Digging Deep, Crossing Far To commemorate the centenary of World War I, an exhibition was organised by Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) in association with Goethe Institute at Pepper House in Fort Kochi. Titled ‘Digging Deep, Crossing Far’, the exhibition essays the details of the 1914-18 war and India’s role in it, courtesy works by four noted artists: Ayisha Abraham, Gilles Aubry, Sarnath Banerjee and Surekha. The involvement of the British, French and other empires meant that over 10 lakh Indian members of the colonial army were employed during the war. Towards a Beautiful

Relationship 5 ways to improve your relationship in 2016 Varun Kannan

W

e have just stepped into a new year. This is the time to make plans for the days ahead. As far as your relationship is concerned, paying attention to these five areas will make for a better relationship with your partner this year. Face the rough patches Identify particular things that you and your partner have been arguing about over and over. Give a thought to the complaints that your partner makes about your callous or uncompassionate reaction or tone with certain issues. “Ask yourself, ‘What makes me most

uncomfortable in my interactions with my partner?’ Intimacy Allowing intimacy to slip would not only result in a fallout but it also makes it harder to get intimate again. For starters you could regularize your bedtime routine. Going to bed together solves a lot of problems Be a better listener Make it a point to hear your partner and then reflect back to them what you’ve heard with the aim of knowing whether what you heard is what they really meant. Communication keeps

Don’t be the donkey

misunderstandings at bay. Be more playful Being playful and bringing laughter to your relationship will lessen the daily stresses and the toll they take on your union. Loosen up, watch silly movies together, baby talk, call each other stupid names. Trust us, it helps. Golden rules You, the woman shall never tamper with his ego. Understand that his ego is what he is built on. And you. the man will never hurt her feelings even if you can’t make sense of it. Know that she needs them.

WtzupCity.com/WORK

Here are a few ways to get your tasks done in a smart way.

Varun Kannan

H

ere’s a simple truth: working hard on the wrong things does not make one successful. Too many people work hard at making sure that they’re doing things right but fail to consider first whether they’re doing the right things. Here are a few actions that one can take now to begin to turn things around. Plan It can begin with a calendar, a day planner or a task manager. By prioritizing our work then blocking out time for those things that are most important to us, we begin to guard our time for activities that have a high impact. Share Priorities Our teams cannot possibly know what our top priorities are unless we share them. Share your calendar with your executive team. By doing so, you put both parties in a position to

10

plan rather than to react. Create a not-to-do-list Energy spent doing tasks that have little impact is a recipe for failure. It’s easy to get caught up in routine tasks that minimize our ability. We should consider which tasks we spend time on regularly and then weigh their impact. If the impact is minimal, or if they distract us from things that will have a greater impact, we should consider whether there’s a way to automate or delegate them. Quit Too often the attitude that we must work hard prevents us from quitting a task when we realize that the outcome isn’t going to have the impact we had anticipated. There are times when it’s ok to quit. Especially if you think that the task at hand, even with your efforts is not going to succeed. It is always a better idea to

quit and invest your time and effort on a more fruitful activity.

Christmas

at Casino!

This festive season, CGH Earth’s Casino celebrated with some lip-smacking Christmas specials.

R

ight from the decor to the cakes and pastries, CGHEarth was geared up to welcome Christmas in style. ‘Green Christmas’ being their theme, the decor including the seven foot Christmas tree was wholly made with the upcycled products from the hotel. The celebrations began on December 18th and went on till Christmas. The chefs had put together a lip smacking Christmas Specials holiday hamper. The ‘Matured Plum Cake’ happened to be the star of the show. The cake was made with imported Afghani black raisins whose stems were handpicked by the chefs themselves and later were washed and dried. A grape juice was made separately and kept for 10 days for maturation. Later these were cooked with candied orange peel, ginger flakes, lemon zest and lemon

juice. After the cake had been baked it was kept aside for one month. ”The basic process of Osmosis takes place and the juice from the raisins is absorbed by the cake making it moist and delicious and since they are kept aside for maturation they are called ’Matured Plum Cakes’ ” says Pastry Chef Jemson.V.Jose. Jemson Vadakkudan Jose has trained under CGH Earth’s Mentor Chef, Jose Varkey, who fires the imagination of the younger generation to unleash their culinary potential; and Dominic Joseph, Alumni CIA, who is now heading CGH Earth Food & Beverage. The holiday hamper included Christmas frosted cake (Matured Plum Cake with frosting on top), Plum pudding, Candied Almonds, Christollen Fruit Bread, Chocolate Hazelnut Torte, Mincemeat Fruit Tart, Double Chocolate Brownie, Assorted Sable Cookies and Bonbons.

