GOOD
OLD FASHIONED SHOPPING
No amount of click - shopping would fetch you the pleasure of a real shopping experience at your favorite store, here is why.

Y
ou have probably been through the ordeal at least once. You spot something nice on an online store, say a pair of pretty shoes, and immediately place an order. You wait expectantly for it to arrive and when it does, you find it nothing close to the display image that you saw on the website. The ends are worn, the finish poor and the quality sub-standard. Haven’t you been there? No, we are not saying that online shopping is absolutely unreliable.
Stores, both conventional and online, have their pros and cons based mostly on the specific needs of the individual shopper. In the recent years, we have certainly witnessed a pronounced uptick in terms of consumers who opt to shop online. E-Commerce, undoubtedly is a rapidly growing industry; but while the internet gives you a gratifying shopping experience, the relevance of a physical store shall remain undiminished. OCTOBER 2015 LH 21
COVER STORY
“The market is not saturated yet, especially so when it comes to the higher end brands. And moreover, as opposed to online stores, conventional stores allow the customers to get a feel of the product before you actually buy it.” Shibu Philips Business Head, Lulu Mall
22 LH OCTOBER 2015
Grab and Run Habitual shoppers would know how much of an instinctive act shopping is. If you spot something, would you really want to wait for three or four working days to bring it home? Wouldn’t you want to grab it, pay for it and run home? The shopaholics would agree that the high one gets out of the act can never be replicated on an online store. If you are nodding your head in agreement, just walk into our stores for another shot of the shopaholic’s high. Touch and feel Wouldn’t you want to feel the fabric before you buy yourself a nice dress? What if the fabric sticks awkwardly to your skin? Is that something you would want? Or imagine all the bookstores in the world shutting down and you not being able to spend hours
browsing through them. Imagine not being able to breathe in the fragrance of freshly printed books. Doesn’t the thought of it give you the creeps? The touch and feel of a product is something every buyer is fussy about, no matter what the product is and well, Online robs you off that. Stroll into a store You could be complaining that online stores come to you on your computer screen whereas you have to walk into a real one. Well, you are also discounting the fact that the products takes its own sweet time to reach you when you are online shopping. Also the brick and mortar stores do not categorize products as those with shipping costs and those without. Do you still think strolling into a store can be a worrying task?
COVER STORY
Treat for the eyes We bet you have had trouble trying to convince your parent or your spouse about buying something that you have always wanted to own. You may have pointed at the computer screen a thousand times, made a puppy face hundred times and still not have succeeded. How about stepping out of the house and bringing them to one of our stores? We assure you that in no time, the visual impact of it will bowl them over and you shall have your gift. It is a fact that has come out of studies and surveys that humans respond to real stimuli than a virtual one. Okay, that’s a piece of stat that you could always use to your favor.
Fake offers On top of the pro’s list for a brick and mortar store is the fact that we don’t fool you with a “Hog zillion day” where you are lured with virtual offers and have to return with virtually nothing. More often than not, all the expert reviews that you see on shopping websites are paid for and doesn’t speak the truth. It is always better to examine the product first hand and decide for yourself if the offer is worth it or not. Don’t you think so?
“We conducted a survey last year among the customers to take the feedback about their shopping experience. A handsome percentage of the customer population does not like to shop online for products like formals, footwear, etc. The difficulty that most shoppers experience online is regarding the after-sales and service issues.”
Brand loyalty As you browse through the online stores, you may have come across brands that you have never heard of

yet selling at premium prices. The online space is replete with such dubious brands with fancy Italian or French names and many of us have been victims of this lowly trick. A conventional store however sells brands that are either well known or locally produced merchandise and do not confuse customers, conjuring up new brands. Nothing shall replace service Brands like Apple, Whole Foods and Nordstrom have set a high standard of service, training employees on both products and customers. As other brands are trying to emulate them, customer service becomes an integral part of the shopping experience. The fact that online stores take away the customer - salesman interaction that is an integral part of consumerism,
is lamentable. Reading review after review online would never equal having a personal conversation with a store manager who could suggest the perfect product according to your personal requirements. The perfect fit The biggest risk in online purchases is the fit. You order a perfect looking printed tee online only to discover that it is a touch short when it arrives. With a yard-stick that is not uniform, randomly throwing up UK or US standards, you are bound to make mistakes. Spot the flaws Buying an expensive gadget online only to be delivered a malfunctioning or faulty device is an experience that can really crack open your skull. Of all

