Nothing was out of element when we were exploring the classic Italian and modern Indian cuisine at Elements, Kacheripady.

I

n Harry Potter, the newspapers are animated, while in Elements the menu is bespoke. The restaurant takes you into a miniature wonder world - inspired by the elements of water, wood, metal, fire and earth. From the lush gardens, the peeping tortoise, eclectic art, the huge porthole like windows, and Moroccan mosaic, the ambience instigates a surprise; what’s cooking? But there’s no quizzical maze, head yourself to the kitchen and find out. Never be surprised, the kitchen is always open to guests. Santosh Mullapalli - the CEO of Elements- mentioned that children loved to see how pizzas were prepared and they always joined in. As the not -so- forbidden doors were opened, I was welcomed with warm smiles. Chef Mallikarjun was making a final touch to the

chicken saltimbocca. Santosh joked, “You won’t chicken out!” , especially when saltimbocca is loosely transliterated as ‘ jump into the mouth.’ If the Italian cuisine takes you faraway, the Indian makes you feel right at home. It didn’t take a long time to discover that Element’s secret ingredient was not a pinch of Vatican poke salt or even some Monin syrup, but a dollop of puns and sautéed humour. Dining at Elements evokes many moods. As the sun slowly bowed down, the light from the circular windows kept changing. The cherry on top was when Santosh said, “ People not only come here to solve their hunger crimes, but satisfy their soul.” Well wouldn’t we be arrested for our all hunger crimes especially when there’s Elements to bail us out !

Sardar, Postcards and a Backward March Channeling Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at JTPAC

N

eo-liberalisation, in the view of many, was a self-centered policy. Not giving a hoot about the public and most of all the people who in actuality, feed us. Amol Parashar and Jaimini Pathak presented those thoughts on stage with their play Postcards from Bardoli at JTPAC. They say the new administration has been giving us a great year. Though backed up by cynical pessimism, scores of people are optimistic that India will grow into a super power. So much so that the national budget session which actually is hyperbolic, looks like a profit graph. Two young men come on to the stage and break that delusion. With minimal settings on stage for the play (a table, chair, and few mats), these young men present a grave issue that India needs to address: the peasant crisis. The Story Mihir (Amol Parashar) is born during the cusp of economic and social transition in India. An India full of promises. We follow his story in the current post-liberalization India. He has seen the economic changes in which the agrarian crisis becomes the cynosure. With the worst-ever recorded wave of about 296,438

08

Aabha Muralidharan

farmer suicides since 1995 (official records) in the history of India catching Mihir’s attention, he takes cues from the historical Bardoli Satyagraha and draws inspiration from its hero, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Mihir embarks on a perilous backward journey. On Stage The play has a simple, minimal design. The props are just not functional but have a meaning in their presence and usage. The rolling of the mats to denote the completion of one phase in life is remarkable. The rolled mats as they stand together in rows make them silent witnesses

to the development of the story. When asked about the minimal stage settings, Jaimini Pathak, the director and actor said, “I wanted to keep the stage simple. There was less scope for making itinto a multi-media projection, bringing in Sardar Vallabhai Patel footage and pictures of drought. The play moves back and forth in time. Therefore we couldn’t get into realism. One table and chair is a suggestion of where I am sitting and recounting the story. The table at the back is where all the arguments happen and the little study room is a suggestion of Mihir’s room. You make each zone as a power zone. The center stage is rarely used but when it is used, it is as a meeting point. The human drama, the interaction between the father and son, how the story is being told through their lives is gripping and emotional. I did not want to divert from that. Once I decided what I did not want to do as a director, I focused on rehearsing and bringing in the emotional tone.” Recollection The play reveals each of those spine chilling facts related to farmer suicide sand the agrarian crisis. There are parts where Mihir, in a farce manner, talks of minimum wages which is enacted with solemnity and placed in a satirical perspective. In the final sequence the playwright juxtaposes the Bardoli Satyagraha with present day farmer suicides staged against the backdrop of the water scams that rocked Maharashtra. It calls for confrontation and catalysis instead of catharsis. “We had shows where we have audience whom we knew. Our friends come to watch in Bombay. There have been times when my friends disappeared after the show! We are glad that after the play, people are taking back home something.” remarks Amol Parashar. We as a nation at the end of a tragedy want some kind of summation but Postcards from Bardoli does not give you that. This dark play only gives despair that leaves you to ponder and reflect.

keep cool Tips to bear the sun and keep going.

Dr. Cuckoo Mathai

Use sunscreen before you step out Try to buy a medicated sunscreen instead of the cosmetic one. For acne prone and oily skin, use a gel-based sunscreen. For our climate, it is optimum to use a sunscreen with minimum SPF 30. Cover yourself A broad-brimmed hat comes recommended. An umbrella is a good option as well, as it keeps your hands out of the sun. Sunglasses will help but make sure you invest in a good pair. Dress Smart Wear loose, cotton clothes which will help skin to breathe. Avoid synthetic materials as they increase the chance of fungal infections due to excessive sweating.

Before a swim Use waterproof sunscreen with SPF 50. Remember that it takes half an hour to take effect, so make sure you apply sunscreen in advance. Sunscreen has four hours of action only and so repeat the application if you are staying in the water longer. Chlorine can dry out your skin, so after stepping out of the pool, have a shower and moisturize.

