t a time of deficit public resources, providing quality, affordable early childhood education falls to the bottom of the priority list. Unless there is a paradigm shift in public understanding about the economics of raising the next generation, India will continue to neglect the early care and development of children. Eleventh five year plan acknowledged that investments in childhood education are a wise investment as it pays off significant returns to children, our future citizens. While the first day at school is in many ways a remarkable day, it being the first instance of social acknowledgement, it most often leaves the kids, unfounded with the usual concerns of fitting in and delivering. Hope our kids look forward to the ride, to the challenges that will be encountered, to the failures that will be faced, to the memories that will be made, to the bonds that will be forged.

Experience with different generations… It’s a great learning while working with old generation directors. I had my debut in Bharathan’s film “Chilambu”. It was a different experience in Bharathettan’s school. Had he been alive today, he would have become a director with international appeal. There is lack of seriousness in cinema now. It is made for television. After getting satellite rights, films are made within that budget. The big screen affair has become small screen affair now. You have a mass hero image and a villain image as well. Which role you would enjoy most? It should be a strong character. Villain is actually a supporting actor. Supporting actors are also important in films. Today’s cinema is he-

You can see it in my successful films like “Chanda”, “Dada”, “Kadal” etc. Do you think the film industry has exploited your talent as an actor? ‘Definitely not’. I was also part of parallel cinemas like “Sayanam” and “Aparahnam”. I had a good role in “Vyshali” and in “Yugapurushan” I portrayed the character of Ayyankali. Moreover, I have acted in five different languages.

What change did the award winning film “Aparahnam” (1991) bring in your career? As an actor it was a milestone. The film and my performance were

appreciated in international circuits. But I won’t run after awards. My performance in “Vyshali”, “Sayanam” and “Aparahnam” could have been considered for awards. There may be other reasons for not considering me for awards. Adoor Gopalakrishnan has s aid that “Aparahnam” is one of the best 10 films made in Malayalam.

Babu Antony has done over 175 movies and has made his presence felt in all South Indian movies, that includes Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Upcoming movies of Babu Antony are Aashiq Abu’s ‘Idukki Gold’ and Salim Ahmed’s ‘Moonnam Naal Njayar’ Babu Antony’s Russian-American wife Katrina who is an accomplished pianist will lend her voice for a song in the movie’ Piano’ which is his directorial debut.

Looking back, do you feel your selection of films has caused hiccup in your career? Not really. I have selected mostly good films. I was selective also. In my action films there won’t be any unnecessary violence or sex scenes. Those films were family entertainers. That’s why people and children alike ask me when I will be doing an action film.

of life FWD Life traces prominent special schools in Kerala and their activities in bringing up differently-abled children to the mainstream

‘Maa’ a Tamil movie released in 2010 had differently-abled actors and crew behind it. It was directed by Fathima Beevi, who is largely confined to a wheelchair and had music by the visually impaired composer, G Karthik. Amudha Rajini, who was afflicted by polio, choreographed the songs while SR Rao, who lost a leg, shot the entire movie. Dr. TMN Deepak, vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Handicapped Federation played the hero.

Text K.R. Rejeesh Photos Various Sources* child’s birth kindles thousands of dreams in parents’ mind. They tend to dream about his growth and bright future. Irrespective of one’s social and economic status, all parents want their children to lead a comfortable life. But when they realize at one stage of the child’s growth that he/she is not like other children, needless to say, they are shattered. The perturbing fact is that in Kerala there is a considerable increase of children afflicted with disorders like mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, childhood

mental illness, multiple disabilities and learning disorders. The report submitted by M.K. Jayaraj Commission, a one-member commission appointed by the State Government to study about the problems faced by mentally challenged children, reveals that it is high time we accepted this truth. Bringing up such children wouldn’t be a doddle for parents. In such a situation, they rely on special schools for differently-abled children. There are over 300 special schools in Kerala. Of them, 275 are government recognized. M.K.

Jayaraj, who is also the principal of State Institute for Mentally Challenged (SIMC), Pangappara, Thiruvananthapuram, told FWD Life that the inmates at SIMC included 30 orphans and people from other States as well. “There are 135 children in the school and we have 56 staff. Everything is free of cost here. Most children belong to poor families,” he said. The government recognized institutions get a grant of Rs 10 crore annually. As many as 55 special schools get grant from the centre. “If detected before three years of age, their disability could be reduced to 85%.” So early intervention is vital,” he said.

Special schools provide training to mentally challenged people as per their skills. Once they complete training, placements also will be offered. “We don’t have provision to give accommodation to inmates once they reach 18-years. After mastering a profession they will be sent along with their parents. But for orphans, leading a normal life will be an uphill task. I have suggested in my report about setting up a Rehabilitation Village for mentally challenged people in all districts,” added M.K. Jayaraj. Meanwhile, he narrated a heart-breaking incident to us. A mother from Idukki cried in front of Jayaraj and asked if SIMC could adopt her three daughters afflicted with autism. “The girls are above 18-years. The

mother was anxious about the safety of her daughters. I had limitations as we are not taking up adolescent people. So the Rehabilitation Village would be a solace for such people,” Jayaraj pointed out.

