First apply a suitable primer so that your make-up will adhere more evenly. This adds radiance and makes pores and fine lines less noticeable. Cover blemishes and dark under-eye circles with concealer and translucent powder. To achieve a flawless, velvety finish, use a compact foundation. For the lightest, most natural look - blend Elizabeth Arden's Sponge-On Cream Make-up (R230.00) with a foundation brush. If your T-zone tends to become oily, dust with a translucent powder. CHEEKS Use bronzer to contour your cheekbones and add a glow. Choose matt bronzing powder in taupe or natural shades such as medium - nothing too orange! Use a blusher brush to apply just under your cheekbones and sweep up towards your ears. A dab of highlighter on the highest point of your cheekbones will define and shine. EYES For soft-looking eyes use a smoky eyeliner and smooth brown cream eye shadow over your eyelids, down to your lash line. Clinique's lovely Desert Sun colour surge eye shadow works best (R210.00). Apply brown lengthening mascara to your upper lashes. For soft, yet defined brows, apply a matt powder shadow in a nude shade using a small flat soft brush. LIPS Slick on clear lip-gloss or tinted lip balm. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick, (R135.00) not only protects your lips with SPF 15, but also has a flattering honey-hued tint. BERTI'S SECRET For night time glam, add a dash of gold or bronze shimmer shadow to your eyelids, and re-apply the bronzer to your cheekbones. To best achieve your individual look, stop by the Foschini store to get expert advice on the best skin care and beauty products to suit your needs!

COLOURFUL SUMMER FUN

Wear two or three bold colours in the same outfit for a look that says "I'm confident", "I'm up-to-the-minute trendy", and most of all "I'm fun!" Don't forget to finish your look of with a pair of adorable heels or wedges.

DRESS REHEARSAL

This season's dresses are not only figure-flattering but cool and comfortable. Print dresses are getting a standing ovation and the classic, timeless full length skirt has returned for an encore. Review recipes for party food, and plan the party menu. Use familiar recipes to avoid culinary surprises. Plan decorations. Buy or make any needed centrepieces or decorations, candles or linens. Select music. Create playlists on a computer or media player for party use. One week before the party - clean house. Focus on public areas, the kitchen and bathrooms. Two days before the party, begin buying food. Decorate the house and set any tables ahead of time. Block out several hours on the day of the party to relax and prepare. Enjoy your event! Clean up after the party--and enjoy the "thank you!" phone calls from your guests. After the party, debrief. Note successes and shortfall - it'll guide your next event. 32

hand-written and from the heart Digital communication is second nature to most of us by now, our fingers (and reflexes) having adapted to handle the high-speed evolution of technology. Instant messaging makes it possible to chat to anyone, anywhere at any time. Messages are read, deleted, and quite often forgotten -in a flash! Yet few things are more intimate and special than a hand-written card or letter. Old-school, you say? To the contrary, old-fashioned, hand-made and sentimental touches are making a comeback. Why wait for a special occasion. Be spontaneous and give someone special in your life a gift that comes from the heart a hand-written card or note they can cherish for years to come.

A touch of nostalgia. Put some essential oil or your favourite perfume on a ball of cotton wool and store this with your stationery.

TANZANITE I S T H E WAY T O G O ! According to popular opinion, the tanzanite gemstone is maybe even more classical and sought after than a diamond.

What makes this stone so popular? Is it simply that fantastic colour and sparkle? No, it is the exclusivity of its origin. Tanzanite is particularly highly prized due to the fact that Tanzania is the only country in the world where it can be found and mined. It is the scarcity of the source and Tanzania's dangerous political, social and economic climate which increases the value of all tanzanite jewellery. The name was coined by Tiffany and Company who discovered the gem and became the main distributor of the rare stone worldwide.

34

www.shellycentre.co.za

When buying tanzanite, as with diamonds and other gemstones, the cardinal rule is to be on the lookout for the four Cs: colour, clarity, cut and carat. Tanzanite's amazing range of colours, combining the cool blue of sapphire and the rich purple of amethyst, have made this gemstone a fashion trend-setter. But always remember to be on the lookout for varying degrees of quality and clarity, and especially for sneaky imitations! Tanzanite should only be cleaned with warm soap and water. Tanzanite is coincidentally also the December birthstone which of course makes it the perfect Christmas gift for that special person in your life. Tanzanite also apparently helps to relieve stress and enhances composure, poise and harmony - perfection! Tanzanite - a stone which is rare, beautiful and highly sought afterÂ…. What more could you ask for?

