Q: What inspired your passion for fins? After growing up spending a disproportionate amount of time worrying about seeing a shark whilst out surfing; I came face to face with a large Tiger Shark on one of my first dives. I love all animals but had never experienced a feeling like that before. It was overwhelming and humbling; I felt complete adoration, respect and love for this huge animal. Instead of being a terrifying encounter it was life-changing in the best way imaginable and now I spend most of my time trying to find sharks to dive with, introducing other ocean-user groups to sharks and of course joining other Shark Angels in the fight for their survival. Sharks need our help now more than ever before. Whether you like sharks or not, now is not the time to be complacent about protecting these important predators which play a vital role in maintaining a healthy marine eco-system.

www.sharkangels.com

Shark Angels are raising awareness on the plight facing sharks, giving the world a new perspective on these misunderstood animals, and often, in the trenches, stopping the slaughter of sharks, protecting them from our collective greed and ignorance. Instead of talk, we are all about action. We are making a difference.

SHARK ANGEL

When PR personality and local celeb Olivia (OJ) Symcox is not out surfing the waves of the South Coast (or scuba diving beneath them) she is gracing the airwaves of KZN! Known for her live daily Marine and Angling files and the popular aQuellĂŠ Beach Watch, which is aired daily during the holidays, OJ is always in touch with local surf and beach conditions. A water-baby by nature, OJ is passionate about the ocean. She grew up swimming and bodyboarding competitively and doing lifesaving on the Durban beachfront. Nowadays she has her hands full running her own PR Company, but she still uses every opportunity to get back into the surf. Some of her favourite hobbies include surfing and diving (scuba and free diving). OJ was born in Durban, where she attended Durban Girls' College. After completing a three-year IMM Marketing diploma, she worked as a Media Officer for the Association of Surfing Professionals in Africa (ASP), before starting her own business, Olivia Jones Communications. Having earned a glowing reputation in PR over the last 12 years, OJ has worked on a number of high profile events including the up-coming Volvo Golf Champions and the Mr Price Pro. She uses every opportunity to speak out her passion for conserving the environment and is currently actively involved with organisations such as the Shark Angels conservation group, the I am Water Trust and the Sustainable Seas Trust. SHARES HER THOUGHTS...

The bird life in our garden is such a treat! Our morning starts off with us being serenaded by our little Natal Robin. A pair of Loeries hang out in one of our trees, a Kingfisher visits us on our deck and we get regular visits from Yellow-billed kites, egrets, hadedas and other smaller, chatty birds. We have even had a blue duiker in our garden! We love gardening and have our own veggie and herb gardens, which we are very proud of! ON CAREER AND GOALS... ...I feel incredibly blessed to have a roof over my head, work to pay the bills, a loving family, the best husband on earth and a lifestyle that fulfils me. I hope to grow my business in order to be able to provide even more opportunities for others but most importantly I want to remain true to my core values. ON DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE... ...I would love to just keep on enjoying the amazing outdoor lifestyle that the South Coast has to offer and hopefully we will be blessed with children one day.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU? being out in nature and getting to appreciate God's perfect work.

PHOTOGRAPH: NMH PHOTOGRAPHY

WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING PROJECT YOU HAVE EVER WORKED ON? The National Geographic documentary, called Shark Attack Experiment, which was filmed last year. I learnt so much! We spent 6 weeks traveling to South Africa's top shark diving destinations, to conduct a variety of in-water experiments with different shark species (great whites, Zambezi's, Raggies, Black Tips etc.) alongside shark experts. Being able to dive every single day with my favourite animals was such a treat, something I would gladly do every day for the rest of my life. The purpose of the documentary was to answer questions about shark behaviour - what attracts them and what doesn't, in order to help beach-goers make sensible decisions about safe ocean use and also to put the risk of a shark incident into perspective. WHAT WAS YOUR TOP CAREER CHOICE IN HIGH SCHOOL? My dream job has changed so many times over the years! When I was younger, I wanted to be a traveling farm vet (James Herriot-style) but then changed my mind at a later stage and decided I wanted to be a Psychologist. Thank goodness my indecision proved to be an asset and I changed my mind in the eleventh hour and studied Marketing, which stood me in good stead to run my own business and work in the media. Working in PR is so versatile. I get to work on so many different projects and events, so I never get bored. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE HANGOUTS ON THE SOUTH COAST? There are so many amazing places to visit, but my current favourite is Crocworld near Scottburgh. There is so much to see - crocs of course, but also snakes, birdlife, breath-taking sea views and great food. I also like going along to get ideas and inspiration from Elsa Pooley's famous indigenous gardens and cycads.

