hiladelphia was founded on principles of equality and freedom of expression more than 300 years ago. Today, the “City of Brotherly Love” is a welcoming place for people from around the world and a friendly destination for gay and lesbian travelers. Famous as the birthplace of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” the cradle of liberty offers much more than cobblestone streets and historical landmarks. Cultural, culinary, artistic and ethnic treasures abound in this city and its surrounding countryside. Philadelphia is a dynamic city, sunup or sundown. By day, explore four centuries of history and architecture, quaint neighborhoods, remarkable museum collections and endless shopping. When the sun sets, the city heats up with acclaimed performing arts, candlelight tours, delectable dining and thriving nightlife. The heart of historical, business and cultural activity, gay and otherwise, is Center City (the local term for downtown). Compact and easy-to-navigate streets, place the city at your feet - literally. Bring comfortable shoes, because this town is made for walking. Getting to Philadelphia is almost as easy as getting around town once you arrive. What a vibrant city! It’s new skyscrapers, reaching far above William Penn’s hat, atop City Hall, portray a revitalized community. Visit Philadelphia’s art museums, convention center, the Gayborhood / Midtown Village, historical district, go shopping or enjoy entertainment areas. You’ll find an ongoing kaleidoscope of events, happenings and fun.

Greetings...

Welcome...

from the Mayor Welcome to Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection! Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation, is truly a city of firsts. We're proud to be the home of the first organized protests for LGBT civil rights. These early gay rights demonstrations, which became known as "Annual Reminders," first occurred on July 4, 1965 and continued through July 4, 1969. These peaceful protests helped transform a fledgling national campaign into a full civil rights movement. You'll find an historic marker commemorating the demonstrations at 6th and Chestnut Streets, right in the heart of Philadelphia's historic district. Our City, which adopted the principals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness early in its history, has a special way of mixing serious history with warm hospitality, cool culture, and the spice of a great nightlight. You'll enjoy vibrant, urban neighborhoods that offer unrivalled dining experiences, intriguing shopping options and a nine-block area known as the "Gayborhood" that is home to some of our most dynamic retail and restaurant attractions. Whether you're coming to Philadelphia for business or pleasure, be sure to make good use of FunMaps to "Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay." Sincerely,

from the Executive Director Dear Philadelphia Visitors! Please accept my heartfelt welcome to Philadelphia on behalf of the entire LGBT community. Philadelphia is home to one of the country’s most vibrant LGBT communities in every neighborhood. In 1965, one of the first demonstrations of LGBT political power came at the "Annual Reminder" picket line outside of Independence Hall. Some of the nation's first LGBT activists marched in these pickets and bravely started the wave of activism that would lead to the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. We're proud of this history, and we also celebrate the terrific community that resulted in our City. The Community Center serves as the informal LGBT Visitors Center and Concierge Desk, so please stop by at 1315 Spruce Street when you’re in town. Our historic building has local maps, information on restaurants and clubs, information about historical attractions, and someone at the Front Desk who can provide directions or other information. We also offer free wireless access in our lobby, an accessible restroom, and a filtered water fountain! Whether you’re dining or clubbing in our Center City gayborhood, shopping in Mt. Airy, or enjoying a beautiful day in New Hope, I hope you'll come to appreciate the breadth of our gay history, culture, and community. Sincerely,

Chris Bartlett Executive Director, William Way Community Center http://www.waygay.org

ounded in 1805, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is the nation's first museum and school of fine arts. Many of the nation’s most important artists were founders, teachers, or students at the Academy, playing an instrumental role in shaping American art. Much of their work is richly represented in PAFA’s collection including works by Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, Cecilia Beaux, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Maxfield Parrish, and Violet Oakley, together with contemporary artists like Marsden Hartley and Georgia O’Keefe. An added bonus – these treasures are housed in PAFA’s Historic Landmark Building, considered one of America’s finest surviving examples of Victorian Gothic architecture. Noted architects Frank Furness and George Hewitt designed the building, which opened in 1876. The Academy is located just two blocks north of Philadelphia's City Hall and is easily accessible by public transportation.

Venture in and join us for exceptional seasonal food served fresh daily. Enjoy our friendly and relaxing atmosphere with warm neighbors. You'll see why Venture Inn received the 2008 Rainbow Award for best bar! here are several tourist standouts when it comes to food in Philadelphia like Reading Terminal Market, Chinatown, South Street and the Italian Market. However the city is full of excellent eateries in almost every corner of every neighborhood. In the Gayborhood, devour some delicious Latin fare and Cuban Mojitos at Mixto. Venture to Venture Inn and check out the new chef's home-style food. More Than Just Ice Cream serves up comfort food with a desert bar brimming with 32 flavors of ice cream. South Street is home to Jim's Steaks and the South Street Diner (10% coupon pg. 24), staples of the Philly scene. In the Northern Liberties visit the home of the original Philly cheesecake, Darlings’s, or grab contemporary American cuisine at Sonata. Honey’s Sit ‘N Eat will remind you of Grandma’s kitchen. On East Passyunk Avenue, spice things up at Adobe Café, a southwestern grill and steakhouse or enjoy an authentic Italian meal at Maria di Marco’s Mamma Maria’s where hand rolled gnocchi and homemade Limoncello are favorites. There are also many popular nightlife venues that also offer dining. Knock is a standout for lunch, dinner or happy hour with indoor or outdoor seating.

