including Victoria, Whistler & Okanagan Country ancouver is the jewel of the Pacific Northwest, recognized as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Canada’s West Coast is built on beautiful beaches, surrounded by sparkling waters and majestic snow-capped mountains; add Vancouver’s cultural diversity and urban layout and experience for yourself why Vancouver is a must-see on every traveler’s bucket list. Let your excursion begin with a visit to Stanley Park, 1000-acres of unspoiled forest, diverse flora and fauna, pristine beaches and panoramic views. Visit the Aquarium or walk along the seawall. Stanley Park is located adjacent to the West End; it’s here you’ll find English Bay, Denman Street, and Davie Street Village, the heart of gay Vancouver. Davie Street and its surrounding neighborhood is perfect for walking, dining, shopping for that new outfit or trinket, or having a good time at one of many bars and dance clubs. Thanks to a strong ethnic mosaic of residents there are countless flavors to choose when dining - including some of the best seafood, sushi, and Asian cuisines available – expect to leave your table full and very satisfied. Vancouver’s accommodations range from hotel chains to charming European guesthouses and quaint bed and breakfasts; expect to be fully pampered or left alone depending on your wishes. Ready to explore? Take a stroll through Gastown and its restored cobbled streets; or explore Granville Island’s markets and restaurants; or hit Wreck Beach – Vancouver’s only nude and very popular gay beach. Commercial Drive is also worth exploring full of vintage second-hand shops, vegetarian hotspots - a perfect setting for hippies, artists, lots of lesbians and LGBT non-sceners. It’s no wonder Vancouver is so popular with gays and lesbians you won’t be disappointed! 2

Welcome...

Welcome...

from the Mayor

from the Councillor

On behalf of my colleagues on City Council, I am pleased to offer my appreciation to the Vancouver edition of FunMaps for their innovative LGBT Travel Brochure. Vancouver looks forward to welcoming you to our city! I want to offer my sincere congratulations on the quality and success of the brochure. Vancouver is a city where diversity is welcomed and valued as a fundamental strength. Our City Council has been committed to building on the successes of our LGBT community in adding so much to Vancouver’s uniquely vibrant character, including one of the largest Pride parade festivals in the world. Our city is greatly enlivened by the countless gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered residents, visitors and businesses that contribute so greatly our city's social, cultural and economic life, making us so much stronger as a community and a city. Aside from our engaging citizens, Vancouver enjoys natural beauty, culturally diverse neighborhoods, an amazing arts and cultural scene, and a passion for sports and the great outdoors. Our local economy is predicted to be one of the fastest growing in Canada this year, and we’re working hard to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020. Whatever it is you’re looking for, Vancouver can offer it. Please enjoy your time in Vancouver – and come back soon! Yours truly,

On behalf of the City of Vancouver, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to our queerfriendly city. Vancouver and British Columbia have long been one of the most progressive jurisdictions anywhere in the world in establishing equal rights for all our citizens, including same sex marriage, which was legalized here in July 2003. Vancouver has a long history of hosting queer events. We were the host city to the 1990 Gay Games, the 1996 International AIDS Conference, the 2004 International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association's annual convention, the 2008 InterPride Conference, and the 9th International Conference of Gay & Lesbian Tourism. Vancouver also welcomed the world as host city to 2010 Winter Olympics, and the 2011 North American Outgames. Vancouver offers a wide variety of gay and gay friendly events year round and our Pride Parade draws 650,000 people on the first Sunday in August. I am delighted you have chosen to visit queer-friendly Vancouver. We invite you to explore our neighbourhoods to experience the many queer specific and world-class amenities we have to offer. We look forward to the prospect of welcoming you back many times in the future. Sincerely,

