share our experiences

Moving Ahead Stylishly ome 2014 we are gearing up to execute one of our dream projects which has been nurtured from the inception of the magazine. FWD Life Style Award will be launched in the coming months. The precursor to the event was the cover launch party which has been taking place successfully for more than a year now. The Style awards will have varied categories from people to places, all together some 20 awards. The nomination will be thrown open to the public where potential candidate can be nominated on the website dedicated for the same. Dynamic voting will take place on FB and the nominees with the maximum number of votes in each category will be short listed for the final awards by an elite jury panel consisting of eminent personalities. Unlike most other voting systems there will be prizes for voters too. The grand finale will be a black tie affair at a leading 5 star property in Kochi. Gastronomy acquires a different dimension when two French siblings bring the finest in French food and wine from Loire Valley to an evening of sophistication and taste.

uliette and Marie Monmousseau, the fifth generation Monmousseaus from the premium French winery, Bouvet Ladubay presented the Loire Affair at the ITC Gardenia in Bangalore and at ITC Grand Central in Mumbai. The spotlight for the evening was on the Loire cuisine and wine conversations. The guests were welcomed with Bouvet Cocktails and Bouvet Brut. To complement the bespoke culinary spread by Marie, were wines from Bouvet Ladubay and Four Seasons Barrique Reserve, paired to perfection by Juliette and Abhay Kewadkar, Chief Winemaker and Business Head, USL. Abhay Kewadkar and ITC Hotels co-hosted this exclusive soiree for the connoisseurs of fine dining in the city. Marie, a celebrated gourmet chef took the guests on a Loire journey of discovering exotic flavors with Fillet of red mullet in escabeche, paired with Bouvet Brut. The Bouvet Brut is a sparkling white wine, which has a dominant fruity bouquet with white flowery aromas of honeysuckle and acacia. The mains served were Le Choux Farci (Cabbage leaf stuffed with cep mushrooms,

The meal ended with a delectable Tarte aux fraises (short crust pastry with fresh strawberries, cream and elderflower liqueur) and the Gâteau de Marie ( soft chocolate cake with sesame seeds and milk jam) paired with Bouvet Brut Rose, which with its fruity flavour was the perfect ending to the delicious meal. Abhay Kewadkar, Director, Four Seasons Wines said, “Four Seasons wines have always been synonymous with the concept of food and wine pairing, associating with international events such as the Le Concours de l’Inde des Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs 2013 by Chaine des Rotisseurs, Asian Junior Chefs Challenge by MasterChefs of Great Britain, bespoke events by Michelin Star Chefs from France and so on. Our consumers expect innovation in complementing and contrasting flavours of food with our wines. A luxurious evening such as this, with a range of award winning wines from Bouvet Ladubay and

Four Seasons Barrique Reserve is only an apt reminder for those who appreciate the craft and the finesse behind wines. Gourmet delicacies from Loire paired with Bouvet and Four Seasons, have created the perfect symphony this evening.” At Bouvet-Ladubay, “Excellence” is the motto and this is reflected in the taste and quality of wines. With more than 160 years’ experience in wine making, Bouvet-Ladubay has turned this craft into a fine art. Bouvet’s oenologists track the wines from the onset of the harvesting season to the point where the bottles are labelled. This finely tuned operation has won Bouvet-Ladubay more than 300 awards over the last 30 years alone, helping it build its reputation as one of the premier wines of the world. Bouvet Ladubay is now enjoyed in 45 countries and is a subsidiary of United Spirits limited. Oris Aquis Depth Gauge

Aquis Depth Gauge lets one feel the real gauge by measuring depth of water by allowing water to enter the timepiece. Oris that is always known for professional-grade divers’ watches uses the principle of the Boyle Mariotte law in the Aquis Depth Gauge. The watch’s sapphire crystal, which is a full 50% thicker than an average one, has a channel milled into its side that runs counterclockwise to the dial and stops between 1 and 2 o’clock. A small hole at 12 o’clock leads to the channel, while a rubber gasket seals the join between crystal and case, as the diver descends wearing the watch; the surrounding water pressure compresses the air inside the channel and allows water to seep in through the inlet at 12 o’clock. The edge of the channel changes from light gray to dark gray to differentiate between water and compressed air, indicating the depth. Technical characteristics Movement: Automatic Oris movement 733 with date window at 6 o’clock Case and strap: Stainless steel case, water –resistant to 50 bar/500 meters unidirectional revolving top ring with black ceramic inlay and minute scale. uch has been said about her performances. A lot has been written about her beauty. Time flies when one gazes her eyes, eyes that make anyone wobbly kneed. It has been almost two decades since Aishwarya Rai won the Femina Miss India crown, followed by the Miss World title. But little has changed over the years when it comes to her ethereal beauty and motherhood has only added charm to her beauty making her an eternal diva. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is ruling the roost when it comes to endorsing classy brands. And what’s astonishing is that she is considered to be a reliable face to represent those brands, despite not having a single film on her work roster. But looks like Ash has done something right (in her career and in her past life) to win the implicit trust of brand-makers. She seems to enjoy lording over the

