H

ues such as grey, black and blue are not those that make one sit up and take notice. But for a man whose favourite childhood memories are of Christmas , they are colors that remind him of everything that shaped him. Elwin Charly is not a man of many words, but his creativity speaks volumes. Scrolling through his Instagram feed which define him in two short phrases – 90’s kid, Christmas love – will make one understand why he lets his work speak for itself, for it is far more eloquent than any words could be. As an artist who prefers the quiet of his house to any loud party, deciding to post his personal works on Instagram was just a small whim that has taken him much further than he could have ever imagined.

Making a mark Look through Elwin’s works and the first thing that pops into one’s mind is “how does he think these things up?” and that was precisely our first question for him. He started with a chuckle – “I do not have a process that I follow

intently, but by looking at an image I consider all the ways in which it could be manipulated and then work on it till I am happy with the result I get. I honestly look at the beauty of the work rather than the techniques, but somehow all the influences I’ve heard, seen and studied, manages to sneak into the work to make it what it is. There was a time when I thought of the final product and worked to achieve that and at that point in my life, it was necessary for me to think that way. But right now, I have more creative freedom and prefer to work in this way of making things up as I go along.”

Elwin and his love for Christmas are far from a veiled secret for those who follow his Instagram page. Hailing from a traditional Christian family, it was a time for celebration and his family is all about the good times.

Christmas cards, lights, trees and cold December rains were things that set the tones of his favorite childhood memories and now they often set the tone of his creative works.

He had even attempted to make a Santa Claus

WtzupCity.com/COVERSTORY /FEATURE sleigh when he was younger. While he may not use obvious motifs, the hint of winter manages to seep into his personal projects and even influences his musical choices which include Bjork, Sigur Ros, Birdy, London Grammar and the list goes on.

The way home Elwin charly is a true blue Kochiite, one whose speech is peppered with “scene” and “vibe” and one who got his fine arts degree from RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, right here in Kochi. While he may travel to cities like Bangalore to complete projects like CafeMoto, he prefers staying in his comfort zone in his home town. He pours his heart and soul into projects around the city, such as the recently completed work at Mill Hall in Fort Kochi.

His family is all settled here and his father Charly, or Lala to him, is an artistic soul who collects music records, does typography and even writes scripts, while his actual profession is motor winding. According to Elwin, his father is always young at heart and named his son after Electric Winding (EL+WIN) and buys him the funkiest clothes in his wardrobe and made sure his children pursued their talents. At a younger age, Elwin didn’t even know if art was something he wanted to pursue, but his father ensured that he joined an art school and it was his biggest dream to make Elwin a cartoonist in Malayala Manorama. Elwin's mother, Pushpa Charly hails from Kottayam and is her sons' biggest fan. Elwin’s brother Viswom John Charly (vivi_charly), is of the same penchant as his elder brother, but focuses more on the photography aspect of things.

Trodden paths After graduating from Art school, Elwin did what almost everyone does – work in a MNC and wonder if that is what he was supposed to do. But somewhere along the line he became aware of so much more that he could possibly do, after seeing the works of those from Papaya Media. When he was brought on by Ajay Menon to do the album art for the band Avial, he knew he had found his calling and his tribe, of sorts.

Kochi, that was done for the mill’s owner. When asked about his dream project, Elwin shrugged it off and said – “I really don’t think ahead to the future and I don’t think I am at a point to have a dream project. It’s not time yet. I just want to do work that keeps me going forward and happy.”

Looking Ahead After working in a space where he was free to think more creatively and was in fact prompted to do so, he ventured out by himself.

He founded E Visual Designers, where they undertake any project that is design related -from branding to wall art to interiors. His team includes Sreenath, Sandeep, Sharath, Vimal and Joseph Savio.Elwin’s latest projects include the likes of the Soubin Shahir movie Parava, first look posters of ‘Honey bee 2’, and the recently completed work at Mill Hall, Fort

oes the thought of a fun camp somewhere on a hilly place still give you goose bumps? But what about those less privileged friends of ours? The inspiring volunteers from ‘Make A Difference’ attempts to create an avenue in which underprivileged children can be taught to dream bigger and better every year at MAD Dream Camp.

The camps help children dream about their future goals and understand what it takes to achieve those dreams. It was held on 21 and 22 January at Greenberg Resorts, Idukki.