Olivia & her hubby Russel Symcox My earliest childhood memories are actually of the south coast, we used to visit my Nana in Park Rynie every second weekend, so the South Coast has always felt like home.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING ON THE SOUTH COAST? The unspoiled beauty, the way I can enjoy diving with the Big Five, surfing un-crowded world class waves, get to explore coastal forests and sugar cane paths, or go for a stand-up paddle in the local dams and rivers. We really do have it all here! FOLLOW OLIVIA: www.facebook.com/Olivia.Jones.Communications / Twitter: @OliviaSymcox

ON LIFESTYLE AND FAMILY... ...I am such a home-body. If my husband Russel and I are not off on some adventure surfing, diving or exploring the outdoors, then I love nothing more than being at home with him and our two dogs, Avo (Canis Africanis) and Shadow (Great Dane). Both of our boys are rescue animals and I try to encourage people to look at adopting pets. There are so many animals, including pure breeds, that are in desperate need of a good home.

SLADE PRESTWICH CANDICE NEETHLING AIRBORNE AND STYLIN WITH QUIKSILVER S SLADE PRESTWICH BACKGROUND

Slade Prestwich s incredible talent was spotted by local surfing legend Ant Brodowics in 2006. A phone call to Quiksilver resulted in a sponsorship deal for Slade, who then entered the competitive surfing arena to score an outright victory in the Billabong U12 Junior Series. He has since been selected for several South African and KZN Junior teams, making some waves in acquiring sought-after titles such as South African Junior Champ and Quiksilver King of the Groms. WHAT HAS SLADE BEEN UP TO SINCE BEING ON THE COVER OF OUR SUMMER 2012 ISSUE? After competing in the in the ASP World Junior Championships in Bali, he went on to take 2 nd place at the Billabong Pro Junior event that took place in Cape St. Francis in September. Slade is currently training and plans to start the World Qualifying Series in 2013, where he aspires to complete in countries including the USA, Europe, Bali and Hawaii. To find out more about Slade follow him on Facebook or Twitter.

South Coast MTB marvel, Candice Neethling, is geared up for stardom. She grew up on a sugarcane farm in Oribi Gorge, where she and her dad started cycling for fun. It didn't take her long to start entering (and winning) races. One of the highlights of her career in the junior division was pedalling away with the title of 2010 Cross Country Champion (in her age group). Candice made the big jump from Junior to U23 in 2012 - the new age group category means more technical riding, more laps and stiffer competition. Only one month after turning 20, Candice set off to compete in the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. We caught up with her between races to do our cover-page shoot. 2012 was an eventful year, with hardly a moment to rest between events. Not only did Candice achieve fantastic results at a number of events she was selected to present South Africa at the Olympic Games that were held in London in 2012. Candice is sponsored by BMC SA

Acres of Chrome Behold bikes of every size, shape and colour imaginable, with acres of chrome, all polished to within an inch of their lives, brought there by riders from every part of Southern Africa and, despite the jokes usually levelled at riders of custom machines, most have been ridden to Margate. Be there to be seen and get to see, an ever-changing display of the wicked, the beautiful, the vulgar and the bizarre, no two alike, yet nearly all true to the same basic formula - a stretched out front end, chrome-plated engine, the biggest rear tyre possible and paintwork to a standard that motorcycle manufacturers simply cannot afford to emulate. Experience the overwhelming wave of movement, as hundreds of banners flap in the sea breeze and thousands of bikers and locals stroll, browse, eat, drink, wave, greet and chat along Beach Road; while dozens of bikes, their exhausts spitting and grumbling, weave their way through the throng.

Traditionally made from natural materials such as stones, wood, seashells and beadwork or ubuhlalu is a craft that is passed on from generation to generation, usually from older sisters to their younger sisters. Traditionally young Zulu girls Izintombi used their beads to send love letters to their loved ones. The recipient would then wear the beaded message proudly around his neck, for everyone to see.