the disappointments that online stores dish out, this could be the worst. And what’s more, the hassle of getting it replaced would only make you wish that you had walked into one of our trustworthy gadget stores and picked up the product in person. Hidden costs Sometimes you are paying more than just for the product you purchased. Yes, they all say delivery is free. But often they charge you for its shipment etc. Additional service availability A Shopping Guide at a store is a great aid for you to make the right choice. queries that you have regarding the products and so help you make an informed choice. Quality assurance Don’t they say a picture conveys as much as a thousand words? If you thought that was a harmless statement, you were wrong. As you shop online, wonderfully edited pictures easily coax you into falling for a product. There is hardly anything other than these pictures that you can rely on when you make the decision. On the contrary, a conventional store gives you the assurance in person as well as the brand itself. Counterfeits Many E-commerce companies find
“To get a feel of the most happening trends and color palettes of the season, there could be no better way than visiting a truly international brand like Marks & Spencer. And for the right fit, nothing can beat try-outs. So walk in and shop” Aswin Suresh Store Manager, Marks & Spencer

it difficult to keep counterfeits off their inventory even with all their good intentions, owing mainly to the fact that the products are sourced in a segmented way. While at the conventional stores, it could be your manners that stop you from asking too many questions about authenticity, at an online store it is only because there is nobody to answer. Identity theft The internet has become the hideout for all the crooks in the world. No, it is not just a group of greedy pirates any more. There are scores of them, every nationality, every ethnicity, waiting to make a quick kill out of an unsuspecting online shopper. The web has no boundaries. The fact that you
are giving out extremely confidential information online, is another reason for you to be wary of online shopping websites. Exclusivity If you stack online stores alongside the brick and mortar ones, you see two spaces selling a wide range of products. One a burgeoning space, selling products to millions, the other a smaller, more personal space that caters to a few hundreds every day. Which one is likely to value its customers more? Which one do you think would be able to give more exclusivity to its customers? We believe that the answer to this question should govern the choice that you make. And the answer undoubtedly is, conventional stores.

CAKE MIXING How about a delicious cake? The rich aroma of fruits and nutty goodness is guaranteed to have a flood in your mouth. That too, about 30,000 kg of cake haven. Lulu Mall was set to make many varieties of cakes like rich plum, cherry, eggless, sugarfree, Xmas plum cake etc. 6000 kg of ingredients were used including honey, baking soda, cashew nuts, bulk raisins, tutti frutti, candied cherries, lemon peel, orange peel, mixed fruit jam, ginger candy, non-alcoholic red wine, and mixed spices. Visitors, therefore, could be part of yet another exciting event at Lulu Mall and mark the beginning of yet another festival.
PAKIDAKALI The ancient game got a modern touch in Lulu Mall to entertain the young and the old alike. As a part of the Onam celebration at Lulu Mall, a live Pakidakali show was conducted. A twenty-foot kalam was created and the parents along with kids, took part in the game. Since using a dice on a huge platform was not possible, the selection was done by rotating a spin wheel by a parent. THE PERFECT STRIDE
IN YOUR JEANS Be a ‘jean’ious with our style tips
I
t’s all about a cool slide. Its all about a throwback body hugging jean. The road to finding the perfect pair of jeans and choosing from the dizzying array of styles out there right now, in which one will feel good, can be a daunting task. So on your quest for denim this fall, remember what has worked for you in the past, but don’t be afraid to try something different. Die hard skinny jeans devotees should shake things up in their wardrobes (change is good, after all) and try their hands in the season’s chicest flares. Explore and try on as many different fits as you have time for. Often, it’s the fit you think won’t work for you that you end up falling in love with. 36 LH OCTOBER 2015
FASHION LONG AND LEAN- THE CLAUDIA SCHIFFER WAY When you are tall, you can definitely rock lean and long straight legged styles-or go retro and try flared,’70s inspired-denim. Flare jeans, full length skinny jeans and super high rise boot jeans will work well for your body type.
THE HOURGLASS BEYONCE
BLAKE LIVELY’S I’M A MOMMA LOOK Finding just the right pair of jeans can be difficult, even more so in pregnancy. Cigarette maternity jeans, maternity pull on toothpick jeans and maternity flare jeans could be the best options when you are pregnant. Soft, stretchy, jersey front panel that expands with your bump and a supporting band of wide elastic is ideal for pregnancy.
If you have an hourglass shape and concerned about extra weight in the middle, try high waist slim leg jeans, light wash flared jeans, skinny jeans and skinny flare leg pant. And still show off your sexy curves, as higher rise works for a curvier woman.
KIM KARDASHIANISQUE Pear -shaped girls with curvy hips should steer clear of anything super tapered to create an overall balance, which helps your hips look slim and streamlined. Boyfriend denim, regular fit jeans and high waist jeans will flatter your curves. And if you want to hide some of your not-so-favorite curves, try a straight leg which helps to balance out your curves.
PETITE LIKE LADY GAGA If you’re on the petite side, there are many great cropped options out there like boyfriend denim, black skinny high waist jeans and slim jeans. But denim is also easy to alter, so don’t limit yourself because of your height. Try a cute boot-cut or sexy, cropped skinny jeans.

