Safety for you and your caregiver Personal and professional safety measures protect paraprofessional caregivers against dangers that could cost them their life, their health, their mobility, and their job. In many ways, ensuring safety in caregiver’s job is not much different from staying safe in their own home or personal life. The most likely causes of injury for a home care worker are: lifting and moving patients without using proper body mechanics; twisting while lifting; slips, trips, or falls; needle sticks, cuts and bruises; auto accidents; performing tasks not on care plan; animal bits or scratches, insect stings, assaults by a patient; and burns. Don’t take safety for granted! ■ Be alert, Use caution ■ Stick to the care plan ■ Know your limitations, Don’t try to do more than you should ■ Shortcuts in time and energy are not worth anyone’s health or life.