Ray of light As you enter the Science and Technology Museum, Thiruvananthapuram, the beautiful and sprawling garden is a visual treat for the eyes. And the hard work behind this achievement is by ten differently-abled students of SIMC who were posted as gardeners at the institute. Among them, 24-year-old Sajeev won the Best Employee Award from the President in 2011. According to Jayaraj, companies are not

Autism It has been four years since actor Bindu Murali started Amma Centre for Autism, Studio Road in Thiruvananthapuram. Her eldest son is afflicted with autism and it was her experience as a mother that led her to start a school for children affected with autism. “There are 23 inmates and 16 of them stay in the school. Their age group is between 6-years and 39-years. The school is run in a rented house. Now that the owner has asked us to vacate the house, I am planning to buy a plot to set up the school,” said Bindu Murali. There is a dearth of trained teachers in schools for mentally challenged children. “You can’t expect people to work for measly wages. It’s very difficult to manage such children if you don’t have the patience,” she said. The school has students from Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Changanassery and Varkala. Rejeesh Photo Naseef Gafoor t the outset, actor Babu Antony made it clear. “I want my photograph to look different,” he said. He doesn’t want to pose wearing a regular suit. in cinema. All through the conversation, when he talked about good cinema and director Bharathan the nostalgia was palpable on his face. Babu Antony can be included in the category of actors who have given innovative mannerisms to villain characters. “I believe an actor should have a mind to adopt any character. The king in “Vyshali”, Sulthan in “Chanda” and Nandakumar

in “Aparahnam” are all contrast roles. In Bharathettan’s movies I have done three different characters. With my entry there was a trend change for negative roles. “I portrayed villain characters in a silent and subtle way,” says Babu Antony. “I was hesitant to do scenes like rape and molesting women. It was a trend then. Even after I have done all this, a few directors here don’t know what I am capable of. We have

Excerpts Experience with different generations… It’s a great learning while working with old generation directors. Today’s cinema is he-

ro-centric and it turns into a mono-act. When I was doing hero characters, all supporting actors also had equal importance. It’s a pyramid structure.

The film and my performance were

different. I believe in traditional filmmaking. There is no new generation and old generation films,” explains Babu Antony. “I am not blaming anyone. How many good film institutes do we have to teach cinema here? So where do they go?” asks the soft-spoken actor.

appreciated in international circuits.

Excerpts contd. How did you cope with the controversies in your movie career? I am a straight forward human being. I won’t mind such things. It was scheming in the film industry by a few people. They exaggerated things. They have tried to attack me in different ways. But the people here know me very well. They are watching everything. Tell us about your creative side… I write poetry and stories. Basically I am a painter. I had interest in photography too, I planned to join National Film Institute, Pune to

During my visit to the institute in the evenings for the film screenings, I made friends there, including director Rajkumar Hirani, Sriram, Mohan et al. About your directorial venture? The shoot will commence in August. It’s been my dream for 15 years. It’s a love story between a poet and a lady musician. The story revolves around three generations. I will be doing the poet’s role.

About your fitness regime… Two-hours workout everyday and strict diet. No bingeing. Your definition of ‘love’... Sacrifice. When you find the person you love and if your love is not reciprocated, don’t force them and follow them. Move away… About future projects… New film “Buddy”is getting ready for release. “Idukki Gold” by Aashiq Abu and a Tamil film produced by Dhanush are other films.

Yes, the shoot of ‘Gurudhakshina’ by director Kiran Phadnik will begin by May 25 at locations in and around Kolkota and Tibet. The shoot is going to be exciting and some of the spots are believed to be inhabited by naxalites. The movie is based on something like a triangular love story, with some unusual twists and dramas. The role which I am being offered must be good. But there are some people to whom I am obliged to. Lijo Pellissery, director Diphan are some of them for whom I would do any role without thinking twice, as they are the ones who have encouraged and tried to lift me up in the industry. I have been told, ‘You have to change your physique. How can you act with muscles?’ And during times of cricket club practise before CCL, I have heard some say, ‘his batting is just a fluke’. Travel After watching a Bollywood movie, I wish to visit Spain someday