Food we should consume and avoid Avoid oily, heavy and non-vegetarian dishes. Have a lot of fruits, salads and juices. We lose a lot of salt through sweating, so it is recommended to add salt to what you consume. For example, add a bit of salt to your fruit juices, along with the sugar. Fruits with great antioxidants and water content are pomegranates, melons and papaya. Drink plenty of water.

Prajwal On The Go The young actor and dancer on Mammootty, Mohanlal and growing up

W

e are laughing. Apparently it tends to happen a lot when you hang around Prajwal Prasad. The young actor and dancer has done what many would give anything to do; act with the legendary big Ms of Mollywood. Prajwal is learning the walk of fame, as he gets recognized invariably as the differently abled Sunny from Spirit and the young Anand in Varsham. But he takes it all in stride. This lad has come a long way and has still more to go. The shoot was immense fun as Prajwal’s parents made us feel at home and plundered us with hot pizzas. The Chelsea fan was expressive with his answers, sometimes answering just like a high

school kid and sometimes with a wisdom that blew you away. If in one moment he talks about being pragmatic, the next he is explaining how he got his hair cut just like Dulquer Salman in 100 Days of Love. You have starred in three big dance reality shows. What is your first memory of dancing? I remember dancing with my sister around the house. My mother says I have been dancing since I was three years old. Then there were a lot of dance classes and I absolutely loved it. I enrolled in the Gulf chapter of Boogie Woogie and there was no looking back. My family moved to Kochi when i was 10 and I appeared in Super Dancer, D4 Dance and India’s Got

Talent. I had so much fun. We cannot believe you made Dharmendra cry! I Know! It was a great moment for me, that my dance could move him so much. I performed a song from Mera Nam Joker for India’s Got Talent. Sonali Bendre was so encouraging and I got a rose from Kirron Kher. It was unbelievable. So how did you start acting? The dancing led to a lot offers. My first movie, contrary to popular belief, was ‘Myavoo Karimpoocha’ in 3D which did not get released. But my first breakthrough movie happened by chance. I was part of a performance in school. I was not able to make it for all the rehearsals due to my schedule and I was upset about that.

wtzup.in/COVER

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I still made it on stage. Some people have godfathers, I have a god mother. Narayani aunty, director Ranjith’s sister, saw me and recommended me for the role in Spirit. I was sent to St.Clare’s to learn sign language (which he remembers) and had a tutor. It came naturally to me as it was very similar to mudras in dancing. How was it acting with Mohanlal? When I was told that the role was with Lal uncle, I thought it was going to be Siddique Lal. It was

my mother who broke the news to me. Lal uncle is such a great person. He immediately made me comfortable. I learnt so much from him. What about Mamootty? Mammotty uncle is very focussed. He would always give me tips and run lines with me before the shoot. He taught me a lot about dialogue delivery. I know you might not believe me if I tell you that he is a lot of fun. Him and Asha aunty were really like my parents. I even called her Amma, which confused my own mother a lot. She was scared I would go off with her (laughs). The character of Anand (Varsham) came easily to me as he was very much like me. Do you believe in fate? I believe that everything happens for the best. If you have two things in your hands, God will take away one, so he can replace it with a better one. You can’t have more when your hands are full. My parents have been extremely supportive. My mother is my PR agent (his mother smiles as she fusses over us and makes us feel at home). Directors Ranjith and Ranjith Shankar have really moulded me. They have different working styles and it is amazing to watch them at work. To have such great directors at the beginning of my career makes me feel truly blessed. What would you do if you had all the money in the world? I want to buy a big mansion for my family. I promised my mother that I will buy her a Hummer when I make it. I love cars and would splurge on a Lamborghini Murcielago and an old Benz.

Your idea of a perfect summer vacation We travel as a family. So a lot of travelling and a lot of football. This is the first time I am spending so much time in the city. I hang out with my friends. I go to Lulu a lot with my mother. Kochi actually has a lot to offer, it is just that people are not aware of it. Birthday May 12 First thing when you turn 18 Get my driving license and Tomorrowland! So dancing or acting? I want to act but one should never forget their roots. First song you danced to Aashiq Banaya Dream Role Joker (The Dark Knight) You would like to act with Deepika Padukone Favorite Dancer Hrithik Roshan You would like to try Skydiving You aspire to be Like Dhirubhai Ambani, a great businessman.

W

e love bowling. There is something about knocking down those pins that gets us excited. Well, history traces bowling upto 5000 years ago, so there is no competition to its popularity. Even if its for sport or for fun, bowling has a lot of takers. No Mall of this era, is complete without its bowling alley. There are two types of bowling, pin bowling and target bowling. The one that you enjoy at the Mall is pin bowling with its many variations. Target bowling is mainly played outdoors. The good news is that bowling is considered to be good exercise. According to Wikipedia “Bowling helps in burning calories and works muscle groups not usually exercised. The flexing and stretching in bowling works tendons, joints, ligaments, and muscles in the arms. While most sports are not suitable for elderly people, it is possible to practice bowling very well at advanced ages.” And if that wasnt enough excuse to head to the gleaming alleys to make

new friends and strengthen old ones. The bowling alley at Sparky’s in Lulu Mall is the largest in Kerala with 12 lanes. They are open from 10 am to 11pm so that you can make the most of your summer vacation. The alley is usually found buzzing with thumping music and energetic players. They have provided a cafe