Honey’s is the "everyman" cafe. Come relax. Sit, eat and be comforted by new interpretations of traditional Americana, while we try to take you back to Grandma's kitchen in your heart, mind and stomach.

Darling’s is a City's Best, home of the original Philly cheesecake. Proud to be the Best of Philly 2006. Darling's professes to be 'home of the original Philly cheesecake,' a cheesecake that's lighter in color and creamier in texture than a NY-style cheesecake.

Sonata is a contemporary american BYOB set in the heart of Liberties Walk in Northern Liberties. Serving high-quality, seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. Dishes are presented in modern & imaginative presentations that are approachable, not intimidating.

Mixto is a bi-level, cheerful gayborhood favorite for a mix of Latin American & Caribbean cuisine. The competent and knowledgeable staff from various nations will guide you through their unique menu. Highlights include excellent homemade guacomole, aromatic shrimp ceviche served with excellent homemade plantain chips and corn nuts; flavorful, slow roasted shredded beef with sweet plantains and moist, rich tres leches cake for dessert. Tropical drinks such as mojitos are popular accompaniments. - FunMaps Review

16

Knock is an inviting, clubby environment with warm woods and one of the most popular and friendly bars in town. Start with rich, creamy mac and cheese with tender morsels of lobster throughout. Flat breads are light and tasty. Assorted sliders are sandwiched between uncommonly good buns. Crab cakes are meaty and make sure you try the meltingly tender, aromatic short ribs that fall off the bone. Desserts such as creamy peanut butter mouse pie, authentic key lime pie and flourless chocolate torte are an excellent way to get you in the mood for that perfect after dinner drink at the bar. - FunMaps Review 15

New Hope, PA

Lambertville, NJ

ocated in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, New Hope is a sophisticated little gem of a town nestled along the Delaware River and Canal. To some, New Hope is the place to visit art galleries. To others, it’s a place to spend enchanting romantic weekends, cuddled up by the fire at one of the many beautifully restored inns. New Hope’s natural beauty is always mesmerizing. Here is where you'll find the perfect place to escape the humdrum routine and find a truly magical experience. It’s an easy trip from Philadelphia, New York City and New Jersey. Day trips to New Hope are filled with things to do—ferry rides, visits to historic sites, carriage rides, theater, museums and of course, shopping. New Hope is a shopper’s paradise with over 100 shops offering local crafts and beautiful items from around the world. The streets are few, intersected by quaint alley-ways and side streets, where visitors can wander along the cobblestone walks, and find many nooks and crannies. Throughout the year, many active New Hope associations and groups provide events and during Christmas the town becomes “The Enchanted Christmas Village”, with the glow of white lights and streets lined with candles. Just a few miles from General George Washington’s famed crossing of the Delaware during the American Revolution, this little town is rich in history which lends to its appeal. William Penn owned the original parcel of land that eventually became New Hope. Benjamin Parry began operating two mills here, which were rebuilt after a fire in 1790 and called the “New Hope Mills”. Today, New Hope continues to bring the world a positive “new hope” by preserving its own unique tradition. It’s an experience you cannot find anywhere else.

Greetings... from the Mayor of Asbury Park On behalf of our great city, I extend a warm welcome to members of the LBGTQ community! Asbury Park is a very special place! The roots of the Jersey Shore grow strong here as our city proudly moves forward, building upon our hopes and a vision of a strong, united city which values diversity as one of our principle strengths. Throughout history, Asbury Park has been a destination for summer fun and the winter warmth of our community. We have a unique history, character and charm which attracts people throughout the region, the country and from around the world as place to live, work, shop and play. Our eclectic business community is on the grow. Shops, Restaurants, The Arts Community, Musical Venues, Clubs & Pubs represent the very best at the Jersey Shore. Join us for the day, a weekend or for the season, Asbury Park is the place for you! Come be a part of our exciting renewal as we regain the crown as “The Jewel of The Jersey Shore. A growing city, a proud community and a great time you will always remember. We invite you to join us here, in our City by the Sea, to make history again! Sincerely,

