Chinese handcuffs Chinese handcuff is a small toy often used for pranks which traps the fingers inserted into it. One escapes from it by pushing the finger in further. Redesigning for us at FWD Life has been a similar experience, once committed to the redesign we had to follow through to the other side. We have tried to create a new layout which is reader engaging. Many ideas propped up during the brainstorming session from minimalistic art to street art concept. The new ad for the magazine is the visual representation of our old ad. The redesigning wouldn’t have been possible without our Design Consultant Subin Beats, he has been associating with the magazine from its inception, Prajeesh M.U and Deepak Muralidharan, friends, well wishers and designers extraordinaire who helped us to meet the tough redesigning deadlines. The inputs from our CEO Arun Balachandran were especially helpful when it came to choosing between the favourites. And as always our patient and industrious Creative Head Sreerag Vinod who was game for any challenge I threw at him. Dear Reader, hope you enjoy the new look of FWD Life.

34 Behind the Scene
Our design consultant’s child’s baptism was the day after we finished the design. Late night the whole team was running around town to find a barber to trim his hair and beard, at last we managed to convince a stylist whom we frequently use for our shoots to have a go. He was game on the condition that it would be a makeover not just a hair cut and shave, the result; he is walking around with a soul patch and bandito mush; and extra hours at home trying to convince his wife why she shouldn’t be sending him a legal notice for playing the fool.

he question of visuality in India’s high art scene is very often predicated upon artistic practices that appear to be somewhat ‘mod’ in shop-talk while being rather unconnected in a cultural sense. hierarchical structures and ever -renewing counter-hegemonic discourses. The totalizing presence of hegemonic devices are rendered visible by this ‘minor’ take on contemporary politics, suturing hitherto unconnected areas and putting forth powerful counter arguments. In a space where critical discourse and potentials for creative fabulation are very often taken for oxymorons the present
show memorizes the unspoken asides , or inner tribulations of the ‘alien others’ that majoritarian constructions in India tend to obscure. Everyday resistances to power mark themselves differently working with and around accepted notions of culture, sometimes embracing and at others bombarding them, both done in defense of and for the sake of common lives.

I would say it’s a sense of fickle mindedness that rules the other side of stardom. Initially, it did cause me some discomfort. But as time went by, I prepared myself to overlook such moves by enjoying the work I am doing.

Chat with Shaji, team owner the kerala strikers owner is hopeful of a better show from the team this time Was CCL Season 2 a profitable affair and why? No, it wasn’t. Its reasons are quite confidential. But this time, yes, it definitely seems to be much better. Do you see CCL becoming bigger than IPL? Yes, it is, as one can very well make it out from the ratings of CCL 2. Biggest challenge you face to have all the celebs together? Not much really, as things go very smooth with AMMA’s co-operation. Interacting with celebs is nothing new to me. I have been friends with Lal and Priyan for 25 years.

Why the team has more new faces and a few superstars? The only reason is their busy shooting schedule. Last year, many players used to come for matches straight from location without much preparation. It did affect the game. So now we are particular that all players need to attend practice sessions. Last year’s after party experience… I would say true colour of
people comes out when they are drunk. They are their true self and that night we all were drunk. It was a memorable party with booze and dance. Team upset about Lakshmi Rai, ex-ambassador of Kerala Strikers, who cheered for your opponent… As thought her cheers matter to us.We were there for playing the game and not to be entertained by cheers.
About CCL curtain raiser 2013… It was in Mumbai, a colourful event that had hundreds of celebs from the Indian film fraternity. Our team too did a bit of entertainment which was applauded. Lal sir sang the song ‘Aattumanal Payayil….’, Mamta sang ‘Daddy Mummy….’ And Indrajith surprised the audience with an evergreen Hindi track.

diving for catches. They are promising opponents. About Bojpuri Dabanggs, I am yet to know them.
How do you see winning possibilities? Our team has equally good bowlers and batsmen. We are going to play to achieve our ultimate dream of lifting the CCL Trophy this season. But having said all these, I would say cricket is a sport in which luck too plays its game. So keeping our fingers crossed.
What was the toughest match last year? The toughest was the match against Mumbai Heroes, a match which we thought of losing. Even we were surprised when we won against them for 10 wickets.

