n San Francisco you’ll find the clear Pacific air is filled with the fragrance of fir. The weather is almost always sunny and warm. Being the hub of a huge metropolitan area, it’s the place to go to find action and adventure while the surrounding areas provide relaxation and rejuvenation. Each week you can feel the energy of the City’s many street festivals: Chinese New Year, Carnival in the Mission, street fairs in North Beach, on Union Street or in the Haight-Ashbury. The grandest street events are gay! SF Pride Festival, Folsom Street Fair & Dore Alley are parties not to be missed. Experience the city. As you are out dining at one of the city’s world-renowned restaurants, plan your next escapade. The F Line Street Cars take you from Pier 39 Fisherman’s Wharf along the Embarcadero, past the Ferry Building and Down Market Street, into the Castro District, where you can find your gay heritage. North Beach, previously the historic center of the Beatnik Subculture, is now the main district for nightlife! Take the famous icon of San Francisco, the Cable Car, up to North Beach and live it up at all the bars, pubs & nightclubs that North Beach has to offer. San Francisco offers some of the best shopping centers in the world. For the Savoir-faire shopper, be sure to check out Union Square, Chinatown, Hayes Valley and Haight-Ashbury. Each of these areas offer a uniquely different boutique or specialty shop that appeals to every type of customer from complex and cultured to groovy and eccentric. Stop and smell the roses at the many flower stands, listen to a string quartet, view the City's unique architecture, climb the many hills or relax in warm sun and cool mists that envelop the City. Don’t feel rushed, In San Francisco you can find yourself, touch history, and expand your mind. 2

A Very Warm Welcome...

Greetings...

Dear Friends, Greetings and welcome to our beautiful City by the Bay! San Francisco is a dynamic city, blessed with a rich culture and vibrant LGBT Community. Our long standing tradition of LGBT pride and community spirit draws people from all over the world. Since my first day in Congress, ending discrimination and addressing issues that impact the LGBT Community have been a top priority. I believe that for America to continue to be a great nation we must uphold our values of freedom, equality, respect and dignity for all. I am proud to represent a City that embraces the contributions of its LGBT community with open arms. From the Golden Gate Bridge to the Bay Bridge, from Coit Tower to the Castro District, San Francisco's unique neighborhoods afford an abundance of great adventures and breathtaking views. I encourage you to experience our world class visual and performing arts, museums and galleries, delectable culinary delights and our lively LGBT nightlife and special events throughout the year. I invite you to take advantage of all that our magnificent city has to offer. Best regards,

Welcome to San Francisco! San Francisco's 49 square miles are filled with a thousand reasons to stay, enjoy and return again and again. And no matter how many times you may visit, it has something new to offer every time. Whether it’s a new tapas bar in the Mission or an attraction such as the SFJAZZ Center which just opened in Hayes Valley or the Exploratorium on Pier 15. San Francisco also resonates with historic firsts. San Francisco is the birthplace of the rainbow flag and home to the first openly gay men's chorus and the first LGBT chamber of commerce. And I don’t need to tell you that San Francisco's famous diversity and atmosphere of openness and acceptance has always made the city the “Gay Mecca.” We don’t unfurl the rainbow flag once every 12 months for a special event. It flies proudly 365 days a year and events such as the LGBT Pride Parade & Celebration, Folsom Street Fair, Up Your Alley and Frameline’s International LGBT Film Festival draw travelers from around the world. New things to do. New experiences for you to enjoy. What more could you want? To learn more about our hotels, restaurants, attractions and special events, please visit us at www.sanfrancisco.travel/lgbt and be sure to follow us at www.facebook.com/onlyinsf and the more than 100,000 who follow “OnlyinSF” at http://twitter.com/onlyinsf. Best wishes for an unforgettable visit,

Greetings...

from the President

Whether you live, work, play or vacation in the San Francisco Bay Area, the people of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Business Association gladly welcome you to one of the most exciting cities on earth. As the nation’s first LGBT Chamber of Commerce, we are proud to be part of a region that is so inclusive of our LGBT community. If you are a visitor who has picked up this directory, I encourage you to patronize these LGBT & Allied businesses during your stay and to seek out LGBT chambers of commerce and their members wherever your travels take you. Many discounts and hot deals from these businesses can be found at ggba.com. If you reside in the Bay Area and you are a business owner, corporate manager or executive, sales professional, non-profit leader, or savvy consumer, please consider the ways GGBA can help you grow your business, connect with your LGBT community, meet your sales goals, develop your professional network or save you money. Whether you’re here for a few days or a lifetime, we thank you for your continued support of our LGBT business community.

A Letter... from the Publisher We are pleased to introduce the newest edition of the San Francisco FunMap®! The City and County of San Francisco is the principal cultural center of Northern California. Founded in 1776, this city has become one of the most popular tourist destinations for travelers. Most commonly known for its cable cars, steep hills, airy summers, and landmarks such as the famous Golden Gate Bridge & Alcatraz, San Francisco is truly a one-of-a-kind vacation spot. While there, take in the sights and sounds of Pier 39 and enjoy the main shopping and accommodation neighborhood in Union Square. Admire the beautiful “Painted Ladies” in Haight Ashbury, the Victorian Rowhouses as you sit at the Alamo Square Park. All twenty-seven neighborhoods of San Francisco are jam packed with fun and interesting things to do. The core of Gay life is found in the Castro District. Here you will find the classic Castro Theatre that stands as a landmark, one of the very few continuing movie palaces in the US. Another theatre district in San Francisco, is Hayes Valley, home of San Francisco’s Opera & Symphony. There is a plethora of entertainment, food, and nightlife to visit & enjoy all around San Francisco. Check out www.Gayosphere.com to view the special locations around the city that look forward to welcoming you!

