A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

You might be surprised to learn that I follow almost as many old-house accounts on social media as I do knitting-centric accounts. It’s true! For as long as I can remember, DIY and home improvement have been a part of my everyday life. When I was in elementary school, I would babysit my younger cousins while my parents helped my aunts and uncles move walls, build decks, and paint countless square feet in their homes.

And today, my husband and I have touched nearly every corner of our 1940s Cape Cod-style home at some point over the past 15 years to keep it standing as long as possible.

At first, it might seem like a stretch to connect knitting with old homes, but they have more in common than you might think. And no, I’m not suggesting the connection simply because they have both been around a long time. Rather: Resourceful, talented, and creative are all words that could describe both a knitter and someone who decides to remodel their kitchen. Each industry has immediately identifiable trends, favorite suppliers of quality products, and brands that are trusted when it comes to learning how to do what needs doing. Also, seeing great before-and-after images of remodeling projects is like seeing skeins of wool become finished garments and accessories. And both often take more time and patience to complete than you might expect.

When planning this issue of Wool Studio, I asked the talented team of designers with whom we work to find inspiration in one of the old-house greats: Victorian artist, designer, and craftsman William Morris. The designers’ interpretations of Morris’s work have led to projects with a beautiful, timeless, and classic aesthetic that I have no doubt will stand the test of knitting time. Their great work would not have been possible without incredible yarn and fantastic tools. So, I’d like to extend a special thanks to each of our sponsors who saw the potential of these designs and said “Yes!” to having their yarn featured. I’d also like to thank Signature Needle Arts and Euculan for their support. Exceptional products make for even better finished projects.

KNITTING IN THE ROUND: THREE METHODS

There’s an age-old question in the knitting world: double-pointed needles or magic loop for small-diameter knitting? In our informal survey, the answer was a very firm “DPN” or “magic loop,” with little to no gray area for the other technique. Not to mention the third who knit with two shorter needles.

This black and white answer led us to delve deeper into the tools for these three methods.

Signature double-pointed needles are available in four different lengths. Their colorful aluminum shafts feature “slip/grip” to keep the needles from falling out of their stitches when knitting in the round.

DOUBLE-POINTED NEEDLES Also known as DPNs, double-pointed needles have been around for centuries. In fact, they used to be the only way to knit in the round. If you’ve ever seen Victorian-era images of knitters, we think you’ll agree that the DPNs of yore look like bicycle wheel spokes.

Many modern knitters consider DPNs a bit fiddly because manipulating four or five needles at a time can be cumbersome. Plus, sometimes needles fall out of the work completely! DPNs can also leave ladders, or loose stitches, between needles where one needle transitions to another. These are valid concerns. However, with the right kind of needle, those issues can be alleviated.

The engineers at Signature Needle Arts worked hard to address these problems. They created DPNs with a “slip/grip” needle stalk that keeps your yarn—and your project—on your needles. This finish enables you to knit faster and easier without having a needle fall out as you’re moving from one needle to the next.

Similarly, having better control of your needles also cuts down on those pesky ladders. You can be confident that your needles will stay in place when you give your yarn that extra little tug while moving from needle to needle.

Signature DPNs come in 4", 5", 6" and 8" lengths.

The 5" needles have a stiletto point on each end, which is Signature’s sharpest point option and great for fine detail work such as lace or cables.

The 4" DPNs come with a stiletto point on one end and a blunt point on the other end. This allows you to choose which end works best for your project. This kind of customization is what we’ve come to expect from Signature Needle Arts, and oh, do we appreciate it!

In addition, there’s a set of DPNs for cable knitters which includes seven needles in a range of sizes from Size 1 (2.25 mm) to Size 5 (3.75 mm).

The slip/grip finish on these needles keeps your stitches in place as you cross even the most complicated cables. We love these!

MORE OPTIONS FOR KNITTING IN THE ROUND

HOW TO WASH AND CARE FOR LUXURY KNITWEAR Andrea Lotz

Does the idea of washing your luxurious knitwear make you nervous? Every knitter has heard horror stories of handknitted items shrinking in the wash or tall tales of handwashing eating up a whole weekend. Fear not: It is possible to combine care and efficiency in washing even the most precious handknits.

