2011-2012 EDITION Introduction to Alberta

We are pleased to welcome you to Alberta! Canada as a country embraces, nurtures, and supports diversity and Alberta exemplifies this philosophy. Edmonton is a city rooted in the arts, playing host to North America’s largest Fringe Festival. With its vast array of shopping and culinary experiences, Edmonton will keep you coming back for more. Calgary is one of Canada’s fastest growing cities, and has something for every traveller. Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, it is a city that will tempt you with both its culinary and cultural offerings. And true to its Western heritage, Calgary is home to Canada’s only gay and lesbian rodeo. Banff and Jasper are two of Canada’s most picturesque towns, and it’s easy to see why. Situated in the Rocky Mountains, both offer easy access to a host of activities for the outdoor enthusiast, and to some of North America’s most stunning scenery. So whether you come here to relax, get married, or party, we are confident you will enjoy the many offerings of Alberta. The businesses listed in this map endeavour to ensure you get the most out of your vacation, and we encourage you to support them. Travel Gay Canada (TGC) works with communities and the tourism industry across the country to provide the products and services that you are looking for when travelling. Visit us at www.travelgaycanada.com to find out more about what Canada has to offer. Alberta is OUT to welcome you. Come soon and visit often!

Edmonton est known for its sunny, but frosty weather and world-famous shopping mall (The West Edmonton Mall), Alberta’s provincial capital is a major city located in the center of Alberta with a thriving downtown full of great attractions, restaurants and shopping. Ranked as Canada’s sunniest city, Edmonton has much to offer if you are seeking to enjoy the fresh outdoor air. Water activities include a jet-boat or a canoe ride on the North Saskatchewan River, or a sightseeing cruise on the city’s paddlewheel tour boat, the Edmonton Queen. For a relaxed day in the outdoors, the North Saskatchewan River Valley is the largest urban park in America and is one of the prime venues for summer festivals, picnics, and theater in the park. Edmonton hosts more than 30 festivals annually, and is nicknamed Canada’s “Festival City.” With more theater groups for its size than any other city in the country, it explains why the city’s most popular festival is the Fringe, which, drawing 500,000 people each summer, is the largest festival of alternative theater in North America. Hip, historic Old Strathcona is diverse area filled with one of the widest varieties of cuisine in the city. The many cultures that infuse the neighborhood's ethnic areas offer everything from Mexican, Thai, French, and Cajun to Japanese.

Calgary Greetings... from the Mayor of Calgary On behalf of my City Council colleagues and the citizens of Calgary, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our great city! From its humble beginnings just over a century ago, Calgary has grown into a bustling cosmopolitan gateway to the Canadian Rockies. It is a place where you can have an outdoor adventure in some of nature’s most spectacular scenery, eat at a world-renowned restaurant, and watch an award-winning theatre production, all in the same day. We have excellent shopping and dining and vibrant neighbourhoods, such as Inglewood and Kensington, ripe for exploring. Naturally, there is so much more than I can even write about here. I invite you to experience Calgary’s unique blend of urban sophistication and western hospitality. Once again: welcome!

ith all the urban attractions of a major city, Calgary has the distinction of having the picturesque Rocky Mountains for a backdrop. Its diverse attractions include world-class museums, Prince's Island Park, Glenmore Reservoir, and the Calgary Stampede. Not unlike Texas in the United States, the province of Alberta is Canada's cattle and oil capital, merging the best of country and city life. While boasting two major cities, Calgary and Edmonton, full of museums, shopping, nightlife and other attractions, it's the great wilderness of the Canadian Rockies and the scenic cowboy country that captivates visitors most. There are countless ranches and some of the most beautiful parkland in all of North America, so don't expect to come to Alberta without experiencing the rodeos, hiking, small-town festivals, barbeques, campfires, hiking, fishing and other splendors of the western outdoors.

Naheed K. Nenshi Mayor, The City of Calgary

Jasper bout a 3 1/2 hour drive north from Banff along one of the planet’s most scenic roadways, the Icefields Parkway, is Jasper, Canada’s largest National Park. With routes such as the North and South Boundary trails – each over 160 km – and shorter walks along the Opal Hills loop or up the Watchtower to Mt. Edith Cavell, there are over 1,000 km of developed trails to ramble along. With its shimmering blue lakes, long ridge-top hikes, canyons, bike trails and a world class golf resort, Jasper is a haven reminiscent of a more peaceful and more rugged time. It is also a refuge for much wildlife including bighorn sheep, elk, deer, and moose, which even feel free wandering its streets. While there, be sure to take a quick trip to nearby Maligne Canyon, which is beautiful in either the summer or the winter. In the cold weather it is transformed from the cool wet walls towering over the frothing torrent of the summer into a gorge of icy spires and pipes.

The Glacier View Inn is a model of environmentally sensitive design, built to incorporate the pristine environment that it surrounds. There are 32 guest rooms - most have at least two queen beds and a loft. All are well appointed, with satellite TV, direct dial phones, and of course spectacular views of surrounding mountains and glaciers. There are rooms well suited for families needing more space than a conventional hotel room, as well as traditionally sized rooms for couples or individuals.

Banff / Jasper Region

Banff oaded with hiking trails, mountain bike routes, world class alpine ski resorts, wildlife-viewing tours and back-country lodges, Banff – Canada’s first national park – embodies the spirit of adventure. Even in the streets of its charming alpine village, you might encounter a member of its healthy populations of wildlife which include big horn sheep, mountain goats, elk, bears, wolves and even woodland caribou. For a break from the adventure, the village of Banff, 135 km west of Calgary, also boasts unique shops and superb restaurants. You will also find top-notch spas, some of which have been built around the historic waters of the site dubbed Cave and Basin, discovered in 1883 by three railway workers – Frank McCabe and the McCardell brothers when they noticed steam rising from the hot pool. You will also find golf resorts, art galleries, and the world-class Banff Centre, which hosts a summerlong international arts festival. What you will probably find most memorable about Banff National Park is its natural beauty and vast size. With about 25 mountains, each reaching over 3,000m (9,840 ft), canyons and the most photographed lakes on the globe, Louise and Moraine, the sights are hard to forget.
