debt trap

during Onam

60

e Malayalees generally have an hedonistic streak, its extreme would be the hold no bar Onam purchases of luxury items and fast moving consumer goods. Another Onam is around the bend, yet it’s not so festive all around, the dropping rupee, rising prices and all around feel of impending doom is surely a kill joy. Guess it’s really time to tighten our belts. The only upbeat thing about the situation is the increase in foreign remittance, yet this money might be only for dead investments like consumer electrical goods and textiles. A good boost is certainly needed for this economic mood, but the debt trap that can arise from this once a year over the top buying is certainly not worth it for the rest of the year bankruptcy

Excerpts Do you feel at ease working with new generation directors? Unni : Haven’t got to team with ‘new generation directors’, I have no say in expressing my experience working with them. On a personal note, I regard working with seniors as they’re helpmates who have taught me a good share out of their experience. Pearle : Be it young or senior, they must be totally dedicated. With a young director alongside,

quaternion seemed to be celeb genus; anyone would wish to work with– carefree and relaxed. Breakfast didn’t take us long. The beauties and the hotties after giving themselves a full stretch moved for their makeover all excited glimpsing through their individual outfits. Fitting into their respective casual outfits, they sat down for the makeover chitMaria’s proudest moment… When I was crowned Miss Kerala runner-up 2011

there will be fun, but what if enjoyment crosses its boundaries shifting focus. I personally wouldn’t gel with such a person or his principles. Anu : All the time I got to work with debut directors. Of them, director Shafi is the only one who is comparatively senior. To me he is a friendly person and I had no hiccups teaming with him. Maria : I’m just a movie old. Working with Kalam sir (Associate of director Lal Jose), I experienced

As it came to an end, Pearle Maaney, Maria and Anu Mohan joined him. For us and for them the shooting moments were hilarious. Kavya and Pearly who were constantly engaging the

The entire day’s shoot came to an end with a glamorous array of pictures for us and an opportunity for the jingbang to gel with their costars in their upcoming flick ‘Last Supper’.

P : As a lil girl I used to monitor people and without having a word I used to judge them. But now I don’t think I have any traits that can be referred to as ‘worst’. A : I sleep like a log. As I go off to bed late I find it difficult to rise early. So my wake up time is mostly close to brunch.

M : I boil my head and lament over silly matters. A thing about the opposite sex that puzzles you the most….. U : I never understand what they mean and what they don’t. It needs patience to figure out what runs through their mind. P: Females confuse me. They switch moods like how cut apples turn brown. Girls are so moody and emotional that they tend to forget what they say in the midst of their emotional turmoil. M: Men are poor at expressing emotions. We cannot possibly guess from their blank behaviour.

What should one do to get your special attention? U: Try not to be stupid. P: His/her humour sense, not at the cost of hurting others. Cracking jokes by making fun of others...that is emotional murder. A: A girl need not do anything. Her looks are more than enough. M: My attention…I guess it’s their genuineness and intelligence.

Do you believe that creativity comes along with puffing joints? U: Not at all. It is like blaming art for doping just like random excuses alcoholics’ cook up. P: Its utter crap. I know people who are addicted to this deadly habit. Movies too are promoting this trend which I feel is not right. When I was a psychology student I got to intern at NIMHANS, Bangalore. There I had met patients who even mistook cocaine to be their girlfriends. A: Not necessary. I know IT professionals who take it daily as a stress buster. There is also a misconception among the public that weeds are more rampant in the film industry. No...It’s there in every field, taken mostly for socialising. M: I am wholly against it. I do come across individuals who mull over smoking weed. For them it helps their imagination to cross boundaries.

Upcoming films…. U: ‘Last Supper’ in which I play a hacker named ‘Alby’. Then it’s ‘Vikramadithya’ a Lal Jose film that is based on friendship; the shoots of which will commence by mid March. And you can watch we portraying a comedy flick ‘Iyer in Pakistan’ directed by Fazal. P: For now it’s ‘Last Supper’. Movies weren’t my focus, but when director Samir Tahir approached me with the character in ‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’, I had no second thoughts. Good crew, bikes, interesting script… A: ‘Last Supper’ directed by Vinil, ‘Pianist’, a bilingual movie in Malayalam and Tamil were I play the lead role and Roopesh Peethambaran’s ‘You Too Brutus’ starring Sreenivasan, Tovino, Aju, Amalda Liz ( a top model) and more characters. adventurous trip. All four of us are co-stars in the movie. Celebrating Onam for you is… U: Undoubtedly it’s onam sadya. Having being in Ahmadabad for about 21 years, I felt more of a Malayali there than a Malayali boy residing in Kerala. I’m saying it as I was an active member at the Malayali Samajam, running on my toes engaged in Onam preparation for atleast four days prior to Onam. Collecting donations for onam sadya, joining the group for sadya preparations... P: Ours is a joint family. The celebrations begin the previous night with the plucking of flowers for ‘attapookkalam’, and preparations for sadya. The festivities reach its highest by afternoon with music, dance and clicking pictures. A: I will be at my paternal home in Kollam. There we celebrate Onam with sadya, a family cricket league at the courtyard and winding up the day’s festivities with some music. Last year as my father passed away, we had no celebrations. But this year as it’s my brother’s (Vinu Mohan) first Onam post marriage. M: Till 2011, Onam was just another day. In North Onam celebrations are within the four walls. But now as I’m here in Kerala I wish to celebrate it as a family get-together.