What makes you say that you are not happy with the roles offered in the Malayalam industry? As a fresher I am happy with roles offered to me in Malayalam. But I think I am getting better roles in Tamil. Offers from other ‘woods’….. Discussions are on and I’m going through a variety of scripts. What can audience look for in the movie ‘Weeping Boy’? It’s a movie that carries a social message, a significant one. It doesn’t get preachy, nor does it deviate into the sermonizing mode. The film is the directorial debut of Felix who tries to convey a message on social commitment. It has Sreenivasan playing the lead role. The shoot is scheduled to begin by May 20 at Pollachi. Your role in the movie ‘Hangover’.... ‘Hangover’ is a comedy-thriller based on the life of four friends, starring Bhagath, Maqbool Salman, Shine, Archana Gupta. It’s Sreejith Sukumaran’s (Associate director of Kamal) directorial debut. The movie comes with the tagline of “Avasinikkune illa” (The Hangover doesn’t end). The shoot is on. My role is crucial to the plot. Prefer character/glamour roles..... I like to try different roles and would prefer to do more glamorous characters. hour or more. On seeing my favourite dish.... I wouldn’t abstain from it saying, ‘Oh! I will put on weight’. How would you dress for an award night? Until recently it was me who handled my wardrobe, but lately I have a stylist who decides what I should be wearing for events. But personally, I would like to be in a sari, adorned with junk jewellery. As I’m not a lover of gold, I prefer to be accessorized in artificial dingly dangly accessories. If a man suspiciously follows you in the dark, what would you do? For sure I won’t get into an argument with him. If it’s a deserted place I would manage to move over to a public place where there are people around or try to ring up my brother, who usually accompanies me when I go out. Though he is younger to me, whenever I go out late, he is my bodyguard. Do you like to travel? When I was a student, during my vacations I used to visit hill stations and so far I have been to Kodaikanal, Ootty, Munnar. I like to travel and lately after watching a Bollywood movie, I wish to visit Spain someday. Are you a movie buff? I wasn’t. During my school days I have hardly watched four or five films, the first being ‘Ee Purazhayum Kadannu’. But as I got into anchoring, I realized how important it was for me to update my movie knowledge. And now after entering the industry, whenever I get time, I watch films.

The 17-minutes long movie released on YouTube on March 24, 2013 is a conversation between a feminist and an ogler. Talking about the plot of the movie that has created a buzz-online Basil says a person whom we know for years can surprise us with an opposite attitude someday. “When I was in Mysore undergoing training, there was this guy in our gang; gentle by nature, a gem of a person. But one day when he opened up his life’s story narrating it like a hero, we were shocked. Even being friends we failed to understand how fake he was. But let me tell you this incident hasn’t inspired me to make this short film. It’s a message to all to take things with a pinch of salt.” Aju Varghese who plays the main protagonist in the movie says that the short film is a satire on modern society, it is a creative initiative put forth by a group of ‘Infy’ engineers aspiring to be a part of the film fraternity someday. In it I play the role of ‘Liju’, who irritates the hell out of ‘Clara’ a character who hides her true colours

Your time at the New York Film Academy….. As I was working in NY, I found time to attend a three months workshop at the film academy. Memorable experience on the sets when you visited your mother during her days in Malayalam cinema….. I hardly visited her on the sets. I was seven, when I once visited the set that also had late actress Sukumari auntie. Seeing me she came up for a chat, but in no time the director called her for the next shot. I saw her completely changing her real self for the character. Eloquently narrating the high intense monologue, she came back to me as though nothing happened. I was shocked then, but today in her absence I say she was a legendary artiste.

The movie narrates the life of tribal people, and how they got integrated to the mainstream society. I had to stay with the real-life tribals in the outskirts of Palakkad for a week to learn their mannerisms, dress style and gestures. The crew was supportive. However, transformation from an airhostess to a shy tribal girl was a huge challenge. The responsibility was little high, as I had to keep up with the expectations of my director. Also, acting in front of hundreds of spectators is not easy.

Temple sans idols Rituals have the magic to leave us amused. Let’s have a look at some of the odd religious rituals being followed in temples Text K.R Rejeesh Photography FWD Media t was a scorching day, From a distance the road that leads to the hilltop temple seemed like a thick dark line drawn across the slanting land. We had more than one reason to visit Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada temple, located in Kunnathoor Taluk of

I

Kollam district. It is the sole Duryodhana Temple in Kerala. What aroused our curiosity was the fact that there are no idols in the temple and they follow bizarre rituals! The puja offerings include tuber crops, kaachil (Greater yam), aval (rice flakes) and malar (fried paddy). Describing the rituals, S.K. Govinda Pillai, the secretary of the temple,

The Gold Flag (Swarnakkodi) is the status symbol of Malanada Appooppan. Made in pure gold, it is a precious show piece of excellent workmanship. Public “darshan” of Swarnakkodi is permitted only on auspicious days like Kodiyettu Day, Malakkuda Maholsavam Day etc. It is believed that the “darshan” of the Swarnakkodi brings home prosperity. People believe that ‘Pallippana’, a ritual at Malanada Temple, is capable of eliminating the evil spirits afflicting the deity and its land and people. At Malanada this ritual is performed once in 12 years. Next Pallipaana will be held in April, 2023. Kettukazhcha is the most splendid part of the Maha Malakkuda Maholsavam with a spectacular display of craftsmanship in the form of ‘Edupu kala’ and ‘Edupu kuthira’.

