WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAU
R
egular workouts and healthy eating are the keys to weight loss. However, when it comes to a plateau, it becomes difficult to stick to the same regimen. But wait, usually weight loss plateaus are for a temporary period only and you resume again. Just continue with your efforts, don’t get discouraged - let’s see what it is and how to deal with it... What is a Weight Loss Plateau? In simpler words, when you are exercising regularly and following a proper diet but you neither lose kgs nor inches at a particular state, is Weight Loss Plateau. In this state, your nervous system gets adapted to the same routine and it stops sending signals to the brain to show further results! How does one reach a Weight Loss Plateau? Decreased Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) or Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) is the common reason for reaching a plateau. When you consume fewer calories, your BMR decreases, thus your body’s
6

need for energy too, decreases. Factors that decrease metabolism include muscle loss, inactivity, unhealthy eating habits and decreased body weight. Losing body weight results in lowered metabolism. This creates a balance between calories consumed and calories burned. When this balance occurs, your weight remains maintained, causing a plateau! Another theory is the ‘set point theory’ where the brain set up controls and tries to maintain body weight and body fat levels as per one’s genetic structure. With dieting, body fat levels begin to decrease. The brain responds to this fat loss by increasing the appetite to prevent further losses in fat and weight. Weight plateaus are the result of an attempt to defend preset levels when challenged. How can you overcome it to achieve your weight loss goal? When you reach a plateau, don’t panic. You can get back on track after following the below
techniques. Revise your exercise chart - try something new, indulge yourself in different forms of exercises like: Weight or Resistance Training: use different amounts of weights/dumbbells during weight training Functional training: use your own body weight instead of using external weights in functional training Cardio Exercise: try aerobic exercises, step exercises, climb stairs, skipping, zumba, etc. Give a variety in your exercise chart: Increase the number of repetitions Change the amount of resting time between two sets Change the time of your workout Add an additional incline to the treadmill Combination workouts like cardio with weights/ resistance training or cardio with functional training would be beneficial as they involve different areas of the body and work together to break the plateau.
wtzup.in/HEALTH
Check your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) & Muscle mass Break the plateau by increasing metabolism and muscle mass. Exercise will aid in increasing activity levels and muscle mass. These are two major factors in raising metabolism. Exercising also activates enzymes in muscles, which are more effective in burning fat. Losing body fat is more important than losing weight. Just because the scale isn’t moving, it doesn’t mean you aren’t getting leaner, more toned and healthier. Always remember to look for improved body composition than just going down on the scale! Change your diet pattern For a short duration try different food items which you have not tried before - which will change your body’s response to the food and will help you to get through plateaus. Expose yourself to detox diets, low carb-high protein diets, but while doing it maintain the basic caloric intake (1200-1500 kcal/day). Just change your nutritional composition -increase an intake of high fiber foods like raw vegetables in the form of salads, soups, whole fruits (preferably with skin); add protein rich foods like pulses, sprouts, beans, low fat milk and milk products, white meats like chicken, fish, egg whites and trim off simple carbs and fats. Do not forget to have plenty of water to flush out toxins from your body. Also change your eating schedule. Start with small-frequent meals keeping a gap of two-three hours between two meals. Introduce mid meals between two main meals like green tea, lemon water, coconut water, fruits, etc. which will not only keep you full for the day but also help give a boost to your metabolism, leading to a faster fat loss.

HAIR AND MAKEUP
THIS MONSOON
M
onsoon is a tricky season for all you fashionistas. You enjoy the rain but the water and humidity can wreak havoc on your style. So here are some tricks and tips to still be the diva that you are and keep it fresh this season. Make up do’s Wash and cleanse your face before applying make-up. Flaunt your skin with light make-up. Use face powder to remove the grease on your nose and face. Apply water resistant mascara. Go for bright lips. Use long lasting colors of lipstick that are not creamy and glossy. Powder matte tones and crème matte tints are in vogue. Light blush can be applied to highlight your cheeks.
Make up don’ts Avoid foundation. Go light on the eye makeup, especially the kajal. Yes for the tresses Dry up your hair as soon as it gets wet. Hot oil massage and dry massage on scalp using fingers will maintain blood circulation and help in hair growth. Use a wide toothed comb Long hair can be tied up to top knot. Short hair can be neatly styled by tapering. Messy hairdo goes well with casuals. Carry a towel or travel hairdryer at all times Eat healthy and drink lots of water Be fair to your hair Never use hairsprays and hair gel. Limit oiling your hair. Oily hair results in stinking. ARE ONE NIGHT STANDS
REALLY WORTH IT?
When it comes to one night stand men and women are poles apart; studies say casual sex is more satisfying for men than women as they are way too picky.
S
ome call a one night stand shallow, whereas others may call it spontaneous and exciting. One night stand would often seem appealing to those who seek sex without repercussions, responsibilities, or guilt but does that mean one should ignore the danger lurking during the passionate session. So before you jump on to get that big booty call, know the rules attached. Stay away from Alcohol and drugs: Alcohol and drugs destroy and in no way up your sexual experience. In fact, they can influence your decision-making process and allow you to indulge in risky (and unhealthy!) behaviour. Apart from being poor decision influencers, they are also responsible for many lifestyle diseases. One night stands without condoms are a bad idea: There is some merit to the idea of carrying
a condom with you whether or not you’re accustomed to and expecting a one night stand. Man or woman, carrying condoms is a must if you want to avoid unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases. Depression is linked to one night stands: Other than sexually transmitted diseases, alcoholism and depression is also linked to one night stands. Many studies have time and again proved that the shorter the relationships, the higher are the chances of depression. Also, rampant sex tends to put future relations in jeopardy as trust becomes elusive and cheating becomes common. Sex with stranger: Remember, a one night stand means you are making out with someone you don’t really know (socially and emotionally), so that can be a pro and a con. Addictive: One night stands can be addictive too,

KOCHI HAS MORE THAN YOU THINK
A
mid the hustle bustle in Kochi, lies Mangalavanam bird sanctuary- the age old green lung of Kochi, housing a large variety of birds which makes it worth a visit for all bird lovers and twitchers. If you need a day off from the busy life, this sanctuary is located right in the centre of the city behind the High Court of Kerala. It would satisfy anybody who loves the soft humming of birds. If you are a lot more adventurous and want to
explore the place, with the permission from right authorities you can have access to a larger area where you can photograph a range of birds. The innumerable number of trees provides shelter to the migrating birds and also covers the place like a blanket from the scorching sun. The lake that flows in between the thick mangrove vegetation in Mangalavanam adds to the beauty of the sanctuary and one can capture the perfect view from atop the treehouse.
especially if you are not in a relationship. Habits like these are hard to break, especially if you like the thrill, especially if you love the feeling of sleeping with someone that you don’t really know. Remember, habits like this can be hard to maintain and very difficult to handle. You Might Regret It: A 2008 study from Durham University in the UK found that only about half of the women experienced positive feelings after a one-night stand, compared to 80 percent of men. Hookups are best as a conscious choice, rather than a spontaneous act. Hormones playing bad games: After love-making the oxytocin or the “cuddle hormone” released can trigger thoughts of “It’s love”. This chemical might help create a bond between two people, to cause them to want each other more than anyone else.
