CRAIG HINDS

AN EXTRAORDINARY TALENT. South Coast Style cover page personality, Craig Hinds from Watershed fame spent most of his childhood holidays on the South Coast. He loves to reminisce about his happy memories here…“My Gran lived there for many years and then my dad moved to the South Coast. My best thing was to buy a pie with my pocket money from Lilly’s Bread Basket, I think it was called…and I always wanted to be a lifeguard. I’m a good swimmer you know!” If you loved the song Indigo Girl you will definitely love the album Ordinary Boy.

CRAIG HINDS

His wasn’t destined to be an ordinary story. Now comes the next chapter in the evolution of an extraordinary musician.Craig Hinds knows, perhaps better than anyone else in the country, how to craft a song that gets under the skin, seeps into your soul, and stays with you. A biography by, Keith Bain

THE NEXT CHAPTER

Making unforgettable pop songs is something he’s been doing for 15 years. As songwriter and lead vocalist he’s turned out archetypal performances, making Watershed not only a legendary band, but the number one acoustic rock outfit in the country. He’s penned some of the most memorable pop songs and radio hits of the last decade and a half. And he’s done that without the skinny jeans, crazy make-up, or crackerjack marketing. For Craig Hinds and Watershed, the journey has been about creating solid music; craftsmanship has been their key, and their measure of success has always been in the songs rather than the band’s image. A self-taught guitarist who grew up in a musical family, Craig knew from a young age that could sing and he knew he wanted to make music. He was never a poet, though. Nor was he in the school choir. He simply knew that he wanted to create music that would have wide appeal and speak to a big audience. He was raised on a diet of big, wellmade songs with great, powerful melodies. His parents instilled in him an appreciation of finely-crafted music, and he was always into epic, lyric-driven bands. Serendipitous, then, that he would end up leading an epic band of his own, making the kinds of songs that become anthems, blazing up the charts, and entering the collective imagination. Songs that you can sink your teeth into. When Watershed’s first album went platinum in 2000, it was a pretty tight turnaround from

Craig’s early acoustic pub gigs in 1995. He only began writing music and putting lyrics on paper in his mid-twenties; at the time he was supplementing his teacher’s salary gigging in bars and pubs. Quickly he figured that he was earning more moonlighting than from his day job-and he was doing what he loved. He also discovered that people loved hearing him perform, and that he was penning songs that made audiences sit up and pay attention. “I’ve loved my career so far,” he says. “And I love that Watershed has always been about the music. We’re not about media image; we haven’t bothered with clever costumes; we’re not into gimmicks, really.” Four great albums and more than a decade as the country’s number one pop-rock outfit has brought tremendous fulfilment, and Craig says Watershed will continue to record and tour. “I’m in this business because it excites me,” he says, thrilled to have added another dimension to his career. A solo project is a natural progression for a singer-songwriter, and Craig felt ready for “a bit of ‘me’ time.” The other members of Watershed each have their side projects and alternative outlets, and whilst Craig has written songs for other artists, he’s been keen to do something more deeply personal. Fifteen years as Watershed’s front man has certainly given Craig the confidence for a solo career-and he felt vocally ready for the challenge of such an all-consuming project.

the singer, Craig Hinds the writer. This is something new for me.” It’s been a long wait, but the singer-songwriter has emerged from his latest studio session with a new album under his arm. His first solo project, it’s a powerhouse recording that makes a paradigm-shifting declaration: “Craig Hinds is the real deal and he’s here to stay.” The album, which will be released in May 2013, follows months recording in Hollywood in collaboration with international producers in what Craig calls a “creative adventure.” The album will be the most exciting pop album to come out of South Africa this year. Strong testament to Craig’s acknowledged position as the country’s foremost writer of pop songs, the album satisfies on all levels: strong melodies; gripping rhythms; penetrating lyrics. Eleven songs executed with an elegance, poise, and depth of emotion that will tear deep into your soul. Here is that rare thing: An album that captivates from beginning to end. As a prelude to the release in May, Craig has released ‘The Light’ the first single off his debut solo album. ‘The Light’ comes at a pertinent time when the issues of women are centre stage. Craig prides himself with having been surrounded by strong, creative women all his life but he knows how hard it is for women to acknowledge their greatness. This single is for them.