Pearle Maaney Weirdest go-to outfit… I do wear lungi and shirt for hangouts to places that wouldn’t land me in trouble.

Excerpts What advice would you give to someone who is yearning to cross the orders of South to explore the world of art and creation? True passion, drive and dedication are the three qualities one must have. If you have these you go in search for the right opportunities at the right place with the apt people. What got you interested in direction? Was it your first choice as a career? The circumstances I was raised permeated in me an inclination towards movies. After pursuing Mass Communication in Kochi, was MTV your readying scaffold to be a creative artiste? Excerpts Share with us your experience at MTV…. My work there was regardless of time or tiredness. During my training days, the routine was to leave the office by 1.30 am to catch the last train to my place. On reaching home, within the limited two hours for the next day’s work, I must wash my clothes, freshen myself; all in two hours. I enjoyed the hardships and happy that they got me here. The technological challenges you see in the Indian film industry facing in the coming years…. Budget is one of the factors that determine the technological development, other than planning, organisation and execution. When you talk about

How different is Emraan Hashmi in real life when compared to his reel character? In his movies we have watched him as a playboy or an auly guy. But on the sets he is a quiet guy, good human being and a dedicated actor. South Indian film fraternity, there can’t be any regional industry that can beat the advancements of Tamil movies, as they are masters in experimenting technologies. How flexible are Bollywood producers when it comes to budget? In Bollywood once the budget gets fixed, if the producer finds valid reasons to shell out more, they go for it. They are confident in the new modes of revenue making like the synchronisation rights, online rights and brand tie-ups. When we look at Malayalam cinema, the industry continues to solely dependent on satellite rights. Tell us about designing the sets of ‘Lazy Lad’ for

the movie Ghanchakkar…..…. We created a miniature set weeks prior to the shoots of the song ‘lazy lad’. It had details like windows, colour combinations and fixtures, so that we get an exact picture of how its placements and settings would look on the sets. Malayalam moments with the sensuous Bollywood actress Vidya Balan on the sets of Ghanchakkar…. To brief the script for the song I went to her flat. Talking to me she asked, ‘Are you a Malayali? I can make it out from your accent”, she said. We had a laugh and continued to talk in English. After the conversation, I said “see you” to which she replied ‘veedumkaaaam’.

You and your ex-colleague Prakash Nair from MTV got together to work under the banner of White Tiger Productions. Was the title an inspiration from the debut novel ‘White Tiger’ penned by Aravid Adiga? Yes, Prakash Nair who is the founding partner of White Tiger productions was my ex-colleague at MTV. He was a big fan of this book and when he thought of such an initiative, he named it so. Embarrassing memory …. During one of my midnight travels after work from MTV, I slept off in the train, until I was woken up by a railway officer as the train reached the yard. I think he doubted me to be a terrorist. He asked me for my id, called up MTV office for confirmation before they let me off. Something you miss about Kerala …. I miss Kerala food the most. To an extend Hotel Madeea, a small restaurant in Mumbai satisfies my pangs for Malayali food. When I get time I go there to have some appam and kadala curry for breakfast.

was filmed for the movie Kalimannu. Now six months after all the hoopla and its release, the lady is having her last laugh as the movie is receiving rave reviews that have put an end to all the commotion around.

How did your mother react to the delivery scene? My mother was totally supportive; in words and deeds.

Samajam. Shweta’s Onam sadya as a child….. I used to kill time restlessly waiting for my father to return from work with a roll of banana leaves in his

Excerpts Celebrating motherhood, this Onam is special for you. How different is this festive season going to be? Yes this Onam is dear to me as our family has a new member. The day will be set aside for a famly get together with myparents coming down from Thrisur. A better cook; you or your husband…. We both are quite good at it. Sreevalasan is an expert when it comes to preparing authentic Kerala cuisine. I am good at making North Indian dishes. For me cooking Kerala curries with coconut is next to impossible, the best I can do is frying pappads.

How does your baby cope up with your hectic schedule? Earlier she used to throw some baby tantrums, but now I suppose she’s getting accustomed to it.

How do you react to ‘Kalimannu’ controversies…. People are already under the impression that the movie is vulgar. It’s a movie that has got a U/A certificate. Yesteryears Malayalam cinema had fantastic scripts with strong characters potrayed, which was widely accepted by the crowd, if so why not Kalimannu. Your suggestions for moviegoers who haven’t watched Kalimannu yet? Before you label the movie as a cultural shock, please do go watch and point out the filth in the movie. It’s about the message of eternal bond between a mother and child.