m

Juggling professional and personal has always been part of my life, its not something new post marriage and parenthood. I always make it a point to travel with my daughter established Bollywood ladies. And now, as she is effortlessly putting her stamp on bigfat-money-minting-brands, we wonder how

she’s doing it all. One of her strategies is, we think, to choose her brands very carefully. Ash is not just making mature decisions, but also opting for products and endorsements that complement her age and her subtle yet classy style total in line with the brand’s tag ‘ elegance is attitude. Now that Ash is playing her cards right with her amazingly deft hands, we are glad the former Miss World has very smartly created a space for herself in the advertisement arena. And since she’s ageing gracefully, we think that’s one more reason for her fans and high-end brands to be even more impressed by the beautiful lady…The former Miss World, went all stylish for the recent ad of Longines. She was seen wearing a fascinator, posing alongside a horse. The ad gives a very royal feel and complements the classic look of the watch. The actor still has a lot of kilos to lose, but the best part is that her lower portion is very strategically cropped in the ad. And the diva-ish attitude Ash brings to the poster is

commendable – the black and white effect adds to the whole elite, classic look. Ash had also posed in a saree for one of the watch’s print endorsements in the past. And we must say she does equal justice to both the desi and the la-di-da Western statements. For Aishwarya, her association with God’s own Country began even before big endorsement deals. The lady reminisced about her first visit to the State, “Coming to Trivandrum brought back memories. In fact, when I started my journey in the film industry, my first film was with Mani Ratnam. I came on my very first day of shooting here. I landed in Trivandrum,” she said. AshRatnam combination go back a long way, so does director Mani Ratnam love affair with the spectacular Athirapally waterfalls in Kerala. Mani Ratnam has shot three of his blockbuster movies in the picturesque locales. Aishwarya’s cinematic debut, ‘Iruvar’ in 1997 directed by him was shot in Athirapally. They worked again ten years later in ‘Guru’ and Aishwarya simply stole hearts with the mesmerizing song ‘Barso Re’ in which the gorgeous lady ‘tulip’ danced like a merry peacock in the rain behind the waterfalls. The same year she got married to her Guru co-star Abhishek Bachchan and the powerhouse pair joined their favourite director Mani Ratnam in 2010 for ‘Raavan’ that was shot in the abundant wilderness of the Sholayar Range, with a view of the magnificent Athirapally waterfalls. Raavan that was simultaneously shot in Tamil and Hindi was said to be a modern interpretation of the epic Ramayana. Ash says the story of ‘Raavan’ was narrated to her while she was getting drenched for the song Barso Re, and the water connection of Athirapally continued while filming Raavan as well. No wonder with so many wonderful memories she has with Kerala, the actress is keen to keep her bond with ‘Gods own Country’, on her latest visit to the State, Aishwarya was accompanied by her darling daughter Aaradhya for the very first time and for this very reason the visit holds a special importance for her.

Glam Up With Haircuts ‘N’ Styles Suiting Your Personality Ooze out oomphness and elegance with trendy haircuts and hair colours. Let your hair down and get ready to set the New Year party floor on fire. Tomboy You might be the kind who is not confined by the chains of feminity but horrified at the thought of makeup or the ‘she’ who wants to be one of the guys. If so, are you ready to play with your styling and push the boundaries of what you would normally try. An androgynous crop is one that allows you to try some chic and hip effects or a super-soft pixie with a dab of styling cream, misted with shine spray can be the other try. Use a strong mousse and finish it with some firm holding hairspray for a glamorous look. Probably Emma Watson and Halle Berry might be your fashion icons. Mild and Meek Your reserved personality will subscribe you to simplicity. And so you are at ease all the time to have a cut in the plainest and most practical of styles. This doesn’t mean that your sense of style is dull or unattractive, but rather, you don’t feel the call for to embellish certain aspects of her personality to suit her appearance. Though your personality is slightly in tune with the traits of a boyish girl, a well-cut bob or a scarlette cut for the short hair and for the long tress; an elegant classy hairdo with embellishments will be a better alternative. Creative and Artistic Experimentation, uniqueness and creativity are in your blood. By your work, your ways of life you would’ve proved it, but when it comes to proving to yourself with your hair; how good are you? creative and artistic women are likely to get away with more in the style department and tend to make a statement like a razored, punked-out cut or a bold statement.

