ON HOME GROUND The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium makes Kochiites proud. Maria John
O
ne of the largest stadiums in the country, the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium or the Kaloor International Stadium as it is popularly known, is home to many talents. It is not just the Kerala Blasters that call this home, but the Kerala Cricket Team as well. The stadium has really elevated the status of Kochi as the Mecca of football, as noted by the sports commentators at one of the matches in the city. Moreover, they agreed that watching football in Kerala should go down as one of the must do tourist things. We are in the big leagues Kochiites! The Kaloor Stadium has an official capacity of 60,500 spectators. Well that’s a number that we have surpassed many times to be one of the most awesome stadiums with the coolest football fans. No wonder that this is the noisiest stadium in the country, assisted by its architecture that makes everything sound larger than life. The stadium garnered attention during the first edition of the Indian Super League
10
as it recorded the largest number of fans to watch football in India with 61, 323 turning up to watch the match between the Kerala Blasters and Chennaiyin FC in November 2014. An average number of 40,000 fans attended every match in Kochi dressed in their team colors. The Stadium was built in 1996 on a waterlogged area by the Government of Kerala and the Greater Cochin Development Authority. Though it was built for football, many other sports have been practised in the stadium. The first international game played here was the cricket match between India and Australia in 1997. The stadium has thirty two gates that are monitored by CCTV cameras, dedicated facilities and utility rooms, and a dedicated grounds staff that need to start work for a match at least three months prior to D-Day. A special pavilion to honor Sachin Tendulkar is present here with many memorabilia. The stadium has been selected as one of the venues for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in India.

he is from Thevara and she is heading to China for something big. Iris Maju will be representing her country at the prestigious Mrs. World Pageant. Joining the likes of Aditi Gowitrikar and Aman Grewal, Iris has proven that you can realize your dreams wherever and whenever. A stream of light fell on her upturned face as Iris sat gracefully, getting her makeup done in the attic. An open cupboard of colored bottles, much thumbed books and other knick knacks in the room with whitewashed walls and wooden rafters on the ceiling made the moment feel like something out of a Jhumpa Lahiri short story. But Iris wasn’t an NRI with tales of maladies. Born and brought up in a typical family in Kochi, her life has been an adventure fueled by her desire to see and

do more. Grace and poise accompanied Iris throughout the entire shoot, unlike the kitschy elements in the room. Even when she was sitting or walking or showing us the glamorous crown or eating her extremely cheesy pizza at David Hall, she was graceful. With a Masters in Education Administration, Iris is a mother, a teacher and an environment activist. She has been working constantly to educate communities on the need to preserve the environment and lead a healthy lifestyle with the motto, “burn fat not oil”. How were you inspired to join Mrs.India? My life opened up after marriage. My husband is in the army and therefore we have been to many places. He has been extremely supportive. family supports you, but in the Mrs. World you have a family to support as well. It is a big platform with many opportunities. I have been able to bring the cause I work for to the front and people have been approaching me to work together. You are a mother, a teacher and an environment activist apart from being Mrs. India World. How do you manage these roles? The army background has really helped me to be a balanced person. I am a stickler for routine. I went in for the pageant wanting to win. I gave it a 100% and I was truly happy with the outcome. So do you train like Sandra Bullock did in Miss. Congeniality? I didn’t have any specific training before the
WtzupCity.com/COVERSTORY pageant. I think my army background was training enough (she laughs). What are the tallest pair of heels you have worn? I match up to my husband’s height in my four inch heels from Steve Madden. Did you always have a flair for style and glamor? I always used to carry myself well and people have remarked on the same. I enjoy style and am always the one who knows where to get all the good stuff. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry and make up unless it is for a function. I do take care of myself and work out. Having said that, Mrs.World is not just about glamor and style. What do you enjoy to do as a family? My family cycles almost eight kilometers every day. I enjoy Yoga as well. Since we get transfers almost every two years, we make a big road trip out of the move. I am always looking forward to a move and exploring a new place. We are always up for adventure. We are stationed in Shillong now and we are enjoying ourselves there.

