To many, hearing the words ‘Plymouth Argyle’ automatically takes them to a place of professional football on a Saturday afternoon, and a packed out Home Park Stadium. However, to others who may have been directly impacted by Plymouth Argyle’s official charity partner, Argyle Community Trust, they will have a deeper understanding of what the football club truly does throughout its local communities in Devon and Cornwall. Whilst it continues to grow in popularity and recognition, Argyle Community Trust remains one of Plymouth’s best kept secrets.
Trading since 1992, and registered as an official charity in 2007, Argyle Community Trust are the official charitable partner of Plymouth Argyle Football Club. They use the power and unique reach of football, sport, and movement to inspire, engage and help individuals to achieve their full life potential. They use their affiliation with Argyll, alongside a variety of sport and education initiatives, to support individuals from all populations and try to break down potential barriers to engagement. Whether that be poor health and well-being, low levels of education attainment, experiencing high deprivation or unemployment, or a disability, they try to deliver weekly sessions to level the playing field. Their overall aim is to help to build and sustain stronger, more resilient communities.
£1 could fund a healthy and nutritious meal for a child in need
£10 helps us provide sessions to support the elderly through bereavement or our wonderful armed forces veterans
£5 allows a child with a disability to attend a holiday course
5 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
The charity is a visions and values-led organisation, operating within a set of strategic aims (Empowering People, Inspiring Supporters, Promoting Physical Participation, Understanding and Measuring Impact and Improving Our Systems and Structures). Whilst sport and movement are at the heart of their local delivery, neither is used in isolation. Instead, the power of the football club, and the diverse output, is used to engage, educate, and inspire participants from all walks of life.
The charity covers over 3000-squared miles and supports communities from the Isles of Scilly, Penzance, all the way across to South Hams and Torbay. They have regional offices in Camborne, Launceston, Bodmin and three in Plymouth and deliver sport, education and well-being sessions to local people who often find accessing opportunities problematic. With over 90 full-time staff, and a team of 100 sessional coaches, there are very few local neighbourhoods where this charity isn’t driving positive change.
6 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
Whilst of course they have a staff department full of sports coaches who delivers a range of PE sessions, holiday camps, after-school clubs, and holiday hunger programmes, they are incredibly passionate about celebrating the broader range of work that their skilled staff team undertakes. A typical week will see Argyle Community Trust deliver a range of bereavement and dementia cafes, veterans support, mental health interventions, youth mentoring, work readiness courses, food aid and fuel poverty outreach and a wealth of sessions for people with disabilities.
Dwain Morgan (Head of Business and Impact) shared “I’ve been working for the charity for over 10 years now and the change in what we do daily is remarkable. Whilst we are very fortunate to have Argyle as a partner, we are always keen to celebrate how much more we do than just sport. The fact that we now deliver over 170 different sessions a week, for people from all walks of life is both incredibly rewarding, however, so scary that it is actually needed. We focus much of our work in local communities that we know experience the greatest level of deprivation. We pride ourselves on delivering sessions that are low or no cost, and that are themed around growing people’s confidence, resilience, and overall feeling of self-worth. We are passionate about getting people both community and work-ready through supporting their personal development through having fun and meeting new people. If they’re enjoy talking about sport, well that’s a bonus!”

Argyle Community Trust’s shift away from being a sport-orientated organisation to a health, wellbeing and community development charity is further reinforced by their commitment to helping drive down food and fuel poverty, and social isolation through their latest initiative, Project 35. Project 35, in partnership with Ginster is a landmark social action initiative aimed at reducing poverty through a comprehensive campaign of fundraising, awareness raising, social outreach, food donations, education, and charity support.
The Project’s titular number, 35, represents the percentage of children in Plymouth reported to be living in poverty in some wards of the city, according to the most recent (2019) pre-pandemic data. For Argyle Community Trust, Project 35 is not just about raising
awareness though. It is also about taking action. By partnering with Ginsters - a nationally renowned food business who share Argyle’s community-focused values, they use the power of all things Argyle to deliver a large-scale social impact campaign to support those who are experiencing food insecurity.
Last year, Argyle Community Trust supported nearly 70,000 different local community members and delivered over 50,000 hours of community sessions. This year, they are ambitiously targeting a 25% increase in their output as a direct response to the cost-of-living crisis. Whilst they remain somewhat in the media shadow of their parent club, Plymouth Argyle, they are continuing to grow their local recognition through responding to some of the South West’s most prominent local issues.

Visit South Devon Champions Sustainability and Green Tourism
Visit South Devon is a Community Interest Company promoting the South Hams, West Devon, Teignbridge and East and Mid Devon areas. We are committed to becoming an ambassador for sustainability in the area and promoting green tourism for those looking to visit the region. We want to champion good sustainable tourism practices throughout South Devon and aim to support other businesses in the areas that we cover in making changes to become more environmentally friendly and reduce climate change.
Firstly, it might be good to decipher what sustainability and green tourism actually means. We hear the word ’sustainable’ throughout society, it’s thrown around on TV, in the newspapers and all over social media, but what does it actually mean? In the simplest of terms, it relates to the ability of us all co-existing on the planet for a long time. It refers to fulfilling the needs of the current generation without compromising the needs of future generations, whilst ensuring a healthy balance of economic growth, environmental care and social well-being. Green Tourism (or Ecotourism, as it is also known) relates specifically to the travel and tourism industry, involving responsible travel and providing environmentally-friendly tourist activities and services, such as accommodation, restaurants, retail and attractions.
SO, WHAT ARE WE DOING TO CHAMPION SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN TOURISM?
As a company, we’ve pledged to undertake a consumer marketing campaign to highlight sustainability as a key booking factor. Compared to our other campaigns which will only run for a couple of months or so, we’ve ingrained this into our year-long content plan and aim to continue it in the years to come. We have an area on our website dedicated to sustainability where we promote good, eco-friendly practices that consumers can undertake, such as using reusable water bottles and coffee cups, shopping local and independent, and embarking on a car-free holiday. As well as this, we support our members and businesses in finding local suppliers who can help reduce their single-use plastics as well as lower their carbon footprint through less air-miles.
10 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN

We’ve also joined the Green Business Tourism Scheme where we have been awarded a bronze award and are working towards achieving silver this year. We ensure that the benefits of this scheme are passed over to our members and partners and support them in joining the scheme directly. Visit South Devon have partnered with local transport and group travel providers to help promote sustainable travel across the region, as well as highlighting our many wonderful cycling and walking routes.
11 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
Reducing the amount that we print has also been a key factor in becoming a more sustainable company, in fact, our visitor guide has been paper-free and completely digital for a couple of years now. We have given our consumers the option to download our guide so they can access it whenever they’re out and about, even if they’re in the middle of Dartmoor with little to no signal! This year, within our guide we have created a number of graphics with some helpful sustainability tips and tricks to show our readers just how easy it can be to make the switch to becoming more environmentally friendly and reducing their plastic usage.
This year we’re also hoping to work with some local environmental charities to take a more hands-on approach. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a little while, but we were inspired to really push it forward when we took part in a beach clean in February hosted by The Devon Concierge Club at
Slapton Sands. This event was in collaboration with The 2 Minute Foundation whose aim is to see a world without plastic litter and pollution with an ethos that simple acts can lead to a big difference. We were joined by a number of fantastic local businesses as well as families and collectively we gathered a huge 47kg of rubbish! Initially we thought there wouldn’t be much to pick up as the beach looked fairly clean, but it’s not until you start looking for rubbish and plastic that you realise that there’s so many small pieces hidden in the sand and shrubbery. After the beach clean we were invited to take part in a corporate responsibility workshop with The 2 Minute Foundation where we discussed things we can all do in our personal and work lives to reduce our plastic usage. It was a fantastic day out and really inspired us to reflect on our own practices to determine if we could all be doing more.
12 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
Perhaps you’re wondering ‘what changes can I make to become a more sustainable business?’ Well, there’s a number of small things you can undertake that will make a big difference! If you’re a café or take away, reward your customers with a small discount if they bring their own reusable cup. Highlight the fact that you can refill water bottles for free – some people still feel awkward popping into a coffee shop to ask to refill their bottles if they aren’t buying something! Switch your light bulbs for more energy efficient ones, this can also save you money in the long run. If you need new tech, such as card machines or tills, have a look at purchasing refurbished items. Stationary such as pens or notebooks can be replaced by eco-friendly ones that have been made from recycled plastics or bamboo. Offer paid volunteer days to your employees, it’s a great way to incentivize your staff to take part in beach cleans or tree planting days – plus it benefits your local community. Perhaps you have a small outdoor space at your business? You could even try planting some herbs or veggies which can be used in your business, by the staff or your customers. You could also reduce your carbon footprint by buying into a carbon offset charity. Devon County Council have a number of grants in place to help fund various sustainability projects for businesses and CICs so why not take a look at their website to see if there’s any help you can receive.
You might be interested in learning about the other campaigns that we’re running this year. 2023 is an exciting time as not only is it the Year of the Coast, it’s also the 50th anniversary of the South West Coast Path. Both of these have been intertwined into our content plan, and if you think about it –they also relate to sustainability! Throughout both campaigns we aim to highlight the wonderful coastal communities, attractions, activities, nature reserves and restaurants with South Devon. We’ve also started working closely with our public transport and travel partners this year to promote sustainable travel to our consumers and show that a car-free holiday to South Devon is not only possible, but very much enjoyable!
Our 2023 Visitor Guide will be out very soon; our marketing team have been working very hard behind the scenes to deliver it. So, keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages for the latest info!

LOVE DEVON? LOOK LOCAL
Supporting local helps to boost the local economy by keeping money within the community. By supporting local businesses, you’re helping to create jobs and opportunities for your friends and neighbours. Not only that, but it can also help to reduce your carbon footprint, as locally produced goods often require less transportation and therefore have a lower environmental impact. But the benefits don’t stop there. Shopping locally also allows you to discover unique and highquality products that you won’t find anywhere else. Whether it’s artisanal cheeses, handmade pottery, or bespoke clothing, you can be sure that when you buy from a local business, you’re getting something truly special.
That’s where the Made in Devon scheme comes in - building on these shifts in consumer habits and creating a more obvious ‘Brand Devon’ that can promote the region locally but also further afield. By signing up to joining the scheme, businesses can collectively showcase their locally made products to a wider audience. This not only helps to raise awareness
of these products, it also helps to create a sense of community around them. When you buy a product that’s been Trading Standards checked to be made in Devon, you can be sure that you’re supporting a business that’s deeply rooted in the local area, and that takes pride in its products and its community.
And it’s not just consumers who benefit from the scheme. Local businesses that sign up to Made in Devon can also take advantage of a range of support and resources. This includes marketing and promotion, networking opportunities, and access to training and advice on everything from business planning to sustainability.
Made in Devon is a not-for profit scheme that’s all about supporting businesses and consumers to look local so, if you’re a business owner in Devon, why not sign up to the Made in Devon scheme today?. And if you’re a consumer, why not make a conscious effort to shop locally whenever you can? By doing so, you’ll be doing your bit to support the businesses and communities that make Devon such a special place.

