This is a rough glimpse into the world of Hip Hop. Music has the incredible power to move anything beyond its physical limits. Perhaps this is why it is regarded as one of the most powerful mediums of reaching upto someone. The formula of remixing an original single with an added rap verse on it sells undoubtedly. Hip-Hop is not only a genre of music, but for many it is a way of life. A culture that has woven itself into every aspect of young people’s routine. Hip Hop and flamboyance go hand in hand, be it flashy cars, glamorous women, expensive sneakers and all that bling. Today it represents a multi-billion dollar industry that influences everything. Indian Hip Hop icons Yo Yo Honey Singh’s raw and Anirudh’s sensational music has become anthems for the youth, be it in clubs or cars.

In this issue, meet ‘Indias No: 1 Hip Hop DJ’ - Kave , a self made, self taught and a very talented turntablist. A degree in audio engineering plus his profuse love and dedication for the art has fetched him the much deserved recognitionand accolades on a magnanimous level in the past few years. From representing India on an international forum to having worked with the biggest names in the music scenario and touring the world, bagging awards and titles and running Indias most successful DJ Academy, Kave is undoubtedly living his dream.

hennai based DJ Kave has spun his way into the glory books after being voted as the Best Hip Hop DJ of 2014-15 at the Myfav DJ awards . Myfav awards is the first of its kind in India where winners are chosen by the people. Having started DJ-ing almost 15 years ago in the middle east in Qatar, DJ Kave’s journey has taken him from genres like hip-hop to twerk to EDM and RnB. His first big step was to represent India at the World DMC DJ championship in 2007 and 2008. DMC is by far the world’s largest DJ competition held in London every year, with only the best DJs from across the globe being chosen to represent their respective countries. Kave has also been featured in popular television channels such as MTV for shows such as Rock On, Channel UFX, Sony TV and many more.

Over the years DJ Kave has collaborated with some of the greatest legends in the Indian and international music scene. In 2007 he started to perform with Rapper Blaaze at shows and found a mentor in Blaaze. It was Blaaze who introduced him to the legendary A.R Rahman, which translated into him bagging the official DJ title for the music maestro during the ‘Jai ho’ tour in 2009.

He is also one of the most popular names in social media and one of the most searched names in the industry.

DJ Kave has toured and performed across the globe with renowned international artists at music festivals like KLIMF (Malaysia), Sandance

(Dubai), Beats on the Beach (Abudhabi) which featured artists such as Jason Derulo, Rita Ora, Armin Van Buuren and other artists to name a few. Kave currently tours with Hard Kaur extensively with an average of atleast one inter-

national show a month. DJ Kave’s title of the country’s best turntablist and subsequent win of the Myfav DJ awards confirms his popularity and is fitting recognition of his talent and passion in the art of turntablism and DJing.

Whats the best thing about being a DJ and the worst?

The best thing has to be the state of mind when one is DJing, the joy you feel while performing.

Awards are like a compliment, and honestly I feel there is more to art and culture than just awards.

I have always done what I love, whether it meant getting awards or not.

Tell us something about your childhood.

Well, I was born and raised in a south Indian Tamil household in Qatar. But most of my friends were a mix of Arabs, British and Americans since I went to an American school in Doha. This is where I had my early influence in Hip Hop music and exposure to DJ-ing. I came to India to pursue

my further studies in recording arts and sound engineering. My first actual show/gig was at a school party where I DJ-ed. I became popular overnight and the rest is history.

Well what is the most important thing about the work you do, and why did you want to become a DJ in the first place?

I am a Dj and my job is to make people dance to my music. I love the feeling I get when people start moving to the music and are lost in the moment. The feeling makes me complete and one with the universe, my purpose in life, my bliss.

What do you do when you are not performing?

The track “Glory”, from the movie SELMA. That’s in my head right now. I cant wait to take it down, scratch it and mix it onto a bass driven track!

What would surpirse us about you?

I am not much of a partying person, I am in the clubs mostly only during my performances.

this business they would like to label you into a HipHop DJ or a House DJ or a Bollywood DJ. I feel one should be able to experiment and perform anything that one wishes. What is the point otherwise? Who made the rules anyway?

As a DJ how hard is it to introduce new tracks to the dance floor since people usually prefer to groove to familiar numbers?

The real skill of the Dj is to introduce the audience to new music which could be the latest tracks and different genres. His responsibility is to blend new music with the more popular ones which will allow the audience to experience new kinds of music while still being able to relate with the one that they are familiar with. This kind of mix enables the growth of dance music in comparison to playing the same old tracks over and over again. It is much easier now than when I started, as the audience is more aware of EDM and Hip Hop. What is IN now?

The IN thing today that is happening globally, happens to be Trap and Twerk. While Electro house is making waves across dance floors around the world, people in Chennai seems to have moved towards techno music in the past few years. It’s great to see that film music has adopted the trends in dance music into their creative space. I have seen music directors sampling Trap and Twerk in the movies.

Shibani’s expertise and international exposure has equipped her with the global perspective which reflects in her philosophy and approach towards the spa industry. Shibani has presented over 400 episodes of beauty presentations on television, written extensively on the topic and consulted for international hotel chains and cosmetic companies. She has also been the President of the All India Beauty Association and has been actively involved in the field of education and upgradation of skills in the beauty industry. Shibani has also been the Style Consultant for Chennai International Fashion Week (CIFW) and has worked with over 80 Top Designers in India and done over 150 shows. Apart from these, Shibani has been the Director Planning for The Indian Princess Beauty Pageant and other beauty pageants in India.

jai Umesh was fascinated as a child with beautiful pictures. After finishing education in computer graphics back in 1998, he did a small vocational photography course. And the rest as they say is history. Constantly experimenting and learning, Ajai’s break came when a shoot for a designer was published. He moved to Mumbai and shot for brands like Shopper’s Stop, Pizza Hut, Henko, Clinic Plus etc. He has shot over 2000 portfolios over the past 15 years and has been featured in print and video. He believes that “your work should speak about you and my work speaks above all.My goal has been to provide world class quality and be one of the best in the world.”

Having shot various film celebrities like Trisha, Riya sen, John Abraham, Sonal Chauhan, Priyamani and many more, Ajai’s interests range from fashion and advertising photography to landscapes and nature. At the moment he is working on showcasing our beautiful country as an exhibition in various cities around the world.

“Photography is a fine mix of a story of the person behind the camera and the object in front of the camera.” Ajai’s inspiration comes from nature and renaissance paintings of 15th and 16th century and some classic photographers like Mario Testino, Patrick Demarchelier, Annie Leibovitz and Richard Avedon. He reflects that “photography is an art. The only difference between traditional art and photography is that the camera is the paintbrush.”