Asbury Park, NJ

Ed Johnson Mayor, Asbury Park

he New Jersey shoreline is known for its many beach towns and vacation spots, from Atlantic City to Cape May, each providing it's own experience and charm. One spot that has recently garnered a lot of attention is Asbury Park. Asbury Park has become one of the best kept secrets of the shore after it fell out of popularity in the later half of the century. Once known as the Duchess of the Jersey Shore for it's ornate victorian homes, long boardwalk, and proximity to New York City (Asbury Park is just a short train ride away), the little beach town served as a playground for the young rich Manhattanites throughout the roaring twenties and into the fifties. Unfortunately, the completion of the Garden State Parkway, the limitations on train use during World War II, and the proliferation of suburbia kept people from going to Asbury Park, and by the mid-nineties, the city had nearly become a ghost town, all but forgotten along the line of coastal towns in New Jersey. Things are more than looking up for Asbury Park these days. With a recent budget approval for 780 million dollars towards renovation, the town is bouncing back with a vengeance. The low-price on classic victorian homes as well as prospects for new business has created a resurgence of energy as gay couples buy up property and restore them to their former glory. Asbury Park offers lesbian volley ball competitions, 4 gay owned and operated bars, gays tanning by the sea in neon hot-shorts, gay owned and operated restaurants lining the boardwalk; It's NJ's answer to Fire Island, a booming gay beach-site with nothing but growth ahead.

Welcome... from the Chamber of Commerce On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Chamber of Commerce, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Asbury Park. The Chamber is as diverse as Asbury Park itself. Our members include restaurants, retail stores and service providers. Asbury Park offers residents and visitors a wide variety of shops, eating experiences and entertainment, both on the boardwalk and downtown. If you have visited Asbury Park before you know that it really is like nowhere else, beautiful beaches, elegant accommodations, incredible restaurants, unique shopping and world-class entertainment. There are activities for all age groups during the week and on weekends as well. Asbury Park is not only a great summer destination, but its neighborhoods and lakes provide a unique experience with the colors of fall, the beauty of winter and the rebirth of spring. Each of the seasons allows for activities as diverse as the community itself. The Asbury Park FunMap is a perfect companion to our Chamber website www.asburyparkchamber.com, the City website www.cityofasburypark.com and the Gay website www.gayasburypark.com each of which identifies the multitude of events occurring in our fair City. We welcome you to join us any time of the year, and look forward to your visit. Very truly yours,

Nighttime sklyline of Atlantic City, NJ - Photo Courtesy of the Atlantic Convention & Visitors Bureau

Atlantic City, NJ tlantic City melds the excitement of its posh and glitzy casinos with the calm of its wide and white ocean beaches. The thrilling combination makes for one of North America’s most unique and exhilarating resort experiences and is only a short distance from Philadelphia and New York along New Jersey’s southern shore. During prohibition Atlantic City’s laissez-faire attitude and penchant for showmanship solidified its place as "America's Playground" that continues today. Although diving-horses and other crowd pleasing spectacles have evolved to modern tastes of headliner entertainment, luxury and outlet shopping, world class spas, celebrity chefs, and guest DJ’s in mega nightclubs offered in the 11 casino resorts. The famous Boardwalk is the 5 plus mile gateway to the free public beach and is lined with shops, amusements and restaurants and is also home to Boardwalk Hall, one of the top mid-sized entertainment venues in the US. With 33 million visitors annually, Atlantic City is still only second to Las Vegas in number of casinos, revenue and size. Just like Vegas, great hotel deals can usually be had for most of the year and many offer luxury amenities and top notch service. Ever evolving, Atlantic City is also on the forefront of the new "Gay" where nightlife blends both "mostly gay" bars and "gay nights" with a plethora of friendly places for all. With the passing of the New Jersey Civil Union law in 2007 many of the resorts have run with the opportunity to accommodate same-sex couples and have also offered "OUT" weekends and events. ‘Atlantic City, Always Turned On’ rings true. Expect “AC” to continue as the east coast's fun, safe and easy 24 hour place to play for gays, lesbians and friends alike.

Whether it’s been a few years or this is your first visit, make sure to experience everything you possibly can. From celebrity chef-owned restaurants, outlet and elite shopping to aweinspiring spas, incredible golf, energetic nightclubs and more, we have it all! Before visiting Atlantic City, you can also check out our award-winning Web site at www.atlanticcitynj.com. Not only will it give you the inside scoop of where to go, who to see, and what to do while in town, but you can also order brochures and a Visitors Guide for the area, check out videos and even download maps for your visit. If you need more ideas about what to see and do while in Atlantic City, stop by a Visitors Information Center, located both on the Atlantic City Expressway at mile marker 3.5 or at Boardwalk Hall at Mississippi Avenue and the Boardwalk. Or call toll free 1-888-ACVISIT (228-4748). The saying goes that ‘the wise man travels to discover himself.’ In Atlantic City we say, why stop there! From craps to crepes, showrooms to sightseeing, golf courses to grape vines, it’s all here for you to experience for the very first time or maybe once again. See what’s waiting for you in an ‘Always Turned On’ Atlantic City! Sincerely,
