The Wedding Weigh In

The fear of not fitting into your wedding attire is something that every bride or groom faces. We rush about planning diets and workouts. But before you jump in the weight loss bandwagon take a reality check.

T

he wedding is the trigger that motivates many people to get in shape. Ideally the right time to begin is about six months before the wedding. In this time frame, you can literally look like an entirely different person. It can be a complete transformation. But what if your wedding is sooner? Not to worry... You can still do wonders, even with a threemonth regimen. Even one and half months will show results... Normally gyms do not offer any discounts on short term memberships unless they are running a summer offer of 3 months or maybe a bridal package. You just have to realize that you’re not going to lose more than a couple of kgs. But you can strengthen and tone some key muscles so that even if you don’t lose a significant amount of weight, you will stand taller, you’ll have more energy and feel better,

and your clothes will definitely fit and look better!

Tips to help you hone in on healthy weight loss Make time for fitness: Many people attempt to lose weight by diet alone, but exercise really is key. There’s no way around it — no quick fix or magic pill. Not only does it help you shed the weight, it also reduces

stress, boosts your mood and helps you sleep. Release that sweat: Not only can it help you burn fat, sweating will improve blood flow, remove toxins from the body and help you to sleep better at night—all factors that will lead to that glow being captured in the photos that will last a lifetime. Get eight hours of sleep and limit stress: Research shows that stress and lack of sleep

wtzup.in/HEALTH contribute to weight gain. Don’t over train: The biggest mistakes brides and grooms make is overtraining — trying to do too much, too soon, and continuing to do too much too close to the wedding day. Bumping up your activity levels the week before your wedding isn’t going to make that much difference and you could get injured. Diet: Don’t skip meals, focus on what you eat: keep a food diary for two weeks (be honest!) and you’ll soon see where your weak points are. Don’t starve yourself in the weeks before the wedding. Not only is it not healthy, but it can also affect the way you will look on the wedding day, including your skin and your hair. With guests coming frequently, with people to visit and places to go, it is easy to gorge on everything that is offered to you. This is the time to work that will power. Avoid fried food, sweets, caffeine and colas. It is also a good time to cut down on alcohol and cigarettes. All this is bad for your skin. Instead eat lots of fruits and veggies and drink tons of water. This is the time to eat healthy, not starve to a size zero frame. You need loads of

energy before, during and after your wedding. So if you have a sleeveless dress, do the upper-body workout first — shoulder, biceps, and triceps. For most women, it actually is the upper arms, upper back, and shoulders that command the most immediate attention, with most concerned about getting rid of the ‘bye bye wave’. For a backless dress, concentrate on the core and back muscles.

FOR GROOMS: See your body through her eyes. Ask your fiancée to identify your most displeasing physical characteristic. It’s instant motivation. If she’s hesitant, make a list for her — abs, love handles, upper arms etc. Have her rank them from best to worst. Make the most-hated body parts your workout focus for four weeks then repeat the quiz for more motivation. FOR BRIDES: Fix what you don’t like... You can’t change your basic body type — you are who you are. So shop for the dress that looks good on you the way you look before you start your workout program and then enhance that look with the workouts. Once you have your wedding dress, put it on, stand in front of a full-length mirror, and look at the parts that will be exposed. As you do not have that much time, you can concentrate on the areas that will be seen first.

TAKING INVESTMENT DECISIONS To buy or to sell. We are plagued by many questions when it comes to investing. So how do you decide? Hedge Equities Ltd.

S

omebody said that successful investing is a marathon, not a 60 second dash. Most of us enter the stock market thinking we will “invest” in it. Then as days go by, the incessant media coverage and calls on the market creates a craving within us – when markets decline, we feel the urge to sell before losing all our money and when markets go up, and we start feeling that we may be missing out on gains by sitting on sidelines. Actually what is happening is a metamorphosis in our behavior - from an INVESTOR to a TRADER! Much of the investment community in India is focused on trading. And trading hinges on a person’s innate belief that he can time the market. Even the actions of those who openly acknowledge that we can’t time the market are often at variance to what they say. And very often the culprit is OVERCONFIDENCE! This is not to say that you are not a good investor. Probably you are as good an investor as you think. However, it might be beneficial to do a self-audit of your investing/ trading pattern to see for yourself if, You make investment decisions FREQUENTLY

1

without much research. You attribute the stellar returns on your stock picks to “your own innate ability to pick winners” and often brag about it, YET at the same time you attribute all the poor performance in your stock picks to things beyond your control i.e., you “explain them away”. You are more prone to buy when stock prices are moving up and even more prone to sell when stock prices are going down Whether overconfidence is aiding you or is hurting you in your investment choices is a determination that only you can make. But what you need to watch out for is whether your confidence in something is stemming from a rational assessment of its merits OR if it is simply brimming from your feelings at a gut level. Overconfidence stemming from emotional decision making can often be a recipe for disaster.

2

3

Emotions are part and parcel of almost all decisions we make in life. We all know that how we feel has a direct impact on how we think, react, respond, or even breathe. In fact, some of the studies conducted in the field of behavioral economics have shown that people tend to be more bullish about stocks on a bright sunny day as opposed to a cloudy gloomy day. Therefore whenever you are about to make major investment decisions, it might be a good idea to follow some small checklist (developed on the basis of your own assessment of where you tend to go wrong in your investment choices) so that you are not prone to impulse buying or selling. Of course, some of us may be tempted to think that we may miss the investment opportunity if we don’t act fast enough. But as Richard Branson eloquently put it, “Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.”