“Right now, I’m excited about Craig Hinds www.southcoaststyle.co.za >

CRAIG HINDS FROM WATERSHED FAME

Q&A

Tell us more about Craig Hinds from Watershed fame… how would you describe yourself as lead singer in the band, compared to the writer and solo artist of today? A I suppose it’s the same really. I’m the same guy… either Craig from Watershed or just plain Craig. Being the frontman of a big band like Watershed definitely has its perks (if you know what I mean). Building a new brand like Craig Hinds isn’t easy, but it’s fun and it keeps me young! Q Describe the genre of your new CD Ordinary Boy. A It would be classified as a rock album. I’ve experimented with a few more synth sounds as well as big guitars. I always end up moving into the big production arena. Q What made you decide to launch your career as a solo artist? A It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do. Almost just like my own personal stamp. It was great fun recording it in Hollywood and I met some great people. I suppose I was free to do what I wanted! Q What is your favourite song on the album, and why? A I love the song ‘Leave tomorrow behind’ I really love the feel, the mood and the vocals. Not sure what else to say about it. I just love it! Q At this stage in your career, would you describe yourself as a singer, who loves writing songs or a songwriter who loves to sing? A

I think I’m more a songwriter who loves to sing (wink).

Q You have just been on tour promoting your CD. Tell us more. A Yea we did a quick whip-around national tour, which was really great and very well received. I think people are interested to hear what I’m doing. Obviously people keep shouting out INDIGO GIRL and then I’ll sneak it in near the end of the show. Nowadays bands need to do way more touring than ever before.

Q What’s the first song you ever remember hearing? A Songs were never really a part of my life. I grew up dreaming. I suppose I heard a lot of songs while growing up, but never really listened to any of them. Songs were just part of my surroundings. Possibly a song of my dad’s called ‘love it’. Watershed covered this song back in 2004. Q Name some of your greatest musical influences. A Has to be Adam Duritz from the Counting Crows, Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20, Sting, Travis and Brandon Flowers from The Killers and Keane. Q What are you listening to lately? A I’m a bit confused at the moment. I’m not quite sure what’s good anymore. Locally I’m listening to my brothers’ album (The Hinds Bros. Ocean of Milk), Blackbyrd and Daniel Baron. Q Take us for a brief tour down memory lane, to your musical roots. Tell us about your mentors and role models and how you subsequently became involved in industry. A Pretty much everyone in my family on both sides can play music. Both my grandparents played the piano. My mom’s brothers all played music, my mom is an artist and a teacher. My dad has been a professional musician his whole life. My brothers are either musicians or artists and my sister is a dancer. I sort of had no option really but to become a singer/ songwriter. Q Tell us more about your family. A Right now it’s just me and my beautiful wife, Natalie. We don’t have any children yet, but it’s definitely on the agenda. Q Describe a typical day in your life. A I wake up really early, around 5:30am. Have tea in bed, stare out the window. Make a second cup, keep staring… possibly a third cup. Go for an 8km run. Shower. Pick up some mails at home. Usually the odd interview and a few meetings, then an afternoon sound check if we have a show and then perform at night. On non-performing nights we watch TV. Some great stuff on at the moment! Q Where to, from here? A Going to really keep pushing my solo record through 2014 as well as release a new Watershed album. Watershed are in discussions about that at the moment and the writing process is about to begin… very exciting!

THE HINDS BROTHERS

THE HINDS BROS. RELEASE THEIR INSPIRATIONAL DEBUT ALBUM… Brothers Aden and Wren Hinds, although they currently reside in Durban, are home-grown South Coasters! Raised in an environment alive with creative energy, the Hinds brothers took to music and song-writing like fish to water. Role models include their mother (artist Diane Erasmus), their father (professional musician, Kevin Hinds) and their uncle (artist, poet and photographer, Keith Erasmus), who are all South Coast locals and talented artists in their own right. Their brother, Craig Hinds from the band Watershed is featured on page 8-11.

Although their genre has been described as acoustic rock country indie, Aden regardsOcean of Milk as “a collection of songs (each with its own mood and feeling) that seem to live together rather well”. Wren describes the production as organic, lush and textured… featuring a lot of harmonies and warm, woody instruments. Their musical influences, many…their style, unique.

