A Letter... from the NGLCC Dear Friend: Greetings from the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce® (NGLCC)! Let us be among the first to welcome you to the Washington DC, Baltimore and Rehoboth Beach area. As the national business voice of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, we are excited to have you visiting an area which is home to one of our local affiliate chambers – the Capital Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CAGLCC) as well as home to our main headquarters. We encourage you to patronize those LGBT and friendly establishments that are members of our local chamber affiliate. The DC/Baltimore/Rehoboth area is rich with opportunity for LGBT business and recreation. We hope that you enjoy your stay and understand why we take such pride in our member businesses and local chamber affiliates. At the NGLCC we believe that a strong economic infrastructure will speak volumes in our quest for equality; by frequenting LGBT-owned establishments you are building stronger businesses and helping us make our case from Washington, DC to Wall Street and down Main Street, USA. For more information about the NGLCC and the work we are doing on behalf of the national LGBT business community, please visit us at www.nglcc.org. Sincerely,
Justin Nelson

Greetings... from the President Welcome to the nation’s capital! There is something here for every lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender visitor—and with D.C.’s newest and most famous residents, the Obamas, it’s a climate friendlier to LGBT people than we’ve seen in nearly a decade. Just within the National Mall, you can witness laws being made, observe monuments to powerful historical figures, view the work of influential artists, take in the scent of rare orchids, and see the Hope Diamond and Julia Child’s kitchen. And don’t forget to check out our amazing restaurants, theatres, and concert halls. LGBT people work, live, and play in every single D.C. neighborhood, from Dupont Circle and Georgetown to the increasingly popular Columbia Heights area. We are an integrated part of a diverse and vibrant city. While you’re in town, be sure to stop in the Human Rights Campaign Action Center, located just north of Dupont Circle. From our center, you can lobby for equality while also checking out all the great new HRC merchandise. Again, welcome to D.C. and I wish you a safe and unforgettable time in the District.
Joe Solmonese President, Human Rights Campaign

ashington, D.C., situated along the banks of the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland, is a showcase of national treasures. The City’s streets are a patchwork of museums, historical landmarks, art galleries, monuments, government buildings, restaurants, shops and cafes. Easy to get to and full of sights and attractions, the City is naturally a popular destination for tourists and, of course, one of the gayest places in the country! The Dupont Circle neighborhood is most closely tied to the City’s GLBT population. With a rich history, the once downtrodden area acquired a strong bohemian and alternative feel with an influx of urban pioneers in the 1970s. Shortly afterward it became known as a center of gay culture, just like Greenwich Village in New York and the Castro in San Francisco. Today, although it has become increasingly mainstream, Dupont Circle is still recognized as a historic locale in the development of American gay identity and home to the majority of the City’s GLBT and GLBT-friendly businesses. Not surprisingly, the politically charged environment lends the City an air of distinction and a penchant for activism. Washington’s gay think-tank is one of the most committed and savvy GLBT communities and is home to some of the most powerful and visible gay men and lesbians in the country. If you find you’ve had your fill of history and culture and choose to sample a different type of excitement you’ll find some big name attractions just outside the City. Busch Gardens, Water Country USA and Six Flags America (to name a few) are only a short ride away. The chances are slim that a trip to Washington D.C. will let you down.

A Message... from the Chairman of the Board This “Is” the Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach Resort Area! This “Is” the location for your next beach getaway or vacation. This “Is” your destination for fun, excitement or serenity. We have it all! From quaint bed and breakfasts, rental houses, inns, hotels & motels, you will find a comfortable place to call home during your stay. Many accommodations welcome pets and boarding facilities are available. Whether it is a quiet Rehoboth Beach sunrise or a happy hour sunset in Dewey Beach, a little piece of paradise is waiting for you to enjoy. Your day can be divided between shopping at the many shops and boutiques or relaxing on award winning beaches. Imagine the peaceful sounds of ocean waves crashing amidst the playful sounds of children laughing as they build their sandcastles. The evening beckons you to an array of fine and unique restaurants, many with outdoor patios offering the stars for a ceiling. From pizza and filet mignon to that fresh seafood you have been craving, there are so many restaurants and so little time! Escape to north shores with miles of serene beaches in Cape Henlopen State Park or take a quiet walk or bike ride to Gordon’s Pond. Consider making it a biking day trip and follow the old railroad route to Lewes on the beautiful Breakwater Trail. Rehoboth Beach at Delaware Avenue, courtesy of WikiCommons user Dough4872
Rehoboth Beach ehoboth Beach was founded in the 1870’s as the site of a religious camp. Following the development of a railroad and boardwalk in the 1900’s, Rehoboth Beach evolved into an active resort town. Today, it stands as a year-round gay resort, with more than 200 gay-owned restaurants, shops, lodgings and night spots. Embracing the northernmost part of the Delaware shore, Rehoboth Beach is only a short two-and-a-half hour drive from Washington D.C. and Baltimore, three hours from Philadelphia, and four from New York City. Thought of as the Mid-Atlantic region’s answer to Key West or Provincetown, Rehoboth boasts two gay beaches with plenty of eye candy to look at and a lively boardwalk full of arcades, eateries and bars. Many of the restaurants and attractions are surprisingly affordable, and there’s a great mix of cheap, elegant and trendy. This means you can grab a hot dog, stop at a crab shack, ride the bumper cars or spend the day at a spa and sit down for a lavish dinner. If you’re looking for a more active outing, you can head to one of the nearby parks for hiking trails, fishing, camping and kayaking. On nearby Route 1, you’ll find a haven for outlet shopping (FYI, there’s no sales tax in Delaware!).