You being busy with the promotions of the movie, talks are on about Sreevalsan quitting job for babysitting…. No that is absurd. Three months after my delivery he was totally around me and our baby, after which he continued to be a freelance writer. Wake up people....he is not at home killing mosquitoes.

Once Sabaina grows up, if she finds that her birth had lost its privacy, how would you convince her? I do admit that even as a newborn she had her rights. Like other child artistes who make their screen presence at a very young age without questioning their parents’ decision, she too will go with the flow. After all parents will never do something awful for their children. After all controversies, a conclusion you have come to…. Referring to a few, I think Kerala is an opinionated place. People come to conclusions before they experience something, be it good or bad. Few women stooped down with uncouth statements for which I gave no response.

Upcoming projects… 100 degree Celsius, a semi commercial movie is ready for the release. I’m also back in track hosting the show ‘Veruthe Alla Bharya’ Season III. And rest of the time I’m busy replying to the comments and controversies of ‘Kalimannu’. at is taking a good share of my time.

Excerpts Celebrating Onam as a non-resident Malayali…. I was in Kochi till I was 16. After which my family moved out of Kerala tosettle down in Chennai. Onam here and in Kerala are poles apart. Though we prepare Onam sadya at home, we miss the authentic Onam with a flavour of traditional ethnicity we used to have in Kerala. Intentions of making tracks for Malayalis this Onam…. I never consider creating music for fame or for the heck of it. So sorry, no Onam songs from my side. A personality who has helped you grow as a music director…. There are a handful of people. The foremost person will be Ouseppachen. I started working with him at the age of 17. For 14 years I assisted him. With him I began to work on three different levels of music making. I worked as a programmer, as an assistant of Ouseppachen and also got engrossed in advertisement music. About Gopi Sundar getting into the groove of directing music….

How do you unwind after work? I travel for a couple of days, preferably abroad.

Music is a feeling that erupts out of my heart. It’s a spontaneous expression. There is no clear-cut way of making them. At times various sources can influence in creating a novel note. alks on flicking music T are going about in the music industry at large. Your comment….. I personally wouldn’t call it copying or stealing music. We’ve some favourite tracks that would lie at the bottom of our hearts. And when we create music, unintentionally the adoration for those original compositions might bring out its influence, which might sound as a blatant copy. What is it about the song ‘Ammayi’ in the upcoming film ‘Nikkah’? The original folk song ‘Ammayi’ sung by the legend Eranjoli Moosa will be re-recorded for the movie. I will be producing sounds for it. The re-recording of the song is in no way going to tarnish the charm of the original version. How is it different from the hit track ‘Ammayi’ from Ustaad Hotel?

In Ustaad hotel, we had just used two lines of lyrics from the original track. The rest of it was a complete fresh song. Favourite singer in the Malayalm music industry…. Any singer who can take a composition from the music director’s mind to a higher level, satisfying the expectation of the director is my favourite singer. Bollywood movies you have lent music…. ‘Om Shanti Om’ for the song ‘Ankhom Mein Teri…’ for which theorchestration and sound designing was doneby me, ‘Tara Ram Pam’, ‘Bluffmaster’ for the track ‘Ek Mein aur Ekh Tu Hai and more. Of late I worked on two tracks of the latest blockbuster ‘Chennai Express’.

A talent of Gopi Sundar not made public… OK, this is not something that I have been doing in a professional way. But yes I’m very much interested in photography. When I’m in a mood I take random pictures on my mobile and professional photographers say it has brilliant frames. Struggle as a beginner… Luckily in the film industry they’ve always been there for me. But in the advertisement industry, initially it took time to set off. A director in whose film you aspire to be a music director…. I wish I were to give background score in Ranjith’s ‘Indian Rupee’, ‘Diamond Necklace’ and in director Blessy’s movies. Saying so, it doesn’t mean that the existing music is not good. It’s just that I would’ve liked to be a part of it.

Tracks in the pipeline Film ‘Koothera’ starring Mohanlal. ½ by director Arun Kumar, music for‘Arikil Oral’, ‘Mr. Fraud’ by B Unikrishnan, ‘Salala Mobiles’, starring Dulqar Salman. All together I have around 25 projects in hand apart from advertisement music.

Onam from

the Barracks FWD Magazine checks out Onam celebration of Major Ravi as an army officer, his memorable Onam Sadhya with his friend and mentor Mohanlal and more on his concerns about socio-political issues. Text Thabitha Marion Photos Various Sources he state is in high spirits as Onam is round the corner, but have we ever thought of our army men who are miles away guarding the country’s borders sans celebrations and festivals. Excerpts

Your plans for this Onam…. I never plan anything in life as I don’t believe in ‘tomorrows’.

