t
he Celebrity Cricket League is back with a bang. Last season the television ratings were higher than the IPL. The team owners and the stars are extremely happy about how the show has been shaping up. Interacting with the Daikin Amma Kerala Strikers, the first thing that struck me was the amount of professionalism and competition that has come into play. In the 4th season, the notion of being a unit that represents the film industry is cherished with a certain amount of pride. The teams have shaped up knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses, targeting the best players. The contest is certainly going to be thrilling with all the drama and suspense associated with both cricket and films being played out on the fields.

Burberry shirt worn by Romeo Beckham contain toxic chemicals
Mc’dowell Signature Indian Derby 2014 to begin in Feb The ultimate test of class and talent for a thoroughbred –the McDowell Signature Indian Derby - was held this year at the famed Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai on February 1st and 2nd, 2014. Besides the finest race horses on show, top international jockeys were flown in by the horse owners to give their respective horses the best rider available. Internationally acclaimed jockeys such as Richard Hughes, David Allan, Jimmy Fortune, Franco Dasalva, Olivier Peslier took on Indian saddle stars A. Sandesh, Dashrath Singh, S. Zervan, P. Trevor and Suraj Narredu, in a stiff competition to win the most sought-after Trophy and the rich purse that goes with it.
The purple metallic shirt worn by Romeo Beckham for a Vogue shoot is found to contain high level of nonylwphenol ethoxylates, a harmful chemical that can interfere with hormones and more importantly create damage to the Earth. Burberry, the fashion house has however denied such charges.

tit bits Vatican tweets graffiti of hero pontiff The white caped crusader appeared on a wall just off Borgo Pio, a tiny cobble-stoned street near St. Peter’s Square. In typical superhero fashion, Francis right fist is thrust in the air, leading him in flight, while his left clutches his black satchel. “Valores,” or values in Spanish, is written across it. The 77-year-old Argentine pontiff is renowned for throwing off his security and plunging into the crowds to greet pilgrims, and often uses jokes or stories to spread the values of the Church. The pope is a keen Twitter user himself, regularly posting tweets on his own feeds in nine languages, which boast more than 10 million followers in total. The pontiff famously lives a life of simplicity, shunning the papal palace for a more modest two-room apartment. In less than a year since his papacy began, Pope Francis has done much to separate himself from past popes and establish himself as a people’s pope, says Rolling Stone magazine that has the Pope on its cover.

t
he Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor has been vying for attention from two different sports fans and athletes. The Federation Cup football matches were happening here but more importantly, The Daikin Amma Kerala Striker team for the Celebrity Cricket League is also practicing their craft at the same grounds. Big league cricket has only made a few tottering steps in the state. For every successful step, there has been equally if not larger reverses in terms of the IPL team and match fixing scandals. The stadium too has its quirks when cricket is played here, India has won around 80% of all the ODIs and the God of Cricket, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has got both his 5 wicket haul bowling on the same ground. The Kerala Strikers too have won all the matches they have played here, which might be crucial this time around but
more of that later. As I step through the boundary lines the team is in full fledge practice, it’s already sunny and each activity on the ground seems to be in progress with clarity that may have been missing in the last two years. Later during a team meeting, I meet the Chief Coach Chandra Senan at Dream Hotel Cochin where the team is staying. “The focus of the camp this time around is about getting the players match fit both physically and mentally. They need to pace themselves in both the innings. For this, specific tasks are given to all the members of the team. Special emphasis has been given to fielding, running between the wickets and technical corrections needed for batting”, says the Coach. The tan on the players is unmistakable and a few of them have a puffy skin from the extended time spend in chlorinated waters of the swimming pool. The team has been undergoing
major fielding drill under the sun, running around scarping their knees and elbows on the almost non-existent outfield. A full length dive by Rajeev Pillai has resulted in a shoulder injury but he brushes off the setback with his customary humility. The team under the watchful eye of the coach has been spending a mandatory hour in the pool for stamina building and breath control exercise. Mr. Senan is confident about the changes that have happened in the team. There is certain amount of hunger from all the players to improve and he points out that there have been remarkable improvements in some players, namely Riyaz Khan and Prajodh Kalabhavan. Of the opposing teams the Chennai Rhinos is very strong but they are looking forward to the match in Cochin as the home ground support will be with Kerala Strikers. The team meeting was very upbeat and the usual bantering and teasing evident all around. One of the owners Mr. Shaji calls up Mohanlal for a special message to the team. Mr. Shaji is very happy about how things are shaping up. The higher television rating for the Celebrity Cricket League is a sure fire indicator of how popular this event has turned out to be. He is a bit concerned about Mohanlal’s absence as, Lal had been the main motivator and energy giver not just to the team but also the management. Mr. Jaison a new member in the team management is very excited to be a part of CCL. As a Malayalam movie buff and cricket lover, this is the ultimate combination for him, and he is sure of the team’s success in the coming days. The energy among the team members revolve around two people Bineesh Kodiyeri and Manikuttan, one compliments the other with an obvious deference to the more senior player. “There is a new level of commitment for all the players primarily because the work on field and off field has been defined in a much better manner with a lot of effort on fielding”, says Bineesh. Rajeev Pillai was very cautious when asked about the prospect of the team. “Let’s play hard and hope for the

She has been travelling constantly with the team during their practice sessions, not just sitting on the sidelines but actively engaging. The result is a very fit and trim Mythili who is looking fabulous both in and out of the jersey. “It will be exciting to have a women’s team too, hopefully in near future there will be one”,she says signing off.

