ort Lauderdale is a city with a multitude of options for its gay residents and visitors, building its base from the ever-growing and increasingly active gay community. With a host of bed and breakfasts, resorts, bars, clubs, restaurants and other businesses catering to the community, this resort city has stepped out of the shadow of its famous neighbor to the South, establishing itself as a destination in its own right. Its attractions are simple: a broad, long white sand beach, warm, blue ocean water, a friendly and courteous “family” oriented gay community, an affordable option to the pricey Miami Beach and easy access, by air, from anywhere in the United States, Canada and abroad. Due to the tireless efforts of the local gay community and an enterprising Convention and Visitors Bureau, Fort Lauderdale has become more popular than ever with gay travelers. This has always been a known fact to the Leather Community – particularly the European Leather Community who have, for years, converged upon the city for winter warm-ups. Often thought of as an “alternative” destination to Miami, Key West, Orlando and the Palm Beaches; these cities may have one particular facet that outshines Fort Lauderdale but it would be difficult for any of them to boast the complete array of activities this city has to offer. With its gay bed & breakfasts, mainstream gay-friendly hotels, several gay beaches, alternative and mainstream gay nightlife, tourist attractions, FTL's got it all. Check out the Everglades, Sawgrass Mills, Las Olas Boulevard, Galleria Mall, Beach Place, the Broward Performing Arts Center, Museum of Science and Discovery & Broward Museum of Art. There is also excellent shopping, fishing, boating, golfing & bike riding. Fort Lauderdale stands out as a pearl on Florida's coastline. For more info, check out www.Gayosphere.com

A Dedication... to Eric Lawrence At Eric Lawrence's Memorial Service on January 27, 2013, Royal Grande Mistress Carla delivered his Eulogy, I edited the eulogy to capture the essence of her inspiring words for this dedication. "Eric Lawrence was a loyal friend, a passionate mentor and a respected leader in South Florida's Leather Community. Wherever he went, wherever he touched the lives and souls of his brothers and sisters, near and far away, he influenced them and left a loving, lasting impression. This came out of his instinctive compassion and his intense love for life, friends and family and his genuine ability to love all, unconditionally. I salute his tireless efforts and expertise to make the leather community a better place, a fun place, and to celebrate the magnificent life of a loved one who has personally touched each of us in so many ways. Eric was a devout soldier, an empathetic counselor and a legendary leader with a consistent and flawless reputation of service, accomplishments and success for over twenty five years. Therefore, it has been my deep honor and heartfelt pleasure to have recognized and acknowledged Eric with the title he so honorably earned and deserves. My hat is off to you Eric! It is with love, recognition, and respect that we honor Eric as a “Grand Noble Knight” in the American Classical Empire and in South Florida’s Leather Community’s Grand Hall of Fame. —Royal Grande Mistress Carla As his friend and colleague, I dedicate this edition of the Fort Lauderdale - Wilton Manors FunMap® to Eric Lawrence

Getting Here By Air: Fort Lauderdale is served by two airports, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International (FLL) and Miami International (MIA). Fort Lauderdale Int’l is only minutes from the beach and downtown Fort Lauderdale. It is a smaller and less trafficked airport. FLL is host to Southwest Airlines, Jet Blue and other low-cost carriers that often offer better domestic fares than MIA. Miami International is one of the largest airports in the world and an important hub for traffic between North America and Latin America. American Airlines is MIA’s major carrier. Check airfare to both airports before booking your flight while also considering ground transportation. Fort Lauderdale is 25-40 minutes north of Miami by car and a taxi can run you up to $65. By Car: Three main highways lead to Fort Lauderdale. I95 extends south along the Atlantic coast of Florida serving Fort Lauderdale and terminates in Miami. U.S. Highway 1 provides access from the Florida Keys to the south of Miami and I-75 cuts in from the west and Florida’s Gulf coast. By Train: Amtrak and TriRail provide frequent national and regional service to the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. Convenient stations just off of Interstate 95 make it convenient to arrive and depart by rail. Call 800-USA-RAIL or visit amtrak.com for Amtrak’s schedules. For TriRail go to www.tri-rail.com By Boat: Fort Lauderdale boasts the largest passenger cruise port in the world. Excellent marinas abound with restocking, repair and storage facilities.

Living in Fort Lauderdale

Photo of Fort Lauderdale Beach by Doug Castanedo courtesy of sunny.org

ith a still growing downtown arts scene and new luxury hotels and high-rises erected along the beach, Fort Lauderdale has now endured more than a decade’s-long effort to redefine its sleepy, small-town reputation and step out of the shadow of its popular neighbor to the south. As far as gay travelers and residents are concerned, there’s no denying a discernable improvement. It’s certainly no secret that Fort Lauderdale has become a gayretirement haven. Many long-time visitors are making South Florida their permanent home. It’s hard to beat the weather, beaches and, like the phrase goes, ‘birds of a feather flock together’. Fort Lauderdale simply has a huge gay scene and it’s more affordable and less pretentious than Miami Beach. The current housing market offers a lot of bang for your buck. In popular gay neighborhoods like Wilton Manors, Oakland Park and Victoria Park, a two-bedroom house starts in the $250,000 range. In other redeveloping neighborhoods like Progresso Village and South Middle River, better deals can be found. On your next visit check the market out with one of our recommended gay-friendly realtors and see if you’re ready to call Fort Lauderdale home.

conomic revitalization over the past few years has made its mark on Wilton Manors. New shops, restaurants, and bars continue to make the ‘Island City’ an exciting place to live and visit. Nowhere is this more evident than along Wilton Drive, the City’s “Arts and Entertainment” District. By day, shoppers enjoy the unique small businesses offering gifts, clothing, accessories, home furnishings, art, photography and more. Then, after the sun sets, the Drive is enlivened by some of South Florida’s most popular gay and lesbian nightlife. Wilton Drive standouts for shopping include Gallery XO, which has unique art and eclectic gifts. To The Moon Marketplace is a fun, quirky shop to satisfy both your sweet tooth & your funny bone. They carry unique gifts and an astounding assortment of candies & chocolates. Island City Eye Care, fashionable eyewear and service. The Mix, for the finest upscale men's fashion, True Blue, a young man's sportswear style store. Visit Nuts About Yogurt to satisfy your craving for a cold and delicious treat. The sweetest addition to the Drive is Double Dippers an old fashioned ice ccream parlor featuring 40 awesome flavors of Hershey's Ice Cream. Boomerangs for excellent buys on clothing and other gift items. Shades of the Past - antiques galore with a flair. Need a haircut, hairstyling or manicure, Mo Jo's Men's Room is the place to go. Off the Drive, visit Poverello, a great way to save money on clothes and other accessories. Just South of the Drive you’ll find LeatherWerks and their complete collection of leather, novelties and accessories. Sterling Accounting Services for accounting services and Sterling Logistics for The Hopper and deliveries. The annual June Stonewall Summer Pride brings added fun to an already lively neighborhood. The City of Wilton Manors is fully engaged to improve the area.