Tappermade Ocean derived skincare and haircare
madeindevon.org.uk
Tappermade incorporates all the things I love to do and have a talent for. I create ocean derived skincare and haircare that I have formulated (I am a chemist). My love of product design and illustration has driven the creation of my brand. Tappermade products evoke the calm I feel when I am in or near the ocean and my customers keep coming back for more because they work so well.
I launched Tappermade in September 2021 and this is also when Made in Devon were beginning their scheme. It seemed like a great idea to have their help and be part of the buy with confidence scheme. I was right! After going through the admin that was needed I had the help of industry experts with lots of experience and they helped me make sure that I had set my business up for success. Now my customers can buy with confidence and I can also sell with confidence.
I am happy creating products in my mini lab at home. Often at the weekends I will take my goodies to local markets to talk to customers and raise awareness of my brand. This year I will be attending the Indie Markets on Exeter Cathedral run by the great team at In Exeter and some of the Bridwell markets too. I hope to meet you there.

Crafted by hand
Nicola Knight, founder of Exe Chocolatemicro batch chocolate bars crafted by hand in a one-woman tiny chocolate factory in Exeter.
My journey with chocolate began with a tourist visit to a cacao plantation in the Caribbean in 2011, and an idea that just wouldn’t go away. During the visit I was able to pluck a cocoa pod from the tree, taste the juicy white pulp that surrounded the cocoa beans and watch how chocolate is made from tree-to-bar. Since then my chocolate journey has taken me to becoming a certified chocolate taster, chocolate educator, and now a selftaught chocolate maker and one of very few bean-tobar makers in Devon.

I make my chocolate in micro-batches of 2kg or less, in my little factory (in the Boatyard Bakery on Exeter’s quayside). The process begins with sourcing fabulous quality cacao. Every origin brings its own unique flavour profile, and great care is taken at every step to nurture and bring out this flavour. I use my experience with chocolate tasting and cacao evaluation to select the beans that offer an outstanding flavour profile.
By partnering with the local community of growers and makers, I am able to pair my chocolate with Devon grown or made inclusions for my ‘Made in Devon’ collaboration range. So far I have Two Drifters Rum, Exe Coffee and Ebb Tides Seaweed and I am looking forward to seeing what exciting pairings I can come up with next!

Tarka Pottery & Ceramics Studio
I started Tarka Pottery back in 2008 when, quite by luck, we moved to a smallholding in North Devon with a small studio which had a kiln. Having taken Pottery A Level at school many years previously, I was delighted to find a home for my family where we could enjoy the fabulous rural coast and countryside alongside redeveloping my love for clay.

I discovered that there was a gap in the market for offering pottery classes and experiences in a fun and interactive way, accessible to all ages and abilities. My ethos is very much to enable everyone to enjoy the feel and discover the possibilities that clay offers. The business has developed and is thriving, offering weekly classes for locals, both adults and children, alongside one-off experiences where customers could book to have a go on a potters wheel as a one-off activity to celebrate a special occasion or bring the family or friends along for a couple of hours of fun.
I am passionate about offering opportunities to everyone and we have a programme of work experience students from our local senior school and over the last 5 years have supported an apprentice every year. On top of that, in the last couple of years, we’ve also provided the chance for our apprentices to complete a qualification in Digital Marketing alongside developing skills in making ceramics, learning the technical aspects of operating a studio, teaching and running a small business - we’ve been so proud to see our previous apprentices set themselves up as makers and teachers, creating a space for themselves to thrive.
The Made in Devon scheme is a perfect partner for us as we are a business that very much serves our local community and we love to buy and support locally owned, independent businesses, it’s always inspiring to see other local small businesses, usually showcasing invaluable specialist skills, and seeing how they contribute to their local communities. Looking local provides invaluable support but I have to admit I shop local for plenty of selfish reasons - it’s so convenient! Especially over the last few years when our lives have moved online, I find it’s so important to get back to real life - nothing beats meeting the maker face-to-face or finding out about their service over a coffee in person. There’s so many amazing businesses in Devon that offer quality, artisan items, made with care, and so many people with specialist skills to take advantage of, I am always in awe of what I discover by staying local and investing in my own community.

Miss Pinks Florist Adding a Touch of Beauty to Every Occasion
MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
Miss Pinks Florist, owned by Claire Dockar, has been serving its customers for the past five years since she bought it and the florist shop itself has been a staple in the community for 30 years. With a dedicated staff of five - Claire, daughter-in-law Hannah, Vicky, Connor and their super delivery driver Tony - Miss Pinks Florist offers a wide range of floral arrangements for all occasions.
Situated just off the Ridgeway car park, the shop has seen many changes in the local area and has been extensively renovated over the last five years. It is truly a community space, where customers and locals come in to order or just to have a chat. Claire says “the sense of community is palpable on the Ridgeway and we appreciate that as part of that community, we are not here just to sell flowerswe listen, share stories and experiences, laugh and commiserate and tentatively offer advice. Most of all, we are here to help out whenever we can.”
Claire has enjoyed very successful careers in business and education and was presented with an Honorary Degree by the Late Prince Philip, as Chair of the Chartered College of Teaching, for services to education. She decided to take a break following the deaths of her father and father-in-law and fate played a part in her now owning Miss Pinks.
“I designed and made the floral tributes for my fatherin-law and was asked by the funeral directors which florist had created them. My husband told them it was me, but that I wasn’t a florist. They said that if I ever fancied a change of career, they would be really interested! I was at a point where I felt I had given my all to education services, and would love to give my creative side some free rein, so we googled florists for sale in Plymouth … and here we are!”
Claire feels very lucky to have some amazing local growers to supply some of her flowers and she also strives to become more environmentally friendly. Her delivery vans are electric and she drives an electric car. The shop uses kraft paper, raffia and bio-degradable wrappings, wherever possible, offering a huge range of floral gifts that are perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re looking for a birthday gift, a thank you present, or just something to brighten someone’s day, Miss Pinks Florist has got you covered. Their arrangements are always beautifully presented, and the team takes great care in ensuring that each one is tailored to the recipient’s tastes.

