2011 EDITION
Getting Here
s an International center of business, finance and arts, Canada's largest city, Toronto, is an urban cultural mosaic. Toronto is one of the world’s cleanest, safest and most diverse cities. Friendly faces, welcoming establishments, and a GLBT community of almost 350,000 creates an environment other big cities strive to achieve. The fact is, Toronto really is a great place to be gay. Leading the way towards a more out, equal, and accepting existence, Toronto recognizes same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples from around the world are flocking to Toronto to get married. Some even choose to stay and take advantage of the residency laws! Rather hook-up than get hitched? Toronto caters to GLBT subcultures with choices of gay, lesbian and mixed nightclubs, queer theatre, thematic and fetish parties and festivals, popular patios, coffee shops, drag extravaganzas, leather bars, lodgings and saunas. These gay essentials are concentrated on or near the famed Church Street 'Village' featuring many GLBT-specific establishments: Its like an outdoor gay mall. The gay beat easily mixes with a straight vibe over to Yonge street and down to the 'College West' & 'Cabbage Town' neighborhoods where you'll find various interpretations of urban cool. Then you must see Toronto's awesome skyline featuring the needle-sharp CN tower. Endless activities and sights include stunning views cruising the Harborfront, or riding the ferry to the Toronto Islands for cycling and sun worshipping on numerous beaches. If you're not shy, hike to the far end of Hanlan's Point. Special events, sports and festivals are celebrated year round. Toronto's world-renowned Pride Week festival alone attracts an estimated one million attendees. Your choices of museums, attractions, shops, bars, restaurants and lodging in this authentic melting pot are never-ending. If you’re the type who appreciates beauty, culture and diversity, you’ll be sure to fall in love with Toronto. 5

A Dedication... from FunMaps® As the Pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, Rev. Dr. Hawkes is at the forefront of ministry to the GLBT Community in Toronto. Each Sunday, his services at the Church are uplifting, meaningful and inspiring. As an attendee on several occasions, I have witnessed his gripping and wide-ranging topics. His messages were most inspiring to the congregation and me. Over the last decade, Rev. Dr.Hawkes has received many prestigious awards for his work in advancing human rights and social justice in Canada. They include the City of Toronto Award of Merit, the Global Citizen Award from the United Nations Toronto Association and the Order of Canada by the Governor General of Canada. Rev. Dr. Hawkes continues to work tirelessly in service of justice for gays and lesbians, helping society to better understand and increase awareness and acceptance of the issues affecting the LGBT community. He has played a significant role in promoting the inclusion of sexual orientation in the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act. It is with honor and pleasure that I dedicate this edition of the Toronto FunMap to my friend and a mentor, Reverend Dr. Brent Hawkes. He is a man for all seasons and may God bless him and his followers.
