Indefinable Utthara Model, dancer, singer, actor, director, cinematographer… Starlet Utthara Unni is a pro at numerous roles and she has no signs of stopping Fathima Abdul Kader

Arun A Menon

Lakshmi Babu

Harbinger of Spring

Vipin Vishwanath

E

ver since the mother-daughter duo was interviewed on JB Junction, Utthara Unni, the daughter of actress Urmila Unni was expected to be seen on screen. In a short time Utthara has made a name for herself even before entering the world of acting, through her talent in dance and modelling. She is fresh off her on- screen debut in Lenin Rajendren's Edavappathy in which she plays a double role. On the morning of her interview, as soon as she stepped out of her car at Harbinger of Spring in Panampilly Nagar, in her white dress and wedge heels, her open smile and excited chatter quickly showed that she was a girl who belonged in front of the camera. Discussing music, shopping, books and body image issues, the chat took us to various points in Utthara’s life as she posed and breezed through the photo shoot. What is the story behind your burning sun tattoo? This tattoo was done 2 years ago at Chennai when I accompanied amma to get her tattoo done. It was a sudden decision, but I love it. The design itself is inspired because I was born under Suryadarsha and now I cannot wait to get my English Zodiac Sign Libra tattooed as I know I am one with exemplary Libran traits. Being a dancer we know that you take excellent care of yourself, how do you manage with your busy schedule? I enjoy eating and experimenting with food, so I am not one for starving myself. I think I would give the most credit to excellent genetics because I have been blessed with a fast metabolism. Being a dancer also requires hours of practice every day and that is good enough to keep anyone in shape. Even when I

10 12

am not dancing, I do light stretches on a daily basis. Although I love my lean appearance, I’ve had people asking me to put on weight or commenting that I look starved. But I know that I am healthy and so I do not let comments get to me. Talking about opinions, how was it growing up as the daughter of a celebrity? To be honest, when I was growing up, Amma was always there and she didn’t feel like a celebrity to me, and I never had any experiences that made me think otherwise. I had a normal childhood, attending Marthoma School in Kochi, nurturing a celebrity crush on Shahid Kapoor while growing up, and fighting with amma because I may not end up liking what she picks out for me to wear and so on. I think I actually realized amma’s fame when I got older, started dancing and people started comparing her with me. I think this is in fact the biggest challenge I face on a daily basis. How did you come into the world of modelling? The owners of Bhima stayed in our neighbourhood. As a kid, I used to ask Saroj aunty, the owner’s wife, if I could become a model and she always told me I could. So when they were looking for a new model for their advertisement, they asked me to give modelling a try and that is how I landed my first modelling job in the 11th grade with Bhima. We all know you are a model, dancer and now actress, what other talents do you have up your sleeve? Dancing is my first passion, but I also love singing. In fact, I already have a Malayalam Arabic song that was released last year called

WtzupCity.com/COVERSTORY “Pathirapontheril”. I also have a Hindi album coming out soon, but since there are talks of it being picked up by a good music label (fingers crossed), the release date has not been set yet. I also enjoy drawing and painting as a hobby. We have heard that you are an expert at multitasking, what are the things that you are proud to have achieved in the last few years? I guess I got my talent for multitasking from Amma. In the last five years, I did my degree from SRM College, MA from MOP Vaishnav College, also a BFA in Bharathanatyam. Since the BFA was a course that only required me to attend classes twice a week, it was easy to complete it along with my regular studies. I also directed a short film called Randam Varavu that got good response and worked part time as an assistant cinematographer on another project. Dance performances keep me busy across India and UAE. In fact, mom and I started a dance school called Angopanga in Bahrain. I got the offer to act in Edavappathy while I was still in college and the shooting was done during the last three years. It was an exciting opportunity, especially to work with Lenin Rajendran. At the end of the day, what do you want to be known for? I want to be known beyond being a dancer or celebrity, and as a person who has the right outlook about the world she lives in.

"

I think Kochi in rainy season is a favourite moment for me because I grew up here and this city is my home

DRAMA

RAmAN RAGHAV 2.0

In Conversation With Shaun Romy You can take Shaun out of Kochi, but you can't take Kochi out of Shaun Fathima Abdul Kader

A

movie about an old Kochi village that housed daily wage earners, protagonists who look less than glamorous and a frequently idolized young star portraying a man in his forties, Kammattipaadam was yet another movie from Rajeev Ravi filled with surprises. This movie also marks the debut of the dusky biotechnology engineer Shaun Romy who shed her glamorous avatar to portray Anita-the daily wage earning, underappreciated female lead of the movie. What did it feel like going from being a model to making your debut as such a nonglamorous character? For me, modelling was a hobby, so when I went to the audition I just really wanted the part as it was a Rajeev Ravi movie. When they explained the entire character to me, I felt happy to do the part because they wanted someone with dark skin tone and I didn’t have to hide my real skin tone for a character. I was a little scared at first about the clothes and the no makeup look, but as the shooting continued I realized that those are not really the things that matter. What was the biggest challenge while portraying “Anitha” on screen? I felt the Kochi slang and the language were the hardest hurdles for me. I was in Bangalore for 16 years and I have only settled back in Kochi for the last 3 years. Having lived here for the last three years and doing a movie based in the city, what

14

Miles Johnson

are your feelings about Kochi? As if by coincidence, one of the first things I did when I moved to the city three years was watch Annayum Resulum by Rajeev Ravi. I saw a lot of beauty in that movie, through the stories, the locations and the music and all that made me love the city. After doing Kammattipaadam I feel quite sad as well because the place Kammattipaadam is not what it used to be anymore. It is not by any means something that happens only here but in case of most rural places. Did you have previous acting experience? Not really, in Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, I played the role of the heroine’s friend but that was just a small role without lines.