Excerpts Space We don’t look at architecture as object, a construct can be seen as an object. When it comes to architecture, it has to start from the feelings. It’s the content that matters and not the outer warping. How you feel the space is extremely important. The outer expression is probably the resultant of the internal experience. Our job as architects is actually to define space and modulate the volume. Every space has an emotional attachment to it. A temple, school, community centre, restaurant- all these have different emotional requirement. Designing each of these places would require a different kind of response which would encourage certain kind of activities there.

Indigenous Architecture styles
Go Green
Our native style has always depend on the material and technology available specifically to places. In Kerala, you have sloping roofs which almost touch the ground.
Sustainable development now has a lot of publicity, what it has done is made people more sensitive to elements of nature. Many architects have been following
al reason behind it. In Kerala, there are lots of verandas outside for breeze while in Rajasthan there are closed

to the site. There is a slope on one side and there is water in the front. We are trying to bring the water front view to every apartment. On the top there is a slope on to the other side and thus those duplexes have view on both the sides. We are particular about using only indigenous plants for landscaping and in a few years, we hope to give back the green slope to view seen from the opposite bank.
02
Issue oriented education We traveled a lot understanding the process of architecture and it happened because it was a process of questioning. During that time, people like DB Doshi and Charles Correa were connected to Bengaluru in various ways and because of them whichever architect visiting India would come
work on similar stuff. Last 5-6 years, people have started getting sensitive t designs that incorporate the five elements of nature and five human senses and because of this sensitivity one is bound to create something more organic. It’s not a luxury anymore. Green buildings are not expensive. Beyond that to generate power, there would be extra instillation needed.

to Bengaluru. We started conducting workshops for students and the group became bigger. Especially in a creative field, we start with an image in mind, probably because of various influence and ideas that frequent your thought. I feel that is a wrong approach, the image should be the result of the process of questioning; you don’t start with it, you end with it. The questioning would be about climate, culture, social condition etc, everything that would affect the project and the people using it. This process of evolution and discovery is the most important thing in education. Sadly, education seems to be more form-oriented and students can’t be blamed because they are overwhelmed by the information available through various sources.

ometimes real life appears to be more fictitious than a reel life plot. The profile of renowned Carnatic musician Dr S. Hariharan Nair has sufficient ‘dramatic’ element in it. It’s truly an inspiring story of determination. Despite losing his two hands in a freak mishap, destiny couldn’t snuff out his fighting spirit. Music was the elixir that helped him resuscitate. Hariharan Nair, of Kadungalloor, Aluva was a connoisseur of music since his childhood. After learning harmonium and tabla, he started learning music under Koonammavu Lonappa Bhagavathar. He began his musical journey by performing concerts at temples. In 1971, he joined Premier Tyres, Kalamassery as casual labourer. After three months, an accident in the company made him a disabled man. When he regained consciousness after a few days, he was shattered. Recalling those painful days, Hariharan Nair says, “I was heartbroken to realize it. I made attempts to commit suicide thrice as I was unable to cope with the reality.”
S
Turning point After three months, Hariharan Nair was taken to Pune Military Hospital. “There I saw people without limbs and other defects. The scenes of suffering people changed my attitude. I made up my mind to fight and never give up,” he says. With artificial hands he joined again for the job at Premier Tyres. But he continued learning Carnatic music under gurus like Cherthala Govindankutty Bhagavathar, Palluruthy Natesan Bhagavathar, Mavelikkara Prabha Varma and Nedunkunnam Vasudevan. He retired from the company at the age of 45. And he did not get any compensation from the firm. Along with pursuing music, he mastered Sanskrit and Telugu. “I got married after the accident. The girl, Nirmala, was ready to marry me knowing all about me. She had 34

Why is different? Dr S. Hariharan Nair
Lack of authentic books on music made him an author. “Sangeetha Sagaram”, a book which provides meticulous information on music from the Vedic period to the present era, is his gift to the world of music. He used his plastic hands to write the book. He has composed as many as 250 kritis too. Writing with his artificial arms, he passed the music diploma course examination conducted by the Madras University. He has composed “Srichakra navavarana kritis” based on the nine “avarana chakras”, in praise of Shri Maha Tripurasundari. “These kritis offer a peep into the Advaiti school of Hindu philosophy and elements of tantric rituals.” He explains.