Supplies for hand washing and blocking knitwear.

he proper care of knitwear made with quality wool or luxury yarns will keep these treasured pieces in your wardrobe for years to come. To begin lengthening their wearability, know that you do not need to (nor should you) wash your garments after every wear. You can simply refresh knits with a steamer and a spray, such as Eucalan’s Flatter spray, to freshen their scent and release wrinkles between washes, if needed.

There are two critical times when fully washing a garment is a must: midseason if you wear them often, and at the end of their season to protect before storage. Body oils and perspiration can discolor knits if left unchecked too long, and odors attract pests that can ruin your handiwork.

WASHING YOUR HANDKNITS The process of caring for your luxury projects is not unlike the blocking process. Start by sorting your projects. Keep bright colors, especially hand-dyed yarns, separate from anything onto which the color might bleed. You may also wish to set aside your most delicate knits, such as those made with mohair, suri, and other specialty yarns, to wash separately.

Submerge the knitted item completely in cool water to which you've added a no-rinse wash such as Eucalan Delicate Wash.

• Wool wash: a no-rinse wash such as Eucalan Delicate Wash saves water and time; • Towels: absorbent but nonshedding towels; and • Flat surface or drying rack: flat surfaces or blocking mats take longer but give more control; a drying rack allows more air circulation but may leave creases or allow fabric to stretch.

WASHING MACHINE METHOD A top-load machine, which can pause midcycle, can be just as gentle on your handknits as your own hands and will save a lot of time.

Tips before you start:

• If possible, remove the agitator from your machine; • Use cool water to reduce the risk of felting; • If you’re concerned that projects will snag, use a mesh garment bag to protect the fabric; and • Your first time through, sit with the machine and micromanage. Pause your machine often to look at what is happening inside.

Here, we walk you through two methods of washing a garment. For both methods, you will need:

Arrange your freshly washed garment on a blocking mat and gently smooth it into shape, using blocking wires to keep edges straight.

Leave the piece undisturbed until it is completely dry.

Set your machine to “Rinse and Spin” and select your load size. If you have the option, set your spin speed to low and set a soak time of 20–30 minutes.

Once your machine has filled with water, pause the cycle, open the lid, and pour in your wool wash (¼–1/3 cup, or as directed by the label). Swirl with your hand to mix. Add your garments and ensure they are saturated.

If you are able to set a soak time, continue your cycle. If not, keep the machine paused for 20–30 minutes. Beware that machines will automatically drain if you pause too long. So, get to know your machine.

If your wool wash needs to be rinsed out, drain your machine and rinse before you move on. If you used a no-rinse wash, simply allow your machine to continue to the spin cycle. Spinning is safe for knitwear, but you may also choose to remove them from the washer while wet and gently press out water with your hands without wringing.

Simply fill a container large enough for your garment with barely warm water and add your wool wash as directed by the label. Swirl to incorporate.

Add your knitwear, making sure each item is fully saturated with water.

Let soak for 20–30 minutes, then lift each item out and gently press out the water with your hands. As always, never wring the fabric! Twisting and wringing can cause wool fibers to felt.

CONTAINER METHOD If you don’t have a top-load washing machine with the appropriate settings or you want to wash your most delicate items separately, the container or sink method is the gentlest option.

DRYING YOUR FRESHLY WASHED GARMENTS Working with one garment at a time, layer the damp piece between two dry towels and roll into a tube. Press to remove excess water.

Again, do not wring!

Arrange your garments on a flat surface, blocking mats, or a drying rack. Choose blocking mats for pieces that require reshaping, such as those with lace. Allow to dry. If weather allows, you can dry your knitwear outdoors, but direct sunlight will fade dyes.

It’s crucial for garments to dry completely before storage, especially if you are planning to pack them into airtight containers.

Using the methods outlined above will allow you to care for your knitted garments without sacrificing efficiency! Your sweaters will thank you with decades of long life.