DECEMBER TRANSCENDENTAL TANZANITE (Other December birthstones: Blue Zircon and Turquoise)

Found only in Northern Tanzania, in the vicinity of the Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzanite is coveted not only for its beauty, but also for its rarity. This unique and precious gemstone's colours range from violet to deep-blue with purple tones. Enchanting Crystal chat Blue is regarded as a spiritual and sacred colour by the Maasai tribe in Tanzania, which is in keeping with the belief by crystal healers that wearing Tanzanite brings insight, spiritual awareness and protection.

JANUARY GORGEOUS GARNET Although best known in their warm wine-red form, Garnets actually occur in a range of colours. They are found mainly in Africa, with smaller deposits occurring in countries such as India, Russia and Sri Lanka. The gem was named after its likeness to a pomegranate seed - "granatum", which means "seed" in Latin. Enchanting crystal chat Symbolic of eternal friendship and trust, garnets make perfect BFF gifts.

FEBRURY ALLURING AMETHYST The colour of this quartz can vary from pale to dark-blue violet, with shades of pink, red and even grey. Originally mined predominantly in Sri Lanka, Russia and Germany, the greatest sources are now Brazil and Uruguay. Enchanting crystal chat In ancient Roman and Greek civilizations Amethysts were believed to protect the wearer against the powers of Bacchus, the Greek god of wine ad intoxication.

MARCH AQUA-MAZING AQUAMARINE Aquamarine is the clear blue-green variety of the mineral, beryl, aptly named after the hues of the ocean water. It occurs in localities yielding regular beryl, mainly Brazil, but also in Mozambique, Zambia, Angola and the USA. Enchanting Crystal chat Legend has it that this gem once came from the deep-sea treasure chests of mermaids. Known as the "sailor's stone" it thought to protect mariners from drowning.

36

www.shellycentre.co.za

These divine gems are the hardest mineral on earth. Formed over a period of 1 to 3 billion years, deep within the mantle to of the earth, they are brought to the surface by volcanic activity. Pure, transparent diamonds are the most popular, but they actually occur in a range of colours, depending on the impurities present. Nearly half of all diamonds originate from Central and Southern Africa. Enchanting Crystal chat Diamonds are associated with eternal love, abundance, balance and clarity of thought.

APRIL DAZZLING DIAMONDS

MAY ENIGMATIC EMERALD You will instantly recognize the gorgeous grass-green variety of the mineral, beryl, although this gem does occur in other hues ranging from yellow-green to blue-green. Columbia is the main source, but deposits occur in many African countries, Russia, Australia and Madagascar. Enchanting Crystal chat Egyptian mummies were often adorned with emeralds to protect the souls of the dead in the afterlife. Emeralds are also associated with love, contentment and healing.

TIPS WHEN BUYING JEWELLERY AS A GIFT

CHOOSE YOUR JEWELLER WISELY! You should never buy anything expensive without knowing who you are dealing with! Overpriced, even fake gems are impossible for the novice to spot, so no matter how much you learn before you shop you are ultimately going to end up trusting someone.

GIVE PEARLS A WHIRL! Another classic and somewhat affordable option is pearls. These come in three kinds: natural, cultured, and imitation. The larger the pearl, the costlier it will be. Look for lustre a shiny surface that appears to have depth. Avoid ones that are dull or cloudy.

38

www.shellycentre.co.za

FIND A REAL GEM! Precious stones never go out of style, but make sure you choose the right one for you. Like pearls, there are three categories: natural, meaning dug out the ground; synthetic, meaning made in a laboratory, and imitation, meaning made in China! If you are not sure what kind of gems to get, one idea is to shop for the recipient s birthstone. If it is a particular colour you are interested in, you don t have to go with the usual suspects - diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. There is a huge selection of coloured gems to choose from

SIZE IS IMPORTANT! There is no substitute for having your finger measured professionally for that exciting new ring purchase, but it is not an exact science. Our fingers change in size from morning to evening, month to month and even winter to summer, due to temperature changes. A wider band can be worn more loosely. Large knuckles/hands should wear a slightly loose ring, while slimmer knuckles/smaller hands will require a tighter ring. Some rings can be re-sized, but many cannot. Rings made of titanium or tungsten steel, stone-set rings with complicated or precise mountings, and extremely thin or wide rings cannot be re-sized!