Your Onam memories all through service days as a Commando… As an officer there were occasions when Thiruvonam had slipped of my mind. The Onam of 1990 is one of them. I was at the warfront for three consecutive days. Fighting three days and nights, fearlessly moving frontward defeating the enemies, triumph was ours as the third day came to an end. On the next

56

SEPTEMBER 2013

day when I got to call home, my parents said, ‘Son yesterday was Onam. Did you know that?’ I was zapped, but no regrets. How far has it progressed? Now as they settled on my suggestion, we went to Trivandrum for dubbing. I’m so glad that an actor like Mohanlal found time to be there. It went off well.

It’s not a person, but a feeling that drives me to create patriotic films like Karmayodha and Kandahar. I’m particular that the movie must get across a message.

Excerpts Major Ravi as a scriptwriter…. I’m not a writer who can sit and write pages in hours. For me completing an entire script might take years. When an idea clicks me, I throw it to my friends. We discuss, they bring in their concepts and lastly when it forms in shape I choose to go to begin the script at some quite and serene location.

A memorable Onam with Mohanlal and family…. Last Onam we were together in Kochi, celebrating at his house. He is an excellent host who makes me feel at home and so is Suchi, his wife.

happy. I’m not saying that all must adhere to this act. We can’t compel public to reflect so, but positively can be a source of encouragement.

Is it true that actor Suresh Gopi is making his comeback through one of your movies? I wish to do a film with Gopi. We have seen a lot of him; more often as a police officer. But these days as he is busy with the Kodeeshwaran show, we don’t get to see him on big screen. But surely I want him to be casted in one of my movies.

Recently the army was called to thwart untoward incidents at the Secretariat. Was it needed? It formed a scary moment in Kerala. I don’t incline to get into minutiae but in-short it was a misuse of freedom and power. Our rulers are people who don’t have a vision. When the ruling party, be it the Left or Right, it is on a cold war for survival, where do they find time to look after the State’s developmental affairs. To substantiate it, I like to refer to the number of corrupted legislators holding on to their hot seat as an MP.

A kind gesture by a tough ex-army officer…. On an Onam day, two years back, Captain Raju and myself seeing the plight of inhabitants residing at the slums of Kaloor, distributed food packets. They were so pleased to grab it and watching them relish the meal, we felt so

When you were told that ‘Karmayodha’ wasn’t going to be dubbed into Tamil by Mohanlal, you seemed to be displeased….. I was, but not any longer. As a director it’s fairly natural for me to be so. When a versatile artiste like Mohanlal can

fluently speak Tamil, why go for a dubbed version. Why didn’t I make Amitabh Bachchan speak Malayalam in ‘Kandahaar’? It’s not that he wouldn’t have learned few lines in Malayalam. But for his expressions, Hindi was the appropriate language. I was certain that dubbing ‘Karmayodha’ in Tamil without Lal’s voice will be a flat exhibition of the film without realizing the efforts my artiste had taken and so I refused.

Your brainwave to direct movies….. It’s not a person, but a feeling that drives me to create patriotic films like Karmayodha and Kandahar. I’m particular that the movie must get across a message. Filmy association with Mohanlal… We are family friends, co-workers and above all true patriots. At times he is also my mentor. When a thread for a movie comes to mind, he is one person I discuss it with. He makes suggestions; I convince him with my ideas and together we wrap up.

Projects in the pipeline… I have a script for the last 2 years; a love story with a Naval backdrop. I approached an artiste, the dates were finalized. Just as the shoots were about to begin, the actor postponed the dates when the entire crew was ready for Take 1, such a move was unacceptable. So I dropped it. I’m a disciplinarian and don’t appreciate unprofessionalism. As of now the cast hasn’t been finalized, but optimistically will happen in 2 weeks time. If not I will sell the script.

Excerpts Reminiscing your childhood memories about Onam…. Unlike other days, during the whole of Onam week, our cooks, gardeners’ would go on a holiday; it used to be a fun family time for my dad, mom, siblings and myself. Right from opening the gates for guests to cooking, we had to do all of it. Parents used to get us ‘onapudavas’ and wearing them we used to go to temple. Those were amazing days. How is celebrating Onam in the capital city? I do have very close Malayali friends in Delhi. We get together for Onamsadya at ‘Pappadam’ a Malayali restaurant to get a taste of aviyal and the varieties of payasams. Malayali food is my favourite and my daughter Kavi’s too. Finally you’re making your presence back home. How affordable will they be? I wish I could do the services for free because I love what I’m doing. But as I have to pay rent

A celeb who adorns a perfect makeup….. Deepika

that is impossible. The rates will be reasonable and would come in different rages leaving it open for the clienteles to choose the one that is light on their wallet. You have taken charge of your life single-handedly, your advice to women….. From my personal experience I like to say, you get only one chance to live so live it to the fullest without forgetting your values and culture. You never know there might be someone who might take strength from your life. Trends you would recommend for a fashionista this season…. We’re on with textured hair, so I advise to try braids in different ways. Is it true that when it comes to yourself, you adhere to minimum make up? Yes it’s true. I believe that minimalism works. Kajol, an eye liner and a moisturising lip balm are the must haves of every woman. It’s enough to make any woman look presentable and confident.