For excitement, you will find water parks, parasailing, go karts, and both ocean side or highway amusement parks. Additional attractions that are within easy driving distance include: golf courses, dolphin cruises, pirate expeditions, lighthouse tours, slots, Delaware’s only vineyard or a world renowned brewery…you decide! Looking to relax? Find a quiet place to read on a bench in a park, on the bay, or on the boardwalk or just enjoy the relaxing peacefulness of a massage or day spa. If you are unable to bring your fun toys with you, there are several rental shops for bicycles, scooters, surfboards, kayaks and more. For entertainment, try a wine tasting, visit the informative Rehoboth Beach Museum or the ever expanding Rehoboth Beach Theatre of the Arts. Shopping choices abound from souvenir shops to one of a kind boutiques and art galleries. And, don’t forget, your purchase is TAX-FREE….so don’t be afraid to buy a little more! Whether splurging on yourself or your four legged friend, you will find it here. This is one of the few beach locations in the Mid-Atlantic offering year round entertainment. We are close to many of the most populous cities on the east coast, and year after year, they are choosing to come to Rehoboth and Dewey Beach. Why, because we are “The Nation’s Summer Capital”. Thank you for considering us as your destination for any time of year. We look forward to making your beach experience the best it can be. Sincerely,
Matt Turlinkski Chairman of the Board Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce

Baltimore estaurants, shops and fun abound in Maryland’s largest city. The tall downtown buildings form an impressive skyline over a newly restored and dynamic waterfront. The Inner Harbor is quickly becoming one of America’s hottest travel destinations, boasting major attractions such as the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, Camden Yards Stadium Complex, and the Baltimore Maritime Museum. On top of all these exciting things to do and see, Harborplace and the Gallery at Harborplace feature over 100 unique shops and more than 50 eateries and restaurants. There is also live entertainment offered on the waterfront. Baltimore has a rich historic past with many picturesque areas which have changed little since the 19th century. The first settlers arrived in 1661, and it was later the home of Fort McHenry. While under the siege of the British during the War of 1812, the fort served as the inspiration for our national anthem by Francis Scott Key. Baltimore also retains the honor of completing the first major monument in memory of George Washington. Enhancing Baltimore’s historic charm are many recreational areas such as Druid Hill Park with its 574 acres and the Baltimore Zoo. To the east of the city, ethnically diverse Fells Point and newly redeveloped Canton are must see areas with cultural activities, and a growing gay and lesbian community serviced by many exciting restaurants, bars, nightclubs, inns and shops.

Welcome... from the Hampden Merchants Association Welcome to Baltimore's Hampden! We are one of the most colorful neighborhoods in a city known for its colorful neighborhoods. Whether this is your first time here or a return jaunt, we're thrilled you've decided to visit us. We are, so we’ve been told by visitors, an anomaly in many cities today. We are mostly a neighborhood of locally owned, independent businesses. You won’t find a Starbucks or an Urban Outfitters on our Avenue, and we’re proud of that. In their place you’ll discover a diversity of businesses owned and operated by a cross-section of Baltimore city residents. Our award-winning eateries and boutiques showcase the best of Baltimore. What’s more, the folks waiting on you live here. And the chances are very good they are a nationally recognized artist or musician. We couldn’t be more excited that you’ve decided to visit us, and we hope you come back soon. John Waters has said, “"I've always been inspired by Hampden.” We hope you will be too. For more information about Hampden, please visit hampdenmerchants.com. Sincerely,
Benn Ray President, Hampden Village Merchants Association

estled below Roland Park in the inverted triangle created by the Jones Falls and Stony Run Creek, the Village of Hampden has retained the charm of its cotton mill heritage. The success of the thriving commercial port of Baltimore was driven by her Baltimore Clipper sailing ships powered by "cotton duck" sails-manufactured in Hampden, an independent mill town until it was incorporated into the City of Baltimore in the early 1900s. When the mills finally closed down toward the end of the 20th century, Hampden fell briefly on hard times until a few individuals began the retail resurgence which is still expanding. "The Avenue," West 36th Street, is the heart of the district with shops spilling up and down the side streets. Largely individually and locally owned and operated, these quirky shops, restaurants and taverns are bolstered by numerous services including hardware stores and every salon service you could desire. Hampden, located near Johns Hopkins University, The Baltimore Museum of Art and more, is just a five minute cab ride from Penn Station and ten minutes to downtown. Our annual Mayor's Christmas Parade rivals Macys’. We have TWO street festivals: HONfest in June and Hampdenfest in September. And the Miracle on 34th Street? Here in Hampden, Hon! This amazing and eclectic display lights up the Christmas season. Plus we celebrate First Fridays with shops open late and numerous special events each month. Come Discover Hampden--you may never want to leave!