Are you going to focus on acting now? I think so, because I have come to love the experience of acting. But I do not have any fixed plans as of now. If you could play any Malayalam character from the movies, which would it be? I know it is ambitious but I think some of the roles that Urvashi has done would be my first pick. I feel that she has come across as effortless in most of her characters and her character choices are all that I have admired.

Bring Home the Best Bacon 8 reasons why you should go to Big Joe’s for quality proteins Maria John

J

uicy ribs dripping in barbecue sauce, a suckling pig, roast chicken with crispy potatoes, piping hot vindaloo with the right amount of tanginess, chicken tikka kebabs smothered in dip…the hero of the dish as they say in Masterchef Australia, is the protein. Getting the right protein for your food dreams is not that easy in Kochi, well that is till you enter the Big Joe’s Cold Storage. Here are few of the many reasons why you should go to Big Joe’s and meet the Big Joe himself.

1

Over 50 varieties of meat products Big Joe’s stocks frozen meats include chicken, pork, mutton, fish, seafood, duck and more. Get pork chops, ribs, flavored sausages, seer fish, chicken breasts, chicken legs, mussels, a whole range of cuts and meats. Big Joe will soon stock beef as well.

3

Meet Big Joe Big Joe is always available at the store, always ready with a warm greeting and a ready smile. A foodie himself, Big Joe will help you with the products and even share his favorite recipes with you. Though he claims he is not a great cook like his mom, his passion for food is rather evident in his excitement. Brought up abroad in different countries, Big Joe understands his meat like no one else. And if you want a particular cut or product, he will get it for you.

4

Tried and tested Every product in the store in tried and tested. Big Joe tells us stories of how he refused to stock some products from brands he sells, just because he didn’t like them. There was also a man who just walked into the store, and impressed with Big Joe’s knowledge about his products, got onboard to sell his meat items. So you have Big Joe’s thumbs up for the products in the store.

5

2

National brands Big Joe’s stocks national and international brands including Tanny’s, Quickee’s, DLG Ranch, Suguna, Sea Sparkle, Chevon, Delicious and more. Products come from metros in India and even Srilanka. A large number of cafes and restaurants in Kochi source from Big Joe’s.

Peking duck, suckling pig and more rare cuts in Kochi! A delicious Big Salmon from Norway to serve as hors d'oeuvres or Fletcher's lamb from Australia? It is mission possible in Kochi, thanks to Big Joe’s Cold storage that stores even pork belly. Products are subject to availability, but all you have to do is give Big Joe a call or send a whatsapp message and he will let you know. All the rare meats are to be pre ordered.

Where else in Kochi would you find a suckling pig, stuffed turkey or a peking duck!

Vir Das … Unbelievable. Unstoppable. The star will be at JTPAC on the 25th to have Kochiites rolling with laughter Anish Shankar

V

ir Das is a stand-up comedian who had challenged the status quo when he burst in the comedy scene in India 13 years ago. Since then he has sold out arenas all over the globe, starred in movies and hosted TV shows, and has launched his own comedy rock band, Alien Chutney. One year after his ‘Unbelievablish Tour’, he comes back to Kochi on June 25 for an encore performance at JTPAC. We caught up with him to find out more about the art of stand-up comedy and how its evolving in India. You’ve come to Kochi last year as part of the ‘Unbelievablish Tour’. How do you find the audiences in Kochi responding to stand-up comedy as compared to other metro cities? We had kicked off the Unbelievablish Tour last time from Kochi. We had such a good time here. This is round 2 of the ‘Unbelievable Tour’ and we’re performing at all the big cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata and we wanted to do it in the smaller cities too. So we’re coming back this year. One of the reasons we’re coming back is because a lot of people didn’t get a chance to see it. So it’s on popular demand. As far as the audience goes, I don’t think cities are different. I think the rooms are different. I think in Kochi it’s always a younger room. They’re fun loving, light

hearted and young crowd that come to watch the show. You’re someone who has performed stand-up successfully at the international level. How does the comedy scene there differ from that of India? International audiences tend to be more aware of stand-up comedy as art form, whereas in India it’s a new market and we are still wrapping our heads around different types of stand-up comedy. But internationally, the audiences have seen quite a lot of comedy already. To be honest, in the US or UK the standard of comedy is a lot higher. For the same ticket, you can get a much better comedian. If I’m playing a club in the US, it could have been that Louis CK performed there or Chris Rock was there before. So once you sell out in those clubs, your equity also rises. You’ve paved the way for the new generation of comics who are changing the stand-up comedy scene in India through Weirdass Comedy. Tell us more about that. Weirdass comedy is one of those companies, when you want to become a standup comedian you’re given an opportunity. It’s just a cool place for you to collaborate and work

on your ideas. Most comedians are kind to me by saying that I’ve promoted or brought out comedic talent, but it’s not something I’ve actively done. I’ve been busy writing jokes. Talking about writing jokes, how do you come up with your material? Do you like to be the voice of the common man? I like to mix it up. The perfect comedy show is when we walk the middle path between what the audience wants to hear about and what we want to talk about. You shouldn’t be too self-indulgent or pandering to the audience a lot. So a little bit of politics, a little personal stuff, some light stories and talk about the audience’s life as well. So it becomes a really good story that goes in and out of that single theme. That’s what Unbelievable tries to do. It begins as a story about me but ends up being. What more did Vir Das say?
