Welcome to knit.wear Wool Studio Vol. III: The Michele Wang Collection! We decided to shake things up with this installment of Wool Studio: instead of collaborating with several different designers, we worked with just one. We are thrilled to present this special collection of knitwear designed exclusively by Michele Wang, a hand-knitwear designer whose MEGHAN BABIN MICHELE WANG name is synonymous with modern, alluring, and refined knits. Her design aesthetic perfectly complements Wool Studio’s, so when the opportunity arose for us to collaborate on a new collection, we jumped at the chance. For the past five years, Michele has spent most of her time designing for Brooklyn Tweed’s in-house design team, creating standout garments and accessories for their seasonal lookbooks. She also regularly contributes her designs to top yarn companies such as mYak, Manos del Uruguay, The Plucky Knitter, Woolfolk, and Quince & Co., to mention just a few. Her designs stand out against the crowd; there is a restrained, sharp, and thoughtful look to Michele Wang’s knitwear that is distinctive and eye-catching. For this winter issue of Wool Studio, Michele has paired her trademark blend of updated yet traditional cables, lace, and texture with contemporary and wearable silhouettes. She handpicked each yarn used in this collection and then created knitwear designs that beautifully showcase the unique qualities of each yarn. Our thanks to Kingfisher Yarn & Fibre, Kelbourne Woolens, mYak, Fairmount Fibers, Brown Sheep Company, Universal Yarn, Skacel, Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts, Tahki Yarns, and Sugar Bush Yarns for providing the beautiful fibers in this issue. Collaborating with Michele was a match made in knitters’ heaven because we are both drawn to the same fibers and colors, and we have a similar design aesthetic. Our initial “review” of her sketches for this collection consisted of me saying “Yes!” to everything without any questions and with few suggestions. She selected every yarn in the collection but left the color palette selection up to me, saying, “Well, you know what I like.” So naturally, I selected neutrals and deeply saturated “non-color” colors. She was pleased. One of my favorite days of this year was the day the box of samples arrived at the Interweave office. It was like Christmas morning—I tore open the box and laid each piece out on a table with an enormous grin pasted on my face. When I stood back and saw the whole collection together, the first phrase that popped into my head was “menswear for her.” I’ve always enjoyed balancing masculine and feminine elements in our photo styling for an unexpected and enthralling look, and the photo styling for this issue is—in my opinion—the perfect achievement of that beguiling aesthetic. From the entire Wool Studio team, and special guest Michele, we hope you are charmed and inspired by this collection, and that you enjoy creating your own versions of these knits as much as we enjoyed developing this collection together. THE FIBRE CO. ARRANMORE, DISTRIBUTED BY KELBOURNE WOOLENS The Fibre Co. Arranmore has everything a modern knitter could desire in a “rustic” yarn: it’s a complex tweed with a soft hand, it comes in an appealing Aran-weight gauge, and it has historic Donegal roots. Arranmore is suitable for accessories and shawls, but it really shines in pullovers and cardigans, especially projects with a few cables thrown in for good measure. Colors shown here: Brannagh, Glenveagh Castle, Cronan, Ruari, and Odhran. Additional colors and retailers found HERE. FIBER: 80% merino wool, 10% silk, 10% cashmere YARDAGE: 175 yd/160 m AMOUNT: 3½ oz/100 g WEIGHT: Aran GAUGE: 14–17 sts = 4" NEEDLES: US 8–10 [5 mm–6 mm] COLORWAYS: 20
“This tweed Aran-weight cardigan calls for addi’s classic, gold-standard needle set: the addi® Click Turbo Set. These needles guarantee a smooth knit.”
CHARLES PULLOVER The Charles Pullover is a quintessential classic sweater with a little twist—it features unconventional cables that run up the sleeves into a saddle shoulder. The Fibre Co.’s Arranmore brings complex and appealing visual interest to the stockinette fabric; although it appears to be a traditional Donegal tweed, the fiber blend is so soft that wearing this sweater next to the skin is a must.