True Colors
Set the right tone for your room to make your house a home. Maria John
T
here is no place like home they say. Which is why there is so much joy in personalizing your space. Color can really change a space beyond its aesthetic qualities. Architect Sreejith Radhakrishnan of Sreejith Associates gives us an insight into the color of your home.
The usage of color is a tricky one. Too much will make your home look like an amusement park and too little can border on boring and mundane. At the same time your home should not feel like a hotel or showroom. Lighter colors can make rooms look spacious and dark colors can make the space seem smaller. One might tire of strong colors after a while, so if you are not planning to paint your home too often, use color sparingly and strategically to set the right tone for each room. When one talks about color, it is not limited to the walls. It has to include all the elements in the space like the walls, floors, furniture, curtains and more. Another thing to keep in mind when choosing the colors you want to work with is to know the amount of natural light available in the room. Accent walls are a great way to bring energy to a room. Lighter shades are in trend now and you can play with different tones of the same color to define the space. Textured paints are the newest thing in the market that can certainly elevate the ambience.
External vs Internal The colors on the outside should be a reflection of the inside. Stick to similar tones and ideas when it comes to the entire structure. Formal Living Since this is a formal space, stick to basic colors like white, grey, beige etc. Keep it subtle and simple. Family Room This is room is where you can let your creative juices flow. Stick to similar tones. You can go crazy with wallpaper, textures and finishes. Dining Room Dining rooms are a great place to have an accent wall with energizing colors like red, orange etc Bedroom This is your personal space where you will be relaxing. Stick to lighter colors and if you want to go dark, go with an accent wall.

Kitchen The kitchen is an integral part of the house where a lot of time is spent, contrary to popular notions. Choose pleasant colors and natural tones, that will not tire you while you whip up yummy dishes.

Kuruvadweep, Waynad
Nelliyampathy, Palakkad
Gavi, Pathanamthitta
The Kuruva Islands, also known as the Kuruvadweep, comprise three islands along with few submersible satellite islands. The major island of Kuruvadweep has two fresh water lakes that are visited by various migratory birds and have rare species of herbs and orchids. Fitting IN Meet four different trainers who give a squat about fitness. Atheena Wilson, Varun Kannan
W
hen you are in a shoot with four different trainers, it’s quite a sight. All of them breaking into stretches, it’s funny how they warm up not only for themselves but also to each other. Especially when they comment on each other’s strengths. While Arunima leaped into her grand jete, Jophil commented, “She’s so flexible.” As he threw heavy punches, Arunima commented, “He’s got so much of stamina.” Sharath was brandishing his sword and shield and immediately awed us when he
Jinson Abraham
leaped into the air and performed the full split. Meanwhile, Nuthan was on a mat, practicing a headstand. All of them were gobsmacked and in unison they said, “We should do yoga.” Four different paths, but all of them have an innate energy, incredible impetus and, of course, the rippling muscles. There are many ways to lead a healthy lifestyle and finding time to excercise becomes crucial as our lives become busier by the day Whether you want to punch it out, release your
energy through graceful moves or learn how to control your breath, choosing something that you would enjoy is a crucial part of the work out session. The options in Kochi are plenty and we have great trainers who will hold you by the hand and lead you to a healthy lifestyle. They will not just tell you what to do in the studio but outside the studio as well. Great friendships have been formed in the classes and the trainers say that they help each other out a lot. After all a healthy mind must co-exist with a healthy body.

Mixed Martial Arts Jophil Lal
Kickboxing Studio 4:13, Kottayam and Panampilly Nagar Breaking sweat since 1997
Why: I’ve been a fan of freestyle wrestling - a mix of martial arts like Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing. That was my impetus to join MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). When I joined Evolution MMA, Mumbai, I realized I wanted to become a professional fighter. Myth Buster: There’s this huge myth about age and who it’s for. Anyone can do it, but it does require a great deal of athleticism, football stands on the seventh rank. If you are a pro, you can break baseball bats with your shin. (He grins) Your health quotient: I feel fresh, and it relieves stress. Also, Kickboxing improves your confidence at a whole different level.
Contemporary Dance Arunima Gupta
The Floor, Panampilly Nagar Shaking her leg since 1985
Why: Just knew I was born to do it. I started performing at a young age in Calcutta. I had wonderful gurus, Dr. Manjusri ChakiSircar, and her daughter RanjabatiSircar, who were my guides in dance. I never stopped dancing; I pursued it while studying, after marriage and motherhood too.
Myth Buster: Contemporary dance doesn’t always have to be acrobatic, rather it must be very artistic. It’s beautiful because it’s modern and also shows off one’s agility and strength. You are like a sculpture moving in space.
Your health quotient: Physically you would be amazed that dancing helps in the internal movement of organs which helps your internal system consequently. But when I dance with music, I’m in another realm. Beyond physical health, it helps me achieve holistic health.