Malayali beauty myth regarding hair care…. Malayali ladies shave the misconception that hair grows in volumes if they leave them smeared in oil 24x7. That’s not true. All it does is just accumulating dirt and dust o your hair. Instead go for a hot oil massage at least once a week, leave it on your hair for an hour and a half and the wash it with a mild shampoo. What stops Malayali women from experimenting styles? In Malayali families when a small girl applies lip stick for fun and walks around I the house, elders would say, ‘Go wipe it. What have you done’? This implies I the child that beautifying is something not appreciated. Putting down a woman’s confidence starts from home. This could be the reason for Kerala not to e upfront in fashion, but now it seems to be changing. What have been the most challenging and daunting task for you as a makeup artiste? As my picks are mostly pastel shades, initially when I went to Delhi I found difficulty in following the desirable colours and styles of Punjabi women who like their makeup to be loud.

2.With Vijayalakshmi Silks and Rajan Jewellery the traditional player in textiles; we couldn’t have chosen a better place for shopping. As promised its owners Pradeep Vijayapurath (MD), Suma Kumari (Director) and Ashwin Pradeep (Director) were there to receive us for an unforgettable shopping expedition. Just like our team

who’re a bunch of shopaholics Meera too was on high spirits. Spread across three floors we began with jewellery that had a variety of studs, pendants, chains, precious semi-precious stones and antique wear like the Chettinadu necklace. Watching her appreciate the designs and realizing they’re her favorites, the salesman presented more of them in varied patterns. “I keep

flashy clothes and jewellery as my last preference. I like to wear sober and delicate jewellery like these,” said Meera holding on to an antique neckpiece intricately worked with pink stones. “I love diamonds but unfortunately astrologers have warned me to stay away from them,” she adds. As we were discussing our likes and dislikes, a salesman interrupted our conversation

asking, ‘When is your next Malayalam movie?’ She replied, “I just had one in Malayalam….next is a Telugu movie.” “So have you got plans of shifting your focus to other industries?” he continued. She laughed at it saying ‘nothing like that’. Glancing through cosmetics, collection of watches and outfits for newborns; Meera picked a baby pink frock for her niece. “I think this one would be comfortable as it doesn’t have embellishments pricking the wearer,” said Meera. Posing for a few pictures, we then moved to the first floor that has a good collection of garments for kids of all ages and a limited assortment of diamonds. Here we met a family who was there for a wedding shopping. It prompted us to ask Meera about her future plans and rumors regarding her marriage. “Media gets to know bits and pieces and come to conclusions. During a public event, I just said that my

marriage will happen sometime soon. Does that mean something is on?” said Meera. It was then Ashwin approached Meera with a request to hand over a prize to the winner of the Annual Fest. We then proceeded to the second floor that was a total entertainment - colours, weaves silks and an elaborate display of saris, lachas, dhawanis and wedding gowns. Meera opted to begin her hunt on Kanchipuram saris. The floor was shelved with a variety of exquisite hand-woven Kanchipuram saris and silk saris. With pleasing staffs that were out there to help her try on saris, riffling through a mélange was not a whale of a deal. Ultimately Meera chose a blood red silk sari with threadworked polka dots. There one of the directors Suma Kumari introduced Sobha, the lady in charge of the boutique supposed to be functioning on the fourth floor

soon. “We propose to have a boutique that delivers sari blouses in an hour. We thought of having this amenity as many of our customers approach us with urgent requests,” said Sobha. Asking them to be billed, we climbed up to the third floor that has a zone completely for mens’ sherwanis, suits, shirts, trousers, kurthas and the further shopping space with a stylish collection of salwars, churidars in latest designs and trendy colour mixtures. On looking at the time, it got through our head that with Meera as a shopping companion and plenty to choose from, the quick buy ended around 5.

startup Metromatinee

Metro’s success Mantra With the rise of net savvy population in the country; strategic planning and promotion of a movie has become a necessity, with their successful marketing mantra, Metromatinee has taken online movie promotion to a new level Text FWD Media Photos FWD Media t a time when Indian cinema is celebrating its glorious centenary, the popular online entertainment web portal metromatinee.com is also joining the celebration with a century to its credit. Yes, so far 101 movies have chosen Metromatinee as their online movie partner. The success of the portal is evident from the views of movie men like Ranjith Rajaputra who says, “Online medium is a very helpful means of promoting a movie. It is one of the best ways of making the film reach the public, especially as the time is so connected with social networking, following publicity through a source like this does wonders.” Screen writer turned Director Shanker Ramakrishnan who shares the same opinion says “Online movie promotion sites do help as they give a fair idea about the movie which enables its viewers to wrap up to a conclusion. Moreover it’s an enterprise for the youngsters; however, it still has a long way