For the Fashionista Wake up the Barbie in you with curled long locks to create an aura of ‘devil may care’ or with Punk hairstyles or side-swept bangs with loose waves, mini-bouffant with tiny braids. Gone are the nights where you see party animals going for shabby put-ups with bobby pins, a fashion age-old trend that resembles a bird’s nest. Now it’s all about portraying your nature; fun loving and the extrovert ‘you’. As far as possible let loose the long bangs to cascade down your shoulders, especially women who have a narrow forehead. Having said so, box-faced must completely stay away from bangs as it will shorten the face, reinforcing the jaw.

trends hairstyle The modern mullet…..love it or hate it Mullets are currently climbing to the forefront of fashion. And one among the fashion icons to carry it is supermodel Lindsey. Watching it in movies we might have fancied having this hair style someday but with a stepped back mindset not confident about how to wear it in the real world. If you’re new to mullets, they’re softly razored, side-sweeping fringe, feathered with shoulder-length ends that give an amazingly casual look without styling and a rebellious appearance when styled to the utmost.

One sort of a grown out bob.... Clavicut, the easy-to-wear and ‘easy-tocare-for’ hair cut is the new buzzword for mid-length, in-between hair, long bobs, and shoulder-length styles. As it appears to give bangs on the clavical bones. This cut retains strands of long layers along with an addition of a couple of shorter and softer bangs around the jaw to frame your face. It’s a perfect cut for easy styling options and a great base for occasional extensions. With this cut, a daily blow-dry or curling can make your hair look a little clumsy.

Get Bolder With Stunning Celebrity Hairdos

The stylish are doing it. Going short, that is with their hair. This above-theshoulder’ dos are sure to inspire those who had been noticing the length of your tress deteriorating and its ends tapering. Protein shampoos and hair oils can do miracles to your pig-tail but not in a short span. So here is something smarter and sensible you can try out for a fresh look this New Year. Adding colour to the pixie….. As we all know, the pixie-pop crop is back by not just being simply bare. Check out Beyonce and her pixie crop snap on Twitter. What makes it striking is not her newly cropped hair, but the blonde colour that we are fixated on. Now when it comes to you and me, instead of waiting for a crowd to follow this makeover step by step, go in for this two bold changes at the same time as it’s easier to pull off such a dramatic shift in hairstyle.

he is hardly a month old but is already creating waves in the yachting circuit for her brilliant sporty and elegant style. This bella ragazza comes from the virtuous Italian shipbuilding and boat building company Benetti based in Viareggio, Livorno and Fano. The FB502 M/Y “Panthera” is the second yacht in the 500s series. Constructed at Benetti's Livorno boatyard, the 500-series yachts are 100% aluminium, 47 meters long and 8.8 meters wide. Panthera’s hull geometry ensures superior performance as well as significant stability while underway; noise and vibrations are almost completely eliminated, for enhanced comfort even at higher speeds. All this makes “Panthera” a fast and com-

fortable yacht with a style that reflects the refined personality of the Boat Owner who has commissioned a contemporary yacht featuring timeless elegance. Clean, soaring lines and large tinted oval windows go perfectly with the metallic silver colour of the exterior, silver shades being the dominant colours of the “Panthera. On the exterior, the teak detailing (traditionally black) is gray; and the interiors have a sophisticated combination of lighter and darker gray tones. A key feature highlighting the contemporary and carefully thought out aesthetic of the FB502 is given by the large fashion photos hung throughout the yacht’s main areas; whether in black and white or colour, large or small, framed or unframed, the images portray the magnetic feminine allure of gorgeous international models and

actresses, adding even more glamour to this sophisticated yacht. Benetti architects and designers worked very closely with the Owner and his staff, so there was no need to engage any other external designer. The owner's representative had clear visions regarding design and realised her ideas with determination. The work was largely one of subtraction, of eliminating excesses and ostentation; the result is a style which suggests pure beauty under the banner of simplicity, something far beyond the merely fashionable. The FB502 has four decks: lower, main, upper, and sun deck. The lower deck is dedicated to the guest cabins. The VIP cabin is amidships with a double bed at full-beam, walk-in closet, and ensuite bathroom. There are two additional double-bed cabins, each with

private bathroom. All bathrooms have refined finishes in different Bisazza mosaics. Towards the bow and with a separate entrance, there are four twin-bed cabins for the crew. The mechanical room is astern of the VIP cabin; and even further astern is the garage which accommodates both a tender and jet ski, with a large door opening onto a marvellous stern swimming platform providing nearly 10 m2 for beach chairs, shower, and a highly original custom designed trampoline. The main deck is a semi wide body. Climbing aboard astern, the elegant exterior saloon functions as a lobby onto the main saloon and is tastefully furnished with custom pieces from major Italian design companies. The fabrics and lamps are by Armani Casa as is the large, ten-person dining table, and the chairs surrounding it are by B&B.

The Grandeur of Regal Rajasthani wedding Charms Kerala A traditional Rajasthani wedding is all about opulence, imagine if the beautiful bride is a Rajputana princess then the event has to be out of this world Text Dhanya Menon Photos Parinaya wedding planners

he marriage between Kerala cricketer Sreeshant and Bhuvaneshwari Kumari, from the royal family of Jaipur opened up for Keralites, the splendor of Royal Rajasthan traditions. Sreeshant tied the knot on the dawn of 12th December at Guruvayur temple followed by a Rajasthani wedding and reception at Hotel Le Meridien, Kochi the same day evening. The pre and post wedding ceremonies were a splurge on authentic Rajasthani traditions,

which was totally new to Keralites. FWD takes a sneak-peek:

Pre Wedding Events Around 200 people from Rajasthan accompanied Bhuvaneshwari Kumari to Kochi on 9th December and were put up at Hotel Crowne Plaza. As it was Sreeshant’s father’s birthday on 9th, a surprise party was arranged for the evening which also served as “meeting the in-laws and the family”

occasion. On 10th December, the whole place was decorated in Rajasthani theme for Sangeeth, with its traditional trimmings like music and dance by a bevy of colourfully decked up maidens accompanying the bashful bride. The Sangeeth started at around 8pm and went on till 2am. The whole place resembled a true royal palace just created for ‘Princess Bhuvaneshwari’ with everything from decor, musicians,

sweets, savouries and even the richly embroidered costumes of the dancers. On the 11th, there was a Pooja for the family members. Wedding Ceremonies

The Mandap A Rajasthani wedding ritual was held on 12th evening at Hotel Le Meridian at the traditional Pheras a (flower-decked Mandap) built near the boat jetty lawn, for 150

wedding Sreesanth wedding invitees. There was an exact representation of the North Indian colours in the Mandap, especially the burnished copper pots that formed the four pillars. There were 2 high platforms to one side, like a victory stand, which held the deities, Lakshmi- Narayan and Ganpathy, all covered with flowers. Seven yellow roses were arranged around the deities along with shinning brass pots of water. Down below was Varundeva, flanked by the representation of the Star constellation, The Seven Sisters on the right and ‘fore fathers’ on the left. The stand above this had the “navgraha”. All these were made of pulses, long-grained rice and paddy. At the ends of this were bowls full of dry fruits, royal fruits depicting fertility and a dry coconut kernel in the center. The homakund in the centre was adorned with colourful rangoli. Four Pundits came from Jaipur to officiate the rites!

Baraarth The venue came alive with the arrival of ‘Baaraath’. Sreeshanth wore a highly embellished Sherwani with the customary sword and colourful turban, astride a white horse covered with embroidered satin and led by equally attired persons, stepped daintily to the tunes of Baaraath Band along the red carpet. The procession was led by an elephant adorned in traditional Kerala style. The groom’s horse was followed by 4 horses (two white and two black) and fireworks lined the way. As the Baaraath neared to the Pheras Mandap, the groom was showered with rose petals and was received by 15 maidens in traditional Rajasthani costumes and a few older women from the bride’s side. The groom then stepped onto a beautifully inlaid peedh, and was welcomed to the bride’s “household” with a Tilak and Aarti. Tender coconut was offered as a welcome drink, which lent the Kerala touch. The bride’s arrival was announced by Dhol and soon Bhuvaneshwari stepped into the spot light in a deep red traditional

bridal wear embroidered with precious stones and pearls. Her brothers were on either side with their swords held over her in a gesture of protection. It was truly spell binding with the fireworks, drums and the heavily decked bride and family making it an occasion that people down South would never forget. Then the Pundits took over. And for the next hour, everything was solemn with the chanting of slogas and the auspicious ‘Pheras’ when the couple went around the holy fire seven times.

Reception The wedding ceremonies were followed by reception that was attended by 1500 plus guests at the pool side lawn which turned a wonderland of lights, colours and music. The wide stage was bathed in a pink glow with red highlights and banks of red carnations, roses and orchids. The backdrop design was very subtle with a touch of Rajasthani charm in its gold bordered arches with crystal curtains, Indian floral motifs lending a royal look. The focal point was a massive crystal chandelier that twinkled in all its glory, making the stage the ideal setting for a royal wedding. A North Indian village festival with fairground atmosphere was created with the stalls. There was a puppeteer, bangle seller girls giggling happily and the Paan wallah who many flavours for all paan lovers. Each guest was made to feel special with chairs covered in white satin with large golden bows. There were two open stages on either sides of the main stage: one set for the violin maestro Balabhasker and his team and the other for the performing art forms. It was a rare treat to see Kerala’s own Kathakali, Theyyam and Mohiniyaattam performing together on the same stage though it was not the exact traditional performance. This was followed by Rajasthani folk dancers’ performance and breath taking gymnastics on a single pole. The wide pool was lit by slow changing colour lights. Apart from this colour play,

there were around six search lights sweeping the entire area as well as the sky for kilometers ahead. The colourful wedding procession was greeted by the soulful strains of the Shehanai. En route, the couple were offered sweet paan and blessed by the bearer of the sweet, a portly guy with a shiny turban and handle-bar moustache. They were escorted by their family to the stage and after

a short rest with refreshments they were ready to receive the wedding guests who had lined up patiently downstage. Well, I know what you are thinking about: the food. It was sumptuous. Most of the popular veg dishes across India were available at the counter, with plenty of green salads, fruits, sweets and puddings from around the globe.

Confluence of Styles A contemporary abode with ample open and private spaces accentuated with several innovative design elements Text Dhanya Menon Photos Increations, Kochi 70

JANUARY 2014

Quick Read arm wooden interiors, a classic appeal and a blend of various styles make this house a delightful one. Located at Bangalore, it is owned by a Kerala based corporate group and is designed by Sreejith Padangalil of Increations Designs & Contractors, Kochi. “The client wanted the house to be classy and elegant, have the look and feel of a contemporary and a very spacious and relaxing appeal” says Sreejith. This house boasts of cosy interiors, sleek and trendy designs, which are backed by an all pervading aesthetic sense. The décor is both soothing to the senses as well as interesting and is very much in sync with the designer’s design sensitivities and aesthetics. Each room here not only provides soothing pool view and nature view, but is an oasis of privacy and tranquility in a city starved of open spaces. The first thing which strikes as you enter this space is the long range of view one gets of the living room which has tall double height walls to enhance the visual effect further. The long horizontal pool view from one end and the sneak peek into the external greens from the other end creates a special resort or holiday home ambience. The place has a relaxing ambience with warm interiors that immediately puts you in a great mood. The horizontal design of the rooms, horizontal cutouts with diffused lighting, along with the empty gaps facilitates an extended feel of the space. This home is a kind of synthesis of different styles. The design influenced from various places is seen in the wooden flooring, façade windows, open kitchen etc although an European influence is all pervading. The European charm of this space is enjoyed from the entrance itself. The colour scheme of the house too is in keeping with the overall décor with a lot of earthy colours such as browns, red, pale yellow and milky white. There is a very comfortable mix of contemporary furniture also. The bedrooms are very spacious and are designed elegantly with wooden flooring,

New Year Resolutions

Achieving Goals in Flying Colours Are you among the majority who could not keep last year’s New Year resolution? Know that to change oneself on a fine morning is not possible but by keeping resolutions realistic, simple and flexible nothing is impossible ike most people you too would have perhaps had unfulfilled resolutions made last January. Never mind, there is always a second chance. It is effortless to give up on resolutions just because you managed to convince yourself ‘habits are not subject to change’. We all boast to make changes, but most of us lack discipline to dig our heels in and make them come to pass. Here are some tips on how to make realistic New Year resolutions that wouldn’t be too hard on you.

l

84

JANUARY 2014

Be decisive WHAT-WHY-HOW- to achieve your goal. Persistent focus Evaluate your progress from beginning till its accomplishment. Pat your failures Experiencing failures makes the future’s achievement worthier. Penning goals Write them as reminders in colourful bold letters.

Brushing up resolutions Goals must be at the forefront of your thinking.

Why Resolutions Fail by Feb 1st? Majority of us have seen our friends and relatives beginning their New Year with full enthusiasm. For some it might be to reduce their body weight and so for which they’re up by 5 in the morning or those who wish to quit smoking might be emptying their rooms by discarding cigarette packets and ash trays, purchasing more and more self help books that eventually turns out to be food for termites. Initially they give their ultimate for the goal and so the first two weeks would go by so perfectly. By the month of February, ‘the focused’ begins to backslide and by the following December, they’re back where they started or even further behind than where they were. Everything good or bad has a

reason. Why so many fall short at their goal-setting? What are the secrets behind those who succeed? Firstly never perceive New Year resolutions as a custom for the month of January. When you set your goals, as a goal-keeper you be ready for it with commitment. Secondly lack of planning could be another setback. To stick to resolutions you must be determined and accommodative to change your lifestyle according to your sketch of achieving the goal. Do keep in mind; New Year is not a time to make a bucketful of attempts on extreme makeovers. Thirdly be sensible to set minute, attainable goals throughout the year, rather than extraordinary, overwhelming goals. If you wish to lose some weight it is much easier to follow a plan that says ‘no junk food’ for six weeks instead of starving. In short a vague goal begets vague resolutions.

Resolving Failures of 2013 Find a place where you can sit and reflect. Think about improvements you’d like to have in your life (health, spirituality, family, finances, career, character traits, habits….) Look over your list and see what items are most important to you. Address your problems along with effective realistic solutions. Figure out your priorities and list the resolutions Sit down with your family and close knit friends, discuss your goals for their support in the future. Post copies of resolutions for self analysis. Set a deadline, but don’t give up if something impedes your deadline.

hat moment when creation becomes absolute is when the difference and distinction between the art and the artiste is void . The moment when duality disappears and emerges the work itself speaking for the artiste. Here the creator and the creation is one and the same . The self-consciousness of the mass of humanity encompassing thought, reason, and imagination moves way to cosmic consciousness, an emerging consciousness which is the next stage of human evolution. Responding to every call that excites and awakens your spirit here the individual is one and the same as the universe .Everything that you want, you are already that. discoveries Scientific breakthroughs

Startling Scientific

Discoveries of 2013 2013 was a remarkable year for scientific discoveries. Groundbreaking findings made headlines in the field of Space Science, Medical Science and Anthropology.

Cancer Immunotherapy A type of cancer treatment that directs the body’s own immune system to fight cancer cells has been named as the “breakthrough of the year” by one of the world’s top science journals. Even though the researches are in its early stages it was a groundbreaking scientific achievement. According to the journal Science Cancer immunotherapy is causing a paradigm shift in the way cancer researchers think about treating people with the disease, instead of targeting the tumor itself, cancer immunotherapy harnesses the immune system to fight cancer. This year, trials testing different types of cancer immunotherapy showed promising results, the editors said, hinting at a large potential for the treatment to help patients.

Human Cloning Becomes a Reality After a decade long research, American scientists have effectively produced early embryos and used them as a source of stem cells with a procedure similar to the one that produced “Dolly the sheep”, the first mammal ever to be cloned. Stem cells derived by somatic cell nuclear trans-

fer (SCNT) have the potential to transform into any cell type, such as bone or brain tissue cells. They can be used to treat and help understand a wide range of conditions and health problems. After years of failed attempts, scientists realized that adding a bit of caffeine enabled them to produce stems cells from cloned human embryos.

Olinguito: New carnivorous mammal discovered after 35 years It was a rare discovery in the 21st century and it took more than a decade for scientists to identify a mammal living in the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador. It has been named olinguito and is the first new species of carnivore to be identified in the Western hemisphere in 35 years. The credit goes to a team from the Smithsonian Institution. The trail began when zoologist Kristofer Helgen uncovered some bones and animal skins in storage at a museum in Chicago.

CLARITY makes brain transparent Combining neuro science and chemical engineering, researchers at Stanford University have developed a process that renders a mouse brain transparent. This imaging technique renders brain tissue transparent by “by removing the fatty, light-scattering lipid molecules that form cellular membranes.” The lipids are replaced with molecules of “clear gel” but all neurons (as well as other brain cells) are left intact and on full display. This has changed the way researchers look at this intricate organ in 2013. The process, called CLARITY, ushers in an entirely new era of whole-organ imaging that stands to fundamentally change scientific understanding of brain.

Voyager 1 makes it to interstellar space After months of uncertainty NASA announced on September 2013 that Voyager 1 spacecraft was fast approaching the fringes of the heliosphere, making history as the first human-made object to leave the heliosphere, the magnetic boundary separating the solar system’s sun, planets and solar wind from the rest of the galaxy. Scientists assume that Voyager 1 might have entered the interstellar medium around August 25, 2012. Voyager 1 is being hailed as the first probe to leave the solar system.

Skull from Georgia Implies All Early Homo Species were One An analysis of a complete 1.8-million-yearold hominid skull found at the archaeological site of Dmanisi in Georgia suggests the earliest Homo species – Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis and so forth – actually belonged to the same species. The skull fossil, called Skull 5, is the world’s first completely preserved adult hominid skull from the early Pleistocene. Unlike other Homo fossils, Skull 5 combines a small braincase with a long face and large teeth. It was discovered alongside the remains of four other early human ancestors, a variety of animal fossils and some stone tools – all of them associated with the same location and time period – which make the find truly unique.

cooling temper

Cooling that Temper The author Nuthan Manohar is a wellness consultant and researcher based in Cochin : nuthansm@gmail.com.

Every emotion has a place and a time. To survive, to thrive, to evolve you need the emotion of anger. Anger can result in actions where you stand up for what is right, stand against what is wrong and to be able to create the positive change needed. The expression can vary from mild irritation to frustration to rage. While anger is the fuel needed for transformation, when unchecked it can burn everything down. When you no longer have control over this emotion and the resulting actions are counterproductive for self and others then we can say there is a need for anger management.