he master blaster Sachin Tendulkar addressed the 8 teams of CCL Season 4 and complimented them saying, “It is an honour to witness this versatility in my friends. I have seen a few matches that have been played. Great to see the passion that stars have for cricket and indeed surprising to see the competition taken to another level.” The event witnessed celebrities from across the regional states such as Sonu Sood, Suneil Shetty, Sudeep, Ritesh Deshmukh, Genelia D’souza, Venkatesh, Huma Qureshi, Boney Kapoor, Dhanush, Shruti Haasan, Manoj Tiwari, Mahesh Majrekar, Mahesh Babu, Pooja Chopra and Charmi. Over and above, the legendary cricketer was also accompanied by his lovely wife Anjali clad in a yellow outfit.
saying no such ‘untoward incident’. It seems there was a rumour that pinching someone’s rear already cropped up.
The Sportsman Spirit Now we know how a sportsman reacts to both a victory and defeat, basically how actors keep a plastered face during award shows. Yet, when it comes to celebrities and sports, there’s bound to be a little more than acting, perhaps that’s only reserved for the screens. The Chennai Team may have won the finale, yet there was so much drama about how the non–strikers took a few steps out of the crease when the bowler was near him. Sudeep of the Karnataka Bulldozers, refused to attend the closing ceremony and the after party. Let’s call it the ‘celebrity man’s spirit’.
CCL Scandals 2013
Comment Crossovers
We’re going off the record, not by the scores but the scandals that surely left a few of the celebrities stumped.
The leading ladies enjoyed being an ambassador, though they may have not got their jerseys dirty they did splatter mud across each other. When Nikeesha Patel replaced Nidhi Subbaiah as the Karnataka team brand ambassador, the current Telugu ambassador Charmme settled for throwing taunts in the air, “Unlike other girls, I don’t shift my loyalties each year.”Talk about comments that go beyond sixers.
Celebrity Roar The stadium reverberates in cheers but CCL had its first scandal when Priyamani was supposedly ‘teased’ by actor Sachiin Joshi. It would have been resolved like matches that would have settled when the rain hit. Yet other parties got involved which eventually fanned press releases

Lip Personality
Cheiloscopy, a fascinating science about lips, lets one discover more about personality. So next time when you plant a kiss on your man’s cheek don’t forget to take a closer look at the pout print Text: Thabitha Marion Photos Various Sources

f a handwriting analyst or a palmist can read our personality, Cheiloscopy the study of lip prints can pass on a lot regarding us. How does this science work? Analyzing the different kinds of grooves found on the lips have led into the development of six basic profiles on lip prints, with each profile involving varied types of grooves in the contours of the lips. For self examination, here we unveil the correlation between your personal psyche and your printed pout. Apply a dark shade of lipstick and press a white paper onto your lips and read your lip print.
Triangle lip print It says: You’re thoughtful, compassionate, liberal and cheering. You are capable of being a proficient teacher, a coach or a counselor, enthusiastic to rally round confidence and caliber.

Closed lip print It says: Sorry to say, you’re obstinate. It’s thorny for a person to get you alter your mentality. However on the bright side, you pull off your goals in time.
Open-cornered lip It says: You’re energetic, but alas boredom is always round your corner. You like to be on the move. A day without much hurry-burry is more or less a monotonous day for you.
Full lower lip It says: Your benevolence and expressive nature makes you an adorable Dumbledore. And also your lips utter that you’re a rhetorician who finds pleasure in sharing thoughts.
Stressed lip print It says: The stress lines that appear from inside out depict the unresolved problems haunting you. To some extend you’re immature in handling relationships.
“Lip contours and shapes do communicate little about one’s persona. But I will not guarantee its credibility; after all looks are deceptive. The belief is that the tight lipped are bound to be moody and bolshie and those with fuller lips are big-hearted,” says Dr. Hari Menon, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, Lakeshore Hospital, Cochin.

Celebs Scalpel Tales
“The client requirements for cosmetic treatments in Kerala are in its nascent phase. I get to see only the creamy layer taking appointments. They’re curious to be acquainted with cosmetic treatments and surgeries. Elite housewives, brides and even women professionals between the ages 30-40 are the ones who by and large prefer to go for lip fillers,” says Dr. Shyam Sunder, Consultant Maxillo Facial Surgeon, Sunrise Hospital, Cochin. Moreover it’s attention-grabbing to come across men who are conscious about their lips. “I do come across a bunch of men; professionals and celebrities, who are fretful about their disproportionate lips. They approach asking for the most camouflaged treatments that can get them knockout lips. Psychologically, I guess it’s their sense of insecurity and the fear of being neglected that brings them to a cosmetic surgeon. Though we Malayalis are blessed with thick lips, for some width crosses its
We might be happy with our natural lips and their shapes, or even care a less about how it enhances our personality. But we have fashionistas who undergo scalpel treatments to look different and best during every spring season of their filmy career.

edge. If the lips are too broad and uncouth, I do recommend for a lip reduction,” says Dr. Hari Menon. “As body ages, lips start to lose their plumpness. So those with an average sized lip must never think of going under the knife for a lip reduction,” he adds. On one hand when we have Malayali men opting for reduction, on the other we have women who fancy lip enhancements by means of soft tissue fillers, which can make other women around them green with envy for a year. Lip shape or size is a game of family inheritance. But who to blame for those dark and wrinkled lips got to be seen in chronic smokers? “Quit Smoking! That’s what we tell them to begin with. Darkened and wrinkled lips are a tell tale sign of smoking,” says Dr. Hari. If you are a chain smoker, next time you take a puff, examine the wrinkles on and around your lips. Cosmetic treatments are there for help. “Hospitals have permanent lip lining tattoos that wipes away dark lips with a new tone that suits ones lip,” says Dr. Hari. Definitely we Indians are not following the trends of Nigerian men who are head over heels with pink lips.