When music is penned from the inkwell of the soul it not only has the capacity to touch you on a deeper level, it has the ability to reach into the nooks and crannies of your The Hinds Bros. debut album Ocean of Milk being and bring about a shift in perception. was released by South Sea Records on the The Hind Bros. share more than a biological 27th August 2013. Q&A

SOUTH COAST ICON | SUMMER 2014

Q How and when did you decide to form a band rather than pursue separate music careers? A Aden: It always seemed natural that we would start a band together. From childhood we’ve been creating together, be it making a little comedy and music tape recording or inventing some new game. I started playing the guitar at 17 and Wren started quite soon after that. Q What is your favourite song on the album, and why? A Aden: This is an impossible question… it would be like choosing between your children. All the songs are very close to our hearts, so we’ll mention who that show the opposite ends of the album. Blue Sky Meets Ganga was written in India, and inspired by the Beatles and the time I spent living in Rishikesh. It just turned out to be like a mini masterpiece, with the sitaar, dobro, tabla, flute, violins, string bass, drums and many voices. There are so many layers, it is just incredible… Wren: …and The Drifter shows the other side of the Hinds Bros. – a beautifully sparse, stripped bare acoustic tale about someone lost in a metaphoric ocean. Q Name 5 words that best describe your personality? A Aden: High, low, humorous, changeable, imaginative Wren: creative, compassionate, humorous, shy wanderlust Q What do you love about the South Coast? A Wren: The ocean, geography, vegetation and our family… Aden: …great weather too! Q Where to, from here? A Wren: We do not know what the future holds, but at the moment we are very busy touring Ocean of Milk and spreading the music. We also started an independent label, South Sea Records in Durban this year. Aden: I hope we’ll always be able to make a living by doing what we love, and connecting with people around the world. We try not to make things too complicated and take it one step at a time. Read the full interview on www.southcoaststyle.co.za

Conservation, Partnerships & Ecotourism

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife nature reserves Umtamvuna, Mpenjati and Oribi Gorge all fall within the biodiverse Pondoland Centre of Plant Endemist on the South Coast

Wild places, precipitous ravines, hidden valleys, crystal streams with secluded waterfalls, towering cliffs, pounding seas, and everywhere an amazing array of plants both rare and common, these are the ingredients of the Pondoland Centre of Plant Endemism (PCE) which stretches from Hibberdene south to Port St Johns along the coast. A place of wonder, delight and excitement. The great river gorges lie gashed through the land with endless patterns of rock castles standing proud above their depths which hold shady forests sheltering some of the rarest woody species in the country.” TONY ABBOTT

THE PONDOLAND CENTRE OF PLANT ENDEMISM It all dates back to when volcanic and tectonic activity led to the breakup of Pangaea. In time Africa and Antarctica moved apart, formation the Indian Ocean. The basalt capping of the Drakensberg is evidence of the huge volcanic flow. The eastern edge of Africa, no longer supported, dipped towards the new ocean causing a change in the river drainage. These young rivers have worn through the basalt to expose the sandstone below. It is this sandstone that provides a home for our special plants. The Msikaba Formation, named after the river on the southern boundary of the Mkambati reserve, gives the northern wild coast its distinctive feature of rolling hills, cleft by precipitous gorges. The Pondoland Centre, is one of 3 centres forming the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Hotspot(MPA). The MPA hotspot is the area along the east coast that falls below 1800m. There are a mere 34 such hotspots in the entire world. A Hotspot is one of the Earth’s biologically richest and most endangered eco-regions. The PCE is well known around the world amongst plant lovers but little known by its inhabitants. At 180 000 ha it is one of the smallest plant centres, therefore VERNON CROOKES MEMBER NUMBER - 112 TOUR 1 - PAGE 12 CALL - 039 974 2222

immensely vulnerable to disturbance. Many of the endemic plants have tiny distributions within the Pondoland Centre and this merely exacerbates the vulnerability of species growing there. PCE is considered the second most floristically diverse region of SA. It is the soil and its parent sandstone that defines the area of the PCE. Here we find an exciting suite of plants, some restricted to this Msikaba formation, others that spread to the neighbouring Natal Group sandstone, the latter appearing fine grained and forming resistant sandstone cliffs such as those seen in Oribi Gorge, giving a distinctive table-top topography.

