his was one of the best shoots till date. It was more like I had caught up with with my bunch of girlies and had a blast. There was no semblance of work as we started that Sunday with a lovely breakfast buffet at Burgundy’s. I have to thank Vipin Sachdev, CEO of Burgundy’s for the lovely spread and the non-invasive hospitality. I was prepared to meet a bunch of girls drunk on their success, but to my pleasant surprise they turned out to be real sweethearts with no airs of being the country’s squash superstars. Truly makes you realize that true achievers are the most genuine and down to earth people. Post breakfast we all settled in to do the make up for our stellar guests. Ananka and Aparajitha looked gorgeous and were chitchatting effortlessly in the room. The doorbell rings and the next thing I heard was a shrill energetic sound that greeted Arti (the stylist). Joshana and Arti were classmates and no wonder there was no hi or hello, but more of a what the f*** are you doing here man. I knew at that moment that this was going to be the most engaging and fun shoot we have had till date. Joshana ran in so excited to check out the makeup and clothes of her friends. She grinned and mischievously remarked that her make up should be better than theirs. Joshana turned out to be quite the prankster during the shoot and adopted me as her mother for adhering to strict time frames. Aparjitha and Anaka gave me a ‘we are so used to this’ look in sync. The shoot was filled with laughter, teasing and every other element that makes a great girls day out. The three stars lit up the place with their young vibrant energies and good vibes without which it might have turned out be just another work day shoot. We winded up the exact way we started, with great food and company. There was a scruffle to take selfies with an ensuing discussion on which pictures all of looked our best and endless uploading. I really felt like I had known them for ages. I took this as a sign that this summer was going to be fantastic in Chennai. There are a lot of great events in the city you should not miss out on, movies that will definitely have you queueing up for tickets and a whole lot of new ventures that truly show that Chennai is the place to be. So there is no time for Summertime Sadness Lana, this is the time for Summertime Madness. Enjoy!

A Fin-tastiC Experience

An exceptional dining experience from Manhattan in Chennai. Sarah George

A

brand new creative space called the Manhattan Fish Market opened up to connoisseurs in Chennai recently. A casual dining restaurant that specializes in American style seafood, it embodies the colorful and dynamic spirit of Manhattan’s iconic fish market, channeling their energy towards providing an exceptional dining experience. We stepped into the charming restaurant and was pleasantly greeted by its decor evoking a deeply rooted sense of the historical market with a modern touch. We started off with Chipotle Fish Skewers which was juicy and succulent and went on to the Garlic Herbed Mussels ,which I would like to call the signature dish, because not only was it light and fragrant but also a perfect treat for all my senses. The Gummy Bear turned out to be the perfect summer drink, refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness. They have an exceptionally interesting array of homemade sauces which complimented the seafood fiesta. The Tilapia crispy fish was as crispy and tasty as it sounded, and the thick, creamy Mud pie sealed

the deal. The Manhattan Fish Market has further differentiated itself by introducing 5 different ways of cooking: grilled, fried, baked, poached and flamed which will definitely sweep guests off their feet. Though we initially thought that the lack of crabmeat dishes, a must have for seafood lovers, on the menu was a little discouraging, the rest of the delicacies made up for that. Get a taste of experimental dining, with on-the-spot flaming of Manhattan Flaming Prawns. Diners can enjoy a gastronomical feast here, delighting in a wide array of specialties. Jumbo Seafoods Pvt Ltd, the company which owns the franchise rights for The Manhattan Fish Market brand in India, is confident of the brand’s success and already has a second restaurant slated to open within the year.

They have won medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games and occupy enviable positions in the International ranking as well. The Indian Squash Academy has played a key role in developing these youngsters

who picked up the sport when they were very young. Their parent nurtured them, and they repaid this faith by winning in the global arena. Sports is their passion and they grew up with focus and discipline. Today they are poised for greater glory, waiting in anticipation to take on competition and prove their mettle once again.

parents support, my own determination and my sponsors help. The State government of Tamil Nadu has been more supportive than the central government. But I have always been driven by my parents, well wishers and sponsors. After the success at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, there has been more attention and awareness for Squash.

What is your take on training in India and abroad? The Indian Squash Academy in Chennai has great infrastructure and great coaches, but the knowledge and the level of training are at a higher level abroad. I love training in Orlando, USA with the best players in the world while in Chennai, I play with the guys.