WHY ALL THE FLUTTER ABOUT BUTTERFLIES? Butterflies are dependent on specific varieties of indigenous vegetation for feeding, pollinating and laying their eggs, making them incredibly sensitive to environmental change. The delicate natural balance is compromised when such host plants are removed, thereby threatening the existence of the butterfly population.

ENTER BUTTERFLY DOME-AIN... A butterfly dome is a type of greenhouse, in which the butterflies' natural habitat is simulated. The public can enter this magical world, where the butterflies flutter freely about.

CONSERVING OUR BIODIVERSITY Residents of local communities are educated about the propagation of butterflies, their lifecycle and role in the ecosystem.

GRACEANATOMY Behind every successful athleteÂ… is a dedicated medical team...

Local physiotherapist, Grace Hughes, was recently afforded the honour of being selected Chief Physiotherapist of the medical team supporting the South African Paralympic athletes at the 2012 London Games. This came after she had previously had the opportunity to accompany South African Teams to the All Africa Games (Algeria), Commonwealth Games (Melbourne and Delhi), World Games (Dusseldorf) and another Paralympic Games (Beijing). She is also the Physiotherapist to the National Men's Wheelchair Basketball team and is involved on their Medical Commission. These opportunities have taken her to many corners of the globe and given her invaluable experience and exposure. This elite, international exposure has given her an insight into physiotherapy protocols in other countries and she has been able to benefit our South African athletes through this. She has consequently, aside from her paralympic involvement, been involved with National golfers, athletes, swimmers, cyclists, hockey teams, rugby teams and mountain bikers. Grace completed her physiotherapy degree at the University of Cape Town and then went on to complete her Masters degree in Sports Medicine there too. She says she would probably have ended up in research had she not gone into clinical physiotherapy, so she keeps her academic interest by doing post graduate musculoskeletal, spinal and sports injury lecturing, as well as external examining at the Universities. "The progress made in physiotherapy research over the last decade has revolutionised the way our patients are assessed and treated; it's an exciting time for physiotherapy worldwide", she says.

Grace's success has been built on very hard work, many long hours and being fortunate to have chosen a career she loves. She is enthusiastic about physiotherapy practise being very rewarding; treatment is very effective due to the scientific rationale behind the mostly manual and exercise techniques employed.

Her practice in Ramsgate/Southbroom predominantly focuses on spinal, musculoskeletal and sports injuries, with an emphasis on rehabilitation. Grace also does a lot of medicolegal work and has a busy practice at the Margate Private Hospital. In the forest, away from the hustle and bustle of city life you will find "The Cellar" boutique restaurant at Honeywood in Sea Park. The name says it all, "The Cellar". Started in December 2009, in the cellar of the homestead, with its eclectic décor, serving gourmet and bistro food, The Cellar quickly developed a name for exceptional cuisine and great service. Over the past three years the restaurant has grown under its owners Dylan and Kate Smith having created over 12

menus and more than 60 separate set menus and ever popular wine pairing events. The Cellar, voted one of the "Best Bistros" on the East Coast in Eat Out, still serves gourmet and bistro food complimented with an affordable but comprehensive wine list. HOME DECOR & TUSCANY COFFEE BAR SUMMER 2013

Is a delightful home décor shop, situated upstairs from Execudec. They stock a wide range of locally-sourced and Indonesian handcrafted furniture and accessories, many made from recycled Indonesian teak, giving them a fashionable shabby-chic charm.

TUSCANY COFFEE BAR

Located in New Beginnings, the Tuscany Coffee Bar serves a variety of coffees and teas, cool drinks and some decadent sweet and savoury snacks. Shop at leisure for décor items for your home then settle down to enjoy a delicious cappuccino, while browsing through fabric samples and books on interior design and wallpapering.

ColourSchemes A MONOCHROMATIC colour scheme makes use of various intensities of a particular hue. A COMPLIMENTARY colour palette makes use of colours that appear opposite each other on the colour wheel. Perfect for public areas, such combinations are very striking and dramatic. ANALOGOUS colours occur next to each other on the colour wheel. For the best results, avoid combining cool and warm colours in an analogous colour scheme. TRIADIC colour combinations combine three hues that form a triangle on the colour wheel. When applying a triadic colour scheme, allow one colour to dominate. Use the other two colours to a lesser extent, to avoid the result from being unbalanced.

