A Diner in Black and White Palace Food Court, a classy option for the weary traveler.

N

estled in an area just across from Kochi’s International Airport, Palace Food Court is a welcome sight for travel-weary eyes. It calls to all kinds of appetites with a restaurant, coffee shop, bakery and a banquet hall. As I stepped into the Palace Food Court, I was instantly struck by the color theme. Everything was in combinations of black and white, from the clean tiles on the floor to the walls, tables, chairs, the ceiling fans, light fixtures and even the window blinds. The glass facade of the restaurant resulted in a space filled with light. I sat down to the enticing aroma of a fish curry that arrived bubbling hot. The food was delicious and served in traditional clay pots and white plates. Their tagline “Welcome to Royalty” on the placemats felt rather apt as we were

treated like blue blood and more striking plates of food appeared. “Our specialty is our fish items,” remarked the operational manager Aby Mathew and we found an extensive list on the menu. Palace Food Court offers south and north Indian dishes, as well as continental. Home delivery up to 3km is available. Next stop was the coffee shop, which proved to be an intriguing space. It had a continuation of the black and white motif, but with red accents. With a good view of the airport and free Wi-Fi, this is the perfect place to relax with a sandwich and coffee. The coffee shop had a funky feel with zebra patterned trim on the glass that makes up two sides of the coffee shop. Whirls of red and black on white wallpaper added to the décor. It is open 24 hours to facilitate travelers and those on the move.

The bakery below was bursting with Kerala snacks made fresh in-house, with banana chips made in coconut oil being the most popular item. The bakery is perfect to get a quick snack or pack something tasty for your travels ahead. Opposite the Bakery is the banquet hall, which can be reserved for groups of 20 to 100 people. This is a perfect place for meetings or parties especially due to the proximity to the airport. The space doesn’t even have any additional cost apart from the regular food charges. Stop in at Palace Food Court next time you are catching a flight, or just come here any time to enjoy quality food with a refreshing atmosphere.

The tiny café with a huge heart

Café 17 proves to be the perfect place to chill with friends. Enjoy a charming ambience and delicious food.

I

rushed off the busy road and pushed open the café’s door. I had to stop for a moment, stunned at the change in environment. Gone was the constant noise of traffic, heat and dust. I was immersed in the cool, cozy oasis of Café 17 on the Kaloor Kadavanthara Raod. I soaked in the eclectic and charming décor. Behind me was a chalkboard wall covered in text art, another with minimalistic movie posters as well as a wall of books to read as you eat. Comfortable couches were dotted with colourful pillows, handpicked from Mumbai. I started with a chilled classic virgin mojito, and it was the perfect mix of refreshing and delicious. Then my “Paneer Tikki” burger came, and I was pleasantly surprised. I have come across far too many mediocre burgers, and this was anything but. Delicious, with the perfect combination of seasonings, spices and sauces, this was a burger to come back for. My friend had the extremely popular “Jijo’s Barbeque Chicken Burger,” and her first reaction was, “It’s mouthwatering!” Come here to try Café 17’s excellent burgers, mojitos, pastas or their popular Stroganoff. Everything on the menu is made in-house, including the delectable fresh bakery items. Manager Praveen Mohan said, “The Cochin crowd is very knowledgeable. You can’t fool them

e are all talking about it, nay raving about it; the phenomenon called ‘Premam’ that still runs packed in theaters. An old tale about young love that has been retold with the same elements but an all new outlook. Didn’t you feel that you had gone through all the moments in the movie, related to the antics between friends and remember yourself saying most of the dialogues growing up? How did they know it all? Shabareesh Varma smiles. Shabareesh or Shabari to his close friends (he claims that there are no other nicknames. We don’t believe you!) is comfortably settled with a cup of black coffee. Nothing cold he says, he is that dedicated to his craft, but there is no one cooler than Shabareesh at the moment. Shabareesh Varma proves an ace at tongue twisters. He is sitting under the lights, and there is no trouble breaking the ice. This is the first time we are meeting this multi-talented dude, but if you walked into the café we were shooting at, you would have never guessed. I am under the watchful eyes of the music gods, claims he, as he glances at the posters of the Beatles, Bob Marley, and others on the exposed brick wall. I sense a true music buff, quite obviously because his songs are on repeat in most places. Shabareesh Varma is a cool customer, no airs, no frills, just an ordinary dude with extraordinary talent. Pistah is proof enough.

Jokes apart, the movie was written with most of the actors in mind. It was a lot of fun. The movie itself is 70% spontaneity. There was a lot of adlibbing and improv. Renji Panikker was incredible to watch. He made up all the dialogues on the spot. Chemistry was very important for us. Just like on the banks of the Aluva river? There was a bunch of us who used to hang out all the time. The same team from Neram and Premam. Gopu’s tea stall was a favorite among us including Nivin and Siju. Life was fun in Aluva. I wrote the song in Chennai, but my heart and mind were on the banks of the Aluva river (grins impishly). Your are an actor, lyricist and singer. Your father was a writer and mother a violinist. Where did the acting gene come from? My father used to act in school and college. My mother is a great violinist and a teacher as well. I was never discouraged by them. I used to take part in all the activities in school like Kathaprasangam, recitation etc. I was a decent student too. What do you do when you are terribly angry? Heavy metal. I go to my room and listen to the likes of Metallica and Iron Maiden. Music means a lot to me and every mood of mine, whether angry, happy or sad is accompanied by music. What about love? My first love’s name was Mary, then came Malar…(we can’t stop laughing). I have been in love and out of it. Don’t think I have been turned down (the impish grin again). Anyways I am dealing with my first wife now- movies. So what is your agenda now? This is the time for love. Premam.

The air was humming with the concentration and dedication of the contestants as they started preparing their dishes. The six finalists came from varied backgrounds, but all shared a love of cooking. They had only a few hours to create the best dish possible, but they did have one big advantage. Wild Fish, Kochi’s favourite seafood store, was providing fresh seafood for all the contestants, and they got the pick of some of the best fish in town. Head judge J.P. Singh, Executive Chef from Le Meridien, offered expert advice to the contestants. He commented, “I really enjoyed everything.