Yoga Nuthan Manohar
Me Met Me, Panampilly Nagar Spreading smiles and light since 2009
Why: As a teenager, I was curious about philosophy and esoteric knowledge. By the time I grew up, it had drifted away. Many years later it was injuries, illness and stress that brought me back to yoga. Myth Buster: Many communities mistakenly think that yoga is a religious practice, and it’s against their religion, As a Christian, I often have to teach my community that yoga is a path to realize your potential. Your health quotient: Yoga has changed me from head to toe literally, my flat feet has been replaced with arches, spinal misalignment has been minimalized, menstrual problems sorted and now my immunity is super strong!
Kalari Sharath S Achary
SreeAgasthyaKalari, Panayapilly, Near Fort Kochi Training since1999
Why: As the son of Sivan Gurukal, the man who runs the Sree Agasthya Kalari, initiation into the art form of Kalari, it was a very natural thing for me to try it. Now I just can’t manage life without Kalari. Myth Buster: Kalari is just a self-defence technique. No, Kalari gives you specialized knowledge about the body and its functioning including energy centers in the body.
Your health quotient: (He breaks into as smile) As far as being healthy is concerned, the visits to the doctor have been so rare.

e live in an exciting world where there is a gadget or an app for everything. They keep evolving and every day we hear of the latest revolutionary addition to technology like Google’s Project Soli. So how do you decide when to upgrade?
upgrades could happen more frequently.
Budget – one smart way to assess your budget is to find out the amount of time you spend on a gadget to its cost. This comparison will help you make a smarter decision. Since the world runs on gadgets these days, make an informed investment.
Take your time – there is a reason this is the first advice. Some websites do remark that there is more satisfaction attained by waiting longer. You will be more confident of your decision and won’t be upset if the new gadget is only marginally better than your old one.
Research – there are plenty of shops and websites that review the latest gadgets. Keep track of developments. There are lots of apps that can be downloaded to upgrade instead of buying a brand new gadget. You could also update components and hardware.
Understanding usage – how much do you rely on your gadgets. Assess the amount of work and time spent on your phones, tabs or laptops. For people who use them for emails and the like, an upgrade every three years should work. For those who depend heavily on the speed and functions of the gadgets, the

BLUE EYED BABY This time, let your eyes shimmer like the ocean. The runways and models are sporting blue from clothes to eye make-up. How to Pull off Blue Eyeshadow
1 2 3 4 5
Before applying the eye shadow, start priming the eyes with an eye shadowprimer. Apply brightshade of eyeshadow . The eye shadow must start from your lashline. The shadow should fall on the crease of your eyelids and nothing more than that. It gives an edgy look. Use a complimentary color to blend in the shade. We recommend the Estee Lauder’s Eyeshadow in HyperTeal. To create a dramatic effect, give a shot at 70’s winged eyes. Start with a thin line at the inner corner of your eye and work out with thicker strokes with a flick at the end. To enhance the look and make an impact, use a mascara. Carefully brush the tip of your lashes with mascara. If you want extra volume, try fake eyelashes too.

Style Tips With Mahesh Dev Factors for Hair Dryness and Frizziness Natural Sensitization - Hair can be naturally dry due to hereditary conditions. It can also suffer from oxidative stress, caused by exposure to light and free radicals. Mechanical Sensitization - Heat, styling and frequent brushing can slow down the cuticle layer and cause a lack of lipid protection as well as loss of proteins. Chemical Sensitization - Repeated color and permanent texture services sensitize the hair and cause the loss of essential lipids and proteins. Solution with Nutritive At Glitz Salon we take utmost care to treat your tresses with responsible products. We recommend that you use a hair care range which contains gluco-active (lipids + gluco + proteins + amino + vitamins + antioxidants). The powered gluco active complex detects the driest zones in the hair fibre. Once they are on the targeted zone, the micro nutrients attach and diffuses all along the fibre. An antioxidant shield sets in place and dries out by neutralizing the unwanted molecules around it. Hair becomes protected, healthy, stronger and moisturized.

parky’s, the exciting corner of Lulu Mall, now turns more amazing after they launched two extraordinary games; Dark Escape and Coggins Laboratory. The 4D Dark Escape gives the gamer an amazing experience where you can roar, scream and laugh out loud with your hand held gun; or rather the joy stick. “Both our new rides are getting tremendous response from the customers. And it is more exciting that adults as well as children are coming to play the game”, says Mr. Manikandan, marketing manager of Sparky’s. The Dark escape is an encounter game where you can experience a 4D system. Once you enter the cabin to play, you will lose sense of the real world and become the encounter man. The four dimensional experience makes the game more thrilling, where you can physically feel what the character in the game feels inside the screen. Fancy being a sharpshooter? Coggins brings out the shooting talent of the player and gives quite a lot of targets to shoot down. The two new arrivals of Sparky’s are always engaged during the mall time since both the rides are popular among all ages. The extraordinary experience with an ordinary ticket cost makes people try these rides more than once. So get to Sparky’s and polish your gaming skills.