One of the key services that Miss Pinks Florist provides is personal wedding arrangements. The team works closely with couples to create bespoke floral arrangements that perfectly match their wedding theme and style. Whether you’re looking for a classic bridal bouquet or something more modern, they can make it happen.
When it comes to arrangements, the team is known for its modern and designer creations. They are always on top of the latest trends and techniques, and are constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with floral design. Claire attended the European Flower School last year, as a member of the British Florist Association, creating the most amazing structures and designs. From minimalist arrangements to bold and colorful centerpieces, Miss Pinks can create anything you can imagine.
For those who want to learn more about floral design, Claire offers demonstrations for local Women’s Institutes and Associations. These demonstrations are a great way to learn more about the art of floral arrangement and to pick up some tips and tricks for creating your own beautiful bouquets or arrangements at home.
In addition to personal arrangements, Miss Pinks Florist also specialises in bespoke funeral tributes. Losing a loved one is never easy, but the team can help make the process a little bit easier by creating beautiful tributes that celebrate your loved one’s life and honours their memory.
Finally, Miss Pinks also provides corporate flowers for businesses, as well as arrangements for schools and churches. No matter what your floral needs are, they will work with you and your brief and can provide the perfect solution.
In conclusion, Miss Pinks Florist is more than just a florist shop - it’s a place where beauty, creativity, and community come together. With their extensive range of services and dedicated team of experts, the team is the perfect choice for anyone looking to add a touch of beauty to their special occasion. So why not pay them a visit and see what they can do for you?

Wrenwood Designs
I was born creative
Wrenwood Designs existed in my mind a long time before I actually started the business. I was born creative; art and music were my first loves and I was a pro musician for more than a decade. I’ve always enjoyed designing and making things, my home is a haven for crafting.
7 years ago I became a single parent to my 3 beautiful children. My youngest was just 2 at the time, and it soon became clear that my music career would have to be put on hold. I threw myself into full time parenting; that creative “itch” was always there though and once my youngest reached school age, I found a job in a well known craft store. I didn’t realise it at the time, but that job was the beginning of my career as I know it now.
After a difficult time in my personal life, a sudden house move and a shock medical diagnosis, I decided that now was the time to start working for myself again. Wrenwood Designs was born just before Covid hit, at the very end of 2019. The business looked quite different back then; I actually started off making macrame wall hangings!
Throughout the lockdowns I rediscovered my love of art, and after extensive research online, I realised there was a way to put my art onto things like tea towels. And so began the long process of learning all about dye sublimation.
My early designs were quite different to those that I produce now. I knew that I wanted everything to be inspired by nature; I grew up on the South Devon coast and love being by the sea. I design everything digitally now, my medical condition (I have Crohn’s disease) can make me feel quite unwell and it can be hard to hold a pencil or paintbrush steady. I use a mixture of Procreate and Affinity Designer to create everything, which actually speeds up the process as I don’t need to digitalise my designs anymore.
I’m extremely proud of the way Wrenwood Designs has developed over the last 18 months. People seem to like what I do, and the business is steadily growing despite my health problems, which do slow me down a lot of the time. I turn 40 this year and I’m finally able to say that I have a career which I’m not just proud of, but excited about. I can’t wait to see what the next few years bring!

So in this edition I am going to share my personal experience of muscle loss. 17. How to Manage Muscle Loss as a Business Woman
Muscle loss or Sarcopenia (the medical term) is one of the least well known symptoms of our PeriMenopause and Menopause Transition.
DID YOU KNOW
- From the age of 39, we lose 1/5lb. of muscle every 12 months. This increases to 1lb. every 12 months from the age of 50!
Although seldom discussed it has serious consequences if not managed. As we lose our Muscular System our overall structure including our bones and joints become weaker and smaller.
Therefore this leaves us vulnerable to weight gain, injury and when combined with Osteoporosis it can lead to broken bones including hip fractures and potential hospitalisation.
DID YOU KNOW
- That 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men suffer bone fractures due to falls!
My Muscle Loss Story
I had an undiagnosed menopause at 40 and as a consequence I was not aware of the impact on my muscles, bones and joints. So overtime I felt an overall ache in my body. But this was not an ache from being in the gym or after a long run but a deep dull ache. The ache around my hips was constant and as I completed each half marathon it just got worse.
Sitting in business meetings became unbearable resulting in me pacing the boardroom apologising for fidgeting. One particular Sunday run become really painful, enough to push me to seek medical advice.
Not quite the diagnosis I could ever have imagined. I was told that my hip joints were close to crumbling combined with muscle loss on my legs and bum. So I was in surgery the following weekend and there started my two year period on crutches. At age 44 I understood the impact of Muscle Loss and Osteoporosis first hand.

What Causes Muscle Loss
The increased rate of our muscle loss is impacted by our oestrogen decline along with the ageing process as we transition from PeriMenopause to PostMenopause. Other factors including our lifestyle and nutrition play a key role in the correct functioning of our Endocrine System. Our Endocrine System and hormones ensure that our metabolism is functioning accurately.
Therefore our lifestyle and nutrition choices will have an impact on our muscle loss. With a poor functioning Endocrine System our body will not have the nutrients it needs to function and repair itself.
How to Manage Muscle Loss
Using my Menopause Resilience System® will help you manage your muscle loss. With the focus on Food, Movement and Snooze so we Feel Stronger as we transition through our PeriMenopause and Menopause.
Meno|Food
• Meals - Eat meals that include whole-foods, fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, high-quality protein, dairy/alternative products, phytoestrogens and healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids.
• Protein - Eat with every meal as it is key for muscle building and body repair. Consider a protein supplement to ensure you eat the required amount.
• Hydrate - Drink at least 2 litres of water or herbal teas to keep hydrated as we are 60% water and our body systems need it to function properly.
• Magnesium & Potassium – Both are important for regulating muscle contraction. A deficiency can cause muscle tension to build up.
Meno|Move
• Movement - My infamous “4 S’s“©
• Strength Training to build lean muscle tissue, bone density and joint structure.
• Steps to build cardio health, leg strength and keep all our systems functioning.
• Stretching to keep our joints supple, muscles flexible and maintain stability.
• Shimmy to “fire up” our systems and release those “happy” hormones.
Meno|Snooze
• Sleep - It’s important to get good quality and quantity of sleep. Ensure you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. This will enable your body to repair itself which includes building muscle.
• Calm - We devote our energy to what’s going on around us, including family, friends, work and the wider world. Therefore it’s important to take time-out to reflect and reconnect with ourselves with a calming activity.