Sobha City in Thrissur has set a number of records when it comes to offering world class living options in Kerala. It’s one of India’s most unique, innovative and meticulously planned, self contained residential enclave.
romoted by Sobha Developers Ltd, one of India’s leading construction conglomerate with a prestigious spread across the country, the truly amazing thing about Sobha City in Thrissur is that it has set a number of records when it comes to offering world class living options in Kerala. It’s one of India’s most unique, innovative and meticulously planned, self contained residential enclave. Spread over 55 acres, it has a man-made 6.5 acre lake - the first of its kind in the country for harvesting rainwater and providing potable water. Over 1000 trees have been planted to ensure nature is in perfect fusion with technology in this green and eco-friendly township. It has 4.7 acres of land exclusively for play area and open greenery – one of the largest anywhere. Sobha City living options include villas and apartment complexes. The 25 villas - Sobha Malachite, rings one half of the crescent shaped lake. The apartments are in 3 towers – Sobha Topaz, Sobha Sapphire and Sobha Jade. While Sobha Malachite and Sobha Topaz have been handed over, work is in progress in the other two towers. They come in very spacious 3 & 4 bedroom options. In fact, the 4 BHK apartments is one of the biggest on offer in Kerala. A happening lifestyle comparable to the best is what Sobha offers its residents. Along with food courts, restaurants, multiplexes, entertainment centres, hyper market and shopping outlets, the word class Sobha Mall will be among the largest one stop destination for shopping as well as entertainment. The club house is modelled on the latest international trends for maximum entertainment, relaxation and comfort. All these have made Sobha one of the favourite living and investments options of NRIs as well as residents of Kerala, a reason perhaps why all the 25 Lake side Villas were sold out within the first few hours of the launch and only less than 70 apartments remain (out of more than 500).

relationship one night stand
Are one night stands s really worth it?
When it comes to one night stand men and women are poles apart; studies say casual sex is more satisfying for men than women as they are way too picky. ome call a one night stand shallow, whereas others may call it spontaneous and exciting. One night stand would often seem appealing to those who seek sex without repercussions, responsibilities, or guilt but does that mean one should ignore the danger lurking during a passionate session. So before you jump on to get that big booty call, know the rules attached. Stay away from Alcohol and drugs Alcohol and drugs destroy and in no way up your sexual experience. In fact, they can influence your decision-making process
68

and allow you to indulge in risky and unhealthy behaviour. Apart from being poor decision influencers, they are also responsible for many lifestyle diseases. One night stands without condoms are a bad idea There is some merit to the idea of carrying a condom with you whether or not you’re accustomed to and expecting a one night stand. Man or woman, carrying condoms is a must if you want to avoid unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases. Depression is linked to one night stands Other than sexually transmitted diseases, alcoholism and depression is also linked to one night stands. Many studies have time and again proved that the shorter the relationships, the higher are the chances of depression. Also, rampant sex tends to put future relations in jeopardy as trust becomes elusive and cheating becomes
common.
choice, rather than a spontaneous act.
Sex with stranger Remember, a one night stand means you are making out with someone you don’t really know (socially and emotionally), so that can be a pro and con.
Hormones playing bad games After love-making the oxytocin or the “cuddle hormone” released can trigger thoughts of “It’s love.” This chemical might help create a bond between two people, to cause them to want each other more than anyone else.
Addictive One night stands can be addictive too, especially if you are not in a relationship. Habits like these are hard to break, especially if you like the thrill or the feeling of sleeping with someone that you don’t really know. Remember, habits like this can be hard to maintain and very difficult to handle. You Might Regret It A 2008 study from Durham University in the UK found that only about half of women experienced positive feelings after a one-night stand, compared to 80 percent of men. Hookups are best as a conscious

a
design graduate from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Arts Decoratifs, Sreejith Jeevan created a
brand of contemporary harbor, Rouka. Having worked with textiles in India and abroad, Sreejith now works from his studio in Kochi, creating a style that embodies the essence of people.
It’s Raining Rouka
According to the ‘Weather Forecast’ Kochi is heating up, but we don’t mind a change in the weather with Rouka. Text Atheena Wilson Photos Various Sources
There’s an intriguing factor in the name of your brand, what’s in the name? I was extremely particular that the brand name should be a malayalam term; should be quirky and with many different meanings. Rouka in malayalam means a bodice and it apparently also means a ‘corridor’ in Japanese. Both these meanings convey exactly what I wish to do through my brand. We promote a very simple aesthetic which is handcrafted by the many people for whom we are a corridor. How did the rainy season inspire you? Having lived in Kerala, one takes the rains for granted. It’s when you leave the boundaries, that you realize people celebrate rain so much. So I asked a lot of people what they do when it rains. The answers were fun. Some of them said they play with their grand-dads old umbrella. Some others go out on a drive. A few kids told me they play paper boat races. So as a brand that celebrates the concept of a beautiful every day, we believe in embracing these little luxuries. I am a textile designer, and that vocabulary is my language. So a stripe represents rain. A check represents a field. So when you overlap a stripe with a check, I say it’s raining on the field. What does your designs communicate?
70
FEBRUARY 2014
Quickies Who’s the most stylish Mollywood celebrity? Shobana. From those pearl chokers in the 90s to the handloom sarees in 2013, she rocks them in all. Your next favorite season that may inspire a new collection? I think I’ll move from Karkidakam to Chingam. The Onam season! I’d love to do a collection with just the pookalams! Any rain theme song that got you into the groove? Oh yes, Mazhaneer thullikal from Beautiful! Varmukile from Mazha... so many!
Rouka believes in clothes that are simple. I feel that it is a design sensibility we’ve lost over time. From the extreme minimalism of a ‘puliyila kara’ we’ve gone ahead to machine embellished polyesters! At Rouka, we want to go back to simplicity but at the same time with a deep understanding of the way people live. I look at people around me when I design. We make simple clothes that we feel would make a difference in today’s life. Keeping the weather eye open, what are the textiles that you have used for the collection? Weather forecast, as a collection uses cottons, cotton silks and pure silks, most of them handloom. We work with different weaving clusters that make beautiful fabric which are simple and elegant. Handlooms have to be nurtured and to find it a sustainable future, it needs to be developed into a luxury product because there are a lot of hands involved in the making and they
need to be valued and respected. What are the elements in your design that reflect your passion? By principle, I only do what I feel is passion driven. As a brand, it’s a conscious decision to only create products that reflect the spirit of Rouka. Rouka stands for three things- the beautiful every day, textile hand skills and an element of quirkiness. I’m passionate about all the three and they’re evident in the clothes I make.
An Indian designer who has a similar taste like you? Designers like A&T and Rajesh Pratap Singh have an aesthetic that embraces minimalism. If you had to describe your collection in one word it would be? Effortless! What material would you select if you had to launch a footwear collection? Leather, only leather!
What was the stream of your thoughts while coming up with your designs? Simplicity is not an attribute of just this collection. It’s a part of Rouka’s sensibility to embrace minimalism. Like I mentioned earlier, I look at the women around me. They have a hundred things to do. So we decided to simplify dressing for them. The colour palette of your collection sets a certain mood, is it evoked by what you see around?
2014 FEBRUARY
71
Interview Sreejith Jeevan
This collection predominantly uses an achromatic palette. It’s mainly blacks, whites, greys and accents of purples and blues. Rouka began a few days before the stormy month of Karkidakam, and these are mainly the colours that one sees at that point of time. You have beautiful sketches on your clothes; do motifs create a cultural connection? Yes. These are things people told me they do during rains. And at some point of time, as a Keralite, I might have done it too. The connection was easy! What’s the most distinct and indelible moment you enjoyed during the glorious monsoons? Before I started working on this collection,