Around 100 kids attended the camp, which was supported by around 40 volunteers.

They offered the kids a surprised environment where they were able to experience a break from the daily strict routine. They got the best holiday experience ever, while attending valuable sessions, workshops and lots more.

MAD organizes Dream Camps with a vision that every child will be inspired to dream and believe in their dreams and have an idea on how to plan their dreams. The camp was a grand success with all the participant kids enjoying to their heart’s content.

After some exciting weeks of sportsman spirit and entertainment, the event ended with the final match between Aabasoft and TCS. Aabasoft beat Speridian in the semi finals.In the grand final match, TCS won the toss and chose to field. Aabasoft made 137 runs in 15 overs and won the tournament with a margin of 48 runs.

The Man of the Match award went to Sreejith of Aabasoft. Calpine Group CEO, Jijo G. John gave away the champions trophy to the winning team. All other trophies were given away at the Award ceremony that was held at Infopark. Sachin Baby, the Kerala cricket sensation and actor Ramesh Pisharody presented the winning team with the trophy.

The event was a whopping success and the organizers are looking forward to make it happen in a grander way the next year as well!

nflea.k held on 4th and 5th February 2017 was Kochi’s first ever flea market. The event was lauded for bringing together a number of great vendors and also for their great marketing tactics. Media Jockey was their official Media partner for the event and helped make the event a roaring success. While Onflea.k was their latest venture, Media Jockey was founded an year ago by Thomas Kuruvilla.

We caught up with him to know the story behind the company that believes in localized advertisement.

Starting from your latest campaign, how did the association with Onflea.k happen?

One of the founders of Onflea.k, Bhavya is actually my wife’s cousin and they approached us to be the Media partner. This meant that we were responsible for all their publicity campaigns including the hoardings, transit vehicles etc. They started off the venture without a lot of capital and were skeptical about spending it on advertising. But by taking that decision, the event became a huge success. Through the effort of the entire On flea.k team, the event which had was expecting only a turn out at of 400-500 people ended up having a footfall of 4000 people in just two days.

Did you plan on becoming an advertising guy?

How did this happen?

I did Mechanical Engineering and then MBA from IIM Kozhikode and joined my father in his business. I hail from Allepey and my father owns a company called Allepey Parcel Service or APS. We entered into the field of

education and started APS School of Logistics that was related to our main business. At APS School of Logistics, we teach multiple courses related to the logistics field. While running APS School of Logistics, I met a guy from an advertising company for creating campaigns for the school. This is the time when I got interested in advertising and learnt about various campaigns and more and finally ended up creating Media Jockey L.L.P. How and why did you decide on the name ‘Media Jockey’?

It took me nearly 3 months to come up with the name Media Jockey. So there are names like Radio Jockey, Video Jockey and then we landed on Media Jockey. Media can be anything ranging from outdoor, indoor, transit, digital, and mobile and when we started I didn’t have anything specific in mind. Media was essentially an umbrella term for all the work that we do.

What are the main tools used by the company for promotions?

Initially when we started off, we didn’t know exactly what we wanted to do. All we knew was about hoardings and outdoor advertisements.

Somehow we started doing campaigns for some hospitals, education institutions, micro finances companies and such. Some of the works that we did became hits and things fell on track. In the short time we have been in existence we have become all Kerala branding specialists.

A technique that we swear by is Hyperlocal Advertising.

What exactly do you mean by ‘Hyperlocal advertising’?

There are many bakers, accessory shops, textile shops and other small scale businesses who don’t think that they have advertisable products. They believe that by coming up with superior quality product, they will sell on their own. or simply through social media promotions. But until people realize that something like this exists inside a home or a shop, they won’t come to purchase it. We give visibility through advertising for them.

Once the potential customer enters the store and tries out a good quality product, they will keep coming back for more. There are many such ventures in Kerala and we are trying to educate them about the power advertising through these localized campaigns.

On a lighter note, Is it true that you are an aspiring actor as well?

(Laughs), I am not an aspiring actor as such.

But I have gotten chance to act in a few movies and ads and have taken up the offers that came my way. When I was younger, I had acted in the movie Lal Salam and has recently acted in a few advertisements such as for Vasundhara Sarovar Premier in Vayalar.