Natural Detoxification Supporting our body’s
I’m Nikki Harris a Nutritional Therapist & I specialise in women’s hormone health ranging from hormonal imbalances such as PMS, PCOS, Endometriosis and women who are going through perimenopause, menopause and beyond.
I also help with gut health, energy, weight loss and stress as everything is interconnected and an imbalance doesn’t just happen in isolation.
It is that time of year many of us reach out to do a “spring clean” or detox looking to shake off the sluggish feeling of winter and get ready to step into spring and feel lighter and a general sense of wellbeing.
Sadly, we live in a world where we are exposed to so many toxins and chemicals that our liver has to work harder to process them to eliminate them safely from our body. However, we can do our best to support our body and mitigate some of the symptoms by choosing to give it what it needs so it can function optimally = you feel so much better as a result.
What can an ‘overloaded’ detoxification system look like:
Symptoms can present as fatigue, headaches, brain fog, constipation, acne, rosacea, eczema, nausea, cravings, mood swings, irritability, bad breath, white coated tongue, weight gain and much more! These may all be signs of potential toxic exposure.
What is a toxin?
A substance that upsets metabolism (chemical changes that occur in our body’s that maintain life) that can result in chronic disease.
What are some of the main sources of toxins?
• The air we breathe
• The beverages we drink
• The food we eat
What are some of the conditions that can be linked to toxin exposure?
• Obesity
• Type 2 Diabetes
• Cancer
• COPD
• Asthma
• Anaemia
• Parkinson disease
• Lupus
• Atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries)
• Hypertension (high blood pressure)
• Chronic kidney disease
• Atopic dermatitis
• Infertility
• Endometriosis

Are there toxins lurking in your beauty routine?
I feel it is necessary to bring awareness that you are forearmed. We all have a choice of what we “put in and on our body” but if you are not already aware of the toxins that may have an affect on you and your body I feel I would like to bring this to your attention.
What are Endocrine or Hormone Disrupting Chemicals (HDCs)?
They are chemicals that interfere with hormone action. They do this by mimicking naturally-occurring hormones or by activating or blocking hormone receptors or hormone production. Phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), and parabens are common chemicals used in many products.
The main targets appear to be the thyroid and adrenal as well as testes and ovaries that seem to be most affected but this is not limited to, as each organ may also be affected.
Recent evidence shows that HDCs may disrupt and alter the number and size of our fat cells reducing basal metabolic rate and changing the regulation of appetite and satiety.
Studies show that phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) may be involved in the onset of endometriosis and may affect fertility.

What are the main sources of detoxification in our body? We expel toxins through the:
• Liver
• Bowel
• Kidney
• Skin
• Lung
Our body needs specific nutrients to be able to remove harmful chemicals and make them water soluble via a process in the liver called phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification, to be excreted safely from the body systems listed above. Making sure we are getting a diverse range of colourful fruits and vegetables and choosing foods that actually nourish us with the nutrients we need is paramount for our detoxification pathways to be working optimally. Some of the nutrient we need are:
• B vitamins - B12, B6, B2, B3
• Folate
• Flavonoids (a type of antioxidant from plant foods)
• Magnesium
• Choline
• Glutathione (potent antioxidant)
• Vitamin C to name a few
So how can we mitigate our toxic load and exposure to these chemicals? I have listed some of my top lifestyle tips to help reduce your toxic load are:
• Gentle exercise daily
• Aim to get a regular massage and sauna
• Take an Epsom salt bath
• Try daily body brushing - upwards towards the heart
• Daily relaxation (mindful meditation, breathwork, yoga, take a walk especially in nature)
• Make getting a good night’s sleep a top priority
• Drink plenty of fresh filtered water daily (1.5 – 2 litres)
• Add fibre to your diet (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, psyllium fibre)
• Add plants to your home & work place; they help to purify the air- if you have pets be aware as some plants can be poisonous
• Buy soy candles with essential oils and avoid synthetic home fragrances
• Buy organic, free range & GMO-free food where possible
• Avoid burnt foods
• Avoid drinking from plastic bottles and food storage (use glass instead)
• Choose natural & non-toxic cosmetics, toiletries & household cleaning products
I also recommend that you buy organic foods where possible, that includes meats/poultry, eggs, wild salmon and organic fruit and vegetables where possible and budget allows, but why should you eat organic?
Certified organic means:
• Organic produce is more phytonutrient dense
• No cross contamination
• No pesticides
• No chemical residue
• Processed and packaged organically
47 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
Finally to close, how fibre can be supportive
Making sure we are getting plenty of fibre from the foods listed below on a daily basis is key. We ideally need to be aiming for >30g of fibre per day. Fibre helps to pull and remove toxins, used up hormones, cholesterol from the body so this is an excellent way to reduce your toxic load by having regular daily bowel movements.
Your stool should be formed and resemble the consistency of peanut butter (sorry!) and loose and runny stools and “rabbit pellets” type of stools are a sign that digestion and gut health is not as optimal as it could be.
Soluble fibre helps to bulk out the stool and make it easier to pass and insoluble fibre are the parts of fruits and vegetables that we cannot digest and this increases the bowel transit time and sweeps the bowel as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract.
Soluble:
Legumes, rice, oat bran, fruits (berries, banana, plum, pear, apple) vegetables (broccoli, squash, beet, carrot, Jerusalem artichoke), and psyllium seed.
Insoluble:
Whole grains, vegetables (green beans, cauliflower, celery, peppers, leeks, greens, onion, cabbage, tomato, courgette) fruit (banana, cherry, melon, peach, avocado) nuts, flax seeds, beans, and lentils.

