A Letter...

Greetings...

from the Executive Director Welcome to New York City, the most vibrant city on earth! I am certain you'll have an unforgettable experience and encourage you to put The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center at the top of your list of must-see destinations. We are located at 208 West 13th Street, and we serve as a lifeline for our community, providing information, resources and support 365 days a year. The Center builds and supports our community through arts and culture, wellness and recovery, family services and lifesaving youth programs designed to foster healthy development for all LGBT people in a safe, affirming environment. Center staff members are here to provide you with information to plan your visit. Stop by the Cyber Center to surf the web and visit us online at www.gaycenter.org where you can find a diverse activity list of LGBT experiences. Since 1983 We've been welcoming over 6,000 people a week, and we look forward to welcoming you. Sincerely,

from the President From its beginnings as a Dutch trading post to its current status as the wealthiest of the North American metropolises, New York has always attracted entrepreneurial and globally-minded individuals. Today LGBT professionals and business owners are key players in providing the services, thought capital and sheer manpower that fuel the city's continued growth and development. As the founding President of NGLCCNY, Metro New York's affiliate of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, I am proud to represent the voices of hundreds of LGBT-owned businesses and fair-minded corporations committed to equality. Join us at our M3: Members' Monthly Mixer, an Industry Council Event or an educational workshop to uncover valuable business development opportunities and meet other successful professionals. NGLCCNY is your Chamber. Whether you are a visitor or resident, I encourage you to participate in our activities and search our Business Directory at www.nglccny.org for whatever product or service you are seeking during your time in our city. By patronizing the establishments in this New York City FunMap and those listed at www.nglccny.org, you are strengthening the LGBT community and furthering Equality for All…one dollar at a time. On behalf of the business members and corporate partners of NGLCCNY, Welcome to New York!

New York City Overview

to Edward J. Ford ©2011 Columbia FunMap® Corp. • 221 Rutgers St., Maplewood, NJ 07040 • 973-275-1700 • www.funmaps.com

Ed Ford was born July 28, 1947, in Pennsylvania and graduated West Scranton High School in 1965. Following his service in the Army, he moved to Hollywood to fulfill his modeling and acting aspirations. He returned East and settled in New York City, where he owned/operated Ty's Bar on Christopher St. in Greenwich Village for 40 years. Eddie, as he was known by family and friends, was an avid fan of the arts, including music, theater, dance and film. He loved entertaining and to say he was an amazing cook would be an understatement. He enjoyed history and traveling the world. He was dedicated to charity work, supporting organizations such as the Humane Society, Family to Family, Friends of the Poor, Covenant House, Fireflag/EMS, God's Love We Deliver, New York Foundling Hospital, Callen-Lourde Health Center, Gay Men's Choir, Broadway Cares, Leek and Watts Orphanage, Big Apple Softball League, GMHC and Feed the Children. A loyal son, brother, uncle and friend, Eddie was a great listener and would help anyone in need. To him, his staff, family and friends, I dedicate this edition of the New York City FunMap. He has inspired me to understand the word "dedication". May his memory serve to inspire others to live, enjoy life and be there for others.

ew York City is home to more than 8 million people and stands as the world’s dynamic center for the financial, media, advertising and fashion industries. Complementing these powerhouse industries are fine dining, visual and performing arts, shopping and nightlife that would impress even the most discriminating traveler. The city is divided into 5 Boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. New York City is often referred to as simply “The City.” This New York City FunMap® will help you explore the gay and lesbian side of “The city” so you can have a thrilling time. The gay movement in NYC has grown ceaselessly, with the annual Heritage of Pride, Pride March, Rally, Dance and Pridefest. New York City has always been known for it’s annual events and happenings that keep gay and lesbian life thriving year round. New York City is a sightseer’s mecca and a trip to the Big Apple is not complete without seeing some of the world famous local sights, including the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Rockefeller and Lincoln Centers, Times Square, Central Park, Riverside Park and the UN. Don’t forget to visit the many diverse neighborhoods of Manhattan, including Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Chinatown and the Financial District. This is only a small sampling of the endless opportunities travelers from all over the world will find for fun and excitement here in New York City. Trains, subways, buses, taxis, limousines, helicopters and ferries will get you anywhere you want to go, both in and out of the city. If the never-ending action becomes a little overwhelming, relaxation can be sought at nearby Fire Island. This beautiful beach oasis will calm your nerves and take your mind away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