I took a train to visit a few weaving clusters. To just sit inside a train and see visuals of rain outside through the moist thick glass was wonderful. In fact it’s that trip which triggered the whole collection! The trends are constantly changing in Kerala; do you see Kerala embracing a fashion evolution? Definitely. People are widely travelled and they’re no longer just inspired by what they see around them. The whole world is their canvas. They understand global trends and live a modern lifestyle more importantly understand clothes. I definitely see this bringing about the change. I personally believe in fashion that is inspired by the world but created out of one’s own roots.

Karishma Kapoor We know elephant ivory tusks are expensive and banned, but your ivory anarkali will just do. Unlike creating a huge drama with those flaring and over embellished anarkalis, it’s simple but classic. We love it, especially the buttons and your clutch!
ShrutHi Hassan Finally in Luck , the best dressed is always the lady in red. With her hair drawn back, Shruthi’s look not only accented her sculpted face, but also showed how a dress compliments one’s beauty and not dominate it.
Vijay Yesudas If the political parties had a fashion manifesto, this should be sealed. We love the crisp look, perhaps the next look for a political thriller? Rima Kallingal Not much of a ‘midduki’ here. We thought the shooting wrapped up a long time ago, so was the wardrobe.

Nazriya Nazim There’s a ‘neram’ for all these outfits, I think it’s high time to bundle up outdated trends, perhaps it should sink in a wide blue ocean, wait I think it already has.

Karma Cartel
A first film tribute to Kochi With his critically acclaimed short films Vinod Bharathan stands out from the crowd. We meet the director in blithe spirits talking about his latest venture Karma Cartel - a Dogme 95 attempt in Malayalam! Text Thabitha Marion Photos Various Sources
t
he awards and accolades this unconventional director has garnered in the International Film Festivals proves that critics and audience have taken his small films in a big way. Copenhagen-based moviemaker Vinod Bharathan is breaking all rules related to short-film making. ‘Limbo’, a three-minutes long short film taken using a simple iphone recently won the ‘best film shot using a mobile device’ Award at the IndieFone Festival, U.S.A. The first film in the Karma sequel ‘Karma Code’, was nominated at the International Film Festival Ahmedabad in 2011. ‘The Suspect’, a thriller, was the official selection at the Google+ Live Online Film Festival.
“I fell in love with the documentary genre as well, but I knew that I would never make a great documentarian that requires choosing his camera over his heart.” 76
FEBRUARY 2014
Realism is an attempt to express, devoid of artificiality. What inspired you to make a movie of this genre? Realism in films is a broad term and has several classifications. Karma Cartel belongs to ‘Realism of Style’, primarily focusing on visual style, acting-style and mise-en-scéne. I began studying films only after moving to Denmark. The film and television culture of Denmark that revisits the roots of their film culture, made it easy for me to learn European film culture from my couch. After graduating from film school, I made short films of various genres and often found myself using the realism method too often. Both the short films made in India, Karma Code and Karma Currency, used realism, and it is all too natural that Karma Cartel follows that pattern.
of me had to be changed. But the Indian actors I worked with had to take the daring step into the unknown.
we can envisage a visual that is not on the screen, but you cannot imagine music in the same place.
‘Karma Cartel’ has been enthused by a plethora of directors. As a director yourself, what is the one aspect that stands out in your direction? As a director I’m uncompromising. But this must not be mistaken for stubbornness. All the time while in film school, we were brainwashed with this mantra ‘Kill your darlings’. It didn’t make sense to me while in school, and I thought that my teacher was tripping high on it. But in a while when I started making short films applying that mantra, I could see the difference. Four years of practice has made me a ruthless killer of my darlings.
What about those attention-grabbing posters? I design my own posters. Since there was no need for multiple formats of posters for my web-based films, I managed to design most of them myself. But lately, I was introduced to Vivek Vilasini, well known artist from Kerala, who wanted to create an artwork based on the characters of Karma Cartel. The completed work is now being displayed in an art gallery in Mumbai.
One of the ideologies of Scandinavian realism… One must understand that a State Financed Film Fund mostly funds the Scandinavian films, which prefer critical acclaim to box office returns. This facilitates the filmmaker to experiment and turns them to be an auteur of cinema. And since the budget of a state financed film is remarkably lesser than industry finance, these filmmakers have to be creative within their budget.
A reference to one of the darlings you slaughtered….. That shot of the cityscape of Kochi filmed from a helicopter, that doesn’t serve purpose to the film narrative – delete it!
Introducing a totally different genre also brings out the change in characterization. How has that been approached? Since I was educated this way, nothing
In your creative space, how important are factors like music, craft or even the appearance of posters in attracting the viewers? Film is an audio-visual experience. Even during the days of silent films, they used to play live or recorded music while screening. Any visual paired with the right music can induce an emotion or essence if used expertly. Music is the stronger part of the audio-visual experience. This is because
What made you break one of Dogme 95 rules? The film was framed against a lesser-known urban city scape of India. So the only way we could induce the “Indian essence” was by adding music, distinctly recognizable to them as ‘Indian’. But when we broke that Dogme 95 rule, we did it in style. London based radio D.J. Sharnita Athwal, the music supervisor for Karma Cartel, assembled an outstanding selection of underground music from British-Indo artists like Adi Sharma, Juttla, Shammi Pithia, Rita Morar, Nitesh Batra and Praveen Achary. “It’s not just a film but an experience,” In the end what’s your view on how the viewers should approach the film? We had held a preview screening in London. The audience at the London preview

