HOME SWEET HOME ON THE RANGE Bison Herd Enjoying New Home

The much-loved bison herd of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area have moved to new pasture land. They are now in a better grazing area and are more viewable than ever. Visitors will need to know updated information on parking and the trail to enhance their experience.

The new location is just across Hwy. 177 from the pasture they had been in since 1934, but that area was neither the best, nor the safest, location to catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals. Rangers are suggesting that guests park at Pavilion Springs, just north of the bison grazing lands. From there, look for the path marked as Veteran’s Trail. This trail is a level, crushed granite trail that is a half mile length one-way. From there, visitors have a wide-open view across the grazing land. Relocation of the ten-animal herd will not just be good for the bison but also for the land. Although smaller, the new pasture has more grazeable land, supplying better nutrition. The previous pasture will be restored for rotational feeding.

While parking at Pavilion Springs and hiking the Veteran’s Trail is the closest method of viewing, overflow parking may be found at Hillside Springs or Lincoln Bridge. Look for the pedestrian underpass to safely cross under Hwy. 177. The first quarter mile of Veteran’s Trail is a wooded path until walkers reach the prairie overview. Benches are available. Bring your water and your phone… and share your photos on Facebook with Fun Times Magazine – Promoting FUN in the Arbuckles. #VisitTheArbuckles

Journey into THE WILDERNESS

Load the family into the car and set out on a safari adventure at Arbuckle Wilderness. This scenic drive-thru animal park will give you a close-up of a variety of exotic species where everyone will enjoy the walk-thru park and petting zoo. This excursion is a great opportunity to be amazed, create memories, and laugh at the antics of the animals.

The usual “characters” are here to give you a peek in to their day. Keep on the lookout for camels, zebras, bison, and ostriches. A little heads-up here: the ostrich and his camel friend are fairly certain you picked up a bucket or two of feed at the gate…and they are coming for it! Have your camera ready because pandemonium is about to ensue. Screams and laughter are guaranteed.

Arbuckle Wilderness has quite an offering of the more unusual animals. Keep an eye out for the stunning white tiger, the beautifully marked and elegant giraffe, the watusi cow, with its huge, awkward horns, and the Artic Wolf. Add in the prehistoriclooking rhino, the mischievous hyena, and the alpaca with their quirky, but oh-so-cute, grin.

After your drive, stop at the walk-thru park and petting zoo. Let the kids work off some energy at the moon bounce. Take a gander at the exhibits in the reptile house. The walk-thru park is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.

Safari bus tours are available for groups of 20 or more, reservations required. Take the exotic journey together and up the fun level!

Arbuckle Wilderness is located just off I-35 at exit 51, south of Davis, OK; two hours from the DFW Metroplex and an hour south of Oklahoma City. General admission price is $16.99 for adults and $14.99 for children ages 4 to 11; 3 and under are free. This includes the safari drive-thru and the walk-thru area. A military discount with ID and a Senior (55+) discount are offered.

Viewing the animals up close is spectacular but please remember – animals are unpredictable! Stay inside your car, feed from cups and don’t put your hands in harm’s way. Check out the website for safety guidelines. www.arbucklewilderness.com For additional information, phone 1-800-PETPARK (738-7275).

pie is Love!

Everybody has an opinion. Your opinion and a buck-fifty (these days) might get you a cup of coffee. There is one subject in the Arbuckles where opinions are firm and it doesn’t matter if you are a local or passing through. The question that brings about such a strong point of view? The hands-down BEST flavor of an Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pie. This may not seem too news-worthy in a world where upheaval seems to be at every turn, but the banter back and forth over the minute details of a subject we all love, somehow keeps us all together. And maybe, if you are undecided on a favorite, you have an excuse to keep returning. So, what will it be? The fruit pies… cherry, apricot, peach, and more (in sweet and no sugar added). Or maybe cream… chocolate, coconut, lemon, peanut butter chocolate. You might even convince yourself you are having dinner with a savory broccoli & chicken or a Tex/Mex. Any way you cut it (pun intended), you are walking out of this pie shop with a grin as big as the pastry you just ingested.

What are you waiting for? Pie is love. I hear the call of fruit and flour now.

Local Lily’s Picks

Don’t pass up the savory pies!

I hear Lily the Armadilly’s favorite is Chicken & Veggie!

NATIONAL PARK OFFERS RANGER-LED PROGRAMS

Get outdoors, experience nature and have fun learning!

At Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), the Rangers make it fun to learn. There are programs year-round but summer hosts the busiest schedule. From Memorial Day to Labor Day you will find plenty of events covering a variety of subjects. Activities are offered to help all ages explore the wonders of our

H enson C abins

National Park. Morning hikes on Saturday and Sunday (summer) start at the Travertine Nature Center at 9:30 am. During other seasons, these walks are held in the afternoon. You can also view a video that gives the history of CNRA and explore the exhibits at the Nature Center.

Other popular daytime programs are the Junior Ranger and the Junior Angler Program. To become a Junior Ranger, participants are provided an activity booklet and, upon completion, earn a badge. The Junior Angler Program teaches kids all the fundamentals of fishing and furnishes a book, all equipment, and bait. This activity is early on Saturday morning and requires at least a 24-hour advance reservation.

Night time is also full of fun. Friday Night Nature Walk will allow you to examine the creatures that come out after dark. Call ahead on Fridays to make your reservation. The Night Nature Walks are held the first part of summer (9:00) and switches to the Night Star Walk at Veteran’s Lake in mid-summer. (Approx 9:30 - no reservation required) At Cold Springs, Buckhorn, and The Point Campgrounds, check out the bulletin boards for postings on Saturday night programs at the amphitheaters. Be sure to call ahead (580-622-7234) or check the website (nps.gov/chic) for complete details and reservations if required.

In mid-summer of 2023, visitors to the Arbuckles will have an opportunity to experience a different kind of lodging. Arbuckle Outfitters offers fully-equipped homes of all sizes for couples’ getaways or getting the entire group or family together. But they have something new up their sleeve that is truly unexpected.

Soon, a dream project will become a reality and guests will be able to book a stay in a train car and the attached caboose. Unlike any other lodging in the area, this upscale accommodation will feature a custom build-out with beautiful hardwoods, copper ceilings and picture window to take in the view. The main car consists of a living area, full kitchen and a queen size bed. The caboose houses a living area, custom queen size Murphy bed, and a tucked away twin with ladder access and a window with a valley view. Both cars are included in the reservation and they each have a full bath. Great memories will be made during a stay in this high-end railcar themed space. Enjoy a morning on the deck, family time around the firepit, and cooking on the grill. Located between Sulphur and Davis, near Arbuckle Lake, access is easy to area attractions. Holistic Happiness

Quality of life – the degree to which an individual is healthy, comfortable, and able to participate in or enjoy life events.

– Encyclopedia Britannica

Vibrant health and quality of life is something most people desire. To go about our everyday life, without pain and discomfort and with the ability to live life to the fullest and achieve our dreams is the ultimate goal. When these are not standards we possess, we usually seek ways to achieve or regain that quality.

In the Arbuckle Mountain Area, a group of practitioners is assisting clients to attain that vibrancy. Native Wellness, located in Sulphur, OK, partners with people interested in having a better

quality of life through nutritional support and lifestyle coaching. In working together, better health is achieved with measurable results.

LaKrista O’Dell, RN, NRT, Holistic Practitioner and Amber Dillon, NRT, Integrative Health Practitioner provide non-invasive assessments for a range of clients, from pediatric to geriatric. Bioindividualized plans are created, with the focus being to get to the root of health issues, not just the symptoms. The team assesses and assists with autoimmune conditions, digestive

issues, allergies, hormones, detox and more, all with a gentle approach. Many of their clients have suffered with longterm health conditions, seeking answers from multiple medical sources, with little or no positive results. Having hope and a new path to wellness is life changing. If your health is impacting family, work and personal life, it may be time to seek that new path. To gain information, visit the website, www.nativewellnessllc.com or the very informative Facebook page. Reach Native Wellness at 580-618-1109.

A WARM WELCOME IN DOUGHERTY, OK

If you are from the “Big City” (anything with a population over 25,000), you’ve probably not every experienced any place like Dougherty, OK. You would do yourself a favor if you took the meandering road to this community in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains and spent a little time. Heck, the scenic drive alone, coming in from any direction, is well-worth the fuel you will expend.

Dougherty’s history lays claim to a few outlaws, a large number of hard-working individuals in rockcrushing plants, cotton gins, on farms and ranches, the birthplace of an American jazz and pop singer (Kay Starr) and even the occasional rumor of a Sasquatch sighting. The unusual is the expected in this quiet, secluded burg, and the locals are fine with that. The historic train depot has left the community

once and returned. Yes, you read that correctly, the depot, not the train. The 2020 Census reports a population of 215 people. This means everyone knows everyone and your mama will know what you did before you get home. If you seek lodging in this city, it will be in an upscale treehouse for grown-ups (Rock Creek Retreat) east of town. If your lodging is on wheels, park it at Dougherty RV Park and be a local for a few days.