SILVER IS IN! We are always taught to go for the gold and not to settle for silver, but the latter is what s hot these days! Look for products marked sterling silver, which is 92.5 percent silver. Nickel silver, or German silver, has no real silver at all. But if gold is where your heart is at, consider a lower karat quality: 24k is pure gold, but there s also 18k (75 percent) gold, 14k (58 percent) and 10k (42 percent). 18k is often considered the best balance of colour and price. Whatever you buy, make sure it s clearly tagged with the karat weight and look for a tiny tag that reveals the manufacturer.

GET IT IN WRITING! Whatever you end up buying, make sure you get any guarantees in writing and any certificates, if applicable, that describe the jewellery you re buying. Look for a good return policy in case the gift isn t what the recipient is looking for!

EXTERIOR PAINTING TIPS The exterior of your home is what visitors and passers-by see first, and what your neighbours see just about every day. What the exterior of your home looks like will also have a huge impact on the asking price of your property should you ever wish to put it on the market. GOOD PREPARATION IS VITAL! It's impossible to emphasise this point enough. Proper preparation of all the surfaces to be painted is absolutely crucial and skipping a step here will lead to complications later on. Bear in mind that different sides and different areas of the exterior walls will probably require different processes. North-facing walls will probably tend to dry quicker after rain so fungicides may not be necessary in the paint. On south-facing walls, however, algae may be a problem in which case you will need to prepare the surface with this in mind. Kill off mildew with either a suitable product or use bleach and water - ensure that you wear protection! Also wear rubber gloves when using sugar soap to wash down surfaces. Given the fact that the exterior of your home is exposed to the weather 24/7 365 days of the year - it will collect dust and other wind-blown material which needs to be cleaned off. Apart from a general hosing down, investing in a pressure-cleaner could be a good idea; it will remove even the most stubborn dirt. Beware however, as even one with a pressure of 100kpa will produce a jet strong enough to eat away at plaster - imagine what it will do to bare skin! Use a wire brush to remove loose paint that resists even a pressure cleaner and then finish off with the pressure cleaner. Fill in cracks and holes with exterior filler. Since the spackled finish is often smoother than the surrounding surface, when the filler is still not quite dry, tap it lightly with the bristles of the wire brush to stipple the surface. If you have varnished wooden window frames and doors, sand them down and apply the finish of your choice. You may need to apply two coats, depending on the state of the wood and the amount of sanding that you do. Lightly sand the surfaces before applying the last coat, so that it adheres properly to the previous coat.

INDIGO inspiration

Picture the colour of a cloudless sky just before nightfall the mystical ocean depths that deep-sea divers descend into the marvellous blue brilliance of a sapphire.

Indigo has been chosen as the Dulux Colour of the year for 2013! This powerful colour is associated with healing energy, honesty, tranquillity and spirituality. We all recognise that today s hectic lifestyle can be overwhelming. Indigo represents interconnectedness - to one another, our planet, ourselves. Yet it reflects our inherent need to switch off from time to time. The global trends of slow food and functional handcrafted art go hand in hand with ColourFutures new palette, aptly titled Connections. Make a statement by painting a wall in this evocative colour. Calm and cooling, this is a great indoor colour to suit our subtropical climate. Too much indigo may appear a bit sombre, play around with your colour wheel and add complimentary colours such as orange. You can t go wrong with white, minimalist accessories to create a contrast. 42

PROGRESSIVE PATTERNS

Patterns are back in! Vintage florals have been revived, with white backgrounds being the hottest new feature. Popular new designs are inspired by: big blooms, stripes, checkerboard and other geometrical shapes, hand-sketches, animals, fruit and plants, tribal folklore and bold colour. HIP TIP: Allow patterns to clash a little, rather than trying to make everything match.

GLITZ FOR THE GLAM-AZON If you love all things sparkly and colourful, then you ve just got to add some bling to your jeans! Grab a hot glue gun, some rhinestones and get creative!

PATCHES FOR PERFECTION Goin for a vintage or boho look to fit your style? Then find some cute fabric, and cut it into patches for your jeans. Remember that you can be creative with your patches no one said you have to stick to squares. Cut out hearts, triangles, circles, or stars. Leave the edges open to promote the frayed look.