Offerings at a glance The votive offerings include toddy, murukkan (betel nut mixture), hen, goat, and frolic with ox. Goat and hen are only made to stand in front of the deity as an offering. There is no killing of animals in the name of God. The temple is open for 24 hours. The priest is from Kurava community. There is no deity and Sreekovil in the temple Malanada Temple is said to be the sole Duryodhana Temple in the country Things for the votive offerings are available at the temple.

The temple is reachable from Kayamkulam and Karunagappally by NH 47 and Kottarakkara (via Puthoor or Enathu) by MC Road (approximately 25 km). said the puja in the temple is based on Dravidian tradition. “The temple has the chaithanya (power) of Duryodhana and Lord Siva. devotees address the supreme power as “Apooppan” (grandfather). So the God here is known as Malanada Apooppan,” he said. According to mythology, after sending Pandavas for vanavasam, Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kauravas, had arrived in this place in search of them. The major festival of the temple, Malakkuda Mahotsavam, falls in March. People from seven karas (regions) participate in the festival, by arranging their kettukazha (decorations in the form of horses) in the vast tract of paddy field below the hill temple. Interestingly, the devotees comprise people from all religion.

nutrition

food habits

Tackle your

fussy eater Studies prove that healthy breakfast plays a major role in school activities and improves concentration Text Lekshmy Vijayan ife-style disorders are fast becoming a major cause for health related issues. Unhealthy eating habits,

l

stress and lack of proper sleep has taken a toll even on our children. Our Nutrition expert Gayathri Ashokan advises on adopting and adapting to

healthy life style to prevent life threatening ailments.

Morning in a hurry…. How do you make your child eat? Studies prove that healthy breakfast plays a major role in school activities and improves concentration. So 1/3 of the total calories should come from breakfast. Now there is the concept of food plate-which contains a portion of cereals, milk/curd, vegetables especially green leafy vegetables and fruits. But unfortunately most kids skip breakfast and 70% of pre-school children in our country are anaemic. To ensure that your child eats well in the morning, instead of making two or three Dosa or chapathi its better to make it big size, so that instead of counting numbers he / she would consume a better potion. To make it more nutritious you can add some multi grain mix, like soyabean and bengal gram powder to the dough. If it’s difficult to make the child eat the breakfast one can also try some “navadanyapowder” mix with milk, which meets the requirement. A personal recipe I can share is

58

sandwitch filled with sprouted green gram with a pinch of pepper and ½ tsp sauce. It’s easy to prepare and healthy, as it gives enough protein. Make sure you use whole grain bread or wheat bread instead of white bread.

Alternatives that can be given to children for lunch….. Normally mothers give the same lunch prepared for adults to children. However, children may not get enough nutrients from this lunch because their intake is very less. Kids need daily 50gm of vegetables and 50gm of green leafy vegges, so I would suggest a simple recipe anyone can try at home. Cut carrot, beans and cabbage like the shape of finger chips and steam for 5 minutes. Then sprinkle it with a little pepper and salt. Kids really love it, as they like to bite big pieces than smaller ones it’s an attractive tooI, can be given with two chapathis (we can mix leafy vegetablesto dough) or with 200gm rice (brown rice) and curd with a piece of fish/chicken (40gm). Vegetable fried rice with corn, carrot, beans, and

Quick Read curd rice with boiled vegetables provide overall nutrients to the body. Rice along with raitha (mixed with carrot, onion, sprouted green gram, cucumber) is another healthy option. Prepare cutlets in different shapes with lots of green leaves, coriander leaves, chicken, onion etc. It can be given with rice and curd. Once in a week we can try noodles mixed with vegetables, egg, milk can be used instead of water to make it nutritious.

What can be given as snacks for school going children? Our traditional rice flakes and puffed rice are ideal, so we can make it like our ‘temple prasadam’ which give enough dry fruits, fiber and jaggery it contains minerals like iron, zinc etc. A handful of dry fruits and nuts can give enough protein, vitamin E, and other minerals. Boiled sweet corn mixed with a spoon of ghee is another option for snack, kids would love it and it’s very nutritious. Muesli, crushed wheat is also good and provide enough fibre.

Illness caused due to consuming junk food and aerated drinks….. Your kid may demand for an icy aerated drink on a hot summer day, but never buy them the refreshing treat as it is a major health risk in disguise, loaded with sugar and devoid of nutrients. It can give extra calories to put on weight. One tsp of sugar give 20kcal, 1tsp oil give 45kcal but one idly give only 50 kcal. Studies prove that if more carbonated beverage is taken, it could lead to the degradation of bones. It can be experimented by putting a tooth to a bottle of black coloured aerated drink. That will dissolve in one week. And liters of water is needed to wash out the residues from the stomach. Water is an essential nutrient, which is needed daily. We lose about 1-1.5 liters of water daily especially in hot season that must

be replaced. Soft drinks can never replace water that is needed to washout toxins from our body. One can replace soft drinks with lime juice, which contain vitamin C, that helps to resist infection. Also try our traditional drink like coconut water, buttermilk, which is packed with lots of nutrients.

