Head Chef Ramesh Kukreti, who spearheads the restaurant, would not give away the secret recipe but let us in on the fact that it was the extra care taken to keep the juiciness of the patty that seals the deal. The South Indian, North Indian and continental cuisine on the menu stays true to their authentic roots. The team strives to serve you true regional flavors in the star rated setting. is the key flavor. I go out and " Authentic sample the local cuisines where ever I

hen I stepped into the location for the cover shoot, I was met with a tumult of actions- Shalu Rahim making mayhem and making friends with everyone and Niranjana Anoop taking expert selfies while having the final touches put on her long locks. As soon as the cameras were set, the two were ready and kept breaking into (often very audible) laughter. With her classical dancer refinement and his obviously wild “vibes”, I was convinced that they were polar opposites except for their shared love for the Malayalam movie industry and their infectious liveliness. The more I think about it, the more evident it becomes that Niranjana Anoop might as well be Hannah Montana- she is a regular school student by day, who cannot wait to finish off her stint as a twelfth grader. During her downtime, she

acts in movies, dances and models. Niranjana has been dancing for as long as she could remember. Her mother Narayani Anoop is her first teacher and best supporter who tags along on shoots and gives her expert feedback on everything. Niranjana made her Mollywood debut in Mohanlal starrer “Loham” as Muthumani’s daughter and got mass appreciation for her portrayal of the lovable yet rebellious character. Shalu Rahim has always been an expert at juggling various roles. This easy going- full of life actor is an aeronautical engineering graduate who loves to DJ and is a badminton champion. Shalu says he would love to become a professional traveler and thinks that “being a human being” is the toughest career path. This newbie actor made his debut in “Kammattipadam” as Dulquer Salman’s younger self. Due to his ceaseless passion for the world of film, Shalu has signed onto a number of projects that is yet to be announced.

Onam ombres A few things you know and a few things you didn’t, about our favorite festival Pushpa M & Atheena Wilson
W
e love Onam and we love the stories about this exciting harvest festival. Have you heard them all?
Pookalam
Every intricate design in the Pookalam or floral carpet has a particular story, from the flowers to the relevance of each ring. Starting from Atham, a ring of flowers and leavers are added to the Pookkalam daily, reaching its final shape on the Thiruvonam Day. Symbolically, the ten rings or steps represent the ten deities in the Hindu pantheon – Ganesha, Shiva and Shakti, Shiva, Brahma, Pancha Bhoothangal, Shanmughan or Muruga, Guru, Ashtadipalakar, Indra and Vishnu. Thumba is the most important flower as it symbolizes light that radiates in the morning.
Vallamkali The traditional snake boat race is an adrenaline inducing event. The story goes that, 10km up the river Pamba from Aranmula, the head of the Karoomana Namboodiri family offered his daily prayers. He was waiting to feed a poor man to complete the ritual. After a long wait, he closed his eyes and prayed to Krishna. As he opened his eyes, a boy stood before him. He bathed, clothed and fed him. The Brahmin was startled when the boy vanished. After an endless hunt for him, the Namboodiri concluded that he was God. To commemorate the event, he began to bring food to the temple. To protect the food from river pirates, they made swift snake boats to accompany the entourage. The boat is maintained even today by oiling it with a mixture of fish oil, coconut shells and eggs.
Thiruvathira
Pulikali
This popular folk dance is regarded as an elegant dance form as the lasya or the beauty elements predominates. The songs are known for their literary flourish and according to tradition the dance is to be performed by maidens to attain everlasting marital bliss. According to legend, Thiruvathirakali brought the deity of love, Kamadeva, back to life after Shiva reduced him to ashes. The songs used are based on Krishna-Leela or Shakunthalam.
It is an enactment of hunting with a hunter and feline beasts. Also known as Kaduvakali, the dance is accompanied by percussion
14
instruments like thakil, udukku and chenda. The origin dates back to over 200 years, when King Ramavarma is said to have introduced the folk art during Muharram. Mohammedan soldiers of the British Army stationed in Thrissur in the army area, used to celebrate Muharram with fervor. They used to perform the art form decked as tigers, which used to be enjoyed by locals. The best place to watch the Pulikali is the Swaraj Ground in Thrissur when thousands from all over Kerala come to perform the dance.
Sadhya Last but definitely not the least, is the feast that Malayalis wait year long for. The Sadhya is to be enjoyed in many courses. You would be surprised to know that earlier Sadhya was not so sumptuous. There were only six items with the mains being Kaalan, Olan and Erissery. Now there are over 10. The Adapradhaman (the sweet payasam) is so called as it is the first thing to have in the meal. The Olan serves as a palate cleanser. The buttermilk is great for digestion. The Naakila that the feast is served on should have its narrow end facing the left of the diner sitting on the floor. When you are done with the meal, you are to fold the leave away from you, signifying that you are completely satisfied. If you fold towards you, it means that you did not enjoy the meal.

Wake Up Kochi, Says Kalki The actress was in the city recently to present her play at JTPAC Likhitha Nair
K
alki Koechlin thinks all of us need a redbull! The Margarita With a Straw actress, who was recently in Kochi to direct the play ‘The Living Room’ at JTPac expressed her despair (like the rest of us Kochiites) at the city shutting up pretty early. That being said, Kalki does think we are a very educated and wellmannered state.”I love the people here. Everyone speaks such good english” - says Kalki Koechlin. (Fist bump, fellow Mallus). Kalki took the movie world by storm with her debut role in Dev D. She has never been shy of trying out unconventional roles and conventional roles. Kalki was raised in a small village in Pondicherry and she remembers growing up speaking French at home, Tamil outside and English in school. “I was raised with no barriers of religion. I think that is what made it easier for me to be around all kinds of people”, Kalki says. Her short video 'The Printing Machine’ was a much controversial insight into how media is failing to be a pillar of justice. Kalki thinks that the consumers of news media is too distracted. The very influx of information makes the process just about taking and giving out the news we see, without processing it. The Play Kalki was in Kochi to stage the play she had directed, The Living Room. The play is

Kalki and Kochi This is not the leading actress's first visit to Kochi. She had created a buzz with her low profile visit to the Kochi Muziris Biennale of 2014. Kalki is not much of a follower of Malayalam movies or music, but actress Revathi is one of her closest friends, and one Malayali she is happy to be acquainted with (I coughed twice but she seemed to ignore me). However, the actor created a mighty buzz in our Kochi with her entrance, as proved by the many Facebook selfies I happened to see the next day. She wishes to have more time to spend in the city.