a

64

to go.” Shafeer Sait, Producer cum Production Controller who has watched the trend very closely says majority of the cinema-goers on the first day of the film’s release are between the ages 20-30. They are a group of youngsters who are active on social media. So when we go for an online promotion, we are confident that the youth will come across it. And getting reviews from them, the movie will have its take off. To be specific, for the film Salt and Pepper I worked as an executive director. That was director Ashiq’s second film. Promoting songs and the film through social media really boosted the movie to become a hit, same as with ‘Ordinary’. The movie was to release on March 17, and the same time SSLC exams were on, we were doubtful about the viewership, but surprisingly on

the first day all the shows were houseful. And I feel partly the credit of publicity goes to its online promoters.” Arun Kumar Aravind director of movies like Cocktail and Ee Adutha Kaalathu puts forward a suggestion he says though online promoters keep track of the number of viewership, which is a good thingthey must also devise a strategy to make sure that at least 1 lakh end up watching the film.” Metromatinee which is a complete package of exclusive movie reviews, photos, videos and various other details of newly launched Malayalam flicks, also provides space for viewers to write reviews on new movies. The concept of internet and online marketing which is the rage of present age had a humble beginning sometime back with the Lenin Rajendran

directed movie ‘Raathrimazha’. The Mohanlal starrer Shajii Kailas film Red Chillies followed the suit and it was a presage of things to come. Metromatinee ushered in a change that was path breaking in internet movie marketing. The baby steps that were taken with Rathrimazha transformed into firm footsteps of conviction with movies like ‘Traffic’, Urumi,’ Rathinirvedham’, ‘Maanikkyakkallu’, ‘Diamond Necklace’ etc, and became apparent by the super success of the movie ‘Memories’, which is taking box office by storm. Hitting a century takes a bit of effort and it is akin to constructing a monument that requires patient step by step building. Apart from Malayalam movies, Metromatinee has also taken up Tamil movies like

‘Nanban’, ‘Thaandavam’, ‘Velaayudham’ etc that has been equally successful. One among the pioneers in popularizing the concept of online movie promotion, Metromatinee is currently playing the role of social media managers of the Celebrity Cricket League team ‘Kerala Strikers’. The portal that won the award for the best online media in the International Film Festival of Kerala 2011(IFFK) is associating with Red FM; Kappa TV etc. in a mutually benefiting manner. After a wonderfully enriching experience in internet movie marketing Metromatinee is looking forward to more onerous responsibilities and exciting opportunities, the bottom line being providing wholesome entertainment and credible information!

team of superyacht designers, Orion and John Shuttleworth has given the 42.5m Trimaran a unique design, a fusion between Concorde and a spaceship. The hull launched on April 11, 2012 from China for the Hong Kong based billionaire Anto Marden has been done with attention to detail. Paying regards to environmental con-

cerns, the yachting industry has got pro active when it comes to reducing fuel consumption. The sea trials show that Adastra’s fuel consumption at 10.5 knots is as low as 17 litres per hour when carrying 10% fuel and water. with 30,000 litres of fuel. The slender hulls and streamlined exterior allow the cruiser to travel faster in the open ocean and at 17 knots she has a 4,000 mile range so can comfortably cross both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at hi-speed. These features make this luxury yacht a true environment friendly initiative. The design modification also allows ‘Adastra’ to dwell on long voyages without the need of refuelling. To ensure the light weight required for very low fuel consumption. The deck and superstructure is constructed from carbon fibre with Nomex honeycomb core, the hull is glass/ kevlar foam sandwich and the interior is light weight oak cabinetry using honeycomb panels. To help reduce weight further, virtually every aspect of the boat is custom built. This includes carbon fibre hatches, toilets, portlights and ladders, which are all built specifically for the vessel. Like its exterior the interior of the hull has also been planned meticulously, Adastra’s 16 metre beam creates a spacious saloon area on the main deck and accommodates a lounge area, dining table and navigation station. A forward facing door

through the saloon window gives easy access to a large sunbed on the foredeck. The aft deck has a sofa and bar area to port and a dining area to starboard, further aft there is space for a 4.9 metre tender and directly below is a garage which can store a 3.1 metre tender. The garage door has been designed to fold out and create a large dive platform. The main helm station, which has seating for two, is positioned in a raised pilot house situated between the aft deck and the saloon area and forms part of the cross beam structure. Extra space has been created below deck by slightly flaring the central hull just above the waterline. This area has been split into two sections with a full-width master cabin located aft with access from the deck saloon, and two further guest cabins, accommodation for the crew, and the galley located forward of the engine compartment. Adastra offers comfortable accommodation for nine guests and up to six crew members. The impeccable application of technology is another key feature of this watercraft; the high tech yacht can be controlled through an iPad from a distance of 50 meters.

matic nature, the culture and tradition of the country is well preserved and the strong influence of this is reflected in the lives of people. Major sources of income for the kingdom are tourism, hydroelectric power and agriculture. However, a high tourist tax imposed on tourists is an attempt to retain Bhutan’s strong national identity and traditional values; this has kept mass tourism out and closed the door to budget-conscious

backpackers. This makes the place accessible only to the most affluent. The administration has banned mountaineering in Bhutan out of respect for the deities said to live among the country’s peaks, although high-altitude treks, such as the challenging Snowman Trek, are still possible.