Music is my soul… According to Dr Hariharan Nair, music gives positive energy to our cells. “Music is my soul. Without music I would have died after the accident,” says this 65-year-old musician who is also a practitioner of music therapy, Vedic therapy, yoga and Reiki. He got doctorate in Music Therapy from Calcutta University in 2003. Established in 1984, Sariga Sangeetha Academy has 150-odd music students, including 5-year-old children and 60–year-old people. Dr

Our purpose is to fuel the passion for riding, advocate motorcycling activities for our members, share our experiences with each other and foster opportunities to socialize. startup happenings
Life at Startup Village a sneak peak into the happenings at startup village The new BB hoop Did someone say BB?Just a couple of weeks ago, when you would catch a startup-villager say BB, it meant either BlackBerry, our primary partner, or beanbags, which we have all around the office to chill out in. Third one was born to support the idea of healthy body-healthy mind: basketball! Startup Village fun zone constantly evolves with games and fun events and now the new addition of a basketball hoop has really taken its role as the favourite sport of our start-ups. It’s just amazing to see the teams build up, play some hoops, have fun and it all takes care of the physical activity of the day at the same time!
QUICK READ Fly your innovation With an aim to develop innovative thoughts, Startup Village in association with Skyfi Labs hosted an RC Aircraft Workshop as a part of the AerotriX Super Challenge in association with Conscientia, IIST Trivandrum on January 12 and 13. The workshop kick-started with sessions on ‘how to design a flyable aircraft’. As many as 45 students attended. By next day afternoon, the eight groups were spotted testing and flying their creations up in the sky over Startup Village building. After working hard and enjoying the weekend of designing, building and flying, the groups got award for best innovator, fabricator and design.

Winter @ HangoutIndia HangoutIndia in collaboration with Rubus Labs (BlackBerry Innovations Lab) conducted a BlackBerry internship programme in December at Startup Village. The programme, began from December 10, 2012, was attended by almost 100 college students from all over the country. The internship was aimed at imparting knowledge to students about the BlackBerry devices and creating apps by the end of the month. The interns were given an opportunity to interact with dignitaries who specialized in marketing, mobile application development and gaming, organised by Startup village and Hangout. Of the 100 students, who came for the internship, 60 students successfully developed 150 apps. The target was to get 100 apps, but the students were so enthusiastic and encouraged that finally there were 150 apps ready for BlackBerry. The event concluded with a New Year Bash on December 31.

Christmas and New Year seasons gave a reason to throw bigger parties together with all the startups and the management team It’s festive mood at Startup Village
Small or big success and occasions, we celebrate them all with full of zest. A birthday of a colleague, small step of success or a new product launch- all of it is visible with either cake, firecrackers or music and the “studentrepreneurs” joining together with proud smiles on their faces. Last Christmas and New Year seasons gave a reason to throw bigger parties together with all the startups and the management team. Surprise Santa came to visit and some of our eager beaver-entrepreneurs performed songs, the whole “village” of startups converged wearing Santa hats, playing music and giving Christmas it’s true meaning at the campus.

Shiju has his MBA from SPJIMR, Mumbai, Chitra is a graduate in Commerce from Anna University, Chennai and Prashant has MBA from TAPMI, Manipal. While working at Wipro Technologies, Singapore, by investing a mere sum of Rs 3000, Shiju launched the first website of iTraveller.

