Welcome...
A Dedication...
to Provincetown!
to Steve Melamed
Provincetown is truly a place “Like Nowhere Else”. Unlike many vacation spots, Provincetown is not just gay friendly, it's gay inclusive. You don't have to find the “gay area” of town because you will be welcomed everywhere. There are world class beaches, a bustling harbor with lots of water activities and the National Seashore with miles of bike and walking trails through gorgeous sand dunes and forests. Just minutes from all this natural beauty, is a vibrant downtown which rivals any city. Fine dining, art galleries, unique shops, and world class entertainment all converge in an easily walked one mile stretch of town. Whatever your interests and tastes are, you can readily find it at your fingertips. Provincetown is a place to enjoy all year long. The Fall colors, the quiet of Winter and the reawakening of Spring all have their own special offerings. There are also special events year round including December's “Holly Folly” which is the only GLBT holiday celebration in the US. In the Spring, there is “Cabaret Fest” which brings the best of Cabaret music to Provincetown for one weekend. Whether you are visiting on your own, with a partner or spouse, with your family, with friends or as part of a wedding or honeymoon, Provincetown welcomes you!
"No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main..." This poem by John Donne personified Steve Melamed. He was a humble man who always extended a helping hand to others, gave friendship where deserved, was a good and honest businessman and someone who felt responsible for his friends, neighbors and who worked for the betterment of Provincetown. Together, with his wife Betsy, they ran Bayside Betsy's and lived life with a real "joie de vivre". His booming voice announced his presence and behind it all was a sweet and gentle man who only wanted the best for everyone. For those of us who knew him, it was a huge loss when he died in late 2010. We will mourn his loss and celebrate the life of Steve Melamed, a man for all seasons.

New England FunMap
featuring Provincetown, Boston, Providence & Ogunquit Photo of the Provincetown Pier Dance by Dan McKeon courtesy of P.B.G.
ew England is known for its lengthy coastline of white sand beaches, picturesque lighthouses, breathtaking fall foliage, pristine lakes, scenic mountains, delicious fresh seafood and quaint historic villages. Comprised of six states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island, New England has countless attractions and many sizeable cities to explore. Featured in this FunMap are the popular gay and lesbian travel destinations of Provincetown, MA, Boston, MA, Providence, RI and Ogunquit, ME. Provincetown, located at the extreme tip of Cape Cod, is like no other place in North America. Quaint, narrow streets and long wharfs remind visitors of the town’s origins as a fishing and whaling village. Only three miles wide at its center, much of Provincetown is National Seashore with beautiful beaches and magnificent sand dunes. The Pilgrim Monument, commemorating the First Landing, is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States. A mecca for artists and writers since the turn of the century, Provincetown’s appeal lies in the relaxed and isolated nature of its location and the sense of individuality of its residents. Visitors soak in the stark beauty of the ocean, bay and dunes while also enjoying the cozy cafes, restaurants, shops, nightclubs and cabarets that are all conveniently located within the town’s friendly, walk-able confines. Many love Provincetown for the fun and sun of its summers and the especially popular gay and lesbian events which include Carnival and much more. It is also a great place to visit in the off-season. In the fall, winter and spring, the town’s life is serene and peaceful. Food, lodging and shopping are available year round.

Getting Here lthough Provincetown is located at the very tip of Cape Cod, it is easily accessible by car, bus, ferry, and air. Provincetown is only a 2.5 hour drive from Providence and Providence’s T.F. Green Airport and 2.5 - 3 hour drive from Boston and Boston’s Logan Airport. Or, you can take a high-speed ferry during the season, from Boston to Provincetown. There is also a ferry that runs between Plymouth MA, and Provincetown. If you have the time, buses travel regularly from Boston to Provincetown. For a real treat, take a plane from Boston’s Logan Airport to Provincetown. It’s only 20 minutes but the view of Provincetown and Cape Cod is fantastic. Once you are in Provincetown, you really don’t need a car. Walk or ride a bike to anywhere. But if that’s not your pleasure, there are several cab companies, pedicabs and a subsidized shuttle bus that can take you wherever you wish to go on the Outer Cape.

Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch of Provincetown 307 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA 800-826-9300 Each Dolphin Fleet vessel is specifically designed for whale watching and comfort. Designed by GulfCraft, each vessel is built of aluminum with a double chine for added stability, and is powered by 3 Detroit 1271TI diesel engines. There is a sundeck on the second level and a walk out platform for viewing on the bow. There are no open rails on the boat, so you’re in the boat, not on it, with ample seating on both upper and lower decks. The interior cabin has seating for over 100 passengers and the cabin is centrally heated and air-cooled. We limit the number of passengers we carry in an earnest attempt to make each trip satisfying and comfortable. Our vessels are clean and our restrooms are spotless.
Herring Cove For a bit more adventure head over to Herring Cove and say goodbye to tan lines. The “nude” (not quite legal but commonly practiced, so be careful) beach of Provincetown lies on the opposite side of the cape from Race Point affording visitors warmer waters and less winds, there's even a high tide lake. Traditionally the right hand side of the beach is considered more family oriented, while the left is more gay-friendly.
High Pole Hill Road, Provincetown Completed in 1910, the Pilgrim Monument was erected in commemoration of the Mayflower’s first landing in the New World. The largest of all the granite structures in America, the Pilgrim Monument rewards visitors brave enough to make the climb to the top with unbeatable views of sand & sea.
Provincetown Repertory Theatre 238 Bradford Street, Provincetown 508-487-9793 The company’s goal is to produce works historically linked to Provincetown - new plays and contemporary classics to entertain and engage Cape Cod audiences. From presenting the plays of contemporary playwrights Joe Pintauro, Edward Albee and Terrence McNally, to engaging the award-winning director Jose Quintero to direct the plays of Eugene O’Neill, The REP is a shining example of regional theater.
Provincetown Trolley Inc. 37 Court Street, Provincetown, MA 508-487-9483 Provincetown Trolley will take you on a 40minute narrated tour of Provincetown, the first landing place of the Pilgrims. You will travel Commercial Street. You'll see the art district, hundreds of boutiques, and beautiful Cape Cod homes. See panoramic views of Provincetown Harbor(the 2nd largest natural harbor in the world), Cape Cod Bay, and magnificent Atlantic Ocean. You will go through the 4,000 acre National Seashore Park. The expert narration includes such subjects as the first landing place of the pilgrims, the "graveyard of the Atlantic", the Pilgrim Memorial Monument and Museum, playwright Eugene O'Neill, the oldest home in Provincetown, constructed with timbers from shipwrecks (c.1746). You will hear about Provincetown's first visitor in 1004, and much more. The Narration covers the past to the present with over 20 points of interest.
Race Point Beach You'll feel as if you've reached the end of the world here at Race Point Beach, where the Cape Cod Bay waters meet wild Atlantic Ocean waves to create a roiling surge called "The Race." The perfect spot for fun in the sun, this beach at the tip of the cape is often windy but full of breathtaking views. Sweeping over 8 miles, keep your eye on the sea and you just might spot a whale.

Boston teeped in American history and home to many colleges and universities, Boston has a small town feel even though it's one of the biggest cities on the East Coast and the largest city in New England. With over 250,000 students in Boston and Cambridge alone, the city has earned its reputation as an intellectual center. Boston University, Northeastern University, Boston College, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are just a small sample of the over 100 colleges and universities located in the Greater Boston Area. Boston is New England's transportation hub and home to the region's largest airport, Logan International Airport. There is also comprehensive rail service with three Amtrak stations. Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and Chicago lines originate at South Station and a second major station along the line is located in Back Bay. North Station, the city's third Amtrak station, is home to Amtrak's Downeaster service to Maine. Boston is a walking city, the downtown area is compact and has an organic street structure, while other areas of the city follow a grid. Boston is easy to navigate via public transit and is home to the country's oldest underground rapid transit system known as the "T". Sophisticated and cosmopolitan, a visible and energetic gay population calls Boston home. The South End is Boston's most discernable gay neighborhood. The area's main thoroughfare, Tremont Street, has developed into a trendy shopping and entertainment district and is home to a couple of the city's gay bars. The downtown historical district boasts the popular Freedom Trail, Bunker Hill Monument, Faneuil Hall and Boston Common. Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston, is home to Harvard University and MIT. There are many gayfriendly businesses, restaurants and a gay club, Paradise located there.