One plant family and 6 genera are found only in Pondoland. Umtamvuna, Mkambati, Mpenjati and Oribi Gorge are proclaimed nature reserves that fall within the PCE. Other protected areas under stewardship include the Red Desert nature reserve, Frederika Preserve and conservation areas including Trafalgar wetland, the Bushbuck Trail in Southbroom and Admiralty Reserve. RIVERBEND ART GALLERY

NEW

Riverbend Art Gallery has for a number of years been the home to the works of some of South Africa’s finest artists. This wonderful gallery which has hosted a number of exhibitions is a treat for art aficionados as it houses an exquisite collection of unique pieces, comprising varied media and art styles.

CROCODILE CAFÉ

The Crocodile Café is a fully licensed restaurant situated on the farm and is famed for its hearty farm-style breakfasts, light family lunches, waffles and lazy afternoon teas. Apart from the yummiest milkshakes, freshest scones and scrumptious lemon meringue pie the Crocodile Café also offers various crocodile dishes. Tables set outside allow visitors to enjoy their meal whilst watching the kids play on the jungle gym. The Crocodile Café caters for kid’s parties, cocktail parties and private dinner functions.

FAMILY | SUMMER 2014

Each year, during December thousands of crocodiles start hatching at Riverbend Crocodile Farm. Over the last 22 years, owner and renowned crocodile specialist Howard Kelly, has presented the visitors to Riverbend with a fascinating presentation which covers topics ranging from crocodile ecology to the impact of crocodiles on human populations in Africa. Having worked with crocodiles for more than 25 years, Howard has imparted some fascinating knowledge to thousands of curious visitors, and his crocodile hatching demonstrations in January and February have become legendary on the South Coast. People flock back every year just to experience this wonderful natural phenomenon. Besides witnessing the crocodile hatching, the crocodile feeding is particularly spectacular in summer when the crocodiles go into a feeding frenzy every Wednesday and Sunday at 15h00.

MORE THAN CROCODILES… While famous for the legendary crocodile feeding every Sunday at 3.00pm, Riverbend is so much more than a Crocodile Farm... Besides being a home to hundreds of magnificent crocodiles Riverbend also offers visitors an insight into snakes. 19 of South Africa’s most beautiful and deadly snakes are exhibited in the farm “Snake House” and an educational snake show is presented at 14h30 every Sunday (and Wednesdays in holiday seasons). An Educational Centre provides visitors with information relating to crocodile biology, marine ecosystems and birdlife and an audio visual presentation is offered in English, Zulu and German.

GET TO KNOW

RiverGUIDE

Luke Williamson....

Luke is a water baby and adventurer to the extreme! Having grown up on a farm/holiday resort on the banks of the Vaal River, he grew to love all aspects of the outdoors. He spent school holidays fishing, canoeing, tubing and exploring the river. At the age of 12 he went on his first river rafting trip and from that moment he was hooked! Three years later he enrolled in a River Guide course, presented by the national rafting body at the time - SARA (South African Rivers Association). In February 2000, at the age of 15, he qualified as a Level 1 River Guide. His school breaks were now spent working on the Vaal River as a freelance guide. At the end of 2001 his parents decided to relocate to the South Coast. This is when he experienced his first trip down the Umzimkhulu River! First working as a freelance guide for Oribi Extreme (now Wild 5 Adventures) he soon joined the team as a fulltime adventure guide, once he matriculated in 2002. He left for a few years to further his studies, qualifying and gaining experience as a Game Ranger in the Pilanesberg.

Shortly after his return to Wild 5 Adventures is 2011 he was promoted to Manager of the Adventure Company, which is owned by Paul Jefferys. Luke and his dedicated and experienced team of guides can’t wait to take you for a white water rafting expedition down the Umzimkhulu River! Luke’s qualifications include: Level 3 First Aid, Trip leader APA (African Paddling Association), Level 2 Adventure Course (OAA), which covers Abseiling, Rock Climbing, Sea Kayaking and more, Level 2 Field Guide FGASA (Field Guides Association of SA).
