Greetings...

A Letter...

from the Northalsted Business Alliance North Halsted Street is a bustling center of unique retail businesses, fine cuisine and exciting nightlife entertainment. There’s more to find on North Halsted than any other street in Chicago. We’re home not only to the 22 internationally-known Rainbow Pylons constructed by The City as an official designation of its most prominent lesbian and gay area but also to some of the most dynamic businesses anywhere. You can stay at a bed and breakfast, eat casual or enjoy a fine-dining experience, enjoy your favorite cocktail, take in a cabaret show, get a tan and buy vintage clothing, and browse the many unique gift shops, all within an 8-block area! Don’t take my word for it. Explore North Halsted and its likeminded businesses for yourself, and see how proud we are of our neighborhood. We’d love to share it with you. Sincerely,

Patrick Harms President Northalsted Business Alliance

from the Mayor of Chicago Dear Friends: As Mayor and on behalf of the City of Chicago, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you as you take the time to explore our historic neighborhoods, experience our vibrant cultures and meet our diverse residents. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community plays an important role in every aspect of this city and Chicago has benefitted from continued leadership and activism. We are proud of the Center on Halsted, Chicago's LGBT community center, along with the far-reaching, largescale community events such as the Pride Parade and the Northalsted Market Days that impact and inspire numerous neighborhoods. In Chicago you'll find an exciting variety of restaurants, nightlife, great universities and world-class museums accented by our iconic skyline and incredible lakefront. Chicago is truly one of the world's greatest cities. Residents and visitors alike will find FunMaps an easy way to discover dining, recreation and entertainment venues throughout the city. Again, I welcome you and hope you have a memorable and enjoyable stay. Sincerely,

Rahm Emanuel Mayor, City of Chicago

hicago is famous for many things: the Willis Tower, deep-dish pizza, the first Ferris wheel, it's baseball teams, the world’s largest Public Library, and now, being one of the most active, friendly and growing gay and lesbian communities in the world. With its breathtaking Lakeshore skyline and twenty-mile lakefront park, its celebrated scientific and cultural communities, its myriad of shopping, dining and recreational opportunities, Chicago is a spectacular destination for all travelers. Chicago neighborhoods, like Lakeview and Andersonville, have become centers of gay and lesbian life, with commercial and housing gentrification turning already successful areas into flourishing scenes. Located on the Northside, in East Lakeview, the section commonly known as 'Northalsted', is always incredibly popular among gay men. The Andersonville neighborhood, farther north, has long been a lesbian enclave and this community is home to a number of lesbianowned and women-friendly shops, restaurants and cafes. Chicago is rebuilding neighborhoods and big sections of it’s downtown area. New office buildings and housing keep the city vital for it’s residents. If you want to escape the hubbub of the center city, take a stroll through refurbished Grant Park or go out to Ravinia to enjoy the world’s greatest music. Picnic on the grass or dine at a world-class restaurant within the Ravinia Gate. Once you have experienced a concert in the 3200 seat open air, covered pavilion, you will return over and over. Chicago has grown into a global center of business, culture and recreation that is open and inviting to the LGBT community. Dozens of museums offer a wide range of works featuring the work of the greatest artistic and scientific minds in the world. Chicago boasts thousands of shops with the Gold Coast's upscale boutiques to the suburban outlet malls. Welcome to “The Windy City.” You just may find it’s your kind of town.

Saugatuck / Douglas ucked between soaring sand dunes and the glorious Kalamazoo River, Saugatuck-Douglas showers the spoils of resort-life on locals and visitors alike. With its beautiful beaches and eclectic cuisine and nightlife, the area’s relaxed atmosphere has charmed gays & lesbians for nearly a century. Once a thriving lumber town, Saugatuck-Douglas became a popular tourist destination in the early 1800s. By 1870, Chicago and St. Louis natives commonly traveled to the Saugatuck-Douglas lakeshore to escape the summer heat, but the area’s true turning point came in 1910, when artists from the Chicago Art Institute established the Summer School of Painting on the Ox-Bow Lagoon. Ox-Bow encouraged a gay presence in Saugatuck-Douglas and over time, the community flourished as a gay safe haven. In fact, tourists have warmly nicknamed Saugatuck the “Fire Island of the Midwest.” After forging a reputation as a gay-friendly weekend retreat, Saugatuck-Douglas emerged as a pillar of the greater Midwest gay community. Many who once called Saugatuck-Douglas a home away from home became full-time investors in the town’s success. As they fell deeper in love with their surroundings, the weekend warriors purchased and renovated homes and businesses building the community and making it an even better destination for gay and lesbian travelers. This summer, the City of Saugatuck passed its first non-discrimination law, protecting the rights of all citizens, including gays and lesbians... A wonderful step forward for the community.