All the treatments consist of natural therapies and all the medicines are found in nature making Chinese medicine the world’s oldest, safest and most natural system of medical care, a truly holistic form of medicine.
Chinese medicine aims to treat the body as a whole rather than just isolated symptoms. It believes that all ailments and diseases result from imbalance of Yin-Yang (the two opposing but complementary and interconnected forces within the human body) or blockage of Qi (the vital energy needed to maintain well-being).
Healing is achieved by correcting any imbalances and removing any blockages. This process strengthens immune system and promotes harmony within the body, as a result illness can be overcome and good health and quality of life can be restored and enhanced.

SOME TESTIMONIALS (left by patients after treatments):
I came to Dr Tang as I was really suffering with menopausal symptoms, hot flushes etc which in turn interfered with my sleep pattern. After having about 3 sessions with Dr Tang I was free of hot flushes and able to sleep lovely. I also feel more energetic after continuing my treatment. I feel wonderful after so many months of feeling washed out. Highly recommend this treatment!

My experience here with Dr Tang has been amazing and has healed my pains. I cannot recommend Dr Tang enough. The treatment I received has been amazing, so much so that I will attend monthly session in order to remain as healthy as I feel now because of this wonderful healing treatment.
Carriann P.
This has been a fantastic experience for me. I had been suffering from perimenopausal symptoms, irregular/long periods, fatigue, emotional imbalance. I had been told by doctors to have HRT-at 45 years old! I have always trusted the ancient Chinese medicine route, and I have not felt this well for ages! After one acupuncture session with some herbs, my 6-week period stopped. After the second session I slept all afternoon and woke with less worry and anger (my husband agrees!) and now after 4 treatments, I am happy, energetic (even lost a little middle-aged weight!) and my body feels like it works properly again. No need for western medical intervention! I recommend this to anyone (my husband is also having treatment now as he has seen the benefits for me!). Thanks!
Lisa H.
My experience with Tony has been amazing! I have fast reactions to his treatments of acupuncture and tuina massage. I feel the big blockage points that I was not even aware of before being removed and an energy awakening that flows through my whole body. Definitely the best experience I have had ever to deal with pain that I have suffered from for many years. Thank you so much.
Duncan L.
I have to say that I didn’t know what to expect but I am now happy to say it has done wonders for me. I really thought there was nothing that could help my skin condition and now it is so much better. I have also benefited from help with my sleeping and anxiety. I am so much more relaxed and positive. 100% recommend the treatment. Many thanks!

I came to Dr Tang in desperate need of help. I had been suffering with Long COVID symptoms (dizziness, chest pain, palpitations, anxiety and fatigue), which affected mine and my family’s life. With Dr Tang’s treatments and guidance, my life has changed back to normal and my family is happy. I owe so much to him and cannot thank him enough. Whilst here I also mentioned a kidney problem I had been taking medication for for years which had also been impacting my life dramatically. Dr Tang has also amazingly managed to help me come off medication and manage this! I am truly thankful for everything he has done! Thank you Dr Tang!

London born and bred, Singer-Songwriter Malissa Whitehouse has had a whirlwind year since reaching number 6 in Mike Read’s Heritage Charts as a feature vocalist on a cover version of Minnie Riperton’s ‘Lovin You’.
Her first solo single ‘Dear Diary ‘ was released last March with her follow up single ‘Wine and Roses’ in July. This was a huge success worldwide. Playlisted on over 800 radio stations and featuring as Single of the Week in various territories such as Europe and America. This lead to PR and radio interviews worldwide and her own take over show in the US. Malissa is now cohost on the talk show Out Loud with American on air personality DJ Steve Benz the show is now syndicated worldwide on over 40 stations.
Malissa is currently writing material for her first solo album as well as for a number of new breaking artists from shows including The Voice She is also developing scripts and soundtracks for her first live action TV drama.
Malissa’s first break was at 16 after becoming a finalist for Songwriter of the Year in conjunction with Capital Radio and CocaCola. This led to Malissa performing on Channel 4’s cult TV show The Word landing Malissa her first recording deal.
The success of the TV show and appearance along-side TV host Jonathan Ross, opened an introduction to a top industry manager, which led to Malissa becoming lead vocalist of 90’s pop indie band The Morgans where she started to write, record and tour extensively headlining at legendary venues such as the Cavern Club and Subterania, London.