There is only one store in town, but that is all you need. Start the morning with a breakfast biscuit while you “suds your duds” at the Dougherty Store. Gas up your car, grab some snacks and prepare for a day of adventure. You will depart with a warmed heart, knowing you have experienced something rare these days… community hospitality. Roll the window down, drop it in to drive and slowly pull away as the shopkeeper waves and calls out “Y’all come back now.” And she truly means it!

This page was funded by TISHOMINGO REFUGE EDUCATION AND ECOLOGY SOCIETY (TREES), an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation of natural resources on the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge, as well as ecology education and responsible wildlifeoriented activities for all ages.

TREES also supports the Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery (another great place to visit!).

Contact them at theVisitor’s Center.

Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge PICTURE NATURE’S PERFECTION

The Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge spans 14,464 acres around the waters of the Washita River and Lake Texoma. These lands are managed for the benefit of the area wildlife and for visitors to enjoy! The Refuge features hiking trails, beautiful scenic views, docks for launching kayaks or canoes, great fishing spots, picnic areas and an observation deck. The TNWR Visitor’s Center opened in early 2022. A variety of exhibits are offered, including orientation maps and videos, wildlife and natural habitat displays, interactive games and seasonally changing exhibits. A stop at the center before your tour through the refuge will equip you to better enjoy your time.

Kick your brain into gear with the “Who Lives Here” game, or the “Have You Seen…” wall. Center staff are on hand to answer questions and give you guidance before you strike out on an exploration of the refuge. At the end of your tour, drop back in and report your experience using the exhibit tokens to record what you have spotted.

Whether you are planning a day trip or a longer stay, you will find plenty to enjoy. Wildlife, bird watching and historic appreciation top the list in this scenic refuge. You may also enjoy self-guided trails through wildflower fields, woods and wetlands, a picnic pavilion with grills, fishing, boating, canoeing or kayaking in the summer season. Washita River, Pennington Creek and Sandy Creek flow in to greater Lake Texoma, providing homes to many fish, migratory birds and resident wildlife. Seasonal hunting is allowed and primitive campgrounds are available.

The refuge is open year-round, during daylight hours. Visitor Center hours: 8:00 am–4:00 pm every weekday except Tuesdays.

Consult Facebook for up-to-date information on schedules and programs. The visitor’s center is located at 11766 S. Refuge Road, south of Tishomingo. Call 580-371-2402 for information.

TISHOMINGO NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY

Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery is 220 acre U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facility established and constructed in the 1930s to provide warm-water fish for stocking in lakes and ponds. The hatchery now plays a key role in the Service’s efforts to protect and restore declining and imperiled populations of fish and other aquatic species of the South-Central United States.

Its primary purpose is the spawning, growth, and delivery of American Paddlefish, Alligator Snapping Turtles, Alligator Gar, and Channel Catfish.

MUSEUM DISPLAYS THE BUILDING OF A CITY Visit Wilson Historical Musuem

When we visit large, bustling cities today, it is hard to imagine vast, uninhabited prairie lands of Oklahoma in the early 1900s. From these plains, cities sprang to life out of either necessity, opportunity, or convenience. Wilson, OK was developed on the foundation of all three.

The town site was originally a huge cornfield. Due to oil interests in the area and the need to move equipment, goods and people, a railroad was built by John Ringling, owner of the Ringling Circus. The tracks stretched from Ardmore to Ringling, named after the business man, and Wilson gained a depot.

Where cornstalks previously grew, oil derricks sprang up and a community formed. The natural evolution of businesses and services, a post office, banks, and churches soon followed and in 1918 the town of Wilson became official. As the oil industry “boomed” so did the population. The city grew to 5,000 residents and was thriving until well after WWII.

The Wilson Historical Museum chronicles the enterprises and entrepreneurs that built this city and helped it thrive. Several oil “booms and busts” have occurred during the history of Wilson. Today, this is still a lively community of welcoming citizens, small businesses, and people supporting their neighbors. The museum tells the stories of these lives through good times and difficulties.

Special displays that are not to be missed include Chuck Norris (of Texas Ranger fame) memorabilia, sculptures by Jim Miller, and a revolving, seasonal exhibit. The museum houses a genealogical research library and hosts a fun scavenger hunt for kids (of all ages) to encourage digging into history.

Stop by for a visit at 1270 8th St, downtown Wilson. Open on Fri. & Sat. from 10am-4pm; you can gather more info at www.wilsonhistoricalmuseum.org or by calling 580-668-2502.