Bay Area Rapid Transit

Getting Here By Air: San Francisco is served by two airports, San Francisco International (SFO) and Oakland International (OAK), both convenient to the City. They provide vital links to Europe, the Pacific, North America and around the globe. American Airlines and Delta are major carriers with hubs at SFO. Oakland Airport can provide less expensive alternatives to travel throughout the United States. Check flights to both airports before booking your flight while also considering ground transportation.

By Rail: Amtrak serves San Francisco with Daily trains from the East in Emeryville, CA. Also stopping there is the famed Starlight Express traveling between Los Angeles and Seattle, WA Caltrain brings passengers from and to San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. The Bart and Muni systems of light rail will get you to and from the Airport and around San Francisco. Don’t forget the Cable Cars and go half way to the stars.

By Car: There are a network of highways connecting San Francisco to the rest of California. Interstate 80 (I-80) has its western terminus here after traveling 3000 miles from the banks of the Hudson River at the New York State Border. Interstate 5 brings travelers from both north and south and famed routes 1 and 101 going to San Jose and the Redwood forests. 6

an Francisco offers the best of West Coast Dining opportunities. Indulging the palette in this City is a real treat. Fine restaurants and pleasurable eateries are scattered all over town, however you will find a concentration of them in Chinatown, the Castro Area, Union Square, Embarcadero, and South of Market Area (SoMa). A few fan favorites are the following: Café Flore, who recently was voted the “Best Café” is the “Heart and Soul” of San Francisco with its full bar and amazing drink specials! This Dog friendly café has sidewalk seating and a heated outdoor patio! Eureka Restaurant and Lounge is a newcomer to The Castro. Check out the wide range of small plates and entrees. Food “fit for a King and of course a Queen” The Smoked and Roasted Pork Shoulder or Butternut Squash Ravioli are out of this world. Hi Tops is best known for their cold pitchers and hot catchers. Located in the heart of the Castro, it is the first Sports Bar in the area. Check out the fun crowd and find your way there with a FunMap. Hard Rock Café hardly needs an introduction. Known for fun across the country, the local version is located at Pier 39. They say, “Where else can you eat the tastiest burger in town, trippin’ out on groovy rock artifacts and treasures, while jamming to the most outta sight tunes.” Lookout Bar offers a different event every night of week! There is always something fun going on at Lookout. They have an incredible bar menu of smacking comfort food and $4 Margaritas! Sit on open deck upstairs and enjoy the action below.

Pier 41 415-705-5555, 800-426-8687 www.nps.gov/alcatraz Sitting in the middle of the beautiful bay like a dark tower from a fairy tale is the notorious former prison known as the Rock. From 1934 to 1963, being here was far from child's play for inmates who were jailed in the federal pen -- among them felons Al Capone and "Machine Gun" Kelly. Alcatraz was famous for making escape impossible, and the Rock housed criminals for whom there was no hope of rehabilitation. Though three inmates escaped from the prison, they were presumed to have drowned in the surrounding bay.

The curves were carved in the early 1920s to afford horses and their cargo an easier climb up the hill. The road is one-way beginning at Lombard and Hyde streets, at the top of the hill. San Francisco Zoo 1 Zoo Road 415-753-7080 www.sfzoo.org Hatched from a rejected proposal to house elephants in Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Zoo was built as a Depressionera government project. GLBT History Museum Main Gallery – Our Vast Queer Past

San Francisco Int’l Film Festival

Mon, Wed – Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 12-5pm 4127 18th Street, San Francisco, CA 415-621-1107 www.glbthistory.org “Our Vast Queer Past" (Celebrating San Francisco's GLBT History) offers a kaleidoscopic view of queer experience in San Francisco and the Bay Area, raising new questions about familiar gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender histories and evoking previously untold stories that speak eloquently about our diversity. The exhibition doesn’t form a single narrative; our history is too varied and unruly to be limited in that way. Instead, it brings together multiple stories, sometimes interlinking, sometimes isolated, sometimes in conflict.

penness and Acceptance are key words to describe the atmosphere in the communities that make up Sonoma County. The welcome mat is out for everyone, regardless of color or orientation. The area is home to many smaller cities and each has its own unique charm. The largest city in Wine Country, Santa Rosa, is a hub of activity with shopping, theaters, nightclubs and restaurants. The community has a decidedly artsy feel and it’s a great place to catch a show or performance while you’re in town. A hippie enclave in the 60’s, Guerneville was built on free love and quite naturally attracted the GLBT community. To this day it draws many a queer traveler in search of rest and relaxation. Many resorts in the Russian River identify themselves as primarily gay and lesbian resorts and specialize in providing quality services to GLBT clientele. Downtown Healdsburg is a foot-friendly mecca for tasting local wines, fine dining, upscale boutiques, and art galleries while the small town of Jenner is picturesque and certainly worth a peek. Just two miles from downtown Guerneville are the Armstrong Woods State Reserve and Austin Creek State Recreation Area. They comprise more than 800 acres of beautiful redwood forest with some of the tallest and oldest trees in California. The State of California also operates the Sonoma Coast State Beach, one of the most visited parks in the state. Then there is the Russian River, which winds through the scenic hills of West Sonoma and provides the natural setting for your vacation getaway. 45