It’s one of the first few companies to get incubated at Startup Village. The firm has been able to achieve its traction by handling an average of 200 clients, clocking about Rs 40 lakh in revenue every month. This year, the company expects to reach Rs 4 crore in annual sales. The leading team of Startup Village, which includes Sijo Kuruvilla and Sanjay Vijayakumar has always been the guiding force. One of the most important aspects of iTraveller is that it’s not a one-stop-alltravel-services-shop. FEBRUARY 2013
reeman Murray has been in India the past seven years exploring how to help young people here create technology enabled businesses. The second generation technology entrepreneur believes that Internet revolution belongs to the youth. Freeman holds the view that technology favours the young. His latest implementation, Startup School, works as a bridge between the student world and the world of the startup founder. “We have started our first batch in January. We are a startup too, and are very much learning how to do what we want as we do it. We care deeply about our mission. We have confidence that with perseverance we will figure it out and consistently graduate young professional software engineers with viable technology companies,” Freeman Murray reveals.
f
Freeman Murray speaks I’ve come to feel that helping young people in India start technology companies is the most important thing I could be doing with my life right now. Startups are important to India as they create jobs, increase technical competence of the work force, and address vital problems the world faces. India is at a unique moment right now. On one hand, ubiquitous
3G Internet availability and low cost Android phones are creating a second wave of Internet adoption here with crores of new Internet users coming online in India and across the world. The desire to participate in the IT revolution is now deeply embedded in the culture as careers and fortunes have been made on IT in India for three decades. Young people here have been watching the startup ecosystem blossom in Silicon Valley where NRIs represent a significant portion of the talent pool. Taking a cue from the success of the Indians in other places, we should be able to emulate that success here. For many years, India has leveraged its low cost of living to cost compete with the global IT work force. While this brings in immediate revenue and helps the workforce gain experience, it leaves us perpetually competing with other inexpensive regions around the world that come online and bid on the same projects. Dependent on the whims of foreign bosses and swings in distant economies we lack self determination. We help people break their ideas into milestones and then to break those down into achievable tasks they can work on each day. This is really what software engineering is all about.
Young people here have been watching the startup ecosystem blossom in Silicon Valley. taking a cue from the success of the Indians in other places, we should be able to emulate that success here
snapshot
My observations Very few software engineers in the world can live as cheaply as programmers who live like students. Rather than underbidding everyone else in the market to build websites and mobile applications for businesses abroad, more youngsters should leverage their familiarity with Internet and mobile technology to solve problems. New tools, frameworks and devices coming out all the time that people have to learn ‘how to use’, thereby reducing the advantage long time incumbents have. Because of this formal education in India and around the world does a poor job at providing people with the specific skills they need to work effectively. Internet has evolved incredibly rich freely available classes and tutorials designed specifically to help people learn ‘how to use’ technologies. This is how people everywhere get established in this field. While everything you need to learn and create a technology startup is freely available on the Internet, not many people have sufficient self motivation to learn and do everything necessary to create a successful startup. Doing a startup turns out to be a great way to really understand and get good at software engineering

FEBRUARY 2013
Quick Read eddings are occasions when the whole family, relatives and friends join and spend a wonderful time together. Indians with their close knitted community life, not only want to make it a big affair, but also explore ways to make it unique. Apart from the rocking and fun sessions, a revival of old traditions seem to overpower nowadays. Many of the traditions are passé now, but their revival along with customizations is the latest. Let’s revisit the traditions of a typical Malabar Muslim (Moplah) wedding which have a lot of traditions unlike Muslims in other parts of Kerala. There is coalescence of the North Indian Muslim Weddings and the Arabian. This is mainly due to the influence of the Persian and Arabian traders who settled there once and their descendents living here.
W
Wedding RITUALS Engagement In Muslim community the bride and groom meet each other only after the consent of both families. A ‘valayidal’ function will be conducted as the groom’s family visits the girl’s house and presents her with a bangle symbolizing the engagement. The marriage date will be
Nikaah-The Muslim wedding ritual called Nikkah is a contract between the groom and the bride’s father. This usually takes place at the bride’s house and the groom arrives in a grand manner accompanied by his family, friends and musicians. Bride’s father and the groom (wali’s) exchange vows in front of the Maulvi (priest) who then reads selected verses from the Quran. The boy’s side proposes and the girl’s side conveys her consent which is given in front of witnesses. The groom gives nuptial gift - Mehar to the bride (money as previously decided) and the contract is registered by “Nikaahnaama” (a document). After this, the guests and families move out to halls or the venue for feast. The bride will be revealed to the guests and the bridegroom meets each other at this time. Traditionally, the bride makes the entrance covered with a ‘mekatti’ and girls singing songs and dances accompanying her. The couples are allowed to see each other through a mirror first. The bridegroom will be given a glass of milk, which is supposed to drink together.
fixed then and the relatives of the bride in return present the groom with cash and gold. This will be followed by a Quran recital.
Pre wedding Ceremonies Muslim Weddings are the most elaborate in Kerala both in terms of feasting and ceremonies. Traditionally, wedding celebrations start two days before the marriage. Arikuthu: Close relatives of both families gather at the respective houses and make
arrangements of the cereals for the wedding day. Also known as ‘cheriperukkku’ they crush rice in ‘urals’ and pack them together singing songs and having fun. Nowadays it is done symbolically. This will be followed by an elaborate feast with special dishes for the day.