Greetings... from the President & CEO There are many firsts in Boston, the nation’s first Public School, first Public Park, and first Subway to name a few. Boston is proud to be the capital of the first state in the country to recognize same-sex marriages and the host of one of the oldest Gay Pride Parades in the nation, with a week-long Festival every June. This beautiful coastal city boasts one of the largest LGBT populations on the East Coast with neighborhoods like Cambridge, the South End and Jamaica Plain being well known as LGBT communities. In recent years one would be hard pressed not to find a rainbow flag proudly displayed in just about any neighborhood in the city. With one of the largest student populations in the world and an innovative local economy, youth-centric culture and energy combines with centuries of sophistication in this thriving modern city. Not only is there fabulous dining, shopping, museums, art and theatre, Boston offers a wide range of entertainment and activities with a distinctly Boston flair. You’ll find complete details on www.BostonUSA.com. We hope that you enjoy your stay in Boston and we look forward to welcoming you back again and again! Sincerely,
Patrick B. Moscaritolo President & CEO, Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau

Waterfire at Providence’s Waterplace Park - credit GoProvidence.com
Providence
Welcome... from the PWCVB
rovidence is a very small city in a very small state. Perhaps because of this, it has a distinct charm few other state capitals can claim. Much of the architecture is original eighteenth century and not many cities can boast so many sumptuous examples of Georgian grandeur. The neoclassical Rhode Island State House straddles downtown and Smith Hill and is one of the most prominent buildings in the city. Completed in 1904, it has one of the world’s largest self-supported marble domes. Constructed in the 1990s, Waterplace Park and the adjoining Riverwalk triggered considerable reinvestment in the city’s downtown. Now host to the city’s popular summer Waterfire event, Waterplace Park is a huge tourist draw. Branded as the “Creative Capital”, Providence is home to the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the nation’s finest art schools. Additionally, Providence is home to Brown University, Johnson & Wales University and Providence College. These universities, along with the State Government and several large hospitals and medical facilities comprise the leading sources of employment. Of political significance, former mayor David N. Cicilline was the first openly gay mayor of an American state capital. The city’s nightlife scene is lively with bars, pubs, dance clubs and restaurants sprinkled throughout the downtown core. Nearby Navy installations add sailors to a unique mix of patrons that also include students, artists and professionals.

It is with pride that I warmly welcome you to Providence, Rhode Island. The city was founded in 1636 when renegade preacher Roger Williams fled Massachusetts in the harsh New England winter, bolstered by his beliefs of the separation of church and state and religious freedom for all. As such, Providence is home to a diverse population and our seven colleges and universitieshave carried on Williams’ legacy of welcoming, progressive thinking. These include some of the nation’s leading design, research and culinary institutions, which lend a youthful vibe throughout the city, helping us feel younger than our 375 year history. Today, Providence is a leading example of a new type of American city – diverse, sophisticated, accessible and intelligent. And national media is taking notice. Just last year, Providence was named “One of the Coolest Small Cities in America” by GQ magazine and the coolest city in New England by The London Telegraph. The city is also praised for its sizzling culinary scene, most recently being named the third best city for dining in America by the readers of Travel + Leisure. Our exciting arts scene, highlighted by the world-renowned WaterFire event, is equal parts thought-provoking and accessible. Perhaps the best part of Providence is its compact, manageable size and friendly residents. We take pride in being a welcoming destination and the city’s convenient size is perfect for visits of all shapes and sizes. It is my sincere hope that you enjoy your visit to the “Creative Capital.” Warmly,
Martha J. Sheridan President & CEO, Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau
