FWD LIFE COVER LAUNCH The glitterati came in full attendance for an exciting evening at Dream Hotel for the cover launch of October issue of FWD Life Magazine.

2nd Year Anniversary t has been such an eventful journey last 24 months; add another 3 months for setting up. Everything seems to have happened so fast, but yes, here we are; 2 years old. In the current market with so many new magazines coming out and about equal number, if not more going out of circulation, we are very happy about having reached this milestone. There are many firsts that we have introduced, those which are now been used as bench marks. The first among this would be the introduction of the QR code on the cover. It took some time for people to understand what the QR CODE does, but once it caught on, it spread like wildfire. The perfect binding and the large format art paper also seems to have become the standard in magazine production in Kerala. Marking our 2nd anniversary issue we are introducing 2 new concepts to the general public. The first one is FWD’s own digital publishing platform which is set to grow beyond just another magazine browsing app. The second one is the augmented reality feature that we are introducing. This feature will project the magazine cover (for now, new features in the following months) in 3D while viewed through a smart phone. I would like to thank our investors, advertisers, clients, various associates, staff – both ex and current for helping reach here.

STARRY NIGHT Cochin’s style set gathered for a chic evening soirée at Ava lounge, Dream Hotel in Kochi for the cover launch of October issue of Kerala’s first premium lifestyle magazine FWD Life. The magazine cover was unveiled by none other than popular actor turned director Babu Antony. Adding more spice to the weekend evening, Sanjeev Thomas, the lead guitarist with AR Rahman team launched his latest album during the magazine launch, following which there was a high-octane concert in which Sanjeev Thomas performed with prominent artists like Neha Nair, Baiju Dharmajan, Ralphin Stephen, Roop Thomas, David Joseph and Suhail Khan. The after party session had some groovy tracks by Dj Savio, DJ Vijay Chawla and DJ Dominic Rozario who set the floor on fire with their pulsating music.

First look of Mammootty starrer ‘Silence’ is out The movie poster of Mammootty starrer ‘Silence’ has been released. In this movie Mammootty plays the role of a judge who is set to give a decisive verdict. Anoop Menon and Joy Mathew are also playing pivotal roles in this movie along with Pallavi Chandran, who is making her debut in Malayalam movies. Pallavi is active in Hindi small screen since 2006; she has been recognized for her work in ‘Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon. ‘Silence’ is directed by VK Prakash and it is produced by Afseena Salim under the banner of Aysha Film Release. YV Rajesh has done the script work for the movie. Music has been composed by Ratheesh Vega. The shooting of the film has been completed, and the makers are currently busy with the post-production works. The movie is planned to hit theatres in December.

India counts for maiden Mars mission The countdown for the India’s ambitious Rs 430-crore Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) has begun. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C25) is expected to blast off at 2.38pm on 5th November. According to Isro, the MOM objectives are twofold — technological and scientific.The technological objectives include design and realization of Mars orbiter with a capability to survive and perform Earth bound manoeuvres, cruise phase of 300 days, Mars orbit insertion/capture, and on-orbit phase around Mars. Excerpts We call Africa ‘The Dark Continent’, but for you how was the experience exploring Uganda - the culture, traditions, food and its scenic beauty? Yes, there is a reason because of which we call Africa ‘The Dark Continent’, if we look at their infrastructure or trace back their history; we know that it is truly a dark place to be in, but in spite of that I found the people in Uganda to be so happy and content with their life. We usually have a different picture about Uganda but when I visited the place I was simply mesmerized with the

It’s a time when celebs are trying their hands at singing. Do you think you can do a good job as a singer? No never…I don’t think I can ever croon that would be embarrassing for my loyal fans. scenic beauty. The place was a total contrary to what I had imagined it to be. I personally feel, compared to them we Indians live in the lap of luxury, we live in a democratic country we have our say in every matter yet we fret about little things. Of the 56 locations you shot for ‘Escape from Uganda’ one place you want to revisit? Well, there are two places in Uganda that I would always remember the rest of my life, one was lake Victoria that we saw as we drove out of the airport, it’s the second largest fresh water lake in the world,

the lake is so huge that it resembles a sea and the first sight of it blew my mind. The second one has to be Jinja, this is where the last one week of our shoot was held and it’s believed that river Nile originates from Jinja, so the place has a lot of historical and cultural significance and it’s a beautiful hill station with the most amazing weather. How challenging was it to perform an action role for the first time? I wouldn’t say that it was all highly stylized action sequences; those were all very normal antics that any woman

would do when she is caught up in a difficult situation to protect herself, so nothing was like too choreographed, but yes there were some scenes that demanded a lot of physical effort and were very taxing because the story revolves around a prison break so there was a lot of running around and chasing so it was tiresome at times, but the crew was so supportive that we were all in great spirits always. I totally enjoyed shooting for ‘Escape from Uganda’. How comfortable were you acting with Vijay Babu? Vijay is a great pal, I have

Excerpts known him for a long time and being in the industry for four years my priority was to make Vijay comfortable because our chemistry was really important throughout the movie. How was your experience working in an all women oriented movie like ‘Zachariayude Garbhinikal’? I didn’t have too many combination screens with other actresses in this movie but yes working with Sandra who also happens to be the producer of the movie was very special and apart from that I feel actresses including me are very lucky that we are in a space where so many roles and scripts are written for us, I think it happened in the 80s and 90s and after a dry spell Mollywood is back with scripts giving prominence to women and I am very happy about that. Toughest part of being a bold actress….. Toughest part of being a bold actress is that people forget that we too are humans and we have a softer side to our personality. But as far as I am concerned I am ok being considered a bold and arrogant actress rather than taken for granted. You and anchor turned actress Renjini Haridas are

great pals. What bonds both of you? I respect Renjini for the kind of person she is…Renjini is someone who lives her life in her own terms and is successful. I have seen her hosting an event in Sharjah, taking control of over 40,000 crowd single handedly, I am sure not many can master that and if she is doing that hats off to her…ever since she has stepped into the industry she has been ridiculed for her accent to clothes but that has not dampen her. I feel the only one thing that irks people here is the fact that she is a successful woman.

On FWD Life I love the fact that they put in so much effort for each shoot and article they publish. The one quality that you dislike in Aashiq… I don’t really hate anything about him; actually we both are a world of extremes and we do have our own silly arguments at times but that’s pretty much about it. What is it on that Rima and Aashiq disagree most of the time? Like I told you before we both are entirely different from each other but our values and principles in life are similar but we differ in tastes, on the bigger issues of life as such we agree most of the times. Your next holiday together would be to… We both have been longing

to visit Pushkar mela in Rajasthan for a long time but because of our professional commitments we were postponing our holiday, but this time we are going to make it. Is he an insecure lover? No…Aashiq is a super confident human being, he is very confident and comfortable about himself, so there is no question of he being insecure. If not for his movie, does he pay you surprise visits during filming? No, he doesn’t come to my movie sets because it belongs to some other director or production house and that can be a distraction for them. But I do visit him on his sets because he is the one who calls the shots there. Shoot with FWD? I think this is the second time I am shooting with Subhash. And he is wonderful photographer and I am sure he will bring out the best in me. Let’s see how it comes out. On FWD Life? There is a right kind of energy about this magazine; I think the FWD team has a clear vision on what they want to convey to their readers. And I love the fact that they put in so much effort for each shoot and article they publish.

t’s an year and a half since we interviewed Mrs Sheela Kochouseph at her house in Palarivattom. The decor is almost the same barring the few additions like the Head

Excerpts Referring back to the older interview, there was a mention of market expansion for Vanessa and Valero, also a similar line for children, how has the expansion being? V-star under its various product lines of Vaneesa and Valero has started off in new markets, namely Tamilnadu and Karnataka. A new line for teenagers has been introduced too. Our best selling product by far has been the leggings. It has become a major fashion trend. The light weight, cotton, spandex mix cloth with a bio-washed finish has become a hit largely due

As far as Kerala is concerned the Onam buying has been very dull last two years. Having brainstormed about this trend, I suppose the reason could be because the idea of buying something new for Onam is no longer relevant. The primary reason was to consolidate the branding, all

new amusement park ventures will be under WonderLa, for the same reason, Vega Land in Kerala is also been rebranded has WonderLa. It’s always easier to rebrand in Kerala because it’s our home base, people will always connect with the amusement park here. This consolidation was also necessary because WonderLa is going public issue soon. Arun Chittilappilly is handling Wonderla and Mithun Chittilappilly is handling V.Guard and since the Vega Land brand is available, my husband Kochuseph Chittilappilly is heading the newly launched Vegaland Developers. The first project is a closed gate com-

munity in Vazhakala, Cochin, called Green Grounds. True to its name the property will have good landscaping and gardens, something which I have taken a personal interest. My husband and I will be moving there once the project is completed. There seems to be a spurt in women entrepreneurs in Kerala, do you think the society has finally accepted women professionals? It is true that professionally qualified people are coming together and building new business in all sectors. Yet the question of gender comes into play depending on the marital status of those involved.

Parents don’t mind setting up businesses or encouraging their unmarried son to do business. When it comes to unmarried daughters they seem to hesitate. In many cases it’s often after marriage and children reaching school going age that women establish their own brands. Until then it would be more of an exercise in creative outlet. Developing a company is a very tough process; it’s even tougher to make a steady progress, so unless there is an all around support from family it’s very discouraging to put in so much of an effort into it. Government Support?

One of the most memorable trips we had recently is to the Amazon basin and Spain. These trips were in totally different nature from each other. The visit to Amazon was very different from our normal trips. The head mask with piranha teeth was a memento from the trip. During a boat trip on the Amazon we saw how deadly the piranha can be. Even out of water the fishes show a single minded attempt to bite at flesh. There were also huge water lilies that could support the weight of a small child. We also saw the famed anacondas

being treated like pets. We understood the extend of how

My original tender coconut pudding is also a great hit among family and friends. During a trip, the opposite hold true, both of us tries to explore all kind of new possibilities. From Octopus to snakes we have tried everything that’s available in various places we visited. But I must confess that Salmon, Spare ribs and fruit tarts remain an evergreen favorite.

a comfortable tete-a-tete with the talented designer at her majestically done posh couture house, one can’t help but admire her fine aesthetic skills and flawless fashion sense.

Excerpts How did you get into fashion? Since the very beginning I have had an artistic streak but it was my love for fabrics and embellishments that urged me to study Fashion in detail at NIFT Delhi where I was a gold medalist. I went on to garner further expertise as Head of Design at Arvind Brands after which I chose to follow my heart’s calling which led me to set up my own brand‘Nivedita Saboo Couture’ in 2002.

Saboo Couture’, how connected are you with the fashion industry? I am on the board of Pune’s biggest fashion gala - Pune Fashion Week. Also I am an active member on the advisory board of a number of fashion bodies whilst mentoring fashion students from various fashion institutes.

What are the glamorous accessories you have on display? A collection of limited edition headgears, trendy handbags, gorgeous clutches, stylish footwear, leather accessories, travel essentials, ties, bow-ties are created to complement the outfits one chooses.

Your designs are loved for it’s? Apart from bespoke fits, stylised elegance and comfort that exudes opulence and luxury it is the personal involvement through exclusive interactions that makes our couture a special one.

Proudest moment as a designer? As a designer my proudest moment is every time I see a twinkle in the eyes of a bride when she sees her outfit for the first time and the smile on her face when she wears a ‘Nivedita Saboo Couture’ outfit on her special day.

Most acclaimed brand presence internationally? In addition to foraying into the international fashion arena through a host of Fashion Weeks, we recently made debut on the red carpets of Cannes by dressing Maria Shatalova, a model and wife of Russian International Premier League football player Pavel Pogrebyak. Maria adorned a beautifully designed ethereal white gown with velvet appliqué detailing encrusted with diamante& pearls. The outfit added to Maria’s graceful persona which garnered her praises on the red carpet.

Warm lighting has given beautiful ambience on a whole. Earth tones are accentuated by artifacts and addons which lend character to the fluid living space. There is a right mix of style and amenities on a whole, just like the chic cook space where utility meets chic ambience. There are two things that stuck us; it seemed a lot more than a 700 sq ft home and the fact that they had actually managed to create a luxurious space. Preparation Heat a deep frying pan or wide saucepan over a medium

heat and add the oil. Once hot, add the onion along with a pinch of salt and cook the onion gently for 5-7 minutes or until soft. Add the garlic to the pan and continue to cook for two minutes. Then add sliced mushrooms and continue it to cook for 5 minutes until they are tender and golden-brown. Add the mustard and paprika and mix well. Add the stock and stir it as you pour it. Simmer gently for five minutes. Cook the rice in a separate saucepan until tender and once it is cooked, remove the from the heat. Stir in the soured cream into the mushroom along with

the juice of two lemon wedges and mix it all together. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. Serve the mushroom stroganoff with the rice and the remaining wedges of lemon on the side.

Crackling Duck and Lettuce Rolls Ingredients 4 Duck Breasts Salt to taste

For the sauce: 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp oyster sauce 1 tsp chopped garlic 3 tbsp soya sauce

1/2 cup Mirin (Japanese wine) if required 1 tsp schezwan peppers 2 fresh red chillies 1 tbsp ginger 1 tsp sesame oil 1 Chinese cabbage 1 green lettuce 250 gm baby cucumber 250 gm green onion

Preparation Clean duck breast and pat dry. On the skin side make crises cut marks and smear salt on both sides and pan grill the skin side first in a non stick pan on medium flame till the skin is golden brown.

Turn the duck breast over and cook for two minutes. Transfer the duck breast to an oven at 200 degrees centigrade and let it cook for another 7-9 minutes. Take it out from the oven and let it rest. To prepare the sauce, take a pan and add honey, oyster sauce, chopped garlic, soya sauce, schzewan peppers, fresh red chili, ginger and sesame oil. Cook these ingredients on slow flame

until a thick sauce is formed. Cut cucumbers and green onions into strips of same size. Steam Chinese cabbage leaves or take lettuce leaf and spread on a flat surface. Cut the duck breast into strips and place them on the leaf. Add strips of cucumber and spring onions. Spoon the reduced sauce on top and roll the lettuce into bite size rolls. Serve the rolls in a platter.

Prawn Sesame Toast Ingredients 4 prawns 4 bread slices 2 tsp fish sauce 1 cup sesame seeds 2 tsp chopped garlic 3 tbsp finely chopped coriander 2 tsp de-seeded chopped red chilli Vegetable oil

Preparation Pour all six whiskeys into an old fashioned glass, add ice cubes and serve.

Neatly top each circle with a generous amount of prawn mixture. Dip the bread from the topping side into the sesame seeds and deep fry till it is golden brown in color and serve it hot.

Method Pour olive oil to a wide non-stick pan and put sliced onions and chopped potatoes, and stir it for 5 minutes. Add garlic and sautĂŠ it.

Add flour and roast it for 2 minutes. And then add chicken pieces and salt and cook it for 8 minutes till the chicken’s juices run dry. Add 5 cups of stock along with black pepper and bring it to boil. Let it cook for another 15-20 minutes till the chicken gets cooked. Add carrots, cauliflower and celery. Half-way through add milk and some more pepper and continue to cook for not more than 15 minutes on medium flame and serve it hot.

Creamy Vegetable Cheddar Soup (Serves: 4) Ingredients Sliced carrots – 120 gms Chopped broccoli – 175 gms Water – 250 ml Chicken stock granules – 1 tsp Chopped onions - 4 tbsp

Butter- 50 gms Plain flour - 4 tbsp Ground black pepper – ¼ tsp Milk – 475 ml Grated cheddar cheese – 225 gms

Preparation Heat a saucepan over medium-high heat and put slices of carrots and broccoli in the required quantity of water and stock. As it boils, reduce the heat to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. In a large saucepan, sauté onions in butter over medium heat until they turn translucent. Put in flour and pepper and cook it for one minute. Pour milk and bring it to boil. Then add in cheese kept aside till it melts and then add more veggies if you require. Heat it thoroughly for once and serve.

Spanish Tuna Pasta Bake Ingredients 250g dried large pasta shells 1 tbsp olive oil 1 medium sized onion thinly sliced 1 large red capsicum, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves crushed 800gms canned chopped tomatoes 1/2 cup pitted green olives chopped 300gms canned tuna (drained and flaked) 3/4 cup grated mozzarella cheese 1/3 cup finely grated parmesan cheese

Preparation

Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan-forced. Lightly grease an 8 cup-capacity baking dish. Cook pasta in a saucepan of boiling salted water until tender and drain it. Meanwhile pour olive oil in a large frying pan and warm it over medium heat. Add onions and capsicum and sauté it till cooked. After 5 minutes add garlic and cook it for another 2 minutes. Add tomato and bring it to boil. Cook it for 10 minutes or until sauce has thickened. Add pasta, olives and tuna. Toss to combine and season them with pepper. Spoon the mixture into the baking dish and top it with mozzarella and parmesan cheese. Bake it for 12 to 15 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden and serve it hot.

Head to Winning Club the city’s must visit place for sports enthusiasts t’s so true that people bond faster and stronger over sports and food, and this could be very well the reason behind the Winning Club, a newly opened sports themed club in Cochin. With some big games only a few weeks away, we decided to explore the place that is comfortably decked up inside the Carnival Court opposite Infopark, Kakkanad. At the entrance, a bright neon name board and huge life size cut outs of sports stars on either side beckons us to step inside. Once the place is dimly lit by the staff, we found that it has a magical allure to it and adheres to all of the standard sports club criteria. Spread over 2000 square feet we find that it’s funky, lively and brimming with a sporty vibe. Comfortable leather sofas take up the corners and the chairs adorn jerseys of sportsmen. At the centre of the hall there is an elevated space designed like a football field. But what absolutely stole the show was the pub counter that gives an impression of a goal post. There are three projectors, 8000w mega speakers, with DJM 900 console that are strategically set up around