i

Dealing With Anger Mountain Meditation : A Mindfulness Exercise Lie down comfortably, keeping spine neutral, legs apart, hands away from the

body. Take few deep breaths. Now visualize a mountain- a strong , steady ancient mountain. See it vividly in your mind’s eye. Now imagine that you are that mountain. Steady. Strong. Unwavering. Keep breathing. Now imagine the wind around you (the mountain)– you witness the wind and remain steady. The rain falls on the mountain – while the mountain does become wet, the mountain stays steady. The trees grow, the mountain stays the same, the river floods, the river dries up , the trees get cut, fire breaks out etc and through all this the mountain remains the same. You, as the mountain witnesses all the events. Do this practice of becoming the mountain and observing the world daily for fifteen minutes. Soon you will find that you are able to observe situations and respond appropriately. Yoga Yoga teaches us to non judgmentally be

aware of mind, compassionately control the breath and move into postures in a non violent manner. The result is a greater control over our emotions such as anger. Yoga practiced in its dynamic form – Vinysasa and Suryanamaskar makes the body sweat, teaches you to move from your core muscles and leaves you feeling refreshed and detoxed. Energetically the seat of anger, fear, anxiety is in the abdomen (Manipura Chakra) so postures that help build abs are useful. Dealing With Anger Like An Animal Animals express anger by scratching, biting and making loud noises. If you have pent up anger its time to chew and move your jaw and mouth , shake out your hands and in a safe comfortable place scream out loud HAAAA. Personally I find it cleansing to hug a tree and just scream HAAA… Aromatherapy And Crystals for Anger Bergamot, Camomile, Vetiver, Rose helps pacify and heal. Rose Quartz is calming, Amethyst helps diffuse anger and Charoite helps release negativity. May the New Year find you peaceful and pleasant, powerful and productive. Anger Management - Do I Need It? You Need It, If You get angrier than the situation calls for . Your anger is easily triggered - traffic, watching movies, something falls and breaks etc You and people close to you feel that you have a short temper Temper is making life difficult at work or relationships You keep recounting the situation and feel angry later on. Not being able to cool off Physical and verbal aggression You feel angry but not certain what the reason is You need cigarettes, alcohol or drugs to deal with the emotion or situation

relationship

quiz

Meet the Green-eyed monster in you

Jealousy is a universal emotion, it’s normal and human to be jealous, don’t be ashamed of it and don’t ever let that wreck beautiful bonds that you share with others… Often You consider yourself... As lucky as anyone. Less lucky than most. Not as lucky as a few friends of mine.

Scoring system

ealousy in relationships usually comes from insecurity that one feels about oneself or about your relationships. When you feel a pang of jealousy, try to figure out what’s really at the root of it. Be willing to change yourself, be confident because people who have self-esteem aren’t jealous because they know they don’t have a reason to be.

j

You studied for a whole week for the final exam. Your best friend didn’t study at all. You get a C. They Get an A. You: Say good job to your friend but secretly sneak a look at their test and make sure it was graded right Don’t care. FREAK OUT and talk to the teacher insisting they must be wrong You and your partner go out and you catch him/her looking at other girl/guy and you… Go and cry and not listen to your partner Simply break up

Yell and walk away You have felt it unfair that friends of you have more success financially or romantically. Almost never Sometimes Often You and your sibling enter a competition, two weeks later your sibling gets a call saying he/she has won the . You: Give your sibling a big hug and congratulate Tell your sibling since it was your idea to enter the competition; you should get 30% of the money. And when they say noyou threaten to blackmail. Insist it was your name and he/she heard it wrong You have avoided seeing friends because you know you will be jealous of their homes or families or hearing of their achievements. Never At least once

If you have got majority ‘Red’ then your personality says you don’t care about what other people have or do. You’re a confident person who has control over emotions and believes in your abilities. If you have got majority ‘Blue’ then understand that circumstances change — for all of us. Put yourself in other people’s shoes. Know that jealousy in relationships doesn’t help and only makes things worse. If you are the ‘Green’ category type then build up your self-esteem. Take a little time every day to do stuff that makes you feel good about yourself. When insecure thoughts enter your head, try to push them out. Stop comparing; remember that acting jealous doesn’t help anything. Be positive!

Foreplay

Don’t Downplay foreplay Sex no doubt is exciting but variety is the spice one needs to keep things interesting always

112

JANUARY 2014

ecently adult film actress Tasha Reign revealed that foreplay in the bedroom is what women love and lust for. She asserted that massaging and kissing are very important and can be hot, sexy, romantic and sensual. She insists that setting the mood with candles and lighting, scents and music, and even talking can be great turn-on for many women. Foreplay has always been an integral part of the whole lovemaking experience, but a very few acknowledge this. A few right moves can take the whole lovemaking experience to a more enjoyable and different level. Foreplay encompasses a wide range of activities, including hugging, kissing and fondling. By engaging in foreplay, one can create an intense desire for the other person. As this increase, so will your attraction and need. It has also been proved that foreplay can resolve many psychological issues like anxiety and stress to a large extent. The human touch is potent enough to communicate warmth, adoration, appreciation and love when used in the right manner and patiently foreplay can alleviate anxieties. A good foreplay begins with the mind. This means get into an honest and caring

r

conversation; let your partner know that he/she is wanted for more than sex and that you care about your partner, then start out slowly by stroking, massaging and kissing while gradually becoming more passionate.