Swiss Watch Boutique Kerala’s biggest array of luxury watches
T
he Swiss Watch Boutique at Lulu Mall, showcases a stunning collection of premium luxury watches which are now highly sought after by movie stars, businessmen, diplomats and other celebrities. The showroom features leading Swiss watch brands like Rolex, Ulysse Nardin, Hublot, Longines, Mont Blanc, Frederique Constant, Oris, Tag Heur, Davidoff, Gucci and more. When arriving at the showroom, a customer can not only take home his long cherished dream watch, but also enjoy a truly world class shopping experience.
Rolex pioneered many milestones in the watch industry like waterproof watches (1926), datejust watches (1945), watches that remain waterproof even at depths of 100m below sea level (1955), watches that display time of different time zones (1954), perpetual datejust watches (1956) and more. Rolex watches have earned worldwide fame with their high quality components which ensure precision and durability. Even though Rolex watches were established in England in 1905, the founders Hans Wildorf and Alfred Davis shifted base to Geneva, Switzerland in 1919.
The showroom is owned by the reputed Swiss Group which has over six decades of expertise in the retailing of premium watches in Kerala. It also has won fame as the first authorized retail outlet of Rolex watches in Kerala. The showroom has a separate enclosure ‘Rolex Corner’ set apart for Rolex watches. The Rolex range of watches starts from a modest Rs. 3.38 lakhs and rises to staggering prices of few crores. All models of Rolex watches available in the international market are showcased here.
Ulysse Nardin, another prominent Swiss brand at the store used to bring out marine watches for fifty navies of different world nations. Now it has most modern watches with high precision materials. Longines, the reputed Swiss watch brand has a range of classy yet sporty models. Frederique Constant, established in 1988 by a Dutch couple, is well know for its high precision Tourbillon watch and the Worldtimer model which indicates the time of 24 cities. Oris, the Swiss luxury watchmaker has won repute for its mechanical watches, eventhough it also has quartz watches. The mechanical watches fall under four divisions – Motor Sport, Aviation, Culture and Diving. Tag Heur’s collection includes Formula One, Aquaracer, Link, Carrera and Grand Carrera.
It was Rolex which raised the identity of watches from mere time instruments to icons of classiness, style and success.
At the Swiss Watch Boutique, a connoisseur of fine luxury can also come across watches, pens and wallets of Mont Blanc and Davidoff. Mont Blanc pens are renowned across the world for their delightful writing experience. Their nibs are made of either 18 carat gold or platinum. Mont Blanc, the German brand was first involved in the manufacturing of pens, but later expanded itself into the making of watches and jewellery. For enabling more people like the salaried classes to acquire premium watches like Rolex, Swiss Watch Boutique has announced customer friendly offer like 0% monthly instalment schemes. At frequent intervals, special offers are given with the purchase of specific brands and models. OCTOBER 2015 LH 43