DARE TO TEAR If it is the edgy look that you are after, then get ripping! You can make the look as edgy or bold as you dare First, place a block of wood inside the pants leg and underneath the area where you want to place the rip. Then scrape a Stanley knife horizontally to loosen the fibres, and if that s not enough of a tear, you can cut the hole a little larger with some scissors. Remember that any fraying and tearing you do is going to get worse after each trip through the wash, so don t overdo it!

DOODLES FOR THE ARTIST Tell a story and turn your jeans into a masterpiece with some permanent markers and some innovative flair. The sky s the limit!

BRAVE THE BLEACH If you re jaunty and carefree, you ve got to let your jeans show it. And bleach is just the way to do that. First off, be ready to get down and dirty, so wear some old clothes that you won t mind destroying. Lay your jeans out on an old sheet or on some newspaper outside. Then mix up a solution of 1/3 bleach and 2/3 water in a squirt bottle, and use that to make patterns on your jeans. Leave the finished product out in the sun for a few hours until it dries.

MASS RIDE 2012

From 8am on Sunday, riders began meeting on the roof of the Shelly Centre for the biggest noise of all, a mass ride of several thousand motorcycles along a 34km route through Port Shepstone, Ramsgate and back to Margate.

Local traffic officers turned away four-wheeled vehicles and what looked like the entire population of the area turned out with camp chairs, beach umbrellas and cooler bags to watch the parade as wave after wave of gleaming motorcycles rumbled by, taking more than an hour to pass any given point. Dont miss the Mass Parade on Sunday, 28 April 2013. It truly is a sight and sound to behold. 62

PATRICIA CORNWELL THE BONE BED was R245, now R199 th This is the 20 book in the series and shows a side of Kay Scarpetta as you have never seen her before - a must-read for any fan of this series, or an ideal starting point for new readers. A woman has vanished while digging a dinosaur bone bed in the remote wilderness of Canada. Somehow, the only evidence has made its way to the inbox of Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta, over two thousand miles away in Boston. She has no idea why. But as events unfold with alarming speed, Scarpetta begins to suspect the palaeontologistÂ’s disappearance is connected to a series of crimes much closer to home: a gruesome murder, inexplicable tortures, and trace evidence from the last living creatures of the dinosaur age. When she turns to those around her, Scarpetta finds that the danger and suspicion have penetrated even her closest circles. Her niece Lucy speaks in riddles. Her lead investigator Pete Marino and FBI husband Benton Wesley have secrets of their own. Feeling alone and betrayed, Scarpetta is tempted by someone from her past as she tracks a killer both cunning and cruel.

J.R.R. TOLKIEN THE HOBBIT now only R129 The classic bestseller behind this year's biggest movie, this film tie-in edition features the complete story of Bilbo Baggins' adventures in Middle-earth, with a striking cover image from Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and drawings and maps by J.R.R. Tolkien. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobbit-hole in Bag End. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey 'there and back again'. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon...The prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies since its publication in 1937, establishing itself as one of the most beloved and influential books of the twentieth century.

YOU!

We all are looking for that magic elixir that will help us to age gracefully, but there really is no quick fix or magic potion We can however, reap tremendous benefits by making a few slight adjustments to our daily diet which can minimise the effects of aging BERRY-LICIOUS! Berries, especially blueberries and cranberries contain powerful antioxidants like vitamin C, known to boost the body s immune system. Blueberries are said to be the ultimate superfood, thought to be linked to fighting cancer and warding off Alzheimer s so liven up your breakfast by adding a few of these miracle fruits to your cereal or yoghurt. SPICE UP YOUR LIFE! A touch of spice is exactly what you need to minimise the nasty effects of ageing and to offset the impact of diabetes. The top 8 sassy spices are ground cloves, allspice, cinnamon, sage, marjoram, oreganum and thyme. ADVOCATE FOR AVOCADOS! Avocados possess the perfect balance of good monounsaturated fats to help lower blood cholesterol levels. They also contain significant amounts of vitamin E, which helps to boost the body s immune system and vitamin B6, which is vital for a healthy nervous system. POP THEM PEPPERS! Peppers are not only gorgeous to look at, but are nutritionally potent as well. Naturally sweet and crunchy, green peppers are packed with more vitamin C per 100g than oranges! OODLES OF OMEGA! Whilst all types of fish are good for our bodies, oily fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, pilchards and mackerel are also excellent sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. These help protect us from heart disease and circulation problems. MEDITERRANEAN MOMENTS! Studies show that people who follow a Mediterranean-style diet which is rich in fruits, vegetables, olive oil, legumes, whole grains and fish, seem to suffer less from brain and heart deterioration when compared with people who do not.