screening had a mix of film-enthusiasts and some of them who came to watch a “Malayalam film” were left wondering how to describe the film. Someone who quoted, ‘It’s not just a film but an experience’, saved the moment and gave us a tagline.
4 years to graduate from the National Film School. So I created a production company (movement) called Fookdat Productions and promised to make my first feature film before he graduated from the National Film School – and I did.
Someone who helped to nourish your creativity…… The Internet
What is your opinion on the success of feature films viewership in Kerala? The Kerala film audience goes for movies like how they set out to watch a football or a cricket match. They go to cheer a winning team. And that is why super stars films are doing well. When an Indian pays ‘X’ amount of rupees to sit in a dark hall for 3 hours, he expects someone familiar on the screen to keep his heart warm throughout the film, failing which will only make him infuriated and spread hate.
Your Red carpet experience at the Cannes Film Festival….. Anyone with a decent short film and sufficient cash to fund the travel and accommodation to France for a week can walk the Red Carpet of Cannes Film Festival. LOL!
Have you tried out some Scandinavian food anytime? My wife is Scandinavian.
You did say ‘we are a growing community’. What waits for those who are attracted to join your artistic community? All passion, no pay LOL! Haven’t you named the movement yet?. Soon after graduating from the Film School of Copenhagen, I tried my luck at the National Film School of Denmark. I could not apply further or receive stipend since I held on to my Indian citizenship. But at the same time, one of my Danish classmates from the film school got in. It takes

Can we be expecting another unconventional flick sometime soon? You can only expect unconventional flicks from me.
The rules of Dogme 95 filmmaking are so contrary when compared to the sort of film creation we are familiar with. When we chase the latest technologies and innovations of film making, this avant-garde filmmaking movement Dogme 95, restricts the use of technologies and innovations. In Kerala thanks to the ‘Jawan of Vellimala’ team who introduced the Balloon Light Shooting technology; something which is way beyond their principles of filmmaking.
How helpful has travelling been for your career….. I travel less. I shoot in my backyard and edit it in my kitchen (Not kidding).
How do you single out the caliber of an artiste in performing a commercial film and an art film? I always compare them to Bharath Gopy. How tough was it for you to choose the artists for this film? It was very easy. The closest friends of mine for almost 20 years, Suraj Ramakrishnan and Vinay Forrt helped in casting. Both of them have been associated with my filmmaking career in India since 2010. As a director, the genre of movies you don’t much take pleasure in….. The films that neither entertain nor educate.

once knew a man in Bangalore who won the devotion of women through the sheer perfection with which he wielded a cigarette lighter. He had a rack of dozen lighters, which he cleaned and put in order once a week. Before making for his girl, he would select one, fuel it, and put in a new flint, taking care to choose a large and manly one for the tiny, frightened girl or with cigarette case and a slim glass of gin and tonic for the slightly neglected girl standing afar. At precisely the right moment in the cigarette maneuver, fire would dart from his hand. He had trained himself to see a pretty girl feel for a smoke across three platforms, as it were, and to be behind her, flame ready, before the cigarette was at her lips. He was a charmer, so elegant with his lighter that most women went on to believe whatever he said he was. What he was not was a distinguished smoker and neither was I. I quit smoking for the same reasons that many people turn to religion: out of fear and hope. I fear leaving the earth any earlier than need be, for I greatly like it here and would like to remain in excellent physical shape. I cannot say that I felt all that poorly when I smoked. My first cigarette was smoked in the rain; make that my first five or six cigarettes. The brand is not worth mentioning but I and my friend whose name I shouldn’t mention were sixteen. We bought the cigarettes one rainy school-day afternoon. Lighting them in the rain wasn’t easy, and smoking them, when raindrops first blotched, then dampened the paper was no cinch either. My recollection is that we each smoked five or six cigarettes, and then lest it provide incriminating evidence, buried the rest of the pack in his background and planted a questionably tombstone at its head. I remember my friend still lingering there whilst I had already gone in to give it

a silent salute. We can scarcely be said to have enjoyed the cigarettes we did smoke, though neither of us became the least bit sick, as young boys, toward the end of being taught a lesson, are supposed to become the first time they smoke. He and I then both went on, as it turned out, to distinguished non-smoking careers. I can’t help but wonder what went wrong. After quitting cigarettes I suppose, I felt a little less lousy. I coughed less, I ate more heartily, and I breathed more easily at the top of the stairs. Stopping smoking, however, filled me with what I can only call fatness of soul. We met again the other day at a dank yet expensive hotel in Wellington Island, eight years after our first and last smoke and neither of us spoke. I, sunk in despondency, had nothing to say. He had already used up his profanity watching the recent Manchester United game; besides, the English language was deficient in that it failed to provide words
adequate to his anger. We were non-smokers in a world which demanded the accompaniment of a cigarette for life’s many activities. Coffee without a cigarette seemed unnatural; booze without a cigarette, impossible. A meal required capping off with a smoke, a fine meal with two or three. Emerging from your local tea shop or completing any errand called for a nicotine reward. In a minor crisis – a deadline looming up, an argument, tension of one kind or another and the occasions when nicotine twitch beckoned. But we always carry around a lighter, to be behind you, flame ready, before the cigarette is at your lips. We are the non-smokers that people deserve, but not the ones they need right now. So we don’t light them. Because we don’t need to. Because we are not regular smokers. But we are silent guardians, watchful protectors of smokers. A dark light.