TRAVEL
MUST VISIT DESTINATIONS IN KERALA BEFORE YOU DIE
We say that the world is a small place, but when wanderlust strikes you choose roads that are less travelled and you have a world of obscurity waiting to be discovered; from our list we pick a few destinations that are less explored.
NELLIYAMPATHY This picturesque tourist spot is located 52 km away from Palakkad. Nelliyampathy is blessed with ever green forests and a number of wild animals like elephants, hill squirrels and bisons. The sprawling tea gardens, coffee, cardamom and orange plantations add beauty to this wonderful summer destination. Nelliyampathy consists of mountain ranges providing immense opportunities for trekkers and adventure buffs. It is also a great place for handgliding. Nelliyampathy is connected by road to Palakkad and Coimbatore. Due to the hilly terrain, the best option is to hire a jeep for local travel.
GAVI, PATHANAMTHITTA Gavi is an eco-tourist spot in Kerala which has widely become popular after ‘Alistair International’ the world acclaimed tourism major, listed it among the leading eco-tourism centres and one of the must-see places in India. It’s a beautiful hill station that is part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. One can see wildlife in their natural habitat during forest safaris. Leisure options like trekking and boating are also available.

TRAVEL
VAZHACHAL WATERFALLS This waterfall is very near to Athirappily Waterfalls, one of the most popular waterfalls in Kerala. Vazhachal is just a 5 km drive from the latter. Both these waterfalls are on the Chalakkudy River. The picturesque Vazhachal waterfall is close to dense green forests and is a part of the Chalakudy River. Vazhachal is quite popular among tourists for its exotic flora and herbal plantations. Swimming is strictly prohibited in the area.
THOMMANKUTHU WATERFALL Located 17 km from Thodupuzha in Idukki, Thommankuthu Waterfall is famous for its seven-step waterfall. The water falls down from a height of 1500 meters with a pool beneath each step of the falls. Thommankuthu is an ideal place for the adventurer. Adventure tourism, pedal boating, forest trekking, night camping, bathing in the waterfall etc. are some of the activities possible here. The wild beauty of the jungle and the small streams coming from the nearby hills allow visitors to have a memorable experience.
THENMALA Thenmala is the first planned eco-tourism destination in India. It is located about 72kms from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. It is near Punalur town, Kollam district. Thenmala is a small village at the foothills of the Western Ghats and predominantly a forest area. The famous Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary is the most important tourism resource of Thenmala Ecotourism.
THATTEKKAD BIRD SANCTUARY Thattekkad is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. Described by the famous ornithologist Salim Ali as “the richest bird habitat on peninsular India, this bird sanctuary is part of a dense tropical evergreen forest. It is located at about 58 km from Kochi city. This region is extremely rich in bird diversity as more than 300 species of birds have been identified here. The wildlife here is also noteworthy. MID WEEK CRISIS
MONDAY BLUES
Start your Monday right with a fresh cuppa and enjoy the sunrise. Shut out all those dreary thoughts in your head with some happy music and give yourself a good start to the day. Make a list of things that you are looking forward to doing this week along with your regular task list. Take an effort to dress up and hit the road on a positive note and get to work with a smile on your face. Anytime you feel the blues creeping in, take a gulp of fresh air and plug in those earphones. • Beautiful Day – U2 • I’m Walking on Sunshine – Katrina and the Waves • New Shoes – Paolo Nutini • Good Day – Nappy Roots • Hey Ya – Outkast • 500 Miles – The Pretenders • I’m Feeling Good – Nina Simone • Me Gustas Tu – Manu Chao

It is definitely time for some good music and good feelings. Take a walk around office and have a short chat with your colleagues. Ask people what they are listening to and share music. Plan your after work time, may it be shopping, TV, a good book or dinner out. Try not to do too many things and savour the smaller moments. Have you made plans or are you going with the flow? It doesn’t matter as long as you have music to keep up the beat. • Lazy Song – Bruno Mars • Banana Pancakes –Jack Johnson • Happy – C2C feat D martin • Happy – Pharell Williams • Sunday Morning – Maroon 5 • Come to Me – The Goo Goo Dolls • Could it be Another Change – The Samples • Young Folks – Peter, Bjorn and John