After effects of chewing gum…… Saliva contains ptyalin, the enzyme for digesting starch. If we are using more of chewing gum it may results in secretion of other gastric juices which results in acidity or other digestive problems.

Food that causes allergies in children….. As told before, each and every child is different, the allergy may also differ. We should observe the child instead of predicting. Many Keralities have so many concepts like food fads and fallacies. Some kids have milk allergy, due to lactose. Other allergies like gluten allergy, sea food allergy, egg allergy etc are also common; if one food is removed it should be replaced with another. There is a common notion among us that children who are plump are healthy and thin means ill. One should understand that most important thing to ensure is that the child is healthy and active. Check the height and weight periodically and plan a proper diet plan with the help of a nutritionist. Some kids eat enough food but a lot of energy is lost when children are engaged in various activities. It is very important to create nutritional awareness among mothers and encourage them to choose healthy food. This can have a positive effect on the family. Cook your child’s favourite restaurant recipe home and make it healthier. Try new recipes and encourage your child to eat healthy, educate them and ensure your child’s participation while cooking, this will make them more health alert.

Delay introducing 100 percent juice until at least 6 months of age and limit to no more than 4–6 oz/day. Juice should only be fed from a cup. Don’t overfeed infants and young children they can usually self-regulate the amount of calories they need each day. Children shouldn’t be forced to finish meals if they aren’t hungry as they often vary caloric intake from meal to meal. Introduce healthy foods and keep offering them if they’re initially refused. Don’t introduce foods without overall nutritional value simply to provide calories.

BONUS Only 20 per cent children age 6-23 months in India are fed appropriately according to all three recommended practices for infant and young child feeding. 70 per cent children age 6- 59 months are anaemic. Children of mothers who are severely anaemic are seven times as likely

to be severely anaemic as children of mothers who are not anaemic. O nly half (51 per cent) of households use adequately iodizesalt in India.

education schooling

Back to

School reparing your child for school is a daunting task especially if the child is a first time school goer. Days could be nerve-wracking and mornings could be a mayhem if things lack planning. But a little effort and understanding from parents can prepare a child for his or her milestone.

P

Preparing Kid for 1st Time School (Do’s) Start preparations at least a week before.

Tell your child about the excitement of going to school. Make him or her understand that school is not just about studies but also about learning fun exercises, colouring, and making new friends. Parents must take their children on a tour to the school he/she is about to join. Visit the school premises, its playground or recreation classes much before the first day. To a great extend this would help to reduce anxiety in kids. Nature calls! Habituate them to use restrooms. Tell that at school, he/she wouldn’t have mamma around to assist and that it’s quite common to have an accident at school. So prepare your child for that mess by telling him to alert the teacher to the situation. Explain about snack and lunch time. Ask your son or daughter what they like to have.

Tell them about siesta, the hardest part of school difficult for a four year old to bear. Practice them to get some sleep by listening to a bedtime story or by hearing some soothing music. Try to build partnerships with teachers, administrators and other parents. This helps your child reap benefits at the personal and educational front. Children are much happier and confident when they receive pats and hear praises. So for some smart behavior or actions of your little one, applaud and give surprises once in a while as a token of encouragement that helps to build confidence.

Quick read Helpful tips for the Big Day Provide your child with a healthy breakfast before school. Dress up your child in the most comfortable way. Label your child’s belongings Keep a pair of spare clothes in his/her school bag Make sure the teacher is aware of any allergies your child has On reaching school, to cheer up a gloomy face, take your child for a stroll around the school premises Do reassure your child that you will be back at a given time. Remind your child to follow directions, to play safe, and to be obedient. Check if the school provides clean environment, pure and hygienic drinking water and neat and clean rooms.

Preparing Kid for 1st Time School (Dont’s) Never get into an argument with your child before setting out for school. Don’t be late to school

Avoid over feeding your child on his/her first day Parents! Avoid pouring out praises and concern about your child to the teacher. He/she is just one among the other children Don’t linger around once school starts. It distracts your child’s concentration Never carry your child’s belongings that make him/her appear to be too special Don’t leave your child at school without bidding goodbye or by not giving hugs Parents! Your child might cry on his first day at school, but you dare not cry along. Hold back your tears. Lecturing- This is one mistake parents often make, rather than going on and on make it a conversation. Listen to the child, this will make them feel respected and valued.

BONUS

Tricks to Feed Kids

M ake a smiley in a bowl full of whole grain cereal with b anana slices for eyes, raisins for nose, peach or apple slice for mouth. Take your child along while going for shopping. Let them see different kinds of fruits and vegetables and decide on what he/she needs to have. Try fruit smoothies for a quick healthy breakfast or afternoon snack. Add extra veggies to soups, stews, and sauces, grated or shredded to make them blend in.

