General information Neptune is a gas giant, the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in the solar system. The planet's name comes from the Roman God Neptune. Among the planets of the solar system it is the fourth in terms of diameter and the third in terms of weight. Neptune is 17 times the size of Earth. It was discovered on September 23, 1846.

The composition of the planet

At high altitude the atmosphere of Neptune is composed of 80% hydrogen and 19% helium. The atmosphere of the planet is divided into two main areas: troposphere, in which the temperature decreases with height, and stratosphere, in which the temperature increases with height.

Location in orbit

The average distance of Neptune from the Sun is 4.50 billion miles, one full cycle takes 164,8 years. On 12th July 2011 Neptune ended his first full circuit around the Sun since the discovery of the planet in 1846.
