc., and highly recommend it to anyone who wants or needs to train a dog. It is a complete book and is copyrighted, so I cannot reproduce it, but this is a short paragraph of introduction: “Providing your dog with at least some training is the best and most loving thing you can do for him. Training your dog ensures that he is safe and welcome everywhere he goes and that he is easy to live with. When beginning obedience training, you need to keep in mind a few do’s and don’ts, and you should start with a few basic exercises, including sitting and lying down on command. Training him to respond to the Come and Sit-Stay commands is also extremely helpful. Yes, dog training is based on common sense. However, you do need to keep in mind a few specific guidelines – the do´s and don’t´s to make sure that you are successful and fostering a healthy relationship with your dog. The following sections are here to help you get started.” And there are six pages of the Cheat Sheet Do´s and Don’ts, in detail (remember, this is a book for Dummies like me), with simple directions and common sense explanations. For example: “Don´t give up when the going gets tough, keep trying…and don´t blame the dog, you are his teacher.” And “Do get outside help when you get stuck.” However, the most important, in my view, is “Do spend plenty of time with your dog and give him lots of exercise.” Not everyone is able to do this, for all the reasons we know too well. And everyone who has a dog hopes that somehow he will be a good dog… but he is not a hu-

man, he is a DOG, and needs you to help him to understand what you want him to do… Remember, he doesn´t know what the words mean until you use them consistently enough that he connects the word with the action or consequences. His hearing is acute, shouting and yelling is not necessary or helpful, so try to control yourself and your frustrations, and use a normal tone of voice. Be consistent in your actions and expectations. Further sources of inspiration are the Barbara Woodhouse books, “No Bad Dogs, the Woodhouse Way” and “Dog Training the Woodhouse Way”. (Old, but good!) I close, wishing you all a very happy and healthy Christmas Season, and a happy and satisfying year ahead. Lula May Reed NO WONDER HE WAGS HIS TAIL When God made the earth and sky, the flowers and the trees, He then made all the animals and all the birds and bees. And when His work was finished not one was quite the same.He said “I´ll walk this earth of mine and give each one a name.” And so he traveled land and sea and everywhere He went, a little creature followed Him until its strength was spent. All were named upon the earth and in the sky and sea, The little creature said, “Dear Lord, - there´s not one left for me.” The Father smiled and softly said “I´ve left you to the end, I´ve turned my own name back to front and called you DOG, my friend.” Author unknown. REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE The annual Remembrance Day Service was held on Sunday, November 11th at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral and was attended by over 370 people. This year being the centenary of the end of the First World War, the Royal British Legion offered a special Thank You to all who served, sacrificed and changed our world. Our service was focused on this and the 33 people who participated in this conflict and who are remembered on our memorial plaque at the cathedral. As usual, the Commonwealth countries, whose soldiers, sailors and airmen, travelled great distances from relatively safe home countries, together with those brave volunteers from the community in Brazil who did the same, were well represented at the service along with First World War allies such as France, Belgium and the USA. We remember the sacrifice made by the thousands of British and Commonwealth service people who have died in subsequent conflicts since the First World War including, of course, the Second World War also the allied nations from this conflict including Holland, France, Belgium, Brazil (FEB and FAB) and the USA were also represented at the service.
The musical support this year was from the choir of St Nicholas School and helped us to make the service even more moving.
We had a collection for the poppy appeal and wish to thank everyone who contributed towards the poppy sales either before the service via the schools, the Brazilian British Centre, remotely from other locations or British organisations and at the service on the day.

Adriano S. Baumgartner joined us to talk about the Brazilian Air Force Awards that were presented last year to the family of Captain Gordon Fox Rule, DFC, CdG* (Brazil’s Greatest WW1 Ace, about whom Adriano has published a book) and, this year, to the family of W/Cdr Cosme Lockwood Gomm, DSO, DFC who is remembered on the Second World War memorial plaque at the Cathedral. Adriano has been very involved with both these projects and is working on various others about the RAF including a biography of W/Cdr Cosme Lockwood Gomm, DSO, and DFC. We were joined by the Associação dos Ex-combatentes da FEB along with one of their World War 2 veterans. The President of this association explained a little about what they do.
Following the service we held our traditional reception. It was also very well attended and we had a couple of special events: We organised a special First World War display that was set up for the reception after the Remembrance Day Service. This included personal items connected with some of the people whose names are mentioned on the memorial plaque. One very special item was the 1914 wooden cross of an unknown soldier which has now been donated to the RBL by Bishop Roger Bird.
