rince Edward Island – Visit us in 2014 for our “Sesquicentennial”

Prince Edward Island (often called “the gentle Island” because of the friendly, welcoming nature of its people) is perhaps best known around the world as the home of the infamous Anne of Green Gables, by renowned author Lucy Maud Montgomery. But, PEI is steeped in history far beyond our beloved red-headed Anne! PEI features in Canadian history as “the birthplace of Confederation”. It was here, in 1864, that 23 men met & established the foundation for what is now Canada. In 2014, 150 years later, every corner of PEI is celebrating this historical event. With too many activities to mention, check out www.pei2014.ca PEI is originally the home of the Mi’kmaq who call our beautiful Island "Epekwitk" (or "Abegweit") -- "land resting on the waves”. There is no better description of the lush landscape, emerald green grass and deep red sand, floating softly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - separated from the mainland of Canada by the Northumberland Strait. In its early years of European settlement, PEI became known as Île St. Jean and later, under English rule, it was renamed Prince Edward Island – after Prince Edward, Duke of Kent & Stratheam; hence, its Gaelic name among Scottish settlers of Eilean a’ Phrionnsa (or, Island of the Prince). It’s easy to get here! From Boston through Maine & New Brunswick, then across the Confederation Bridge, the distance is a mere 600 miles (a 10 hour drive). The Charlottetown Airport is serviced by Air Canada and Westjet, with connections via various US airlines. Cruise ships dock regularly in Charlottetown harbour to connect with Island tours & other amazing activities. See you in 2014!