She is synonymous with Squash in India. This tall sportswoman has collected most of the laurels that are available across squash courts and is one of the reigning national champions with a world ranking of 25. She started when she was 9, and now she is pushing her 17th year in the sport. Joshana’s demeanor on the court and off it exudes confidence and self-awareness. She speaks to our team with the assurance of varied experiences and the expertise of a professional. How did you start playing squash? My dad was a squash player and he used to take me to the courts. It was only natural that I would run every time the courts were free and whack the ball around. When I was ten, I chose squash as the game that I wanted to play and pursue as a career. My dream was to play for India. I played first for India when I was 12 for the women’s team and won the National Women’s Championship when I was 14. How was it to play at the highest levels of the game at the young age like you did? It was extremely tough as most of the time that I had to do all the travelling alone. The game itself was a challenge and there were many constraints. I was also offered a great education in the US, but I was focused on playing for the country. I chose to be a professional Squash player, and I wanted to keep training to be fitter and stronger and get better at the game. It was difficult to play international tournaments till I was 19 when I got a good sponsor who helped in a big way. What are your plans for the game as a player and in the future? I want to be playing the game for the next six years and am looking forward to playing in the next Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Afterwards, I want to get into coaching and help kids train and become champions. I want to share the knowledge of the years on the court and the experiences playing across the world with the best of players. How has the government recognised an exemplary sportswoman of your stature? While the government of India has recognised me with the Arjuna award, I am a product of my

aparajitha

balamurukan She is vibrant and quite focussed for her age. She is also one stars of the Indian Squash team and is currently ranked No:4 in the country. She started playing squash when was 8 and started playing competitively at 10. Having won Silver in the Asian games, she is poised for greater glory in the World Squash Circuit. How did you start playing squash? I was always into sport from my early days - roller skating to swimming to horse riding and one of my Dad’s friend recommended that I try Squash. I just fell in love with the sport and on seeing the courts I knew I just wanted to play. The weekend coaching days were something that I looked forward to. One day, I was sick and I could not go; I broke into tears and my parents had never seen me so passionate about anything like that before. From that day onwards, they have always been on my side and helped me climb the ladder in the Squash Circuit. Early milestones... I think the first big achievement was when I played for the country when I was 13 for Asian Junior Championships. I was also playing international tournaments like the Malaysian Open and the British Open. My Mom used to take me to play and was there for me while I was fighting through the national ranking. What are your near term goals? I am currently focussing on my studies and the in terms of Squash, I am looking forward to Asian games and Commonwealth games. Who do you look up to as role models? In India, I see Joshana putting in her heart and soul into the game. She is extremely focused. In the World scene, I admire Nicole David And Ramy Ashord. What are your future plans? I am looking to play squash competitively for a few more years and after which I would be taking over the family business. I have missed out a lot while touring for the game and would want to be part of the family more after a few years. I would want to be part of the game in some capacity, coaching or mentoring. How do you think Squash is received in India? I feel that in India, sports other than cricket require a bit more recognition and support. I have been fortunate to be able to travel to play international tournaments. But it is difficult to keep on investing when there is little support. Your message for youngsters taking up sports? I feel that people have to enjoy sport. It builds health and character. It makes you competitive and resilient. What do you do during your free time? I love watching movies. Tamil ones especially starring our “Thala”, Ajith. I love eating..I love chilling out with friends and family.