Haldi This is a North Indian tradition. The bride and the groom will be at their respective houses and their friends and relatives apply haldi (turmeric) on their hands and feet. They sing traditional songs and have fun while applying. After a bath, they will be adorned in dazzling attires and with traditional ornaments for ‘Mylanchi’.
Muslim Weddings are the most elaborate in Kerala both in terms of feasting and ceremonies
Mylanchi (Mehendi) Groom’s sisters along with some women come to the bride’s house to take part in “mylanchi”. The bride dressed ornately will be seated in the middle covering her head and bowed in shyness. They adorn the bride’s hands and legs with intricate mehendi designs and sing “mappilapattu” teasing her beauty, her groom and the new life. They also play “oppana” (traditional dance). Bride’s friends and relatives will put mehendi on one hand and the groom’s people on the other hand. A similar function takes place at groom’s house also. Instead of applying mehendi on hands, it is put on the top of a leaf which the groom holds in his palm. Each member from the groom’s family in turn put mylanchi on the bride’s hand and similarly at the groom’s house too. This is intended 60

What the client says: “We have been living in an individual house since years and a flat concept is new for us. We wanted to make it in a way that the limitations of a flat should not be felt. Say cheese with tigers A visit to the Tiger Temple in Thailand gives you an opportunity to pamper tigers! Text Rebecca Chandy Photography Various Sources
looked at my friends nervously as a monk approached me with a tiger cub and carefully placed its head on my lap. My friends with controlled panic gestured and whistled at me to look at the camera. The cub seemed very happy for being petted, and suddenly started purring. Gaining confidence from this experience, I went to pet a fully grown adult tiger. has been allegations that tigers are drugged to make them domicile when interacting with tourists. The tigers I interacted with were definitely not drugged. Couple of them were sluggish because of the midday heat. They sleep during the day and that is just their natural behaviour. Commonly referred to as the Tiger Temple, Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno Forest Monastery in Western Thailand was established in 1994. It has been described as an animal sanctuary though many of the tigers were born there. According to the website, a cub was brought in 1999 after being orphaned by poachers on the Thai-Burmese border. Since then people have brought tigers from all over to the abbot and his staff of 60 to be cared for, and perhaps, released into the wild someday. Over the years, the temple has grown and now offers tourists the opportunity to get up-close and personal with some of its domesticated tigers. Situated just a 30-minute drive from the popular tourist destination of Kanchanaburi, Wat Pa Luangta Bua Yannasampanno Forest Monastery sees plenty of visitors every day. Some come on tours from Bangkok just to see the big cats. The local economic benefit is clear.
Quick read Admission 300 baht (convert to rupees) ($10) as admission fee. For an extra 1000 baht ($33), there will be a “special photograph”the bravest visitors will be posing with a staff member who places a tiger’s head in their lap. Tips Cameras have to be handed over to temple staff, who lead visitors by the hand to visit a number of tigers, taking a minute to squat and strike a pose for a photograph with the striped beauties. No sudden movements, no loud noises and no red clothes are permitted.

he journey was truly an experience for me. Started off in the morning, I drove to Niagara from Cleveland with my cousin. We stopped at Big Bens to have a typical American breakfast which actually made the start more interesting. We crossed Buffalo to reach the falls. We reached Niagara by around 1 pm and we could hear the roar of falls even before we reached there. The distant view was thick milk like cloud which made us realize that we were approaching the falls. After parking the car, we walked to the store nearby to use the washroom. From there, we walked to the observation deck and then went to the boat maid of mist. We were all given disposable coats which covers from

head to toe. The boat was crammed with visitors. We all rushed to the top open deck while some visitors wanted to sit in the covered below deck. The boat travels close to the falls where one can feel the water on us. We really enjoyed the feeling of water sprays on our face. The sight was unique and beautiful. The Niagara River flows fast on the plains and falls off the cliff to form a brilliant white misty water fall. The sheer size and volume of the waterfall make it one-ofits-kind. It falls in two places and they name it the American Falls and the Canadian Falls for obvious reasons. The falls and the river separate Canada and USA. And I visited the American falls.