Here are three simple steps to get you going. Connect with your partner Nothing is more important than having an emotional talk before lovemaking. Just be honest and genuine bout what you say. Be physical Without doing it in a sexual way, do anything to simply make contact. A lot can be said through physical contact and this, too, helps to build the connection. Kiss gently Start with soft kisses and pay attention to how your partner reacts. Slowly, you can progress with a bit more passion. Foreplay is a critical aspect of sex that needs to be mandatory. It serves both physical and emotional purposes. Great foreplay will lead to a better sexual experience. It is beyond important for each person’s enjoyment and pleasure.

Meta Pro Most people will agree that Google Glass is a pretty awesome looking device that’s capable of doing some amazing things, even more so when its new wink function goes live. But those same people will always want something better. So how about a smart glass that doesn’t need to be paired with a smartphone to get the best out of it? Or a smart glass that will allow you to interact with 3D images you see on the screen?

How about both? The MetaPro is a pair of sleek smart glasses that uses both lenses to project augmented reality images right before your eyes. Wearing this device, you won’t have to settle at looking through a small cube to see if you’ve got a message. With MetaPro, the world is literally your playground as it can project zombies in your living room. Think of MetaPro as a fusion between the Oculus Rift and Google Glass.

MetaPro uses dual immersive transparent displays made up of premium quality Carl Zeiss lenses with a 40º field of view and 3D HD display. Both lenses have a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. It has a 9-axis motion tracking which includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. It also features digitally precise 3D surround sound, a miniature HD camera, real-time depth camera, and time-of-flight 3D sensor.

Smokio Electronic cigarettes are growing in popularity as an alternative to smoking, as it replaces the actual smoke with vapor. A new product has just been announced called Smokio, which takes the electronic portion of electronic cigarettes to heart,

adding connections to smartphones that allows users to track all kinds of data about their smoking habits. Smokio e-cig uses Bluetooth Smart to connect to an Android or iOS device. The app promises to grant users the ability to monitor data such as where they have used the e-cig, how often

they’re smoking, and even how many real cigarettes they would have smoked based on the number of puffs taken from the vaporizer. With this data, users can see how much they have saved compared to traditional cigarettes and an estimation of how much their health has improved.

Smarty ring Even though smart watches like the Samsung Galaxy Gear and Pebble are just starting to penetrate the market, it looks like they could soon be overshadowed by smart rings. Although consumers won’t quite be able to channel their inner Green Lantern and speak to their fingers, the Smarty Ring, a project that launched on Indiegogo, claims it will bring smartphone connected wearable devices to the jewelry world. The 13mm-wide stainless steel ring

features a built-in, curved LED screen that displays the typical notifications users are accustomed to seeing on their smartphones. The screen lights up with icons for incoming caller IDs, text messages, and updates from social networks. The ring’s screen is flanked by two physical buttons that control apps and can trigger a smartphone’s camera. Another neat feature having to do with a handset is an anti-theft warning that goes off when the ring and phone stray more than 30 feet away from each other.

Nymi Online users been harassed by the endless stream of prompts, passwords, PINs and locks. Most frequent users have lost their identities to the endless stream of numbers and logins. Well, Bionym has found a better solution that both heightens personal security and allows a user to take back their identity. They’ve solved it with a heartbeat. The Nymi wristband authenticates the wearer’s identity by matching the overall shape of their heart wave (captured via an electrocardiogram sensor) through an em-

bedded sensor. It then uses Bluetooth Low Energy to communicate your identity to all of your devices, bypassing any verification obstacles. It sustains authentication, so long as the wristband remains in position, reducing the need for repeated authentications during the day. The Nymi also has motion sensing and proximity detection that allows users to perform remote, gesture-specific commands, creating a dynamic and interactive environment. A simple twist of the wrist can unlock your car door.

It works by scanning the food and uploading the data to special web server. ‘It is a fast, simple, and easy-to-use way to learn what’s in your food. music band Vethaalam

hile this generation goes berserk over musicians and seeking for inspirations from the West, we, being our origin in the God’s Own Country, cherish the songs penned and sung by The Kingdom Of Cochin’s pride, Shri. Mehboob Khan, popularly known to us in the name Mehboob. Being someone who spent his childhood in a

w

Bengal Battalion Military Camp polishing shoes, Shri. Mehboob grew up to become one among the notable singers of his era. The peculiar tone of his voice along with the simplicity in lyrics is what made him stand out. The same inspired us to collaborate and make Vethaalam alias Veroru Thaalam. Vethaalam shall take you back to your childhood where you heard bedtimes sto-

ries of King Vikramathithan and Vethalam, who used to hang around the King’s shoulders/neck. The concept behind our name is not different - the songs we sing and the thaalam we bring in will hang around you. :) Music is about thaalam (rhythm) and so does Vethaalam points to ‘Veroru Thaalam’, which means - another rhythm. YES, we are Vethaalams and we bring you Veroru Thaalam!