ANAKA ALANKAMONY This lady first walked on to the squash court when she was nine at the Madras Cricket Club. She found the sport new and different. A month later, she was winning third place at the State Championships. Today she is ranked 3rd nationally and is an Arjuna award winner with a drive to make it to the top 10 in the world. She has made the country proud by winning bronze at the Asian games in 2010 and upping the ante with a silver medal in the 2014 Games. She also set the record for being the youngest person to enter at WISPA (Women’s International Squash Players’ Association ) at the age of 15. Your earliest memories of playing squash... I started playing tennis when I was just six. Being in Chennai, the weather was not really conducive for outdoor sport and my parents wanted me to look for another game. I was introduced to squash and soon found myself training at the Indian Squash Academy. It was more like a hobby and an exercise to be physically fit. I just wanted to enjoy the game and never imagined it would get me here. What changed your approach to the game? A month after training, I was came third in the State Championship and second in a national tournament. My Dad wanted to see how far I could go with the sport. There was no pressure but he wanted me to enjoy myself. I was soon participating in international tournaments and doing well. I was guided by my Dad and my Mom gave me unconditional support. What inspires you and keeps your motivated? Winning keeps me going, but I don’t feel pressured to win. Whatever the outcome is, I am happy as long I give it my best. My parents always advised me not to worry about outcomes but to just enjoy and give it my best. What is the message for youngsters who are taking up the sport? The results may not matter when you start off but learn to enjoy the game. Learn the sport and learn the technique. Once you are 15, you need to start focusing and get down to hard training. What are your goals with the sport? I want to complete my under graduation in the University of Pennsylvania and start playing in the professional circuit. I aim to break into the world top 10. In the long term, I want to give back to the sport in a non profit manner because it has given me so much. I feel that squash as a sport is picking up and requires a lot of more facilities. There are enough squash coaches but nationally, the infrastructure is limited. Playing in the US helps me with my game as it is more liberal. I also feel that competition is much higher there and it helps me push my game to the next level. What do you like to do outside of playing? I don’t get much time and when I do get it, I love watching TV and going out once in a while.

nimey Ippadithan released to an expectant crowd this month. The Tamil romantic comedy featuring Santhanam, Ashna Zaveri and Akhila Kishore has been received with a lot of appreciation. Directed by Muruganand to the music of Santhosh Kumar and Dhayanidhi, the movie plays to its strengths; a movie to be enjoyed for its cliches and familiarity. Santhanam, who is noted for his comic talent plays Seenu, a man who is caught between love, marriage and family. This is his second venture in the lead role after Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham, which released last year. So lets see if Santhanam will get more hero centric roles ‘Inimey Ippadithan’.

A diseased mouth paves the way to a number of health conditions such as heart diseases, respiratory diseases and diabetes. Plaque is the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease. What is Plaque? Plaque is a thin sticky film of bacteria that forms on the surface of teeth constantly. Plaque and gum disease If plaque isn’t cleaned thoroughly by brushing, it hardens to form “tartar” which in turn weakens gums and pulls it away from teeth, creating gaps. When these gaps get infected and are not treated promptly, it weakens the supporting bone, making teeth fall out. It is important to remove plaque and bits of food from around your teeth as this will stop your gums from becoming inflamed, swollen, and infected. Plaque and tooth decay When you eat food containing sugars and starches, the bacteria in plaque produce acids, that attack tooth enamel. The stickiness of the

plaque keeps these acids in contact with your teeth. After a constant acid attack, the tooth enamel breaks down forming a hole or cavity. Although most people brush regularly, many don’t clean between their teeth and some people don’t have regular dental check-ups. A few small changes in your daily routine can make a big difference in the long term. Halitosis is a major concern among people. Below are few causes of halitosis: Gum diseases Yeast infections of the mouth and Dental caries Dry mouth Liver or kidney disorders Chronic acid reflux Respiratory infections (pneumonia or bronchitis) Smoking & Alcohol Certain foods (onions, garlic, diet rich in meat, dairy products) Did You Know? Brushing your teeth right after eating or drinking acidic foods could hurt them?? If you brush before saliva could remineralize the teeth, you are brushing already weakened enamel. Make sure to wait an hour to brush

Here are few tips to help you have a smile that will last for the rest of your life: Use a good toothbrush Brush at least twice a day- but don’t scrub them Floss daily Stick to your healthy eating plan Keep blood sugar levels in control Avoid aerated drinks Go for a dental check-up once every six months

after your meals. The practice of putting a cap on toothbrush harbours bacterial growth due to the moisture entrapped in the cap. Fluoridated toothpaste when ingested habitually by kids, leads to fluoride toxicity. People who drink 3 or more glasses of aerated drinks daily have 62% more teeth decay and tooth loss than others. Tobacco is the most global cause of cancer. One person dies every 6 seconds from a tobaccorelated disease. Say NO to tobacco It’s time for you to look into the mirror and feel confident about your smile. Love it; flaunt it, because life is short, so smile while u still have teeth, healthy teeth.