MAGAZINE
Interview Questions
How did you get started, and what has led up to where you are today as an artist?
My first break was at 16 years old when I was a finalist for song writer of the year in conjunction with Capital Radio London and Coca Cola. This led to a debut on Channel 4’s ‘The Word’ after I was invited on to the show by the executive producer to do an access all areas live performance with my band and be interviewed by Katie Pukrick.
Who do you feel has influenced your sound the most?
Growing up in the 80’s I was a massive fan of Madonna. I recently went to see her live show at The Palladium in London and was simply blown away. A huge inspiration. In lockdown I listened through my old album collection of favourite female artists such as ‘Madonna’‘Kate Bush’‘Dido’‘Janet Jackson’, Diana Ross & Sade to name but a few. These sessions really inspired I decided to finally set up my home studio. I have found some of my recent works are very influenced by the 80’s and 90’s. I love radio friendly pop tracks with great hooks and melodies.
What has been your biggest challenge and what do you feel you have learned from it?
I think tenacity has been the key for me. If I stopped after all the No’s I’ve had I would never have made it in this industry. It’s hard as knock backs are challenging for anybody but I’ve always managed to make a negative in to a positive and always gone back even when doors have closed. I also feel that if those answers had been yes at the time then the timing wouldn’t have been right. It’s only when you look back at situations that you realise you have to learn your skill. Working in so many areas of the industry has helped me to progress to the artist I am today.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
My signing to Peer Publishing was a fabulous moment for me. To know that my work was being taken seriously as a songwriter and also the opportunity that I has managed to create with my TV writing too. Pre lock down I filmed my first TV pilot with an array of celebrities which landed me a production development deal for my first TV show. This has been a labour of love but hoping that things will blossom over the coming months with recent discussions.
What advice would you give to anyone new coming into the industry?
Just because someone gives you there advice it doesn’t always mean its the right advice! Surround yourself with positive light- minded people that you can connect with and have freedom with your music expression. Many times I was guided down the wrong roads and ended up going full circle. That still happens today but sometimes its a progression of the project and how things development. As I’ve got wiser with knowledge I think going with your gut reaction is the key.
You’ve been travelling with your music how is your music being received abroad?
I’ve been very blessed to have support in the USA with the last two singles with airplay.
This has given me a great platform to connect with fans across the pond and to visit Nashville, Chicago and LA with my music. I also have a weekly feature as the co- host on a USA Syndicated Talk Show ‘Out Loud’ with on air personality Steve Benz. The show is now syndicated worldwide to over 40 stations and growing. My two first singles ‘Dear Diary’ and ‘Wine and Roses’ were also well received in Europe making single of the week in 12 countries.

Mike works as the detailer, while his fiancée Katy manages the day-to-day operations of the business and assists when needed. They specialise in paint correction and ceramic coatings, and their services cover a wide range of motoring needs, including bodywork, wheel refurbishments, paintless dent removal, and servicing and MOTs for all types of vehicles. Automotive Industry Women in the at Roger Young
The automotive industry is widely known for being a male dominated industry, with roles such as Salesmen and Vehicle Technicians leading the generalisation. However, Roger Young Jaguar Land Rover Isuzu has shown that women play a massive role in the trade.
62 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN
HOSPITALITY RETAIL
In 2020, leading UK Professional Services Firm, Deloitte, found that women represent 20% of the Automotive Industry nationwide. Whereas, at Roger Young, women made up 30% of the workforce in 2020 and continue to do so. This above-average percentage of female workers demonstrates the companies forward-thinking attitudes to the automotive industry.
Hannah, Roger Young’s only female Valeter, has grown up surrounded by cars. In her spare time, Hannah’s passion is restoring vehicles; she is currently restoring a 40-yearold Mark 1 Ford Fiesta. She says” I love that I get to be around cars, my passion, every day and am surrounded by such a great group of people. Roger Young has always
made me feel like an included member of the team, it makes no difference that I’m a female in my role.”
With a third of the workforce being women, Roger Young is showing that the automotive industry does not have to be a male led. With departments being ran purely by women, women in both the valeting and workshop departments and a large female service team, Roger Young has female power running through the core of the business.
However, over the last four years it has taken the entire company to come together, to tackle the difficult economic and environmental challenges that have been thrown its way.
63 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
The automotive industry has been greatly affected over the past few years with the Covid-19 Pandemic and the shortage of semi-conductor chips. But as the industry starts to slowly return to normal, Roger Young has shown that having close connections and bonds with other local businesses can help secure customer relations.
One connection that Roger Young Jaguar Land Rover customers love is that of Land Rover Experience Centre. Land Rover Experience is based just outside Honiton. Working very closely with Land Rover retailers like Roger Young they offer driving experiences in a fleet of brand new Land Rover and Range Rover models. For customers purchasing a new or approved used Land Rover they offer a unique complimentary half day, in which the customers can get to understand the features and benefits of their own vehicle and also drive one of the Land Rover Experience fleet on a 35 acres off road course.
The course enables them to demonstrate the true capability of the vehicles on steep hills, side slopes and through mud and water. The complimentary experience is designed as an extension of the retailer hand over and give the customer the opportunity to ask questions on both the mechanical and tech side of their new vehicle.
As well as the complimentary experiences they also offer “leisure” driving experiences. 1 Hours tasters, Half Days and Full day experiences are all available together with a Heritage experience, which combines a 1952 Series 1 Land Rover with the classic and all new Defender. This event have something for the children. The Young OffRoader drive is designed for 11-17 yrs olds where they get behind the wheel of a Range Rover on the off-road course. They have a suite of conference rooms for the corporate client and also offer professional driving courses for 4x4, ATV and RTV.
64 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
Land Rover Experience employs around 16 staff either on a part-time or full-time basis. The most recent team member to join them is Sian who works full time at the centre. Sian says, “After qualifying as a Land Rover Experience instructor my role is very varied and each day is different. I really enjoy sharing my knowledge of the vehicles with customers and helping them get the most out of their car.”
Since joining the team, Sian has been getting some great feedback from customers:
“The whole experience was a delight, from the arrival, the driving to the review at the end. Sian was brilliant, showed me functions on my car that I wasn’t aware of & showed us just exactly how good the cars are off-road.”
Working on a casual working pattern to fit with her other commitments and young family is Leanne. As a Land Rover owner herself, Leanne joined the team in 2021, quickly picked up the role, and now delivers driving experiences to a range of customers.
Roger Young’s commitment to gender diversity in the automotive industry is evident through its above-average percentage of female employees. By demonstrating that women can excel in various roles, the company serves as a model for other businesses in the industry.