Gregor Robertson

from Travel Gay Canada Welcome to beautiful British Columbia, Canada’s West Coast playground. Vancouver is home to Western Canada’s largest gay population. This picturesque, ocean-wrapped and snowcapped city has a vibrant gay community that is centered around two distinctly different neighbourhoods – the West End and Commercial Drive, both of which enjoy a wide variety of restaurants, coffee shops, nightclubs and boutiques catering to gays and lesbians. Discover the duality of Vancouver: Urban sophistication and natural splendour. Whistler, just 90 minutes north of Vancouver, hosts one of the world’s most popular gay ski weeks. Victoria, BC’s capital city is on the south tip of Vancouver Island. It boasts many historic buildings and some of the most fascinating museums. The Okanagan, in BC’s interior, is famous for its orchards and vineyards and its wide offerings for outdoor enthusiasts. BC celebrates its diversity, and plays host to numerous gay and lesbian film festivals, sporting events, live theatre, and pride celebrations across the province. BC, like the rest of Canada, is built on acceptance and embraces, encourages, and supports diversity. So whether you come here to relax, get married, or party, we are confident you will enjoy the many offerings of BC. The businesses listed in this map endeavour to ensure you get the most out of your vacation, and we encourage you to support them. to Kavna, 1966 - 2012 Supermodel & Canadian Aqua-friend. This past year Canada lost a great animal icon - Kavna - the beloved mascot of the Vancouver Aquarium, matron of their world-famous Beluga family. As described in the children’s song "Baby Beluga", written by song-artist Raffi: ~Baby beluga in the deep blue sea, Swim so wild and you swim so free. Photo credit Vancouver Aquarium Heaven above and the sea below, And a little white whale on the go.~ As remembered by Indie, Kavna’s Senior Marine Mammal Trainer: "Kavna was the ambassador and supermodel for the Beluga family. Her photograph was seen by millions of visitors from around the world. Not only was Kavna well-recognized, but well-respected and adored."We asked Indie for the most important lesson he learned from Kavna, to take away from such incredible marine creatures: “It is how to take care of them, by respecting and preserving their environment." Thank you Indie, and the Vancouver Aquarium for helping us experience her majesty, Kavna. The Vancouver Aquarium hosts over a million visitors each year, entering them into a beautiful world – an underwater mecca; one which captures the imaginations of adults and children alike. FIND OUT how you can personally help Marine creatures by supporting the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue program; helping to rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals.

Victoria ICTORIA - British Columbia’s capital city, worked hard to shed its reputation as being for “the newlywed and nearly dead” and is quickly becoming a bustling urban contender on the Minor-tropolis level – small enough to be comfortable, but wealthy and lavish enough to have BIG ambitions. Great food, maritime attractions, and some pretty hot peoplewatching sessions on the weekend. FREE WIRELESS DOWNTOWN!!! Look for a city provided WiFi connection on your Mobiles. Nightlife – Dance through the night at Victoria’s top nightclub, Paparazzi, or grab a beer and great eats at The Ledge (popular for women & men). Victoria offers several gay and mixed venues in downtown: check out The Castle, Hush, or The Bent Mast )a popular restaurant which historically featured the reigning popular Miss Victoria as bartender on Friday nights). Looking for a sauna/bathhouse? Steamworks Victoria is open for your enjoyment. Beaches – You are on an island – they are everywhere. Rocks. Sands. Lakes. Peers. Even a nudist one (at Prior Lake). Check out the local “fave” beach hangout out, Mile Zero (0), where the Trans Canada Highway starts, (next to Beacon Hill Park) joked about as “Victoria’s best-known beat”! Hello Boys! Coffee Houses & Bookshops/Comic Shops - Serious Coffee is exactly that! A regular hangout for the University of Victoria Pride Society - look for it on Broad Street amongst heritage

buildings and a rich variety of shops and entertainment. Habit Coffee near to Yates/Blanchard is a hipster-local coffee house which walks the fine line between snooty-chiq and warmfriendly. Comic Book Shops galore on Johnson St. Secondhand Bookstores in the area are worth a second-look. Dining – Victoria is going through a Foodie-Boom! with tons of great restaurants, catering to Fin-free, Hundred Mile, Vegan and other diets (eating styles) all over the downtown core. One could pass summer weekends on patios like Bon Rouge Bistro on Courtney St. or huddle-up for the winter with warmth and cheer in stunning Steakhouses, Seafood stops or Raw/Oyster Bars. Check out Pescatores, The Mint or Browns Socialhouse (near to Executive House Hotel) for varied great nights out. Must-Sees – Craigdarroch Castle is a stunning heritage building & luxurious estate in Victoria, which offers history and some spooky tales from yesteryear. Or get lost for the morning in the Royal BC Museum (RBCM) featuring incredible exhibits in 2012/13 (see www.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca), continue your afternoon with High Tea at the Empress or restaurants near the Wharf. Finally Fan Tan Alley, is worth the adventure - Canada’s oldest Chinatown, like a scene out of Harry Potter with tiny alleys and never-ending” shops, great for dim sum and noodle shops even an infamous underground tunnel system (not accessible to Public since the “rave days”).