HOW NOT TO F K UP YOUR VALENTINE

teenageR Teenage lover – People call our relationship, ‘puppy love’. Do you know the difficulties which tag along with it? We cringe for money, punch guys, gets chased by dogs.... all for love. Friends are no longer our priority. Lying to our parents to meet our love, we give reasons like tuitions or combine study to scoot from homes to malls or theatres. And we hostellers escape with the excuse ‘cousin’s birthday party’. Wearing helmets or burqas, we bypass the eyes of our relatives.
Finance
Gifts Due to the turbulent nature of puppy love, it’s advisable to avoid breakable gifts. If you choose to take such risks, be prepared to have it flung at you in a fit of hysterics for a multitude of bizarre reasons. If you are a miser/scrooge, always remember to remove price tags of cheap gifts.
Spot to celebrate Your romantic route can be to a restaurant. Typically, a restaurant free from local insect and bacterial life is recommended. A private pool party with other lover couples would be the other fish to fry.
Etiquettes When receiving a gift, always be grateful. tThere is no harm in saying ‘This was something I have been looking for since ages.’ It might fetch you an extra hug or more. You can always drop less subtle hints for gift ideas in the future.

Long distant relationships Talk for hours over the phone with at least two recharge cards under your tear- soaked pillow. Be free, if not the warm weather could turn into showers. Guys! Don’t steam yourself in an uncomfortable outfit, and girls….picking up short skirts for the day, better have stockings to avoid the unpleasantness of stickiness.

Newlyweds We really need not take pains to convey to the people around you that, ‘we are newlyweds’. Our face mirrors that we are on top of the world. And so are our gentle expressions to each other. You know right it’s a new start and we enjoy each other’s company ‘coochikooing’, whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears. We know that the married middle-aged who no longer get to experience this newness, envy us. They sarcastically refer to our bond as ‘peak of mushiness’. It’s a case of sour grapes.
Gifts A tech-savvy couple could get an electronic couple T-shirt that features life bar of hearts. Spot to celebrate –Living room with a valentine makeover, with perfumed candles and soft music would be aromatic one. Avoid going overboard though; you only want to ignite a fire in the heart, not the curtains.
Etiquettes If your spouse is willing to spend, let them spoil you. Asking ‘Can we afford it spoils the spark. Ladies! You are sheep headed if you are about to say, ‘Mr. X is taking Mrs. X for a cruise.’
Long distant relationships A pleasant surprise by a quick visit would be a change for both. If not, shower each other with texts, calls or flowers.
Finance Cash in your wallet is not going to multiply, so stop squeezing notes at the restaurant table.
Grooming Ditch bright lip colours on this day, as V- kiss might turn you into a clown. Men not used to wearing ties, cut off that strangulating look.

Ten Years of Marriage With no excitements or mysteries left, at times life is depressing. If we take the ‘seven year itch’ test, the results might be hilarious with least pluses and more minus. ‘Marriage is all about adjustments’. Inspite of the bickering or tiffs for no rhyme or reason, we still love each other. We often repeat the line, ‘Can’t take it anymore’, even if we don’t mean what we say. Knowing that it is just a passing phase before we celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary, we move on.

Gifts Be wise when picking gifts. If not they might look at it with an expression, ‘Oh! What was the need for you to get this for me’?
Spot to celebrate A day at a spa, followed with some food, leisure and sun set by the sea side would be a great idea. Smile, as it’s time to flaunt your curves.
Etiquettes No chewing with your mouth open or burping while on the table, its bad manners. Men! Planning to celebrate at a restaurant, hold the door and pull out a chair for her majesty.