We take pride in employing all our staff locally, and our venue is a popular choice for many charities and community groups.
The journey to opening our first restaurant was not without challenges, including the need to re-wire and re-plumb the entire building, which resulted in costs spiralling to almost double our initial estimates. However, we have learned valuable lessons from these experiences, and we are looking for new commercial units or old restaurants fit for purpose for our next site.
To ensure success, we believe in listening to the local community and offering what they want to see, rather than imposing our own preferences. We also prioritize durability in our equipment and operations to weather difficult times.
We recently launched bottomless brunches and afternoon teas, which have been extremely popular. We are the only ones offering this in Plympton and Ivybridge, and we hope to continue offering new and exciting experiences to our customers.
We understand that running a business can be challenging, and we strive to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Our longer-term goal is to build a sellable asset in the next five years.

‘Finisterre’ Gin Salcombe Distilling Co. Relaunch Limited Edition
Following its popularity when originally released, Salcombe Distilling Co. has produced a further release of its exquisite limited edition cask aged gin ‘Finisterre’. Part of the special Victuallers Edition series, the latest edition of ‘Finisterre’ is available in a 50cl bottle, RRP £50, ABV 46%, from salcombegin.com and the Salcombe Distilling Co. stores in Salcombe and Dartmouth.
Since the last release in 2018, this batch of ‘Finisterre’ has been quietly maturing for three years in its American oak Fino sherry cask during which it has further mellowed and sweetened whilst maintaining its defining characteristic with the salinity from the sherry being more prevalent in the finish.
The result of a collaboration with Bodegas Tradición, one of the most respected sherry houses in Spain which is renowned for producing genre-defining aged wines using traditional and time honoured methods, Finisterre derives its name from a rock-bound peninsula on the West Coast of Spain. This super premium gin reawakens a bygone era of adventure and trade, tracing a famous 19th century trading route of the Salcombe Fruit Schooners from Cadiz to England, passing by this Galician outcrop.
When it first launched, Lorenzo Garcia-Iglesias, general manager of Bodegas Tradición commented: “We share the same passion and dynamism as Salcombe Distilling Co. to only create exceptional produce, so were delighted they selected one of our beautiful casks in which to age their fantastic gin.”
Co-founder of Salcombe Distilling Co. Angus Lugsdin says: “We were honoured to work with the prestigious Bodegas Tradición to create this limited batch of cask aged gin. The fresh citrus notes are tempered through the cask maturation process which takes has taken three years, creating wonderful candied citrus aromas and moreish saline notes from the aged Fino. The result is a sophisticated and elegant gin with great character and depth of flavour.
He continues: “‘Finisterre’ was the result of our curiosity with cask aged gin and we are thrilled with how this extraordinary product is continuing to develop. We were delighted by the response to the first two editions and we hope our latest release is as well received.”

Taste profile
NOSE - Wonderful candied citrus aromas including orange blossom and moreish saline hints from the aged Fino.
Palate - Sweet, dried citrus peel and warm fruit with an underlying dry finish.
FINISH - A sophisticated and elegant gin with great character and depth of flavour whilst the aged Fino adds a further layer of complexity and gentle spice. The dryer salinity of the Fino sherry comes through over previous years.
SERVING SUGGESTION - As with all of Salcombe Distilling Co.’s gins, it’s excellent served on its own over plenty of ice, mixed with premium Indian tonic water or for an exceptional martini married with Fino sherry in place of the more traditional vermouth.
Victuallers Special Edition ‘Finisterre’ Gin joins Salcombe Distilling Co.’s award-winning line-up of Salcombe Gin ‘Start Point’, Salcombe Gin ‘Rosé Sainte Marie’, the Voyager Series, Victuallers Special Edition ‘Snapes Point’ Sloe Gin, Salcombe Rum ‘Island Street’ and New London Light non-alcoholic spirits and aperitifs.

An Estate Agent with a Difference Victoria Bolt
In a world where online marketplaces have become the norm, the role of an estate agent may seem to be becoming increasingly obsolete. However, there are still those who believe that nothing beats the personal touch and expert knowledge of a seasoned professional. Victoria Bolt is one such individual. With over 18 years experience in the industry, Victoria is a highly respected estate agent whose reputation precedes her.
Victoria began her career as a recruitment agent at the age of 21, after completing a degree in hospitality management. At the age of 23, she joined an independent estate agency where she quickly found that she had a natural aptitude for the job. However, after 16 years she set up her own business which is where she found her true calling. Now she has the freedom to work closely with clients, build better relationships and truly get to know the local market.
It was during this time that Victoria developed her unique approach to estate agency. Rather than simply listing properties and waiting for buyers to
come to her, she took an active role in the sales process. She would work closely with clients to understand their needs and preferences, and would then use her extensive knowledge of the local market to find properties that met their criteria. She would also take a hands-on approach to marketing, using her experience and expertise to create compelling listings that highlighted the unique features of each property.
This approach proved to be highly successful, and Victoria quickly built up a loyal client base. Her clients appreciated her honesty, transparency, and willingness to go above and beyond to help them find their dream home. Word of mouth soon spread, and Victoria became known as one of the most reliable and trustworthy estate agents in the area.
82 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
Today, Victoria runs her own agency, which specialises in properties in some of the most desirable areas of the county. Her website, www.victoriabolt.exp.uk.com, showcases some of the stunning properties she has listed, each accompanied by detailed descriptions and high-quality photos. However, despite her success, Victoria remains committed to providing a personalized, boutique service to each and every client.
For Victoria, estate agency is not just a job, but a passion. She is constantly striving to learn more about the market, to keep up with the latest trends and technologies, and to find new ways to provide value to her clients. Her dedication, expertise, and professionalism have made her one of the most sought-after estate agents in the country, and it’s clear that she has a bright future ahead of her.