ARE YOU PLANNING TO REDECORATE? BEFORE SELECTING THE PERFECT COLOUR SCHEME CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: Size of the room Avoid painting small rooms in bright colours. This will make them appear smaller. How will the room be utilized? Lived-in spaces should feel light and airy. Lighting Cool colours work very well in rooms that get a lot of natural sunlight. What feelings would you like the room to exude? Warm colours are energising and work well in a creative space.

HOME LIVING EXECUDEC

Once you have finished shopping for that perfect piece to complete your "look", you can head downstairs to the Paint and Waterproofing shop, where experts are available to assists and advise you. Owner, Craig Charlton of Southbroom Painters and Decorators and Weatherseal, will gladly visit your home to perform an assessment and offer expert advice.

MARK LAWLOR I have always been an exercise and outdoor enthusiast and have trained in the gym since completing my national service in the Navy. My favourite sports are gym, mountain biking, kayaking, and waveski surfing. Before buying the gym with my friend and training partner in 1999, I worked at CocaCola in the laboratory, as a quality controller. What I love about my job: I enjoy seeing people come to the gym, and the positive changes it brings about in their lifestyles. The gym is not only a safe place to train - it has a great social aspect too. Great friendships have been formed here and people have plenty of fun while working out or doing a class.

means that you burn calories at a faster rate even hours after completing the exercise. Train with a training partner or friend. You are more likely to stick to any exercise programme if you have a commitment to someone, and while training in a friendly fun environment.

ZOOMING IN ON

GuySpiller

Guy Spiller, Prof Phillip Tobias & Jane Goodall

Guy Spiller filming The Ancient Astronomers of Timbuktu

Captured on Film? Ironically, this medium sets the imagination free Documentary filmmaker, Guy Spiller, has developed a reputation for his innovative use of the film language. An anthropologist by nature, Guy is fascinated by human biology, belief systems and the way in which humankind continues to honour its roots within the confines of an ever-evolving contemporary society. Guy grew up in Ramsgate and attended the Margate Primary School, where he won a scholarship to Michaelhouse. After school he studied medicine at UCT, but converted to a BSC (Med) in 4th year. He started experimenting with film as a hobby, during his time on the Cape Flats as a matric Science teacher. Before long he moved to Johannesburg and entered the film industry as an assistant to the film editor Charles Jameson. Before long he moved to Johannesburg as an assistant editor. Soon he was editing award winning adverts. He later directed TV commercials and then moved onto his first love, documentaries. Keen to engage with the South Coast where he grew up, Guy invested in his father's fish factory and renovated it into the Spiller's Wharf of today.

PAST PROJECTS INCLUDE: Tobias s Bodies a six part series, presented by Prof Phillip Tobias, in which he investigates South Africa s Palaeoanthropological heritage and how our evolution impacts on humanity today. So where do we come from? A closer look, with Prof Himla Soodyall, at South African ancestry, using mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome ancestry tests. The Boxer, Enthombe and Whiter than White these three award-winning documentaries, filmed in the late 80 s/early 90 s, all reflect the changes that were experienced in South Africa at the time. The Art of God - an examination of the San, and the history of their art. Prof David LewisWilliams shares his theory on the evolution of art. A Country Imagined, well-known musician and anthropologist Johnny Clegg offers his perspective on the diverse landscapes of South Africa and the stories that have inspired art.

SPILLERS WHARF: Situated on the banks of the mighty Mzimkhulu River, Spillers Wharf is an iconic local landmark and unique lifestyle centre which has managed to retain elements of both its industrial and harbour past. This delightful tourist attraction was originally a power station and later a fish factory. The Wharf has now morphed into an exciting local landmark that retains elements of both its industrial and harbour past. This modern, ambient venue houses a collection of individual businesses that sell unique quality products which showcase the best of the South Coast. Of interest is also the developing museum of interesting local photographs and stories which was recently upgraded. This superb venue merges seamlessly with the river vistas and warm African sun which adds zest to the vibrant atmosphere.