Getting In Paro International Airport is the only entry point to Bhutan by

air, served only by the country’s flag carrier Druk Air. Druk operates four planes which fly routes to Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Gaya, Guwahati , Kathmandu and Dhaka .

Travelling around Travelling to different towns and cities is possible by bus. Share taxis are also available.

Places to visit Paro, Thimphu, Punakha,

Wangdue, and Jakar are tourist popular destinations. There are unexplored region of Zhemgang and Eastern Bhutan that offers the ultimate experience.

Kurje Lhakhang A temple built around a cave with a body print of Guru Rinpoche embedded in the wall. Guru Rinpoche practiced meditation here on his first visit

to Bhutan and it is the earliest Buddhist relic in the country.

Dzongs The dzongs are ancient fortresses that now serve as the civil and monastic administration headquarters of each district. Apart from the architecture, which in itself makes a dzong worth visiting, they also hold many art treasures.

Trekking Trekking is also extremely popular. The Druk path is the most commonly trekked from Paro, to the capital Thimphu. The recommended season for this trek is mid-June to mid-October.

Festivals Tshechu is the largest religious

festival in Bhutan and is celebrated in the late summer and fall throughout the country. It attracts around 30,000 people. The highlight of the ceremonies is the masked dances by monks, which were developed according to precise instructions given by past Buddhist masters.

wanted a contemporary interior without leaving the essential Indianness. Mr. Premdas, Chief Designer of Monnaie Interiors was successful in infusing all these elements as per the wish of the client who was so precise about his requirements. As per the client’s requirement, all modern accessories come with

a bit of Indian tradition blended with it. This being the design concept, this 4434 sq ft home features a perfect restful and spiritual retreat.

Foyer The key aspect of the project is well reflected here. The foyer

is about 201square feet and is the main allure of the interiors. The client who had a spiritual inclination wanted to create a feeling of positive energy, elegance as well as a spiritual feel to someone entering the house. The foyer gives the feel of a prayer hall and is independent from other rooms. The lighting

of the area makes it apt. The wall cladding in front of the prayer hall with small pieces of coconut shells is the wow factor here.

Living Room The living room is simple, well arranged and creates a lasting

impression for all who enter the house. The LCD unit maintains a vast music collections and a provision for curious. Light coloured sofa and direct lighting in conjunction with indirect illumination adds to the elegance of the room. A warm appeal to the room

is maintained with an overall beige dominant theme. The walls are painted with light beige with two wall contrast; the contrast wall is painted a shade of yellow and orange mix. The ceiling work is done with 12mm gypsum board, provided for indirect illumination. The entry

to the living room is through a contemporarily styled sliding door.

Dining Area It is the same pattern as that of the living room - a light orange colour with beige tone for walls, and ample wooden finish. Family photos arranged in an asymmetrical manner add to the beauty of the wall.

Home Theatre cum Reading Room This is designed as a sort of combination of AV room and a reading room. Regarding the lighting of the interiors, the client wanted his interiors to be bright; and cove lights are used along with a square modern chandelier. A reclining type sofa here adds luxury and comfort. The wall colours are a combo of dark maroon with light hue of maroon.

03 02

Kitchen The kitchen here is modular; a U shaped one with multi utility facilities. The kitchen has a breakfast counter and a utility area which is equally eloquent. Kitchen is made using high quality BWP plywood with MR+ laminations from Merino Laminates due to the fact that it is totally scratch proof and is easy to clean. The colour combo used in the kitchen is slightly different from the other designed areas; and executed in a total modern outlook with an off white color as whole and choco brown laminate (elevated wood) for contrast. The wall tiles also syncs with the design.

Unlike yesteryears, people today are ready to spend more on weddings and more over want to make it in a unique affair by thinking and planning it in an out of the box way. Theme

weddings are getting a way of life and Indian metros are already witnessing uncommon weddings like- Weddings in Amusement Parks, Weddings in Yachts and many more.

Keralites are ready to spend a lot on weddings, but are reluctant to try uncommon or rare themes as popular in North. But they are still ready to try within their barriers, something

Quick Read out of box and creative. Sijas Ali of Maritus Wedding Planners shares his experience of 3 innovatively themed weddings in Kerala.