Before and after the weekend we participated in the French Armistice Service to remember the centenary of the end of the First World War at the Lycée Pasteur on the 9th November and a very poignant Remembrance ceremony and wreath laying at St Pauls School on the 12th November. SKILLS TO THRIVE IN OUR EVER-CHANGING WORLD In modern society, as with any societal change in history, creativity and invention are ubiquitous. As a global society our students are not expected to work in passive, rote, unconnected environments. In the unknown dynamic, interconnected, creative world of tomorrow companies are often looking for creative skills, capacity, and personal agency within their employees. Everyone has within them the ability to be creative and all students should have the opportunity to grow, to utilize and maximize their creativity, developing their critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Creativity is a cognitive process that transforms understanding of the world around us and our relationship with it. We can benefit from, or appreciate, the creativity of others, even if we did not create it ourselves, whether it is through music, product design, the buildings we work in, or computer programming, creativity is all around us. However, with supporting creativity come challenges. In an environment surrounded by stimulation, students often spend time processing new stimuli at the expense of deeper learning. Teachers therefore need to create opportunity for thinking time, for Socratic discourse, that alternative perspectives be considered and understood. Through a rich language environment students at BCB analyze alternate perspectives within their own understanding. In doing so, they display their own thinking, metacognition is promoted, social skills and personal connection through collaborative work and shared understanding is promoted, and emotional intelligence is developed. Skills are required for success beyond the walls of education and for future life.
Our curriculum deliberately includes music, drama, art, and computer science; subjects that traditionally are considered creative by their nature, but this does not mean that creativity is confined within these disciplines. At The British College of Brazil, the school could be considered an ecosystem in which teachers collaborate with each other and students, where learning is approached on an interdisciplinary level. Students are enabled to make connections that lead to important advances and innovation through deep processing, through new ways of thinking, that embraces uncertainty and failure; Edison did not create the light bulb on his first attempt. At BCB students engage in critical thinking in the classroom, replacing the dry lecture style passive format synonymous with the industrial age of education. Our motto ¨Be Ambitious¨ exemplifies this journey into the unknown, where exploring the possible becomes an essential skill. Innovation and creativity are discovery of the achievable. The landscape of tomorrow is unknown. There are no maps or guides at The British College of Brazil, BCB; we are preparing students to become citizens of this emerging world. Students at BCB must remain flexible, open minded, and of course creative. www.britishcollegebrazil. THE ST. PAUL´S FOUNDATION
Frequently, the journey to success is set on a road that, no matter how hard and long it is, presents opportunities. It’s that kind of sense of being at the right place at the right time, finding someone or an environment that allows you to show your potential and prove your abilities.
Four years later, he points to the transformation he underwent during the two-year programme at St. Paul’s. “Everything changed with the school – between me at St. Paul’s and me now at Stanford. Everything is connected through St. Paul’s and because of St. Paul’s I’ve felt a lot more prepared to face whatever comes next”.
For almost a century, St. Paul’s School has been that place for many children in São Paulo. It offers a rich and holistic education through a bicultural and bilingual Anglo-Brazilian curriculum and an approach that values tradition, but is always looking forward. It was the first institution in Latin America to be recognized as a British School Overseas by the British Government and it is one of the few international schools that offers the IB programme. This all places the school in a sharp position as part of this high-quality education network, and immerses the pupils in an environment with top class facilities to prepare them for an exciting life in Brazil and abroad.
Before studying at St. Paul’s, Emiliano was registered in a small private school and had a very different educational routine: he studied under the Brazilian curriculum and had no extra-curricular activities. Plus, he had never lived in a big city. That all changed after being granted the scholarshipand he and his mother decided to move to São Paulo. It’s not difficult to imagine that the change of environment shocked him, and he highlights how surprising it indeed was – but in a different way: “I don’t think I’ve ever been so welcomed: everyone at the school was interested in getting to know me – my peers, the staff. It made me feel like I belonged there.” He’s had an outstanding history as a Lion and now, as a computer science student in a very prestigious American university; he takes this heritage abroad.
A tough social and economic background can be a barrier to many who pursue success through education, and the type of resources mentioned above are rarely available to them. The St. Paul’s Foundation believe that there are gifted children in Brazil with potential that might never be realised through lack of opportunity. Our mission is about opening the doors of St. Paul’s School to these young people. Through a strong Scholarship Programme, we aim to fund a minimum of two scholars per year to complete their education. The past scholars: our heritage above and beyond Former scholars are now living the future they dreamed of when they joined St. Paul’s through the scholarship programme. Emiliano now attends Stanford University, in California, USA. Back in 2014, the 15-year-old boy who lived in Uberlandia, a small town at the countryside of Minas Gerais, applied for the IB entrance scholarship.
The next scholars: younger and driven For the 2020 entry, The St. Paul’s Foundation open its doors to even younger children to apply for the scholarship programme: our scholars will be at least 13 years old and will have a pre-requisite level of academic and English language skills, in addition to a special talent in music, sports or arts. We are looking for excellent students who have the right attitude, drive and commitment to benefit from the opportunities offered by the scholarship programme and to contribute to the school. If you happen to know anyone who meets these criteria and could be a potential candidate, you can let us know by sending an email to contato@fundacaostpauls.org. br. We look forward to hearing from you! St. Paul’s Foundation
