The Port Shepstone Lighthouse stands like a melancholy sailor, keeping his sleepless watch on the horizon, dutifully signalling to each passing ship that there is “land ahoy”. In the 1890’s this cast iron structure was shipped from Britain, possibly venturing around the dreaded Cape of Storms and up the coast into the warmer waters of KwaZulu-Natal. Originally erected at Scottburgh to mark the southern point of the Aliwal Shoal reef, this 8 metre high, chequered lighthouse now stands at the mouth of the Umzimkhulu River. This has been its vantage point for over 100 years, since being relocated here in 1906, in the days when Port Shepstone was still a working harbour. Now a national monument, the Port Shepstone Lighthouse still casts its watchful eye out to sea. The now-electric light flashes every 6 seconds, reaching up to 26 nautical miles into the Indian ocean.