o Chi Minh, a relatively unknown city in Vietnam hit headlines in 2006 when paparazzi went berserk spotting Hollywood couple Brangelina, riding on a motorcycle in downtown making quick trip. Well if that was not all, the couple grabbed more eye balls when they adopted 3-year old Pax from the city to their international clan. So what is it that beckons celebrities who live in ultra luxury pads crave for heavenly seclusion? Well, the best answer can be provided only by the A-listers, we try to find out what makes such exotic destinations a favourite hidden getaway for celebrities. Named after the Vietnamese communist revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh, the city is most attractive to tourists for its preservation of culture that is still largely untouched by the multinational “free-market” franchises. Formerly named Saigon, Ho Chi Minh is located in the south-eastern region of Vietnam.
flights in the country are operated by Vietnam Airlines. Budget airline Jetstar Pacific is providing some much needed competition on several routes, while Vasco flies between HCMC and the Con Dao Islands. Rachel Green “Jurrasic Parka, not Jurrasic Park.”
Gabrielle Solis “I’m here to teach so I am fashionably late.”
The Fashion Forecaster Here’s the fact, we don’t have stylists to dress ourselves every day. It’s a natural tendency that whenever you watch a sitcom you tend to associate with a character and naturally their dressing style is something appealing to you. The top timeless looks that have ruled the fashion wardrobe are Rachel Green from FRIENDS, Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl, Gabrielle Solis from Desperate Housewives, and finally Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City.
The Sitcom Lessons for Dummies What an irony we call the television the Idiot Box. There’s been a recent roar that sitcoms tend to rot our brains and our reading capacity has tremendously diminished. Strictly some lessons that you ought to learn!
Text Atheena Wilson
The Screen Scrutinizer Ever thought of secretly penning down action thriller and never had inkling? It’s obvious with shows such as Prison Break, Breaking Bad, Arrow all give insights to realms you could never explore and gives you an idea on how to frame a solid story, characters, and settings. It helps you look into other technical aspects such as visuals, sound editing, cinematography, stunt coordination and even music. Grey’s Anatomy was not greatly popularized for its drama but also for its music. Of course, there’s a difference between stealing an idea and being inspired.

The Ice Breaker! You’ll be surprised to know that sitcoms have the catchiest dialogues that regularly update your humour. Many shows add a twist on the general current affairs, thus you only enjoy the humour if you know your current affairs. Ever thought that The Simpsons was a no brainer, think twice it’s humour selling on hot cakes. You’ll be surprised to know that you would soon be cracking and perhaps even learning to make impressions. You could even make funny statements with memes or mimicry! Quirks of famous characters such as Alan Shore from Boston Legal and Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother, and the natural sarcasm of Chandler Bing from Friends, Tracy Gordan from 30 Rock and finally Sheldon Copper from the Big Bang Theory .

There are the Oscars for movies, the Grammy’s for music and then comes the Emmy’s for all the shows. Just as these days people tend to appreciate the art in watching movies, you could also develop this taste for shows. Learn to analyse and keep up your observant skills, this suddenly justifies your need to watch an array of sitcoms. Nothing stops your creativity; you can be a blogger or even host shows providing comments and reviews.
We know that all work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Earlier, in some offices they used to play Laurel and Hardy at the day’s end of work, just to have a laugh. Sitcoms provide entertainment and most importantly widen your scope of imagination. It may be a lazy ticket to get out of a book and tends to lead to an addiction. At the end the most important lesson, is that enjoying sitcoms is not a crime but rotting your brain is the no brainer choice of your fault.

Howaito dē, Japan In Japan, Valentine’s Day is typically observed by girls and women presenting chocolate gifts (especially handmade) to boys or men, as an expression of love but it doesn’t stop there exactly after a month (March 14) boys reciprocate their love by giving gifts to their lady love. It is also observed in South Korea and Taiwan.

Qi Xi, China The country celebrates two Valentine’s Days, one being the commercially recognized February 14th and the other that falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, known as “Qi Xi,” or “Magpie Festival,” or “The Night of Sevens.” The legend is that a young cowherd and a weaver girl, who happened to be the daughter of the Goddess, met on earth, fell in love and married. But when the Goddess learned of her daughter’s marriage, she ordered her return to heaven. The cowherd followed his beloved which angered the Goddess who cast a river into the sky, creating the Milky Way, separating the two lovers. But once a year, all the magpies from around the world would fly up into the Milky Way forming a bridge over the river so that two lovers could meet and reunite. Angelito, Dominican Republic

The company plans to get Elios rolling off the lines next year at the former General Motors Shreveport Assembly and Stamping Plant in Louisiana. Its engine has been updated to a 55-hp 0.9-liter inline three-cylinder. Other specifications include the 84-mpg highway fuel economy, 100-mph (161 km/h) top speed and 672-mile (1,081 km) range; remain the same, as does the projected price of US$6,800. SwatchMate Cube – The Cool colour detector The SwatchMate Colour detector lets you capture any colour under the sun and reproduce it on a graphics program or even in a paint store. To use the Cube you just hold it up to the colored surface that you want to copy, and press the top of the device. An internal spherical light source illuminates the surface in a controlled sequence, with the reflected light being picked up by an integrated color sensor. After a few seconds, once the Cube’s flashing red indicator light turns to green, you know that the task is complete. The device will immediately send the color to your paired iOS or Android smartphone, or to a program like PhotoShop, although it can also store up to 20 colors in its own onboard memory.