ChaiCofi

N

ervous would be an understatement to define what I felt as I stepped into ChaiCofi at Kaloor for my first interview. I took a moment to take in the overall ambience of the place. Mustering up the courage I climbed the stairs to meet Mr Faizalrazi Azeez, entrepreneur/ad film maker at TVC Factory. Faizal was in the middle of a shoot when our stylist introduced me to him. Giving a firm handshake and a charming smile he resumed the shoot. I heaved a sigh of relief and watched as the shoot progressed. He had an ability to make people around him feel at ease, laughing and cracking jokes whenever he could and as they took a break from the shoot we sat down for our interview. It takes a lot of courage to do the unconventional. Initially an electronics student, when did u realise that visual media was your true calling? Wasn’t it intimidating when you started off? Honestly, there wasn’t a moment of enlightenment as such. I had pursued photography even in my college days. Like I would often wonder how the symbol of the Mitsubishi car resembled the alphabet M and random stuff like that. Maybe that’s when I realised that I had a creative mind. Yes, the biggest challenge in the field was the competition, but I enjoyed it. What goes into the making of a creative ad, from the conception of the concept to its broadcast? When a client approaches us, we try to outline

12

WtzupCity.com/COVERSTORY their requirements. We call it the ‘Big Idea’. To reach the big idea we need to understand the client’s target customers and also the kind of placement that the product requires. For example, we had tried to incorporate the legacy of Pulimootil Silks into their fashionoriented ad. Of all the ads that you have been a part of, which one would you call the most memorable? My first ad for Magic Cave Cookies will always remain close to my heart. Another memorable experience was working with an actress whom I had idolised in my childhood days, Shobhana Ma’am! We hear that there is a drummer inside this ad- filmmaker. Is that true? (He laughs) I have always loved singing. While singing, I always gave it a background score, tapping on plates and tables. I haven’t learnt music professionally but I like giving composing a shot like I did in a recent JSW commercial. Of course, it had to be fine tuned by professionals later. So yes, I am a drummer but not a professional one! What do you feel is unique about TVC that has enabled it to stand a class apart from the others? The stand out factor in our company is the seven- member panel of directors that helps us to get the work done easier and faster. We

have an internal studio too that helps us to meet the client’s requirements any time. What would you have probably ended up doing if a creative director was not on the cards? I was pretty sure that I would end up doing something creative. My father worked abroad hence I had wanted to be a pilot as a child, so maybe I could have ended up being a commercial pilot.

Role Model: My father Favourite Cuisine: Authentic Kerala Cuisine Favourite Holiday Destination: Dubai Favourite Ad: The award winning Fevicol Ad Adventure Sport: I would like to play drums while riding. ( He laughs)

Who is Faizal outside the office? I am a person who believes in staying true to the situation. While shooting here, I had to pose as a model, while driving a car I need to be a vigilant driver and in front of my parents I need to be an obedient son. So I am whom the situation demands What advice do you have for aspiring photographers and ad- filmmakers? Even if you have taken up engineering or anything else for that matter, start working part time in the creative field. A point will come when you will feel confident enough to quit your professional studies and continue doing what you love. In my case, I am thankful for having found Sijoy Varghese and Dinesh who shared my dreams and partnered me. I am sure you will find someone too. That is when you need to approach your parents and say what I said to my mom “Sorry Mom, I started a film company!”

Billabong High International -

Education in its Truest Essence Billabong High International School is now in Kochi

A

young entrepreneur who has won accolades and proven his mettle in many areas, Mr.Shamsudheen realized that there was a lot to be done in the field of education when his son, Asher was born. Shamsudeen and his wife Alka, visited every pre-school in Cochin to find just the right place for their little one. The conspicuous vacuum in quality pre- school, primary and secondary education became very evident to him.The couple realised there was an urgent need to do something revolutionary to address the needs of those parents who sought quality education for their child. Being perfectionists, the couple set out on a quest for the best preschool which took them to international conferences and acclaimed educationists. Amidst discussions with friends in Dubai and Mumbai, the name Kangaroo Kids cropped up repeatedly as an institution that was hugely favoured by parents. Intrigued, Shamsudheen delved deeper to find that Kangaroo Kids was entirely learner-centric with a vision focused on a child’s creativity and leadership skills. Convinced, he approached the Founder of Kangaroo Kids, Ms. Lina Ashar and learnt to his