An hour of royal snubbing was enough for Tommy to lose his cool. He started whining, but of no avail. He stood up to express his grief by running into the living room, jumping onto the expensive Italian sofa. His expression was like ‘now you lend me your ears’ and began to scratch the furniture. All eyes turned at him. Loud words didn’t bother him to stop his ongoing menace. Mr. Nambiar went up to him in rage. For the smack he got, Tommy reacted with resentment by improper intake of food for the next whole day. Finally to console him,

FEBRUARY 2013
Have reasonable expectations If your child can barely squeak out a syllable, it’s probably too early to worry about whether he/she can ask nicely for something.
Make your expectations clear For eg: say to your child, “When you are sitting at the table I expect you to sit nicely.” Work on one or two good behaviour skills Too many rules can come across as nagging, and he/she may tune them out.
kind of person that others will like and respect. However, following rules to nurture polite behaviour may not make sense to a child. From a young child’s point of view, learning to use manners can be a confusing experience, say experts. How to calm your kids? Help him work out what he’s feeling: After your child has calmed down from a tantrum, gently talk him through it. Ask him what was bothering him. Teach him to empathise: If your child hits, bites or kicks, get down to his level and calmly ask him how he would feel if someone did that to him. Teach him how to calm down, not up: Deep breathing is an easy technique young children can use to defuse anger Operate a zero-tolerance policy: Do not tolerate aggressive behaviour at all. As with every other aspect of parenting, consistency is the key.
Praising your child for using manners can go a long way toward helping him develop social skills
Your child may pick up bad habits from a rude cartoon character or a playmate. Try to supply good examples for your little one to counteract the negative influences. 90
Set a good example Young children learn through copying other people’s behaviour. If the people around them use polite and thoughtful behaviour, they will learn to use it too.
Think beyond preschool manners Teaching by example, like sitting at the table until others have finished eating, is how you want your child to act.
ules are confusing for most toddlers. But with a few lessons, including something as simple as smiles they will see how “please” and “thank you” can pave the way for rewards in the future. From the time that your toddler can interpret your facial expressions and tone of voice—a smile, a nod, a shake of your head or a spoken word—she/he can begin to learn good manners. Inculcated early, good manners will become a part of the child’s normal behaviour and they will carry them throughout their life. Teach your child that good manners is about considering the feelings of other people, and being the

toward body, finish with feet flat on the ball Advanced: (a) Arms held against the chest (b) roll ball with left leg only (c) roll ball with right leg only
Training on the Ball forces you to use muscles that stabilise and control the body’s position. Exercises progress from simple to complex by placing the body in a more ‘unstable’ balance position. This forces the musculature to activate and stabilise the joints and body. Swiss Ball exercises are used to develop: • Core strength in the muscles of the trunk. • Good postural alignment. • Smooth and controlled movement through the kinetic chain by activating muscles fixed to the trunk. • Joint stability and control • Flexibility and range of motion. priyanka chopra Valentine’s Day is definitely a marketing ploy. Painted red, the ‘brand’ itself is worth billions of dollars now. But in our conservative State, this is one of the few opportunities for our solitary reapers to gather some courage with a ‘red’ rose. Jacob Rohan Asst VP
“How can you call such a celebration to be a marketing gimmick? People are not fools to spend loads of money and time on this day without knowing its importance in their life. In a busy life, keeping aside such a day for celebrating love is very essential. It binds relationships, be it of the married or of lovers” Eldose V Paul Operations Engineer
“I don’t believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in a commercial aspect. This day gives you an opportunity to reveal your love. Lovers consider this as an auspicious day to unite and share their intense feelings of love. Marketing gimmicks will work out only among those who act as real lovers” Ashwanth Jayaraj HR manager

FWD Life readers respond to the topic“Valentine’s Day: Genuine love or marketing ploy?”
Like anything, undoubtedly Valentine’s Day has also attained marketing status. Where is genuine love in this event? Getting a red rose doesn’t reflect the depth of deep love. For most youngsters, it’s another reason to celebrate and chill out at clubs in the name of love. Nithyan Martin Marketing Professional
I don’t think there is a need to figure out a day to express your love to your beloved unless it’s a special day in their personal life; like birthday. Over the years, Valentine’s Day has become a ‘commercial’ event glorified by business establishments. Miriam Mathew Project Manager