DINING f you want to be where the gays are, Seventh & Eighth Avenues in Chelsea and Ninth Ave. in Hell’s Kitchen are the two gayest dining strips with numerous eateries and a maddening number of choices. Elmo is one of our favorites. The swank eatery has a rotating staff of cute servers and a lively bar. Whether you are craving a cocktail or comfort food, it’s one of Chelsea’s best spots for a night out. A few blocks north on Seventh Ave., Restivo is a traditional Italian restaurant with a cozy bar (Mention FunMaps for 15% off your bill). With a menu boasting Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, Alpha Fusion is another popular spot with reasonable prices and delectable dishes. Just off Eighth Ave., Sueños is a creatively festive hideaway serving tasty Mexican dishes prepared by chef Sue Torres. If you’re looking to eat right while you’re traveling, Muscle Maker Grill has you covered with the healthiest and tastiest fuel for your body. Place your order at the counter with one of the rippling staff members and enjoy! In the 40s and 50s along Ninth Ave. you’ll find a high concentration of restaurants popular with gay diners. 44 SW Ristorante & Martini Bar is the oldest Italian restaurant in the neighborhood. In the back, there’s a cozy lounge area and bar for drinks. Gossip Bar & Grill is open for lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and has a 4-7pm happy hour. Balkanika is a unique marketplace, wine bar and eatery serving Balkan and Mediterranean specialties. For something sweet, venture over to Tasti D-lite (Mention FunMaps for $1 off your sundae). Down in the West Village, Caliu is luring celebrity diners like Lady Gaga with its delicious tapas. Don’t miss the weekday specials on sangria and cocktails. Village Den and Manatus are two longstanding Village institutions serving classic diner fare. In the East Village, Lucky Cheng’s has been delighting visitors with hilarious dinner shows, drag queens and free karaoke (On Sunday through Thursday nights mention FunMaps for a 2-for-1 dinner/show). Also look out for their new Atlantic City location opening this summer!

Charles Chatter Platter Broadway Wrap by Charles Wegmann Summer 2011 has brought with it an unusually wide variety of talent and titles set to dazzle theatre lovers headed to NYC. Allow me to sift through the trash and reveal the polished jewels you simply cannot afford to miss. This column would be remiss not to begin with Book of Mormon; the most brilliant, drop-dead, laugh-out-loud, politically incorrect and universally offensive show in this or any other town. You'll be Christmas shopping by the time you get over what this script by writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park) is able to get away with. Another winner is Anything Goes. Sutton Foster has turned Cole Porter's fabulous musical into pure gold with the help of Kathleen Marshall's truly thrilling choreography and a score that just does not quit. Sure to delight the ‘down under’ of anyone reading this map, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is a jukebox musical that embraces every gay anthem ever pumped at a pride parade. The cast knocks the gay ball out of the park flawlessly relating that feel-good, crowd-pleasing story that made the movie the stuff of legend. Catch Me if You Can is a fun romp that allows the seemingly endless talent of Norbert Leo Butz to shine so brightly that I badly needed my shades. Making his Broadway musical debut is Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Both of these productions offer an enjoyable evening out and a refreshing blast of 60's kitsch. Robin Williams shines, but is not the only reason to try and catch the Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. Rave reviews pouring in from all directions have made this the exciting new American play of the season. It's slightly weird, but in a very good way. Sister Act the Musical benefits from Whoopi Goldberg's nurturing as a producer to the role that was memorably hers in the film. Alan Menken’s score here is stirring and effective, running from scandalous to inspirational. If you're interested in discovering tomorrow's star tonight, check out Nina Arianda's performance alongside Jim Belushi and Robert Sean Leonard in the magnificent Born Yesterday. Nina channels a spoken-word Cyndi Lauper in her portrayal of a floozie turned scholar that defines her coming of age as an actress. The set design along with Doug Hughes' spot-on direction garners very high marks for this production.