Imposing- Don’t impose your decisions on children; give them options to chose from. Judging- Don’t be in a hurry to judge your child’s behavior. Most of the time there can be an underlying reason for ‘difficult behavior’ which should be addressed through understanding. Denying- Most of the parents ignore their child’s limitations. Understand that nobody is perfect. Accept your child’s flaws. This can make your child confident and work through his limitations. Depending- Never make the child rely on you for anything and everything, accept his/her individuality and help your child become self sufficient and independent.

Is your kid ready for school? Find out….

Colour Scheme Zakir and his family have a special liking for white colour. “White exudes a positive energy” says Zakir. The colour scheme of the house was modern with an all enveloping white, custom-built white furniture matching with the whole interiors. “As all whites will give a clinical feel, earthy tones were added with veneer. This further emphasised the all pervading whiteness of the house” says Cindu. The white furniture takes the centre stage and the earthy tones around it accentuates it.

Colour Inspired

Wedding The colours you choose for your wedding theme may represent you and your groom’s personality if it is your favourite colour. Text Dhanya Menon Photos Tamarind Weddings, Kochi colour inspired wedding will help to create an ambience and mood for your wedding celebration. Colour also lends a symbolic meaning to the wedding celebrations. The colours you choose for your wedding theme may represent you and your groom’s personality if it is your favourite colour. The colour you choose may also hold a special meaning like it can stand for your relationship, the season to which the wedding falls, or even a complement to your wedding theme. FWD wedding of the month is a Royal Blue Inspired Wedding planned by the duo Arabind

A

Chandrashekaran Pillai and Anu Arabind from Tamarind Weddings for a NRI couple based out of Kottayam

Blue Wedding of Mishal and Teenu The theme of this wedding was ‘Royal Blue’. Blue is a popular wedding colour and is nature inspired (sky and the sea). Blue invokes an environment of calmness. Blue also signifies royalty. Variants of blue like the electric blue and brilliant blue are very energetic colours and create a dynamic, dramatic and engaging space.

Things to note for a colour theme wedding Having more than three colours will not always work in a colour theme wedding as it distract the eyes from the main colour. The best way is to use one base colour and compliment it with one or two other complementary shades. When deciding on a wedding colour palette, playing up the prominent colours of your venue or setting will be a god idea. For instance, if your wedding is by the sea or by a pool side, the natural choice can be blue colour. Similarly if you are planning it in a garden, green is the best choice. Before deciding the colour, figure out the mood you want to reflect throughout the celebration. Whether you want a peaceful, Zen-like retreat, a regal, romantic affair or a blitzy, high-energy party? Colourful cloths and overlays for décor are very important and so is table accessories and centre pieces. Lighting can make or break a space. Talk to your designer about the lighting. Lighting is also tricky; you can work well with it to showcase cool crisp angles.

Blue colour theme can be used in several ways to give the desired effect. For example, in winters, dark and blues can add a feeling of warmth, light blue can be matched with a seaside theme, it goes on. Royal blues paired with whites, light purples, sunny yellows and shades of cream create a stunning combination.

What was the theme suggested to the family? It was a glorious theme which matched the couple’s taste. We had suggested this theme in consultation with the family. This theme was a theatrical representation of the couple’s tastes. Both Teenu and Mishal are vibrant individuals who wanted their wedding to be a show-stopper. They wanted a wedding theme which would showcase their personalities. Both Mishal and Teenu were intimately involved in planning the elements of the wedding. Their affinity towards the colour ‘Blue’ came from the association the colour had with royalty.

How the theme elements were incorporated? We wanted to incorporate the Royal Blue theme into every element of the wedding. We had erect-

The wedding cake was based on a peacock feather design which accentuated the blue element. The ceiling centre piece was lit up with strip lights. The centre pieces and table wear were also bluish purple in shade to match the hall décor. The ambiance for the function was set by dim lighting and soft music. The centrepieces at the tables were candelabras with cut glass work and candles. Blue-tinted lamps were also used to spread soft blue light into the function. Violet and white daisies complemented the centrepieces. The couple wanted the theme to be reflected in the transportation as well. The car was decorated with ornamental blue and white roses. The complete ambiance was transformed into a delightful set up which was pleasing to the eye, yet extraordinary.

For the eyes, apply a fun metallic colour to the lids and contour it using gray or black. Finish off with a line of black eyeliner and mascara for pumpedup lashes. Apply a highlighter just below your eyebrows and on the inner corners of your eye to brighten them up. Use shimmer to highlight your cheekbones, chin, T zone and neck. If you’re going to show some skin around your shoulders or collar bone, don’t miss out to brush some of it there as well.