You may spend your first Bitcoin in 2014 There are plans to regulate the cryptocurrency in 2014, which could risk alienating current buyers and causing a drop in users -- but regulation would make it far less risky to use, and therefore more palatable to the general public. The good news is many vendors including Tesla motors, overstock, Ok cupid, wordpress, reddit, Zynga, etc. has accepted Bitcoin as alternate currency, which gives a notion that this trend is to remain for some time to come.Bitcoin is controversial because its constantly fluctuating value makes it unreliable as a currency. One BTC (Bitcoin) is worth INR 51,418 as of Jan 14th 2014.The Silk Road, an online black market shut down in 2013, only accepted bitcoin as payment.

B100 smartphone with rugged characteristics B100 phone from Caterpillar unveiled last month is for extremes, which means, this phone can take all sort of abuses like a wide extreme of temperatures ranging from -25ºC to 55°, immersion in water and a fall from 1.8 meters (almost 6 ft). Its physical number pad is designed so it can be operated by gloved fingers, plus the phone features a noise-canceling microphone. How was it for the winner of ‘Mammootty the Best Actor Award’ to share screen space with superstar Mohanlal in ‘Drishyam’? For me it was a dream come true and also a learning experience to work with Lalettan. It was great seeing the enthusiasm he brings to the set which was simply admirable. In acting what do you consider as a mistake? An actor becoming over confident and he starts to think ‘Do I need to work on my acting skills further?’ One thing you wouldn’t do onscreen….. I wouldn’t mind doing anything. Characters you aspire to act upon…… I always want to perform different characters that give me a personal challenge to conquer the character and also to develop myself as a versatile actor. Future projects…. ‘Balyakalasakhi’ starring Mammootty and Isha Talwar. Your girlfriend catches you red-handed with another gal. What would be the trick you adopt to get off the messy triangle? I might come up with some cheesy excuse. For sure I know, it’s not going to take me long to walk on eggshells.

RED FM’s little Santas’ woo Kochiites One person who is eagerly awaited by the children during a chilly cold night in the month of December is Santa Claus and his big bag full of goodies for the little ones. So, during Christmas, RED FM invited kids in the city to make the most of the festival and to paint the town in ‘RED’ n White. On December 28th, RED FM celebrated RED Kid Papa contest at Oberon Mall with loads of fun and entertainment. The kids got to celebrate Christmas with RED FM RJs, who made the event all the more exciting and fun. Everyone including our celebrity guests Vinay Forrt and child artists of the movie Monkey Pen were awestruck when children of various age groups displayed their talents and came dressed in various attires. But the whole show was stolen by a one year old girl who came dressed as Santa. Other inspiring and interesting characters who came on stage were a King, comic character Luttapi, a beggar and Shakuntala. The judges of the event fashion guru Lukman and model Asha Joseph had a tough time choosing the winners, as every child was a winner in his/her own way. The best part of the event was that every time a child came on stage, the crowd encouraged them with loud applause and the children too walked the ramp with great aplomb. The show ended when the children wished Happy New Year to the spectators who had come to the event. With a smile on every ones’ face, the onlookers said that it was the best way to bid a good bye to the year 2013.

Quessadilla
What makes you stand out as a chef? It comes from the heart and it should never be taken as a profession. Cooking is a challenge to always refine and that’s what makes a good chef. I see food as a sculpture made by hand – both needs lot of minute detailing and takes time. How does your personality reflect in your food? Every meal has a character, simple things as how much it’s grilled, the type of sauce used and even glazed wine. It easily shows off the individuality of a chef. As you mentioned earlier of character of food, how much of you do you see of yours in the signature dish? My signature dish is Herb crust king Fish Nicoise and Pineapple Basil Salsa. It’s well seasoned with herbs and has a wide range of flavours, especially with the twist of the salsa. I am health conscious, and it reflects in the meal as it has a lot of mineral and retained proteins from the way it has been cooked. Most of the Indian style of cooking involves over cooking the meat which lead to protein loss. The meal calls out for relaxation; it can be enjoyed as a light supper with white wine. My journey also reflects in my meal, working with Italian cuisine for seven years, and then I was given an opportunity to work in a Mediterranean restaurant. Enjoying cruising, I visited Greece and fell in love with their cuisine. I was inspired by the ocean drift.
Mascarpone Bavaroise
Is there a reason you are comfortable with fish? Kochi is an influence, and fish has the way it has to be handled. It’s very delicate, when you under cook or over cook the taste is lost. Your view on trends of cooking... I don’t like the fusion trend much. It’s important to retain its authenticity. Giving the right food is a master of art. It’s a global village; chefs are making a mark on television, your opinion? What’s in the kitchen, you can show but you can’t taste. It’s still male driven and women are still focused on desserts. The profile of your clients... Usually, there are so many global travellers especially Arabs who enjoy the Mediterranean cuisine.
Chermoula Prawn
Quickies If your kitchen was on fire which ingredient will you save? My team What’s the one dish you’re grateful the world discovered? Alfredo pasta Your laziest and easiest breakfast... Sunny Side Up Who cooks the most at home? My wife If you could uncover the recipe of a famous meal, it would be? Baklava - baked pastry stuffed with nuts and sweets, the Greeks and Turks still fight over this recipe.
How is Kerala’s culinary trend slowly changing? Kerala is slowly taking its course, but in some cities such as Kochi it’s going faster. Yet I’ll have to say international food in Kerala is still the third option, while Chinese food takes the second place.
Who would you serve your signature dish to? My wife
The meals that defines you... Nice Shellfish, red meat and dessert with a lot of fruits.
A country apart from India that amazes you with its cuisine... Italy
Your personal recommendations... Quessadilla, Mascarpone Bavaroise Chermoula Prawn.
A twist to a famous Indian dish... Broccoli and Thoran
The timeless dish you have to serve anytime, anywhere? Pastachio - a famous Greek dish
An adjective you would use to describe your food WOW! 2014 FEBRUARY