ADD A TOUCH OF

HEAT AND TURN UP THE

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is the dried, inner-bark of a tree native to India and Sri Lanka. Fragrant, spicy and sweet cinnamon sticks bring heart-warming flavour to Indian dishes such as Biryani, Pulao (a popular North Indian rice dish) and certain curries. Cinnamon is also used in powdered form, influencing dishes from around the world. Who can resist piping-hot pancakes with cinnamon-sugar?

TURMERIC Related to Ginger, Turmeric is the root of a plant indigenous to India. In its powdered form, this flavourful, bright yellow spice comprises the main ingredient in curry powder. Used mainly in Kashmiri dishes, this Indian saffron brings delightful colour and distinctive flavour to many North and South Indian dishes. Turmeric has been used for centuries as natural, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medication.

STAR ANISE Named after its shape, star anise is the dried fruit of a small oriental tree. Used predominantly in Chinese cuisine -it is one of the ingredients in the famous Chinese Five Spice mixture- Star Anise s liquorice flavour adds a touch of magical sweetness to red meat dishes, including curries. In Western cooking it is popularly used in stewed fruit and jams.

SUNSCREEN TIPS: ARE YOU SPF-SAVVY? SUN SAVVY: 5 SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT SPF We ve all heard the basic facts about sunscreen: apply 15-30 minutes before sun exposure, wear daily to prevent premature aging and reapply after swimming. But there are some grey areas EXPIRED SUNSCREEN CAN DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD! Using an expired sunscreen can lead to reduced protection from UV rays due to the weakened SPF levels. Plus, expired formulas can also contain bacteria and fungus growth! Sunscreens degrade in hot temperatures, so those left in the glove compartment, for example, might lose their effectiveness well before the expiration date. If there is no expiration date? Bin after one year. REAPPLY EVERY TWO HOURS NO EXCEPTIONS! One coat is not sufficient coverage protect your skin all day, whether you re swimming or not. Even the best sunscreens need to be reapplied every two hours. If you are going to be out in the sun for long periods - set a reminder on your phone to reapply. SUNSCREEN IS A MUST, EVEN WHEN YOU RE INDOORS! Notice more freckling or discoloration on the right side of your face? That s likely a result of UV rays penetrating through your driver s side window. UV rays aren t blocked by clouds or glass, which means you ll need plenty of SPF even if you spend your days at a desk near a window. CHEMICAL AND MINERAL SUNSCREENS ARE BOTH EFFECTIVE BUT WORK DIFFERENTLY! Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun s UV rays; mineral sunscreens block those rays. MAKEUP WITH SPF IS NOT ENOUGH TO PROTECT YOU! You should put on a good base of sunscreen every day regardless of whether your makeup contains SPF to be truly safeguarded from the dangers of the sun s carcinogens.

AS SOON AS YOU FEEL AS THOUGH YOU'VE BEEN TOASTED - TAKE THIS FOUR PRONGED APPROACH:

Pop two aspirin tablets, which inhibit the prostaglandin release that can increase the redness Take a cool bath or shower. Sunburn increases blood flow to your skin; cold water reduces it. Slather the affected areas with an aloe-based gel. But avoid aloe products which contain alcohol: they can dry skin and increase peeling. Do not repeat the same mistake. Solemnly swear to generously apply sunscreen (and reapply, every two hours) when you are next in the sun!

IS IT A

A last minute invitation to hang out with a co-ed group of friends is fine, but last minute sweetheart dates are unacceptable! Someone who cares for you will not take your time for granted or treat you like an afterthought. Honking the hooter from the driveway is cowardly and rude! A gentleman would come to your door, meet your parents and walk you to the car, where they should then open your door.

DATE?

Establish the ground rules of the date. Who is driving? What time are you expected back? Where will you be going? What is the dress code? If your date suggests splitting the bill at the end of the meal - then your date isn t a date. It s friends hanging out! Make sure your parents know where you are going, and preferably take a cell phone with you. This is about safety, your parents care about your well-being and safety, so make it easy for them. Do not sit on your phone the whole time! Be attentive and engaging There will be lots of time to text your friends when you get home! Try to prepare ahead of time a few light hearted topics for conversations for those possible lulls in conversation! Keep it light and amusing. Set respectful boundaries from the outset That means no hanging out in parking lots after movies! Follow your instincts and use common sense.