Tips for parents for preparing child for playschool

first day

Before taking admission to nursery, visit personally and collect all information of playgroup or nursery.

first day at school can be tough for both parents as well as for the child, but with a little preparation it can be smoother any parents take admission for their child at the age of two. others prefer to send their kid after age of three or four years. In case of working parents, they do not have any option and therefore they have to send their baby sometimes earlier than the age of two. But, ideally it is advisable that you should send your baby to school at age of three. At the age of three your baby is mature enough to understand her own habits like if she gets hungry, or need water or go for potty. Some babies can wear their shoes and clothes at this age. Such things are not that much important, but it is good habits if your child can understands well before joining playschool or nursery. All children at this age have different nature and tendency to act what they feel. In such case, it is very difficult for parents to prepare their child for playschool or nursery. Parents should act wisely and keep patience to get ready their kids for school. Normally all kids resist to go for school initially; once they get habituated then you should not worry about it. You need to create school environment in home before your baby start to go to school. It will help your baby to get familiar with school’s environment and he/ she can easily adjust in his/her school. Tell him/her that let’s play

Check if they provide clean environment, pure and hygienic drinking water and clean class rooms. You should ask about your child’s security that they cannot move outside school areas or not talk with unknown person.

Few insights on securing child’s future Start investing for children as early as possible. Earlier you start, the more the time available for your investments to grow, and the bigger the corpus. s parents our responsibilities towards children start the day they are born and as responsible parents we want the ‘best’ for our children. The best upbringing, the best education and so on... Start investing for children as early as possible. Earlier you start, the more the time available for your investments to grow, and the bigger the corpus. If you have not done that you can start right away. Your kids may not become what you desired or wished. But a good investment can ensure them financial security. The best gift a parent can give his child is good education. Planning is an essential part of this gift. Education has turned costly in the country and abroad. It will continue to rise in the future. Before planning investment for your kids, assess your family’s financial position. Study the options and talk your friends and family members before taking a decision. Read magazines and newspaper articles on personal finance before talking to others.

a

It will help you to decide a better investment for your children. You can invest a lump sum, put away a regular amount each month, or do both. It’s usual to give the child access to the money when they reach age 18 or 21, but the money can usually remain invested for longer. Most of us opt for Public Provident Fund (PPF) and fixed deposits for our children. For better returns, it is advisable to choose equity mutual funds, stocks. There are also child insurance plans that provide for the education of the child if the parent is no more. It is better to put money different baskets than just one or two baskets. It is obvious that saving for your child’s future will make you overwhelmed. But here, you need to think practically and be realistic while planning for the savings. Make sure you make down-to-earth and reasonable planning and savings. If you set a comfortable goal, you will be able to reach it with regular investments. Invest in such plan that gives your child the money as and when he needs them to

Quick Read accomplish his academic and career dreams. How does one choose the right product? The first thing to understand is that there is nothing to differentiate the investments made for children from the rest of your portfolio of investment. They are exposed to the same risks, offer the same returns and are taxed at the same rate. Your choice should depend on four basic factors: the tenure of the investment, the risk you are willing to take, the returns offered by the option and the taxability of the income. Are you saving for your son’s education or your daughter’s marriage? Financial planners say it is best to define your goals and segregate the investment for each goal. By investing today and being careful in your investment, you will be able to lead a tension free retirement life. Even if you die or face a financial loss, your child’s future will be secured. Your kids will be able to achieve a career goal that will help them settle down comfortably in life. Future is unforeseen and life is uncertain. Planning helps us to have small control over future.

Inflation should always be included as an important factor in investments and intend for higher return with low risk. Make sure the investment instruments you have chosen can be converted to liquid cash at any stage in your child’s life.

Feeding Backyard Birds This Summer The summer has been so bad this year, it was impossible for humans to survive without sun stroke and suns burns, then think about the teeny- weeny birds at your backyard that can hardly find any cool shade in the city. Be kind to them, just as you are to your pets by providing them with adequate water to have a shower as well as to quench their thirst. Many keep backyard birds at bay thinking that they are a nuisance. But try it out, next time when you see one, though they are not tamed, how friendly they tend to get with

humans, once they realise that you are harmless. To feed your feathered friends you can try putting a birdfeeder 12 feet high on a tree or a bush safe from predators. The device can be of plastic or steel because they are easy to clean. You can offer various kinds of seeds, millets, peanuts or suet cakes. Remember to clean and disinfect the feeder regularly. Windows that reflect sky and trees can cause collision for birds, so to prevent crashing, place feeders either more than 30 feet from a window or closer than 3 feet.

Do you have trouble digesting or sleeping? Are inches piling on, is there body odour? Does your skin feeling dead and lifeless? Have you lost the glow? Time to detox. Toxins are anything that causes harmful effects to the body. It could be from the food you eat, air you breathe, water, soil, sounds or even the thoughts you have. Some toxins are created by the body itself. Our body has innate ability to remove many toxins however in current lifestyle and soaring pollution levels we put in more toxins than the body can remove. Over time, this stacks up leading to complications. Detoxification is a process of reducing the toxins in the body by decreasing the toxin intake and aiding the body cleanse itself. Our body eliminates toxins via kidneys, liver, digestive tract (intestines and colon), lungs, and skin. A good detox works on all these organs and leaves you feeling full of energy and with a fresh perspective on your life. I should add that, based on the levels of toxins some people feel feverish and irritable during the process, rest assured that

you are physically and mentally releasing negative things. It is important to do a detox practice under a trained person.