Wedding Wedding Jewellery
f
rom the plain enamel work of yesteryears, gold jewellery has evolved in numerous ways. But whatever are the demands of the contemporary society, jewellery inspired from Indian culture and traditions will always be in fashion. Even today’s youngsters accept the fact that all without a dash of traditional gold on the wedding day would look incomplete. The traditional accessories which have been carrying on for the generations now, still manage to look beautiful. Let’s have a sneak peek into the traditional Indian bridal jewellery, their contemporary forms and tips on how to look trendy on your D-day.
Traditional Wedding Jewellery around India A traditional Indian bride typically wears 16 kinds of adornments (the solah sringaar)Maang tika on the fore head, hair braid accessories, ear rings or jhumkas, nathani or nose ring, neck wear in the form of ranihaar or choker, kamarbandh or waist belt, baajubandh or arm band, bangles, finger rings, anklets, tie rings etc are the popular ones. A special love for traditional gold jewellery prevails all across India. The popular
traditional jewellery associated with South India is the temple jewellery, while the North is known for its ethnic jadau and kundan works. Mayur and golap designs in beaten gold are a hot favourite in Bengal, while for Maharashtra it is gold jewellery with paisley motif. Different elements like rava, veni, jadau, stamp work, filigree etc give an idea as to how the preferences differ with respect to region. For a typical Rajasthani or Gujarati bride, the indispensables are arm bands, maangtikas or chutti, meenakari ( enameled ornaments), and kundan designs (a kind of royal stone jewellery ), a typical South Indian bride wears gold hair ornaments all the way down to the knees, waist belts called odiyanam, armlets called vanki and main neck wear called manga
mala.
Tradition with a Twist Heritage ethnic jewellery plays a vital role in influencing designs for the present jewellery scenario. Heavy neckpieces made in traditional designs are making a huge come back as designer jewellery. So the jadau and kundan which exists in particular hues and enamelling with a distinct flavour, has been made contemporary to go with something ethnic or a western

gown. Similarly in temple jewellery, the motifs of mounds and domes have been evolved into oxidized gold jewellery in contemporary format. Bold pieces with a retro-cum-antique design are also very hot this season. There has also been an increasing demand for white gold, black gold, pink gold or even a mix of two or more of these. The transformations have happened not only in terms of design, but also in weight range. Old designs in light weight are affordable and therefore very much in demand.

• It is advisable for not to have both the ensemble and jewellery to be too heavy. A heavy ensemble with light jewellery or heavy jewellery with light ensemble works well and lends a canvas to jewellery. • If it is a day wedding, it is advisable
Tips for your Jewellery Purchase • If the attire has golden hues or kasavu, then traditional gold goes with it. If it is a western gown or a saree with a silver ember, then white gold or platinum compliments it well. • If the entire outfit is western, gold jewellery with fusion designs can be worn. • Mix and matching jewellery with attires and modern pieces has become a major trend. • One may opt for a heavy set of necklace or ear rings and team it up

Wedding Wedding Jewellery to wear light jewellery as too much of it can make a bride look garnish and gaudy. • Thematic wedding should have jewellery matching the theme. Every Indian bride has an inherent traditional self to her persona. So a colourful and creative mix of the traditional and contemporary will be a great idea. Brides today also focus on their individual taste and style that may or may not differ from tradition. A careful mix of the eternal tradition and the eclectic modern is what makes every bride unique and universal at the same time.
Even today’s youngsters accept the fact that all without a dash of traditional gold on the wedding day would look incomplete. The traditional accessories which have been carrying on for the generations now, still manage to look beautiful. Traditional Adornments of Kerala Brides Kerala Christian: A traditional Christian bride would look complete by adorning a heavy gold ear ring called Kunukku or Mekkamothiram, the necklace called Ottezhapathakkam and kappu bangles. But today, Kerala Christian brides prefer minimalistic designs, white gold and diamond studded single statement pieces go well with their gowns and white / off white saree. Kerala Hindu: The Hindu brides of Kerala have many statement pieces especially the neckpieces, which are still in great demand among brides of today, irrespective of caste, as it symbolizes typically Keralite. Popular among them are Kaasu mala, manga maala, elakka thali, palakka mala, mulla mottu maala, arasilla thali, kuzhal mala, padakka thali, gaja mala and more. Kerala Muslim: Jhimki, an all time favourite of all Keralites, originates from Muslim tradition. Other popular adornments of a Muslim bride includes, Aalochana mala, padi mala, chakrakanni mala, thari mala, ear rings like alikathu, pachakallu, hair ornaments like mudipoo, nettipattam, matti, bangles like thol vala, thari vala etc

Is he really ‘into’ you? Wondering if he genuinely cares for you, take a peek into your guys mind and find out if all the efforts he has been taking are straight from his heart
f
alling in love is easy but finding out if he is the right one for you is tricky. You both share a crackling chemistry and sizzling moment together but still somewhere are you worried if he would be there for you in the long run. Take the quiz that would help you to see if he is real. You ask him if he can spend time with you because you have been feeling lonely lately He cancels all plans and comes right over. He tells you he will be right over after visiting a friend. He tells you that you are being ridiculous and shouldn’t feel lonely. You lost something very special to you. He says he’s sorry and asks if there is anything he can do for you. He helps you look for it until he gets tired of looking, then goes, and does

something else. He tells you that you are always misplacing things and it is bound to show up. Your boss offers you a promotion doubling your salary that requires you to move to another state. He is thrilled and starts looking for a place for both of you. He understands that this is a great opportunity and tells you to take it but says that he can’t let go of his connections where you live now. He tells you that you can’t take it because he is not moving anywhere. If you told him that you went to lunch with a male co-worker, what would his reaction be? He would be happy that you are having lunch with a friend. He would look hurt and may even say that he feels jealous but he wouldn’t prevent you from going. He would demand you not to have lunch
with the male friend.
Scoring system He truly cares for you! You can breathe a sigh of relief because you chose all of the responses that indicate he deeply cares for you. A wake -up call is definitely in order for your guy. He spends a lot of time for himself. Try a few kind gestures and maybe he will get the hint to return the favour. Your guy seems just too much into himself. Move on to a new guy who appreciates what a great catch you are.