14

immense joy that she was the brain behind a brilliant and visionary path of education for preschools as well as grade schools, having introduced and innovated pioneering concepts in education over the last two decades. The meetings culminated in Mr. Shamsudheen being awarded the franchise for Cochin after a stringent evaluation process about two years ago. Nurturing young minds and creating child prodigies, the journey has been a delightful one. However, with parents voicing worries about transitioning their children into high schools where learning methods were based on rote and conventional learning, Shamsudeen decided that it was time for the next step, Billabong High International School. Billabong High International Ms. Lina Ashar’s vision for Billabong High International is to ignite human greatness in growing children and pre-adults- by fostering a love of learning, a talent for thinking and respect for hard work. The underpinnings of the education philosophy is education that values : • Aspiration over ambition

• Spirituality over religion • Wisdom over knowledge • A united world over divided one

Billabong High International is the only brand today that creates curriculum for all three Boards, viz CBSE, ICSE and IGCSE. The design and development of curriculum is one side of the coin called Learning – the other being classroom delivery. The two processes complete the circle that comprise teaching. In this, the important role of the teacher and the other school staff in breathing life into what is formulated after a great deal of research and study is effectively dovetailed. Proof of concept of this are internal and external – internally, via the 15000 lifelong learners globally over 38 cities in 4 countries and external validation via the national award for most innovative K12 curriculum. The quantum of research and new initiatives in education is increasing by leaps and bounds. New theories are emerging everyday; innovation and transformation are the key words and have taken the field of education by storm. To address this, Billabong High International has designed an engaging curriculum that captures the interests of the students by incorporating pedagogies that stimulate the mind and make learning an interactive process, that supports the teacher to enhance the teaching-learning process in

WtzupCity.com/FEATURE the classroom and also beyond it. The ‘enriched curriculum’ goes beyond the prescribed printed words of text books and the confines of the classroom to give a 360° perspective of a known fact in any given subject. The result is analysing, experimenting, applying, evaluating and challenging the proven facts to create new factual knowledge for the coming generations. It reflects contemporary thinking about what students need to learn in order to lead successful and rewarding lives. The ‘enriched curriculum’ imbibes the Curriculum Frameworks of the different Boards and the cultural backdrop of the learner. The goals and aims of education being universal remain the same for the varying boards. The curriculum ensures that learning is thought provoking and empowering since it is based on the latest theories, brain research and best practices in education. The Enriched Curriculum abounds in creativity since it is based on modern educational research and theories. Some of these that the institution consciously uses to give the curriculum its unique flavour and scientific temper are:

of-the-art audio-visual labs, science labs, language labs, tab labs, math labs and aeromodelling lab that reach out to the child’s logical side and a wonderfully constructed amphitheater, art & Craft, dance & Music halls and painting studios etc that will aid creative pursuits.

• Neil Fleming’s VARK theory ( Visual Auditory Read/Write Kinaesthetic styles of learning )

• Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences. • Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Domains • Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Objectives • Theories of Brain Research Billabong High International School, Cochin Billabong High International School (BHIS) campus at Cochin is spread over a sprawling 12-acre modern, green, pollution-free campus in the Suburban part of the City. The campus is laid out with infrastructure and facilities that support the student’s life at campus such as spacious air-conditioned classrooms, the best teacher student ratios, multimedia systems, Smartboards (Digiboards) and Wi-fi connectivity throughout the campus. The school uses the friendly TPS App (Teacher, Parent & Student application software) electronic communication tool for easier access of student feedback to parents. The left and right brains of the children are beautifully engaged with Advanced international standard computer labs, state-

BHIS will also have dedicated bodies to nurture the various aspects of a child’s education; the Sports and Games Academy, Arts and Culture Academy, Entrepreneurship Development Academy, Leadership Academy, Life-Sciences Academy, Greenathone club to name a few. An IAS academy will also be operated within the campus to groom the children to administrative services with an active learning system of nationally renowned trainers. Excellent facilities and coaching are available for all major sports including football, cricket, swimming, skating, basketball, badminton, athletics, tennis, volleyball and squash is made available and indoor games like snooker, pool, chess, caroms, table tennis and special training for kho-kho, kabaddi, gymnastics, karatte,kalarippayattu,king-fu, kick boxing. Horse riding pits and a horse farm are also available at Billabong High as the school believes that learning to control and care for an animal much larger than themselves has a tremendously positive impact on the life skills of a child.

The hostel at Billabong is a fusion of global excellence in terms of facilities and a friendly, caring and supportive environment allows the child to blossom fully. Yoga is an integral part of the Billabong High International curriculum to gain spiritual, emotional and psychological fulfillment – conducted in a Yoga Centre led by qualified yoga trainers. Air conditioned school buses ply to different parts of the district with GPS to monitor movement and ensure the safety of the children. Billabong High International Cochin believes that it can go a long way in creating a revolution and setting high benchmarks in imparting lifelong habits of success to achieve Ms Lina Ashar’s and Mr.Shamsudheen’s dream of creating lifelong learners and global citizens of tomorrow.

Up your Art

If you want to express who you are to your guests, art is probably the best way. Be inspired by some of the famous art pieces and enjoy our tips for purchasing art and decorating your home with it too. FWD Media

Balance, Scaling, and Juxtaposition Balance in art is crucial. Find a balance between the conceptual meaning and the finished piece. The purpose of a great art is to challenge your views and be able to stir multiple perspectives. While you attain balance, learn also to juxtapose. It’s not necessary to stick to one genre of art; you can get creative mixing and matching tones, scales, mediums, and sizes. For example, if you have a large wall, an arrangement of small pieces and mixing it with mirrors can look astonishing. Be adventurous trying to compliment the space with the room and at the same time not getting lost.

It’s is one of 15 17th century Dutch paintings on view at New York’s Frick Collection through early 2014.

Frame your art Most of the time your art looks better when it is framed. Framing can make the piece appear more expensive and classy. Always make sure to invest in a good one. If you prefer mounting it on canvases, stick to a very large painting mounted on thick gallery stretchers. These can be as costly as a frame. The artwork portrays the artist’s dedication and practice, and so it demands to be well-finished. Thus it is important to give attention to the frame or the canvas its mounted on.

People prefer to hang paintings rather than using other types of wall décor. Contemporary paintings have become the latest trend, however, there are certain things that should be taken into account while decorating your house

interior tips with sreejith Choosing the right decor

Colour, colour, what colour do you choose? The most important thing that has to be taken into consideration is the colour combination.

Make sure that the colours in the painting blend well with the colour of your walls. You could also opt for colours that stand out but they need to blend at one point or the other. Size matters here! A small painting looks pretty awkward when hung in a big room and vice versa. Decorate the room in a way that it does not look empty or congested.

It’s called the milkmaid braid, but the oh so humble hairstyle is definitely hitting the red carpet.

T

he milkmaid braid is quite a treat compared to the mundane French plait or the overdone fish tail braid. Lorde made it quite popular in her video, Tennis Court and then the rave began. Usually a better style for the long tresses, but you can also experiment with your short hair. The Milkmaid braid style has caught the fashion world in its tresses. You spot it at the biggest of award shows adn red carpets So, if you think you would want to go ahead with this look, here are the tips to pull of the hair style.

Making the Right choice Hair expert Mahesh Dev gives his expert opinion on choosing the perfect care range for your hair. ORIGINAL & MINERAL Style Guru Styling Cream, 150ml

Brush your Hair Keep your hair the way it is, you don’t have to straighten if you have wavy hair. Run your fingers through, till your hair looks neat. If you have the poker straight hair, brush your hair to avoid those tangles. Parting Time Part your hair down the middle so that both side have an equal amount of hair. Then rub some styling cream into the root, it makes it easier to hold your hair in place. Plait Away Part your hair ( Dutch double plait ) on either side evenly. After this, safely secure the end with another band. If you want to create extra volume, don’t tie your braids too tightly. Plait the other side as well. Hair Spray Use the hairspray to keep your hair strands in place, so that the hairstyle doesn’t look unkempt. The Final Step Pull the plait upwards and across our head. It should look like a headband. To keep the plait steady use hair grips to keep it in place. Then pull over the other plait. To disguise the hair grips, place it under the other plait. Final Touch Use hairspray for a neat style.

es! We are talking about Kerala’s only ice staking rink at Sparky’s. If you are a person who loves ice skating, you don’t have to go to the Icy Mountains of the north when you have an ice skating rink at our very own Lulu. If you are someone who has never learnt how to skate, Sparky’s has a team of dedicated trainers to teach you the same. This season of the year is the best time to head out to the Sparky’s where they have come up with attractive offers for newyear. The general opinion is that the rates at Sparky’s are affordable when compared to other ice skating rinks in India. The rink is open from 10:30 am to 10:00 pm. Sparky’s happens to be the one stop destination for your family. As the kids learn to ice skate, the adults could very well engage themselves in the classy 12 lane bowling alley or indulge in the world class 5D cinema experience. If you are trying out skating for the first time, it would be advisable not to go on weekends as the rink would be abuzz with people both young and old. So what are you waiting for? Welcome this winter season with the ice skating rink at Sparky’s!