Candle Light Stage Candle light has been the most romantic theme for lovers worldwide. Imagine you exchange your vows a thousand candles around you. This happens not just in Bollywood movies and songs! Shijo and Jacquline from Mavelikkara, exchanged their vow in such a romantic atmosphere. The entire hall was lit with 1500

candles coiled in gold and tumblers. The candled walls burned for 3 hours and there were no additional lighting in the hall! A fountain as a centre piece and a crystal pillar completes a perfect romantic backdrop for tying the knot!

Jungle Theme Wedding backdrops are always thought of romantic, flowery or awe inspiring. But have you ever thought of getting married in a jungle amidst mountains, trees, tribals and water ways? Yes, Athish and Nima from Karunagappally, dreamt about their

wedding in this way. The wedding reception held at Royal Gardens, Harippad was set in a jungle theme. The guests had to pass through a 40 mtrs long tunnel right from the gate to the venue. Being a night event, the venue was dim lit, with artificially erected trees all around, and sounds of animals, insects and gurgling streams instead of music. Tribal men dressed in a niche greeted the guests and danced in the backdrop with jungle sound effects. The entire 4000 sq ft venue had several jungle niches and streams, and the couple were

Neil from Kochi. Their wedding held at Hotel Le Meridian, Kochi was based on a demand of a contemporary theme. Contemporary designs are either asymmetrical or funky. A contemporary wedding was planned for the couple with a decor which is far from the usual floral patterns and arches. The stage design replicated a contemporary interior and so were the niches which are complete with pyrotechnics and performances. The variety entertainment stages were also selective which included the first ever bubble dance staged in Kerala by Russian artists. If you ever want to give a surprise to any of your friends or loved ones, you can call them and pre-decide the order for the event to make those special moments transit smoothly without abrupt interruptions.

Lamb rib chops with fig and mint sauce Versatile and delicately flavoured this dish is a rare combination of Lamb rib chops, figs, dipped in a hot pan with some chopped shallots and butter. It’s a tad bit sweet and tastes exotic.

Lemon Chicken Chicken breasts beautifully cooked in wine and fresh lime juice garnished with parsley. The chicken melts in the mouth and leaves you wanting for more.

Tirami - su It’s a very fluffy, light, mocha flavoured cream cheese mousse with a nip of espresso & liqueur and an after bite of chocolate. I fail every time trying to explain, but when I make it and let people taste they faint of heavenly ecstasy!

A Fishy Tale It takes some experience and experiments to determine how often a fish must be fed and how much it should be fed. But the vital thing to keep in mind is never over feed your aquatic friend

QUICK READ Tips for new aquarium owners As a new aquarium owner you may be eager to add new fish to the newly set up aquarium but remember that water in the tank is new so let the water stabiliz. Let the gases, minerals and chemicals dissolve in the water. Aquarium water should be treated to neutralize harmful materials, and allowed to stand for a day or so to allow dissolved gases to escape and the pH to stabilize. Don’t add too many fish all at once. Until the bacterial colonies have fully established, the aquarium cannot safely support a full load of fish. Only add a couple of small hardy fish initially.

ow many of you have closely watched aquarium fish being overfed so regularly by its keepers? Those who do so must be under the false belief that the fish must be scooting to the top of the aquarium in need of food. It is not so. The first and foremost thing every fish keeper must know is that they’re opportunistic feeders. If they are given food in time, how do they survive in the wild? They wouldn’t know when their next meal would be. Over feeding would not only harm your pet fish but also its artificial living environment that you have created for it.

h

110

SEPTEMBER 2013

Uneaten food when sinks to the bottom of the aquarium will get trapped in the filter resulting in it getting decomposed and polluting the water. And eventually due to the contaminated water in the fish tank, life in it cannot be sustained. Another hazard because of over-feeding is the algae bloom. The fish food that you constantly put in the tank either to see your fish more fleshy or for the fun of watching it eat, if left without consumption for a few days would rot, leading it to produce a tremendous amount of fertilizer that is harmful for the fish. Feeding them the right way is quite simple. Feed them with a pinch

of fish food at different times during the day, instead of pouring a handful of it at a time as their stomach is relative to the size of their eye. After giving food, watch if it consumes it within 30 seconds, if not take out the leftovers floating on the surface to prevent pollution. All species require some level of protein, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Be it any breed, proteins are essential for them. It helps to repair their cells and body tissues. Lipids too are highly as they are sources of energy. But be on the watch regarding quantity as too much fat can affect its liver’s ability to filter and cleanse the blood.

New aquarium owners often choose fish that look appealing to them, without knowing the environmental needs of the fish. Some fish may fight with one another and yet some others require different water conditions. Always research each species before choosing tank mates. Select peaceful fish that thrive in similar water conditions. Diet is an important element to ensure healthy fish, and the ideal diet goes beyond the simple “flaked” foods available in most stores. Freeze-dried foods and pellets make good alternatives.