Yoga to Detox Detox flow yoga sequence that includes mantras for detoxing the mind (Ham Sa) breathing practices like Kapalabhati, movements and postures that help you sweat and twist is a good way to detox, lose weight and have a glowing skin. Asanas in detox yoga compress and twist the abdomen. The practice includes poses like the Revolved Triangle (Parivrtta Trikonasan), Twisted Chair Pose (Parivritta Utkatasan), Marichi’s Twist (Marichiyasana) etc.

Twisted Chair Pose (include photo) Stand tall with feet together. Slowly bend your knees sitting back on an invisible chair. If you look down you should be able to see your toes. The stress is on your thighs and not on your knees. The spine stays neutral and the buttocks

should not jut back. Palms are together in prayer pose. Lean forward and now bring your left elbow to the right knee as you breathe out. Stay in this twist for ten seconds. Do not hold your breath. As you inhale come out of the twist and do the other side. The pose is good for strengthening the legs and improving digestion and aligning the spine. Work towards deepening the twist and holding it for 30 seconds.

Talk Shows On Air

93.5 Red FM

Red Carpet ( Saturday 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm, repeat on Sunday 10.00 am to 12.00) It’s a popular celebrity chat show on weekends aired between 3.00 pm and 5.00 pm on Saturdays and 10.00 am to 12.00 noon on Sundays. The show ropes in one-on-one interaction with personalities from the entertainment industry. Listeners catch up to hear celebs getting candid with the energetic and spontaneous RJ Mathukutty, dearly called ‘Ustaad of love’. It’s not like any other show where the celebs are to hold tight to their chairs. The two hour show is noted for its fresh and witty appeal with RJ Mathukutty hosting the show with ease, making the celebs feel at home as they narrate their journey to stardom. It is the show’s friendly environment that makes it score a brownie point. So far the show has aired candid interviews of Mammootty, Dulquer Salman, Indrajth, Fahadh fazil, Rima Kallingal and Mamta Mohandas. Last month on one of the ‘Red Carpet’ episodes, the guest was the superstar himself, Mohanlal revealing his experiences on and off screen about the shoot of ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ and when RJ Mathukutty asked ‘Is Mohanlal a gentleman?’ the actor replied in his usual humors style that ‘I’m a man. I don’t know whether I’m a gentleman. That is for others to say’. Following weekend it was actor Jayaram talking about his new release ‘Bharya Athra Pora’, his fancy to watch ‘Thrissur Pooram’ and his passion for Percussion instrument, Chenda.

Morning No:1 ( Monday to Saturday 7.00 am to 11.00 am) One of the most interactive discussions that woke up the city last month was the drunken driving by heavy vehicle drivers, some of them who were caught red handed at Vytilla junction in Kochi. ‘How often are heavy vehicle drivers being checked for drunken driving?’ This question was left unanswered in us and was open for discussion by RJ Akhil, Government officials and public came up with preventives and out with their own bitter experiences with drunken heavy vehicle drivers on roads. Though the show had plenty of texts and calls pouring in, how easy is it to implement, is a harrowing doubt. The other on-air talks of the month were on unauthorized vendors on streets, the 475 crore investment in digitalization of public distribution system in the state, views about bringing in the auto sharing system in the city; all backed with opinions from

Government officials and views of the public. The RJ always picks fresh topics for discussions and airs them as it is, without editing the content. That is what makes the show special to their listeners. Few days back I’m sure most of us would have heard RJ Akhil in conversation with Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany regarding the Edapally junction block. And to be crisp about public distress, the diplomatic RJ framed a question asking whether it is Edappally, Vyttila, Kundannoor or Palarivattom that urgently needs a flyover? Another shocking revelation that stunned everybody alike was the usage of deadly chemicals like ammonia, formalin added to the process of ice making; the topic was widely discussed on the show. Though many of us already know about it, we are silent to such acts and relish the ‘kulukki sarbath’ on the streets made from chemical ice.

MAY 2013

You have a terrific parenting style. A centred parent happens to judge his or her child harshly. You are trying hard to sharpen your parenting skills, but unfortunately it’s turned down by taking many things to heart.

The Upper-handed Parent (Score 43-60)

Children of upper-handed parents have a motivated sense of discipline. Your parenting style results in forming resentment in your child that leads to lack of confidence making it difficult for them to take independent decisions when they mature. Such children tend to get swayed by the wrong kind of influences that could even damage the relationship between you and your child. Some gentleness, openness and fine-tuning can help you to be a better parent.
